Kinley Garrison

[Deep Space 9 - Bowling Alley]

Kinley hefted the large, heavy, pearlescent bowling ball across the room and onto the complicated machine that rattled and occasionally spat out balls. it was actually rather busy at the moment, given that two shiploads of Starfleet members were on leave at once, and this, asides from the (rather expensive) holosuites, was one of the few options for entertainment here. Steve was here as well, watching her struggle as she finished plopping it down. His head cocked, probably wondering if that was an egg. Lahr, the Andorian she had met the other day, had mentioned that that was a thing here.

After escorting the Only, Myne, to the airlock of their ship the USS Challenger,  Lahr headed to the station's directory to get direction to the small but active Bowling Alley.

When he got there, he was happy to see the Lieutenant already present.  "Sorry I'm late!"

He sauntered in.  "I see you've already selected out a ball for yourself.  Nice."  Lahr looked over the rack of ball options and selected out one that fit his finger grip nicely and seemed to have good weight.  Only after he had set this ball on the rail and bumper system that ran the length of the lane did he go checkout the shoe options.

He selected out a humanoid size 11 shoe and then carried this back to their lane to begin switching over.  For the moment, it seemed like he and she were the only two of the group to be there. He wondered where the others were and if they were going to show up at all.

As he tied his shoes, Lahr noted the dinosaur hologram and recalled that Lieutenant Garrison had stated that she wasn't the programs creator. "So how did you come by STEVE?"

Looking around, Kinley noticed the Andorian through the crowded bowling alley. "œNo worries, you're all good. I was just picking out a ball. They don't really have anything lighter " she joked as she sat down to retighten her fluorescent bowling shoes. The cracking sound of balls colliding into pins was loud, for certain, but it was definitely lively here. Steve perked up at hearing his name. "œHow'd I get Steve?" She pondered for a moment. "œI knew his creator and "œmother", Lieutenant Ardyn Jaeger. I encountered her when I was stationed on the Shran, and we corresponded for a while, and she  even let me study a prototype of a second generation holoraptor named EVIE for a bit, before Evie critically glitched out. When lieutenant Jaeger went to the reserves to take care of her kid, she gave Steve to me to study." She said, inputting in the controls to start a game.

Lahr listened with interest as she spoke of the program's creator and how STEVE came to her to study.   While he did so, Lahr tied his own bowling shoes on.  Unfortunately, the Andorian hadn't heard of the name before.

"Wow, that's generous of her.  What were you studying about him?  His program or his social interactions with people?"

He glanced to his feet.  The shoes were hideous, but he'd been told by some fellow crewmen that it was all part of the game.

Suddenly, the Andorian had a thought, recalling part of classic 21st movie he'd seen involving dinosaurs.  "The original velociraptors were predators, right? So has Starfleet tried making him into a battle hologram yet?"  It was terrible thing to think but he wouldn't put it past some folks.

Zhukdra'shar's ego had given him a bad time this time. Confident that he had the right idea on the location of the Bowling Alley, he had sped ahead to reach it faster, before he realized that the place was much more difficult to find than he had expected. Begrudgingly, after a while, he decided to make use of a directory he managed to see, to finally be able to head the right way.

He came into a conversation between Lahr and Kinley, relating to the peculiar hologram that she cared for. That, and a peculiar place with long, wooden lanes which had some weird-looking cylindrical structures of white and red, slightly tapper towards either end. And, Lahr carried a huge, heavy ball with three holes in them.

He had never found out about bowling before, so he was flabbergasted

"Is this... 'bowling'? It seems... peculiar..."

"œPretty much both. He's unique, even compared to the EMH on Voyager, and the fact that he basically evolves his own programming in order to better understand and communicate with people is kind of odd for a program."

Kinley hefted the ball and attempted hurling it towards the pins. It spun wildly, ending up in the gutter right before hitting any pins at all. Missed it.
"œNot with his coding. The safeguards are pretty deeply embedded in there and it's very difficult to change it without crashing the entire system. It's both brilliant and very much held together by duct tape ." She said. "œYour turn!"

There was only one thing Lahr could think to do after hearing about the uniqueness of STEVE's coding; and that was to give an appreciative whistle as he looked over towards the hologram.

He then watched as the Lieutenant threw a gutterball.  The Andorian offered a sympathetic smile.

"Well, he certainly is impressive," he commented, "And I have to admit, having watched some of the old 21st century movies about that 'Jurassic' era - I am glad that 'battlemode' isn't an option."  Velociraptors were portrayed as quite intelligent and vicious.

When Kinley suggested it was his turn the Andorian laughed and shook his head.  "Nope, this is 5-pin." he corrected her,  "You get two more balls unless you clear pins on this next bowl."

It was then that Zhuk arrived.  Lahr gave the Caitian a wave and gestured to the shelf of shoes.  He dismissed the comment that it seemed peculiar.  Bowling was awesome.  "Find yourself a pair that fit.  Do you want to go next after Kinley?"

He took a moment to answer, as he turned his attention towards his digitigrade feet, raising one to inspect it, before looking over to the shelf once more. He hummed in deep thought, wondering if any would really fit him.

"Ah... yes, I would... appreciate being next after Kinley. Uh... unless you have not played, Shran'Lahr. In that case, I would not mind being third," He smiled as he took a pair that seemed to fit him at first glance, and tried it on. He found the results acceptable, though he also came to find that walking felt stiff and awkward, wobbling over to both of them in a rather funny manner.

"How do these... look?"

Dem Broadshire

[Quarks "" Bowling | Deep Space Nine]
Dem had spent the last hour going from table to table, trying to talk with people, but ultimately he was a little lonely. Remembering that DS9 is not just Quarks establishment, he said his goodbyes to Morn (the only constant person he could talk to) and started to stroll around the bustling promenade. Eventually, after passing several intriguing storefronts and people (most notably Captain Boday, a clear skulled Gallamite), he came across bowling. Dem laughed audibly. He hadn't bowled since his first year academy days. Dem timidly stepped inside the stark neon establishment, periodically squinting is eyes that were used to the darkness of the promenade. He nodded at the bartender, indicating that he would be on Starfleets tab. He then systematically picked a drink, pair of shoes and started to walk to the different lanes, evaluating who would be the best to play with. Dem eventually decided upon a small group of three. Zhukdra'shar, who he talked with in the bar earlier, a lieutenant that he had seen on discovery, and lastly an imposing Andorian male. Dem plucked up the courage to speak to this group of relative strangers. "œHey guys, do you mind if I join?" Dem conservatively inquired.

Kinley Garrison

"œMe too. "œ Kinley said as she grinned and hurled the ball agin, this time actually hitting something! It was the last two pins on the right side, but she hit something. As the newcomer came in, she nodded and grabbed the ball as it popped out the rattling chute. The party was getting bigger! "œWe've got some room for you!"
Zhuk came back with his shoes on as she made the last shot. This one hit five pins. Not bad. "œLooking snazzy." She said, gesturing to him to pick his ball.

Lahr looked over to the newcomer.  "Always have room for one more.  The name's Lahr.  This is Zhuk and that's Kinley."

After the round of introductions, Lahr grabbed his ball held it up to eye level, lining up the ball to the sightlines.  He backed pace and did a practice approach.  Yeah, the pacing was right.   He returned to his start point..  held the ball up, the tips of his finger in the three holes.

For Zhuk's benefit Lahr gave a bit of briefing. "So this version of the game is called 10-pin bowling, on account at the end of the lane there are 10 pins.   The goal is to knock them all down.  Each round a player gets three bowls.   If you knock them all down at once.  It's called a 'strike'.  If it takes two consecutive bowls to knock them down, it's called a 'spare'.   Each pin is worth one point.. the player with the most points at the end of the set, wins."

Lahr then made his approach. Three steps moving in at an increasing pace, dropping and swinging his right arm down along his side with the ball held by the three finger holes.  On his last planned stepped he crouched lower until the ball just skimmed over the oiled floor.  He released as he slid towards the foul line, his arm extended out in front of him, the ball thrown from his hand with a slight roll landed to just to the left of center and rolled down the lane arcing inward.

But the Andorian had put a bit too much spin on the ball and ended up missing his mark of the center pin and instead the ball curved too far left and only took out the back three pins on the left side.

On his second ball, Lahr adjusted release timing just a hair and it made a huge difference. He hit center and took out 5 balls.  That left just the two on the right remaining.

Lahr bowled his third ball and having physically moved to get at a better angle.  When the last two pins dropped Lahr crowed in success.  "Yeah baby.  That's how it's done!"

He looked over to Zhuk and Dem.    "Who's next?"

Both comments from Kinley and Lahr filled him with confidence. Even though both shoes were awkward to move in. He did his best to play it off, outwardly, moving in to pick up his ball. It was surprisingly shiny. It drew him in like a Christmas ball on a tree would, his pupils going wide as he prepared to grab the glimmering blue ball. He stopped, however, turning over to instead see Lahr preparing his throw. He did want to see how this was played.

Zhuk's ears swished as he overheard a voice he believed had heard before. He stared for a moment at the newcomer, before remembering him slightly better. Of course, Quark's. After this perhaps awkward second introduction, he proceeded to smile at him, nodding, "Of course. I am more than happy to partake with more individuals in this... peculiar game."

He accepted the handshake after a couple of seconds. While he found the gesture rather peculiar, he was more than accustomed to it, considering it was common back over at San Francisco, at the Academy.

"I do remember you. Our conversation was rather brief, was it not?" He asked, hoping that he would offer more insight into himself. Oh, how he loved learning about new people!

When the last two pins dropped Lahr crowed in succeed.  "Yeah baby.  That's how it's done!"

He looked over to Zhuk and Dem.    "Who's next?"

Soon after, though, he returned to see how Lahr explained the game and prepared his shot. His full attention was dedicated towards the Andorian, looking in expectation as he made sure to memorize what he had just been told. He wanted to do a good job, after all, though he feared that, even with the technique in display, he wouldn't be able to pull off such a maneuver as Lahr had.

Dem passed his opportunity, to begin with his throw, so Zhuk decided to go for it, taking a deep breath as he finally took his ball. He stared at it for a moment, his eyes examining it with gusto, before he proceeded to insert his fingers over at the three holes. He then proceeded to imitate what Lahr had done, albeit his footsteps were awkward and ungraceful, up until reaching the foul line. He then proceeded to lightly bend over, letting go of the ball with his left hand, before swinging with his right.

After gaining some momentum, letting the ball move forwards and backward a couple of times, and just as he felt his muscles straining, he let go of it. It bounced softly (fortunately), on its way forward, though soon it lost speed and momentum, turning towards the left and ending up crashing onto the gutter.

It caused Zhuk to sigh, as the ball was returned to him. He also made sure to rub his shoulder slightly. He had to be more careful next time.

Regardless of the outcome Lahr clapped encouragingly. "Ooh..gutter ball.. that's okay.  It's your first throw ever.  You'll get the hang of it.  Trying focusing your aim not so much on the pins at end but rather the targeting arrows on the lane a few feet in front of you.  It  helps. Throw again.. you get a 2nd ball when you don't get a strike with your first." he explained.

Kinley nodded. "œWe're not competing too much here." she said after the gutterball Zhuk made. It's not like they had too much practice while at work. Steve squeaked excitedly, watching and almost seeming to cheer them on from his perch on top of the bowling ball rack. "œEven Steve agrees!" She laughed and gave the tiny raptor a scritchie.
We're in Starfleet here. Weird is part of the job description.
