Torra dipped her head in appreciation for Evi's words of support.  "Thank you for saying so."

She glanced over towards Saya pensively after George's response.  It was possible, if her promotion came through Torra might be asked to assist with Saya's pregnancy check-ups and maybe even her delivery.  Torra contentedly hoped so.

She sipped at her water, then since there seemed to be a lull in the conversation between Saya and her chosen godparents, this might be a good opportunity to ask something she'd been wondering.

"Saya, I hope I'm not interrupting. but I was wondering if you have names already picked out?  Or is that something that only gets decided after the birth?"

Saya turned to the Grazerite with a slightly abashed look while Kyo chuckled. Usually a name would be chosen before the birth; however, we are having difficulty agreeing on anything. Kyo thinks we should name the child after one of my parents, but I am not... comfortable with that. I would rather we choose a unique name together.

Kyo made a face at her and shook his head. And I'm terrible at coming up with names, so I think we should go with something, or someone, we know.

So we may not manage to make a decision before the child is born, Saya summarized.

"Well, you know my name is out there. 'Judith' for a girl or 'Judah' for a boy," Judy cut in, joking. "Just sayin'."

Max gently elbowed Judy, signaling to her that she should tone it down just a little bit for this public event, and she nodded to him.

"On a more serious note of advice, make sure you choose a name that sounds different enough from either of yours, so there's no confusion when you're yelling across the house," she advised. "Which, I should note, is the natural vocal register of parenting. They don't seem to hear you until you SCREAM AT THEM, and then they listen."

Torra watched the couple as Saya explained their dilemma.  "I see.  I can understand your wanting to decide together.  Perhaps if each of you listed your 10 favorite names and then compared and discussed why each was on your list you could get a better understanding of what the other wants and could find a name that meets both your needs."

When their friend suggested their own name, Torra smiled.  Honoring names were a common thing for Grazerites, though you had to be careful no one else in your same upsol had picked that same name.  The Grazerite turned to Kyo.  "If you are wishing to honor a family member.. Do Bajoran's or Vulcan's have middle names?  You might consider those... rather than their first names."

Saya chuckled at Judy, saying, We'll take it under advisement.

That's a good idea, Torra, to each make a list. I like that.

Yeah, Kyo agreed. And no, no middle names for Bajorans.

Nor for Vulcans. In fact, Vulcans actually have extremely long complicated names. Those they use with non-Vulcans are only a part, the most pronounceable part, of it.

Since both of our names are Bajoran construction, we have decided to stick with that, Kyo said.

Yes, Saya said with a nod. My given name is Vulcan, so I would like to do a Vulcan given name. And the child will have Kyo's family name.

We decided that was a good compromise, but I'm having a hard time wading through lists of Vulcan names and meanings. Kyo grinned to show he wasn't really annoyed by this.

"There's one more thing to consider, when you're living in such a multicultural environment, and that's what the name means in a different language," Judy pointed out.
"Nimrod, for example, is the name of a biblical king in the original Hebrew, but in English, it refers to an inept fool."
"The Irish name Sean, sounds like the Bajoran word for a swamp," Max added.

Torra beamed widely, pleased that her idea had been helpful.  She listened to their compromised name.

"That sound wonderful."  Combined names could be tricky at time though.   Her own for example, most people had trouble with how to address her, even before she added her husband's family name, since Grazerites had their generational name noted at the front much like Bajorans.     There were over 30 Danjar's on her homeworld and perhaps a dozen spreadout all throughout the Federation all born to her upsol that same birthing season.   Torra was her individual name.

But when being addressed by any officer,  Torra could expect anything from Petty Officer Danjar,  or PO Addams.  She tended to prefer  Danjar-Addams but it was a bit of a mouthful so she was open to accepting any of her three names and had, during her time as Ops, written in a subprogram to recognize and redirect to her any one of the three names or variation thereof.

Torra nodded at their friend's add in.   "That's very true."  The Grazerite figured if nothing else they should check the Vulcan names on their lists to see if there were any associated meaning on Bajoran.

Smiling, she looked to Don.  They too might have those same concerns for when they decided to have a kid.

[Holodeck Baby shower]

There was a time a man had a time to relax. Simple. Not caring what was going on. Sitting along with his lovely wife with her as his companion for life. Being with good friends and new ones. He had decided he was going to enjoy listening. There was not much for him to say about the topic of baby names. He had never thought of anything like that. Unless if Torra ever have kids. He has been busy and that was like the last thing on his mind.

"Anyone care for refills on their drinks?" he had offered as he spotted people drinks where getting low as his too.

Torra glanced to the barely touched glass of water she still had in hand, reminded of it's presence by her husband's thoughtful questioning.  She smiled appreciatively towards him but shook his head.  "I'm fine for now, thank you Don."

Then so that his earlier thoughtfulness didn't go to waste, she took a larger swallow of water this time.  Then turned her attention to what foods were set out on the blanket.  An assortment of fresh vegetables caught her attention.  She picked up a square paper napkin and selected out a half dozen assorted exotic pieces, including broccolli, carrots, maaza and a leaf or two of tartoc.

Torra enjoyed eating the foreign vegetables most.  Grazerite oats, grains and grasses were her staple but after 5 years of the same thing, Torra loved the variety that working on a starship among the stars provided.
