[Training Room]

It was second shift which meant the training room was sparse of crewman and officers. While Kali worked on her fifth mile on the treadmill, her only companion was an Andorian seriously pumping iron in the corner. For his benefit, she turned the holowall in front of her into the icy planes of Andoria when he joined her run and they both traversed the empty tundra sans the biting cold that came with it.

His metabolism didn't last long and she teasingly dismissed him before he could salute at her in gratitude. Then she patted her small, but so not firm tummy. Her BMI was fine according to her last physical, but her muscle percentage left a lot to be desired. With a tiny pout, Kali turned off the treadmill and stalked in disinterest around the weights.

Yeah, no. Her plans changed when she saw one of the new security crewmen walked on by. "Hey, D'Angelo!" she greeted with a grin. "Wanna beat the tar out of your superior?"

Jane looked the Petty Officer up and down before replying.

"'I'm not sure about superior Rayes." She commented. "While I get you are are department head, you are not an Officer nor are you head of my department! Plus, no-one is superior to anyone else, just higher ranking!  However, I can spare some time for sparing if you want a workout. What's your style?" She asked, trying to judge if the enlisted woman had been promoted above her ability or not.

"Who said I was talking about rank?" she challenged with a grin. The nerves in her legs jittered when she stretched them, her thoughts already a light year away from D'Angelo's speech about promotions.

"Let's do D'ghor a favor and work on your hand-to-hand - or my hand-to-hand. Maybe he'll stop glaring at me during meetings." There was a couple of open mats nearby so Kali gestured with her head and walked over. "Self-defense protocols to start. Surprise me. You want to attack or defend first?"

Jane looked at the Petty Officer and raised her left eyebrow. She was used to the proper chain of command and to have a Petty Officer in charge of a department, effectively promoting an enlisted crew member over the head of commissioned officers. This situation was unusual, but since Reyes was being friendly, she had no complaints.

"I'll defend first if you want." Jane said. "Do you know Krav Maga?" She asked as she dragged one of the mats out.

"Sounds aggressive and Klingon." Though it probably wasn't, but learning the thousands of martial arts forms throughout the galaxy wasn't exactly her expertise. Oblivious to D'Angelo's private musings, Kali busied with getting limber and ready to go hand-to-hand with a security officer. Not her brightest idea, but adaptation was something she could always bank on from experience.

She rolled her neck around and pulled her shoulders back. "I practice Wing Chun, but not - you know. I'm not Bruce Lee or anything. For relaxation. Just enough to get by." Once she was finished with her stretches, she breathed in and centered her body. "Let me know when you're ready to dance, yeah?!"

Jane laughed at the comment.

"Well you're half right. It is aggressive but it's not Klingon. It's an Earthen Martial Art that was created in the 20th Century for what what would become known as the Israeli Defense Force. Essentially, it involves quick attacks and counter-attacks along with a robust defense that is based on Akido. However, it is highly dangerous in the wrong hands as the attacks are designed to go for opponents most vulnerable areas." Jane finished her own stretches before facing Reyes. "Ready when you are." She replied, raising her hands into a relaxed defensive stance.

She could tell Kali that the style was created by Tellurian monks to combat Breen spies and she'd probably believe her. But that didn't matter. She got D'Angelo to laugh a bit and she was glad today wasn't the day she had to crack into another mean shell of an officer. Physically maybe, but she didn't want to deal with the likes of Lieutenant Vishu again, who made it very clear that Kali's sudden jump from Crewman to Chief didn't sit well for the three year veteran.

Shaking out those thoughts, Kali assumed the Ju Cheung position and counted her breaths. Wing Chun was primarily for defense, but the counter-strikes were meant to take down the 'trunk' of the opponent... in theory. Outside of her initial physical training in Starfleet, she never actually dealt with an 'opponent' until now.

She didn't count to three when she hopped forward and steered her palm flat to hit D'Angelo right at her floating ribs for a strike.

Jane saw the blow coming and blocked it with diagonal thrust of her left arm. Then with traditional Krav Maga speed she immediately followed it up with and elbow strike with her right elbow to the left side of Reyes' face, just above the jawline. She was holding back but she still felt it connect and hoped it would not knock the woman out, something that the move was designed to do.

It was only her solid stance that kept her from reeling backwards onto the mat when a hard elbow connected to her jawline. A mixture of pain and annoyance blossomed along the area, but Kali was too busy digging her heels into the mat to reassure form.

"Damn, that's a dirty move. You should teach me that one!" she said with a grin. With an unconscious lick of the corner of her mouth, Kali started bouncing on her heels looking for the next opening.

Jane grinned.

"I told you. Krav Maga is designed around counter attacks. Keep your arms up and remember, even when attacking to expect an attack from your opponent." Jane replied, taking a step back and resuming her defensive stance.

That was pretty hard to remember. The only time she had to defend herself was with Yates' mop. Kali didn't know a flying saucer other than keeping her elbows close due to the Wing Chun positioning and that was the closest D'Angelo was gonna get to her taking the advice to heart.

When she attacked again, Kali darted down to deliver a blow to the leg, but deviated at the last second to aim for her opponent's collarbone with her palm with the intent to avoid hurting the throat. Throat punches were kind of her favorite strategy in bar brawls. They just go down so fast!

At The sign that Reyes was going for a low blow, Jane immediately recognized it as a distract. However, she did not know what move was planned so she reacted entirely on instinct. She bounced back out of punch range and swung her right leg to attempt to knock Reyes' legs from under her.

React, adapt, distract. And Kali was pretty good at all three when she set her mind to it. The mat gave out under her when she was leg-swept, but she bodily rolled around into a crude pouncing position and completely forgot about being as 'steady as a bamboo' or any sort of martial arts technique.

"Gorn tackle!" she called out and ridiculously pounced her.

Jane saw Reyes pounce in some surprise, since it was more akin to street fighting than to martial arts. However she decided to roll with it. When Reyes made contact, Jane fell backwards onto her back and performed a half backwards roll. She then extended her legs in a sudden movement, pushing Reyes into the air and to one side.

"Oof!" The wind pushed from her back hitting hard on the mat and out her mouth from the inelegant tumble. She looked up at the ceiling lights and let out a strangled half-giggle. "But ow. This would have been different if I weighed like an actual Gorn, just sayin'."
