"I don't think I have the access rights to visit the VIP Quarters without explicit clearance from Security or a Senior Officer sadly, but I will try to get some time booked in the Conference Room if we get some downtime onboard and my duties in the labs allow me to."

The thought of the broad panorama already taking hold in his mind and painting a smile on his face. The hot green tea in the cup in his hand only adding to the image. If in fact such a dream could become reality on the Discovery a lot of dreams he had held for years would finally take their shape in an actual experience. His journey to the stars finally taking a moment to rest and settle after the horrors of Frontier Day and everything else that had happened, keeping him from taking a moment to actually realize he had made it.

"Then again, with the current situation in the Labs and our continued shortage in Scientists it sadly might be some time until I get the time necessary."

At Ramort's response regarding not having the appropriate authorization to the VIP area, Rayek realized just how much he took for granted as XO.   "True." he agreed.

Hearing the science officer remark on the understaffing in the science department, Rayek nodded.  "Yes, well, the Captain fought to keep as many as he could but we aren't an exploration vessel so we were deemed the least in need of a full science department - at least until the next batch of cadets are done their training.  In the interim, do the best you can.  That's all we ask."

Rayek lifted his cup and took another sip of his chai.

He noted the Commanders acknowledgement of his inability to access the quarters he himself had proposed. Not wanting to linger on this a bit awkward situation he quickly continued.

"I heard, many from my class have seen quite a lot of changes in their assignments in the last couple of months. I know Starfleet Command isn't offering any official numbers on it, but from what I can gather quite a lot of personnel has to be moved at the moment to keep us out here in space and functional. I just hope the next class will be able to make up for the amount of heads we need up here. Rumor has it they have been pulling back quite a lot of retired Officers too to bolster the Academies Ranks to be able to support more students."

There really had been quite a lot of subspace chatter among the lower ranked officers. The personnel shortage Starfleet was facing was not classified, and threw them all into situations they hadn't really been prepared to handle at the academy. Their instructors had promised them a solid team on their assignments to help them settle in and look up to for guidance on their first postings. Now everything was different. Some of them had even been recalled to the Academy to bolster the Corps of Teachers where no fitting retired Officer could be found or recalled.

Rayek regarded Ramort, as he took another sip of his chai.  The science officer was rather astute.  Everything Ramort had commented on was absolutely true.  However to help limit the spread of such rumors which could adversely affect morale, Rayek attempted to downplay the information.

"Rumors, though some might be based on a kernel of truth,  tend to overinflate the negative. It's in most people's nature to dwell on bad news." Rayek replied, looking to Ramort.  "I would focus on what you can control, and not worry yourself about recruitment practices."

The Romulan set his tea down as he continued.  "Also I would encourage to find and maintain a healthy work/life balance, especially in those times where it is possible."
