Lauren Devereaux

Character Details

Character Name: Lauren Devereaux
Character Age: 23
Character DOB: January 30, 2379
Character Image:Link to Image
Character Species: Human
Gender: Female
Character Family: Robert Devereaux (Father), Sofia Devereaux (Mother), Olivia Devereaux (Younger Sister)
Character Bio:
Lauren was born in London in 2379, the oldest child in what would eventually become a family of four upon the birth of her sister 3 years later. Her father Robert is a mathematics professor at Amazon University. Sofia, her mother, is a communication equipment technician who works primarily on non-Starfleet operated systems across Earth.

Almost from the time she could crawl, it was apparent to her parents that Lauren was insatiably curious and had an innate love of exploration. Her family quickly learned that they needed to take extra care in baby-proofing their apartment, because if there was any possible way for her to reach somewhere or something she shouldn't, Lauren would find a way. They eventually found an outlet for her rambunctious energy: hiking. Lauren loved being outdoors, and her parents happily obliged this desire as often as they could. Whether it was camping in the Scottish highlands or hiking in the Australian outback, frequent outdoor adventures quickly became a staple passtime for the family. Lauren was constantly finding new locations to explore on the Net and would constantly bring them up to her parents until they scheduled a trip. Of course, this restlessness wasn't always a positive thing; she also manifested quite the impatient streak, something she still struggles to keep in check on occasion.

As she got older and progressed in her schooling, Lauren began to excel in the areas of maths and science. She also developed a close relationship with her sister, despite the fact that the two were the opposite of each other in many ways. Where Lauren wanted to be outside as much as possible hiking, camping, or climbing, Olivia much preferred to remain indoors. Lauren preferred the logical subjects, but Olivia was fascinated by the arts, particularly music. They butted heads as much as any siblings, but when it came down to it they were nigh on inseparable.

Eventually, Lauren's desire to see as many new sights as possible outgrew the small trips she went on with her family. While they had been to many places on Earth and a few larger trips to Mars and other parts of the Solar System, she began to set her sights on the larger universe. There was an obvious career choice available to fulfill that desire: Starfleet. Her parents, who had suspected that may be her future for many years, were understandably a bit nervous to see their daughter choose a career that would undoubtedly put her in harm's way. However, they remained supportive and proud to see her go to the Academy, one step closer to the stars she longed to see.

"Computer, initiate program Devereaux Six. Resume last saved state." As the landscape materialized around her, Lauren immediately felt the dry heat and increased gravity of Vulcan and gasped. As many times as she ran this program, she never quite got used to the feeling of being so abruptly immersed in the harsh environment. That, however, was exactly what made it so good for some endurance training. She stood on the simulated clifftop and gazed for a moment at the desert that appeared to be hundreds of meters below her. She had never actually been to Vulcan herself, but if the program was anything to go by, the stark vistas must be breathtaking.

After pausing to take in the view, she hoisted her pack and buckled the straps across her chest and waist, cinching them so they were snug but not tight. She'd been running this program for a few weeks now, simulating an arid mountain trail in the mid-latitudes of the planet. Whenever she could, she would get down to a holodeck and load up the program, hiking the trail in 1-2 hour chunks. More than just a source of exercise, it served as an opportunity to get in some on-foot "exploration", something she couldn't do quite as often these days. Being a Starfleet cadet was extremely demanding work; there was always a plasma injector that needed calibrating, or a diagnostic to run on some system. As hard as the work was, though, she still got a small thrill every time they warped into a new system she had never been to before. There was nowhere else she'd rather be than on a Federation starship.

She had just set off down the trail when she heard the telltale tone of the intra-ship comms system, followed by the words "Engineering to Cadet Devereaux."

Blowing a few strands of hair out of her face, Lauren tapped the combadge attached to her usual hiking t-shirt. "Devereaux here."

"I know you're off-duty, but we had to do some rearranging to the duty schedule. Ensign Ch'karhith is still recovering from that bug he picked up on the last away mission. Doctor says his skin is back to being blue again, which is good, but she still wants him on bed rest. We'll need you to cover his shift this time around. Sorry, Cadet."

"No problem. I'll be down there in 10. Devereaux out." Lauren replied, doing her best to keep the note of disappointment out of her voice. This was the first time she had managed to book a holodeck all week, but looked like she'd have to give up her slot. The disappointment quickly gave way to determination, though. At this early point in her career, every shift was a chance to prove her worth as a new part of the crew. She took one last moment to look around her at the beautiful Vulcan vista, then removed her pack. "Duty calls. Computer, end program."
