Katelyn adjusted the strap of her security vest as she stepped onto the observation deck, the hum of the station's environmental systems filling the quiet space. The vast expanse of space stretched beyond the reinforced windows, stars blinking in the distance like whispers of the past. Even after leaving Starfleet, she still found herself drawn to the endless horizon, the same curiosity that had once driven her pushing at the edges of her mind.

A soft beep from her wrist communicator broke her thoughts. "Ashford, report to the lower docking ring. We've got a situation near Bay 4."

She tapped the device. "On my way."

With practiced efficiency, she navigated the corridors of the civilian security sector. Unlike the strict protocols of Starfleet, this job came with fewer rules—but just as many risks. As she approached the docking bay, the sound of raised voices echoed down the corridor. A Ferengi merchant was waving his arms wildly, while a freighter captain—a gruff Andorian—stood rigid with barely contained frustration.

"Alright," Katelyn interjected, stepping between them, "What seems to be the problem?"

The Ferengi spun toward her, his lobes twitching. "This... this thief refuses to pay for the damaged goods he transported! My cargo arrived with scratches!"

The Andorian exhaled sharply. "Because your shipment was already defective! I transported it as agreed. You want compensation? Take it up with the supplier."

Katelyn sighed inwardly. Different uniform, same headaches.

"Alright, let's start from the beginning," she said calmly, keeping her posture firm but open. "Show me the shipping manifest, and we'll work through this properly."

As the argument cooled into negotiation, Katelyn felt a small twinge of satisfaction. It wasn't the same as defusing a boarding party or running tactical drills on a starship, but it was still about protecting people—keeping the peace. She might not be in Starfleet anymore, but that didn't mean she had lost her purpose.

One way or another, she would always find a way to stand her ground.
