You've just finished your shift (We're all on Alpha BTW) and now have sixteen hours before your next one. What do you do? You don't have to do one big post with everything in it. Take your time. Go to the Mess Hall. Have a chat with friends while eating. Make a date to check out a movie. Etc..... Have fun.

Finally, his shift was over. With sixteen hours to kill, Kyle turned the Conn over to Lieutenant Badylak and made his way to the Lounge for a bite to eat. He walked in and found a table in the corner. A few moments later, the waitress approached to take his order.

"You know what I've been craving lately?" he said rhetorically. "Let me have a dozen Paraka wings and a Ktarian beer."

He sat back and smiled as he watched her leave and waited for her to return with his meal.

The end of the shift very rarely seemed to come so slowly, especially for Safefta. Being the work-oriented person that she was afforded her very little in the way of desires after the shifts concluded and the paperwork had been filed. However, this time she chose to travel to the crew lounge-- if nothing more than to take a look out the viewport and breathe.

When she arrived, she noted the captain, clearly waiting for something-- perhaps a drink or a meal. Pardek was not hungry, but...the thought occurred to her that she hadn't made much of an effort to establish personal rapport with the captain at all. A strictly professional business relationship was well and fine, but --as much as she was loathe to admit it-- a personal edge could assist with the efficiency of the command staff.

The short-statured Romulan approached the table. Even 'at ease' she was stiff and stern-- much as though she'd left her hanger in her uniform when she put it on.

"We have had the same ideation after our shift," she said flatly. This was her way of greeting.

Kyle had seen his Second Officer enter and was surprised when she approached his table. they hadn't had time to actually talk and get to know one another since he took over the Discovery and form what he had read in her Personnel jacket, she wasn't one for small talk any way. No better time then the present. he thought.

"Commander Pardek.Won't you join me?" he asked as he motioned to a chair.

Kali Reyes

[Deck 15]

Kali had returned to Ops covered in grease, sweat, a victorious grin that would make the Cheshire Cat proud. Ensign Cooper nearly dropped her PADD when Kali saluted her with a tricorder.

"Crewman Reyes, what on Earth happened to you?" Her hair was jutting out all over like someone liberally smeared gel and styled it that way. Cooper was too perplexed to make her question an order.

"Samuels thought he could get away napping in the Jefferies tubes past the mandatory break," Kali crowed proudly. "I finally caught him in the act!" To her surprise, Cooper was more interested in appearances than tracking lazy shift workers. She ordered her to clock out and discreetly head for the crewman decks to shower. The point was justice was served no matter how mundane it was.

And that was pretty much the highlight of her shift when downtime rolled around. She jumped into the sonic shower, grabbed a clean uniform, and wondered where the hell was the bar Niosa Obrea had sweet-talked her about. Anderson mentioned a lounge as the closest thing to a bar and she nearly passed it entirely if not for a helpful shipmate.

[Lounge]

"Oh..." Kali breathed in the relaxed atmosphere before making a beeline for the bar. "Get me a coffee!" But then something more profound caught her eye. "No wait, belay that order!" She patted the bar down and turned for the billiard area instead.

Kali nearly barreled into the Captain's table and gave Briggs and Pardek a salute in apology on her way. "Hi Captain, bye Captain!" It wasn't very professional, but she was off the clock. And the pool table called to her like a siren's song. She picked up a pool cue and leaned into it. It wasn't the best made cue, and the wood was a bit bendy, but for the night it was going to be her adopted child, flaws and all.

"Player one enters the game!" she announced. "Latinum or drinks to bet. Who's brave enough to contend with Kali Reyes of the Mighty Cue Ball?"

Alexander Wu

[Lounge]

What the hell is down time? Alex wondered, sitting by himself at an out-of-the-way corner booth, PADDs strewn about on the backlit tabletop and an untouched ale by his elbow, the golden suds long having turned flat. Crew evaluations, shift reports, even cargo bay inventories. All required review and signature, and ever since they had put that third golden pip on, Alex couldn't remember the last time he didn't have paperwork to complete. With all the responsibilities of ensuring that daily ship operations ran smoothly, he considered it a successful shift if he managed to get through even half of his 'inbox' with the 8 hours allotted. More often than not, he found himself pushing several hours into Beta, sometimes even longer than that.

Pressing his thumb to biometrically sign off on Kaz's proposed roster changes in Engineering, Alex stacked it neatly ontop of his 'finished' pile before a voice cut through the fog of work, causing him to internally wince. By Gads, she's loud. He was only several feet away from the pool table, having taken advantage of it's relative emptiness, most of the crew usually eschewing that area until much later in the night. Glancing up at the owner of said proclamation, Alex recognized her as one of the junior noncoms who had come onboard a few months ago. By all regards, she was fitting in well with her department, albeit with some points to improve upon regarding dress and deportment.

Catching her eye, Alex gave Reyes a slight smile of encouragement before turning his gaze back downwards, picking up another PADD. Gamma shift variances...didn't I already sign this?

Immediately, Safefta wondered if she'd made a mistake. Being offered to sit down meant she was in for more than the passing conversation she'd been hoping for. Whether she had the social skills or the mental fortitude to handle this would remain to be seen. So, she sat, much as she would in her chairs at her desk-- too professionally for her own good.

Now, something to say. Small talk was not her forte, and Kyle wasn't even one of her few friends-- she realized she knew nothing about him, and no common ground whatsoever made this difficult. She latched on to the first thing she noticed-- a passing glance to where the waitresses disappeared to.

"Are you awaiting something?" she tried.

Safefta quirked an eyebrow at the near-collision, but chose not to engage further. That level of excitement was far beyond her-- truly, it made her uncomfortable. She momentarily watched Reyes have her outburst-- noting that Alex had a more amicable reaction to the sudden disturbance. A 'human thing', perhaps.

The response she got was mixed. Some looked at her, some visibly cringed. Kali's enthusiasm dimmed a bit by the lukewarm reception. Was no one capable of taking an actual break? Sure her department managed the day-to-day activities of the ship and its crew, but she often wondered just how well Ops was doing its actual job socially.

But then why did she care? This was officially her 'day' off. She didn't have to worry about the health of the crew. Leave that to Medical, a part of her decided, and would have just merrily played alone to work on her game if her XO didn't smile at her.

Kali shifted the pool cue over her shoulders and took the long walk over. Anderson always warned her about engaging the elite pay grade - they're supposed to come to you, not vice versa - but she was never a stickler for the unofficial rules if she could get away with it. And if that smile wasn't a subliminal cry for help, then nothing was.

"Commander," she greeted with a friendly grin. "You look like a betting kind of guy. Want to make an example out of your crew?" Because egads, he looked like he was finishing up a year's worth of paperwork! She thanked the stars for working under a much kinder superior.

Sassa

Quarters

Sassa concluded her meditation and since she had semi-promised it, she decided to go and see if Ruthie was free and wanted to practice her Vulcan.

Remembering that Lt. Cmdr Tekin was likely to be wanting to commandeer his step-daughter for some bonding time, and rightly so, and in the interest of politeness too, she contacted the Commander first.

=/\=Crewman Sassa to Lt. Cmdr. Tekin.  Would Miss Falleg-Grix be available for a lesson in the Vulcan tongue sometime in the next 4-6 hours.  I had the pleasure of meeting her on the shuttle coming to the Discovery and she indicated that she would like to learn more.  I promised that when I was free to do so, I would.  I am currently free.  I understand however if you already have activities planned.  Sassa out =/\=

She waited for a response thinking to herself if her young friend were busy with the Commander then she would stroll around the ship in an effort to familiarise herself with it, and some of her new crewmates.

It wasn't without some surprise when Alex looked up at the young woman, a twinge of admiration hidden far below the surface of his expression. I was a crewman like you once, and I can't remember a time when I was confident enough to speak to, let alone start a conversation, with my XO. Indeed, by virtue of his position back in the day, he had been forced to interact with the higher-ups while on duty, but tended to stick with his own department. Anyone higher than his DH was basically a no-go zone. How times have changed.

Hesitating for only the briefest moment, he set the PADD down and retorted goodnaturedly, "Enough of a betting man that I know a hustle when I see it. And from the way you're handling that cuestick, I reckon this isn't your first rodeo. That being said, Ms.Reyes, what did you have in mind for a wager?"

She expected a curt or a polite refusal of her invitation. So his response almost knocked her brain out through her ears.

"Can't get past the Commander," she agreed with brightened eyes. "Let's do drinks. Wouldn't want the rest of the crew see the shirt on your back after I clean you out."

Accompanied by a click of her tongue, Kali winked at him and swung back to the pool table where an extra pool cue waited for him.

"I've actually ordered a meal. Would you care for something as well?" Kyle asked. "It's dawned on me that we really haven't had much chance to sit and get to know one another. Maybe we could remedy that now?" he suggested. "But don't feel like you have to. This is your free time." he added not wanting her to feel obligated.

About that time, Kali started up again.

"They might thank you for that." Alex mentioned casually, blacking out the PADD's screen before placing it facedown on the table. His knees and back protested meekly as he stood upright, discomforting reminders of just how long he had been sitting for. "Been a while since I've played 8-ball, might be a tad rusty."

[Holodeck 1]

Nevir was off duty, and finally decided to answer Ruthie's question about what he did with a show.. and certainly something she would hopefully enjoy.  This particular on was a research opportunity he had once.. a long time ago.  There was a planet that was heating up in the holodeck, with constant earthquakes and volcanic activity.  He watched his daughter as she watched the view in front of her, as the planet finally fractured.  He was showing her an unusual event where the core of the dead planet had a chemical reaction, creating dilithium in the core that literally ripped apart the dead world.

"There are still things we don't really know about it, or why it happens.  But its why many of us called it the Parasite Gem.  Not as nice of an ending as the terraforming planet, but science studies both life and death.  In my case, the life and death of planets and stars.  Of course, nowadays my days consist of watching the other blue shirts doing their work.  Good thing, though, as it leave me plenty of time to spend with you." he said, as his comm badge chirped.

"Shame.. I was hoping to show you supernovas... oh well, perhaps another time." he said, tapping his badge.

=/\= "Tekin here... sure if she wants to go I can send her over.  Just make sure you leave the emotions."=/\= he said with a wink to her, as he reached his hand out to her to take it.

"Computer.  Save and End program." he said, as the cold darkness of space shimmer and the room brightened up as the projectors turned off.  He led her out of the holodeck, asking the computer for Sassa's location.  It only took a couple of minutes to reach her door.  He pressed the door chime to let her know he was here.
