Early life
To understand Hebrin Relar, you must first understand where this young, Bajoran man comes from.  His adoptive  father and mother were both born during the Occupation of Bajor, trying times for both of them.  These are dark times, that both of them rarely speak of, though Relar has gathered as much as he can, so that he might understand.

His father, Hebrin Tayel, was a half-Cardassian born to a Bajoran woman.  He hailed from the province of Hedrikspool.  Hebrin Dura, a woman he would later reconnect with, was forced to give the boy to a Bajoran orphanage.  Relar's grandmother tells him she did not choose this lightly--just that she could not raise a boy in the conditions where she was growing up.  That he would be safer in the orphanage, than he would be with her.  She's never given specifics as to who Relar's grandfather was, other than that he was a Cardassian with 'faults.'  And that she has not seen him sense Hebrin Tayel's conception.  She had left the boy with a name.  Eventually when he came of age he was signed off to be sent to a labor camp.  He was still a youth when a Resistance cell liberated that labor camp; it was at that time that Tayel killed for the first time, firing a phaser he had picked up at an aggressing Cardassian.

After the liberation of Bajor, he was still very aggressive, still used to fighting Cardassians.  It is said that Lonam, however, who helped to temper this man's fury.  She was a Resistance fighter, just a child though when she'd first met him.  When they were young adults, however, their relationship became more serious.  Eventually they would marry, but Tayel did not want to pass on his genetics to his children.  Instead, he opted to adopt war orphans...and that is how they found and adopted Relar, at the orphanage.  It was believed that Relar's parents had died fighting in the Dominion War.  He was light of his parents' life.  They absolutely adored their son.

His family was quite religious.  They deeply and whole-heartedly believed in the Prophets, and he could always remember attending the Temple with them.  His schooling was typical of a Bajoran youth's.  When he was eight, his sister was born.  He remembers holding little Serra in his arms, one day, looking upon his younger sister.  They would, as she grew, have their sibling quarrels, but they still got along quite well, and were inseparable.  He would tell her, when she was about five, about the things he had learned in school.  The two liked to run around the house, and laugh and play.  Their parents usually allowed it, unless it was past bedtime or they had something to do.

Relar was fascinated with the world outside of Bajor.  He'd always been so inspired by the stories of explorers, and the things he'd heard about the world outside.  Not to mention the alien species he encountered, and occasional trips to the station.  He was certain at a young age, that he wanted to join Starfleet.  He wasn't sure what track he would take, and his father wanted him to be certain this was the path he wanted to choose.  His application was, nevertheless, accepted, and soon he found himself as an Academy cadet.

He knew that he was adopted, but it scared him, the notion of looking up his biological parents, knowing that they were dead.  But part of him still wanted to do so.  He would let his faith help him to determine this.
