T'Lara

3 Days after Destruction of Federation Vessel USS Burke

[Deck 6 - Lounge - USS Discovery]

T'Lara stood in an empty room, her back straight and mind finally completely calm after recent events. Much had changed, but at least now she thought she could take a moment to focus on just one of them: the sacrifice the crew of the USS Burke had made.

Walking around the ship the past couple of days she saw members of the Burke crew making their way to their temporary quarters or coming to and from sickbay for counseling or to visit recovering friends. She knew that something needed to be done to clear the air before they returned to Earth, to obtain some semblance of closure after the heroic deaths of the chosen officers. Her own heart ached when faced with the absence of Captain Franklin, even though he was not her captain and she had barely known him. The looks on everyone's faces, Burk and Discovery crew alike, was enough of a reminder. So, she arranged this memorial service.

They had already paid their respects to those who had perished before they could complete the transporter sequence that allowed them to live in this time, but something a bit less formal was sorely needed. In the lounge, T'Lara set out a few refreshments and a plaque she constructed with the names of those who had passed away along with some flowers. She knew each individual person would hopefully have a proper service once the crew returned to Earth and she wished she could be present at all of them to pay her respects. Her display wasn't really what they deserved, but it would have to be enough for now and she hoped it would be a comfort for all. Once everything was all set up she tapped her commbadge and gave a ship-wide announcement.

=/\= For those who would like to take part, there will be a memorial service for the departed crewmembers of the USS Burke in one hour in the Forward Lounge. T'Lara out.  =/\=

She waited silently for people to arrive.

[Lieutenant JG Nira Said | Lounge | Deck Six | USS Discovery NCC-78393-B]

It turned out that Nira didn't feel completely useless. The evacuees had beamed aboard under proper circumstances and Nira was able to guide them to the various security personnel who guided them to Sickbay for treatment, and that was just in one section. She trusted that Mister Dranik wouldn't scare any of them when they beamed aboard in the other section.

She was, of course, disheartened to find that they didn't beam everybody aboard, and that Captain Franklin went down with his ship. She did recognize an occasional person, like Lieutenant Douglas, the Burke's security chief. She nodded cordially when she saw him with recognition, with a hint of respect.

Naturally, given how she had been running herself ragged for many hours, the first thing she did when she went off duty was to completely clean off all the crap she was covered in. She was even sure she was beginning to smell. Off into the sonic shower she went, and so tired she was that she just simply dropped onto the bed the moment she got out of the shower and let sleep claim her in her fatigue.

It was when she resumed duty the next day when she learned that the Discovery was clear of the Devari Nebula. She was disappointed that she couldn't take part in catching smugglers – and for once, her detective skills would've been useful – but at least she had taken part in something better: Uncovering one of the biggest mysteries in Starfleet, the discovery of one of the lost ships. Granted, they had lost the ship, but at least they saved some of the crew. At least it'll be proof enough to Starfleet.

She had been chatting with survivors from the Burke, though she steered clear of Lieutenant Douglas, sure as she was that he didn't trust telepaths. The reactions fascinated Nira. She could understand their astonishment at not just the technology, but the fact that most infamous enemies were friendly now, even the fact that Starfleet could reach the Delta and Gamma Quadrants. She was sure they'll be amazed with Mister Dranik, who hailed from the Delta Quadrant himself.

When she heard of T'Lara's announcement for a memorial service, she jumped at the chance; she headed over and was the first inside. So far there was nobody but T'Lara.

"Salaam, T'Lara," she said. "Must be the first here. Just us, us two telepaths. Amazing few days, hasn't it, solving one of the greatest mysteries in Starfleet...all while trying to catch smugglers."

Memorials were a difficult thing for Torra.  The Grazerite perspective of death and mourning while similar to that of most sentient races, Grazerites with their much shorter lifespan seemed to accept death as part of the natural cycle more readily.  The depth of emotion she saw others expressing in holovids and from past experience, left Torra uncertain as to how deeply she was supposed to feel.

There were some that of course she would feel lose for more deeply for than others - Donny and Commander Galloway came to mind most notably.  But as strongly as she had fought to keep the Burke officers and crew alive... now that that they had passed, she found she would just rather move on and focus on the living.   But she got the impression that it was expected that the crew would attend the memorial if they weren't on shift.

Torra had search up human customs so that she might attend with Donny.  Black and somber seemed to be the norm.  So Torra was dressed in a long black robe as she left her husband's quarters for the Forward Lounge.  She hoped Donny would be able to join at somepoint.

Along the way message came through over the ships announcements.

Don Damien Addams

[USS Discovery - Deck 6 - Lounge]

The doors swooshed open as Don was dresses in black. Handsome devil he appeared. He knew his wife was at the memorial early. There was commotion as the man walked in with two other officers from the late USS Burke. They were talking about the holodeck being used to do flight combat.

A sad chuckle escaped from Lieutenant Junior Johnson as he continued as he dipped his chin. "I can even see our Captain not wanting to try it. But then that holodeck was amazing. I am going to miss him."

"Me too!" The other helmsman was a Caitlin. "Purr. My sadness will weight like yesha balls. I'll miss everyone. Even the ship. But as any good Captain he gave us everything. Truly a legend. But I am too want to see this Tiger ships."

Don smiled. "I'll see if we can get the program on file for you. Its the only thing we can offer for you now. You got a new start. You can keep in contact with me. It is much faster. I know you guys got all lot to work to do. All lot adjusting to do. You might want to hold on the holodeck after you settle down. If you do. If you like me pilots don't want to settle down," he said.

They all gave a good chuckle.

"Hey let me introduce you to my---" he was cut off.

The female feline's eyes widen up in astonishment. "YESS! That's her!"

"How do you know?" Don asked.

"Oh when you got new species on the USS Discovery one can't help not share to the others. Oh you are beautiful," the Caitlin. Her tail was swaying in excitement. Then  like shiny objects any other new species was in the room she was fascinated by them. Imagine a two year old in a toy section with all neat toys.

Johnson brought a fist to his hand to give a little cough to hide his little giggle he made from his fellow crew member.

"Torra my love, I would you like to meet Ms. Fela and Mister Johnson Johnson. They are helmsman. They seemed to like to get to know you," he explained to his wife. Comparing the hight of Don from Torra's point of perspective. The Caitlin stood about five foot to he very small and Johnson was average male like 5'8". About Don's height.

It took Torra's comm a moment to recognize that the first word in the sentence wasn't a name but a foreign greeting, but once it did it discreetly provided her with a translation, even  though Torra had thought she'd figured it out just by the context.   She was pleasantly surprised to hear the greeting's meaning as 'Peace'.  What a lovely greeting she thought.  It was much like the Vulcan greeting of dif-tor heh smusma.  Torra liked that one too.

Torra dipped her head slightly at Nira's statement acknowledging the words spoken but she still didn't know what was appropriate to say to either statement.  Thankfully she was saved, by the arrival of Don and a couple of unfamiliar faces.

Torra smiled as Don approached, but then blinked at the excited exclamation by the Caitian.   The Grazerite flushed at being called beautiful by anyone other than Donny.

At Don's introduction of the two officers, Torra dipped her head gently.  "It's so nice to meet you both.  Ms Fela..." Torra couldn't make out the woman's rank so kept to the gender title that Donny had provided.  "Mr. Johnson...  my condolences to you both on your fellow crewmates."

Then because the Caitian seemed fascinated by her horns she lowered her head more to be within reach and nodded encouragingly.  "Horns are common on both genders in my particular genus of Grazerite."

Looking to the junior Lieutenant, Torra remarked. "Commander Galloway's program of the Flying Tigers is rather remarkable if you enjoy combat fighting.  I never did take him up on the offer to join a flight, but I did enjoy the flying lessons Donny shared with me."

"Maybe Mister Addams can succeed where I failed. I will, of course, leave the program for you and maybe the two of you can fly wing as Duck flight."

Ian looked about and could see there was a good turn out, maybe too good as the lounge wasn't large enough to hold the survivors of the Burke and those from the Discovery that wanted to pay respects.

"Might have ta move this ta the cargo bay if it gets much larger"

Nira looked up at seeing Lieutenant Addams, Torra's husband...Don, she vaguely recalled his first name... come in with some crewmembers of the Burke...one of them a Caitian.

Nira flinched a little when the Caitian pointed out Torra. She was still afraid of Caitians, mostly because of K'Lizh. Then again, the phobia manifested itself first when K'Lizh lashed out in anger, but this Caitian was mostly exhibiting excitement. She breathed and calmed herself. Not every Caitian was K'Lizh, bad-tempered and reclusive. Then again, it was a good time to mingle.

She then looked up to see Commander Galloway coming in. She noticed the way he was looking around. She furrowed her brow at his looking around, and wondered if there was something wrong with the decor.

Still, she may as well mingle as best as she can before the whole show could be taken to bigger places, either the cargo bay or the holodeck.

"Lieutenant Addams...Don, is it?" asked Nira with a smile, noting the Burke crewmembers. "I see you made a few new friends."

Don turned to Nira. "Yes. The truth I believe 'ALL' pilots are friends. Except when we compete against each other. Then pilots gloves are off!" He exclaimed. His eyes checked her out. Not interested in her. Just a quick look over. "You look pretty. How you doing?" he asked Nira

[Deck 6 - Lounge - USS Discovery]

It wasn't long before the first person arrived, and when T'Lara realized it was someone from her own crew she made her way over to Nira.

"Dif-tor heh smusma," she returned with her own greeting. She hadn't used it since her return from Vulcan and it felt strange to be saying it to her Starfleet colleague, but since Nira had used a greeting in her own language it felt appropriate. "It has been eventful. It has been a long while for me since a mission has gone so far beyond it's original purpose. However I am grateful that some good came out of it thanks to our efforts."

Many members of the away team chose to focus on the fact that they hadn't been able to save everyone, and this caused them to be in a semi-permanent state of regret. T'Lara instead focused on what they had accomplished in saving part of the Burke crew. Unlike some of the away team, she'd been privy to the solution to the situation for most of the time she was there and was better able to come to terms with the fact that they'd done all they could do with optimal results. She waited to see what Nira had to say on the matter.

Pretty soon, the third member of the "Charlie's Angels" group showed up, and more people followed shortly after. T'Lara debated whether to leave the two ladies to play host or stay, but she figured she could stay a little while longer to be polite. Understanding the awkwardness of social situations Torra appeared to be experiencing, she gave the Grazerite a bow of greeting in return.

"It is acceptable to be seeing you, Ensign."

T'Lara raised an eyebrow at Nira in evident surprise. The woman's prose was exceptional and her next statement wasn't too far from the truth.

"An impressive start, Lieutenant. Perhaps you could say a few words at the ceremony if you feel so inclined," she offered. Although she would be giving her own version of a eulogy to start off the proceedings, she was certainly open to having anyone else who felt inclined to offer their words.

As Nira and Torra were distracted by Addams and the Burke crew members, she took this opportunity to make her exit and greet the steadily increasing newcomers. If she'd known this many people would be coming she would have started the event in the holodeck. But she was pleased to have a good turnout and would deal with the situation as it presented itself.

"Deep in the human unconscious is a pervasive need for a logical universe that makes sense. But the real universe is always one step beyond logic."

With her attention on the Caitian who seemed fascinated by her horns, she didn't notice the Commanders approach until he spoke.   She lifted her head to look towards him and offered a soft smile as he joined their group.  "Hello Commander, I'm glad you joined us."

She followed his glance around, and smiled seeing the full attendance.

Torra was relieved when the Caitian's fascination turned to someone new leaving Torra to quietly turned her attention to her husband.  She waited until after Don answered Nira to greet her husband properly leaning her head forward to 'bump' foreheads with him.

Ian smiled warmly at Torra as he replied.

"Even though I didn't get ta meet any of the crew of the Burke first hand, bein' somewhat the worst for wear after that bit with the Borg, I had ta pay my respects ta the fallen. No easy thing ta lose so many regardless of the circumstance."

There was nothing to respond to so Torra continued on her way and soon stepped through the doors to see the two telepaths conversing.

She dipped her head in greeting.

"Lieutenants.." she paused uncertain what to say so simply left it at that.

Luby had heard the announcement and while she was new to the Discovery thought that she should, as medical personnel, be on hand to comfort those affected by the deaths if necessary.

She stepped inside the doors and looked around, she spotted a Grazerite and gave a shy smile.

"I have come to the right place haven't I?" she asked tremulously.

Ruth Sigurdsdottir

[USS Discovery - Deck 6 - Lounge]

Ruth heard the announcement and wondered when she might have to have one for Will.  For the time being he was 'missing', she'd not yet faced the fact of the other half of that sentence in the message she'd received.  '... Presumed dead...'

She decided that it was as good a time as any to put in an appearance and so put on her dress uniform and headed for the Lounge.

Entering she nodded and smiled to those that looked her way, and spotting Ian Galloway she walked up to him.

"Forgive the intrusion, I don't think I know many other people Commander Galloway.  I just wanted to say hi, long time no see.  I agree with what you just said though, I don't know anyone from the Burke but seemed appropriate to pay respects."

In a low whisper she said "If I could have a moment of your time after this, I'd be appreciative.  I doubt the Lounge has any decent Scotch unless you've seen to that, but I'd like to have a drink with you for old times sake."

Turning to the Grazerite and the young cadet, she said "Greetings, I'm Commander Ruth Sigurdsdottir, I'll be your Chief Science Officer in due course."

Looking over and spotting a Vulcan she hadn't seen in years.  "Is that T'Lara? We were Ensigns together on our first posting, of course I was in Flight at the time, not Sciences! I didn't think anything of it when the comms came through, it didn't register!"

"If I were human I believe my response would be "go to hell." If I were human."

Ian turned towards the familiar voice and smiled ad he shook Ruth's hand.

"It's good ta see you Ruth. It's been too long since we walked the decks of the Tempest. I just wish they would make up their bloody mind on if'n they will upgrade or mothball her.

"And I'd certainly love ta share a drink ta old times and absent companions. Last mission was a close run thing, and one never know when one's number is up, The Burke proved that."
