Evandav Bervarn

[Deck 6, Forward Lounge]

Evandav sat on one of the spacious chairs which formed part of the lounge; gazing out of the windows at the empty expanse, he contemplated. He had made a change which had altered the path of his life, perhaps irreparably. The uniform he wore now was not the same as the uniform which he had worn when he left, the roles which he he had couldnt be more different than the ones he held before. His whole being had changed over the course of his time off. Now he was practically a foreigner, in the same way he was when he left. And yet... He wasnt. The majority of the crew were the same, his ultimate commanding officer was the same. All of these contradictions played on his mind, as he reclined his head on the soft chair.

Torra stepped into the lounge tugging at her collar, feeling very self-conscious of the pip that sat there, and little uncertain that she was wearing the right colored uniform.  It had only been a day since she announced her decision to the Captain to make Ops her forever department and Torra was slightly worried that she might have made the wrong decision.

Some might argue that she'd had 10 weeks to make her decision - an impressive amount of time to ponder even for Grazerite -  but it still didn't feel like enough.   Part of her missed Security, not that she'd ever been assigned Security on Discovery but she'd been in that role for nearly a year on Challenger.

Then there was that niggling thought in the back of her mind saying she was wasting all that Medical training she'd taken... and that she was disappointing Dr. Sluchaynyy and Dr. Thane.  They had done so much for her during her time in Medical.  She'd gone from basically a 'dish washer' to creating a vaccine for the Iaba virus!  If she'd stuck it out she might become an actual Medical doctor!

Instead she chose Ops.. why? What was it that made that the place she wanted to spend her work time?  Was it just that she hoped to have more interaction with her husband - and not when he was injuring himself!

She rubbed at her temple, feeling the start of a stress headache forming with these repeating thoughts.  It was a bad as a timeloop.

As she made her was to the replicator with the idea of getting herself a tea, she caught the sight of a face she hadn't seen in over half a year.  "Evandav!  Is that you?"  the Grazerite junior officer approached nearer her head tilting slightly as if by doing so she was getting a better view.  "It is!  Oh I'm so glad that you are back! But wow... what's with the uniform color? Are you in Medical or Sciences now?"

Torra only stopped her approach once she was directly in front of him.  "It is so good to see you.  May I sit and join you?"

Disturbed from his contemplation, Evandav turned round and instinctively smiled. For the voice which he heard and caused him to smile was a voice both familiar and friendly to him. Torra! But the smile quickly retracted when she made the rather blunt comment about the colour of his uniform; the comment epitomising his fears and worries. He did notice however not only the different colour of her uniform but also the new pip that she had. She was a brand new officer! Good for her! He thought and this helped easy any tension or fear which he may have had. The smile reappeared and he said
By all means. Ensign. With the grin getting wider.
Chuckling for a second, he asked How you doing Torra?! God its great to see a friendly face.

The welcoming tone and words of the former security crewman were all the encouragement Torra needed to take a seat.  Rather than sit across from him with the square coffee table between them, Torra took a seat to his right side in the cushioned faux-wooden armchair set was set perpendicular to his own chair.  Torra smiled back at Evandav.

"I'm doing well. As you already noted, I challenged the Academy exam a couple months back and well.  am an officer now.  Still just getting used to it." Torra answered because socially she knew now was not the time to remark on all her various fears and doubts.  Not to a someone who has been away for over 6 months!  This was time to reacquaint themselves casually at first.  "It's great to see you as well.  It's been a while.  Is it rude of me to ask after where you've been all this time?"

From being a lowly crewman to an officer of Starfleet was quite the jump, and he was pleased she had managed to take it. It was a rather brief explanation, but he didnt really mind. Long drawn out explanations werent really the sort of responses which were appropriate at the current time. Now however, it was his turn to explain himself, and now he was rather nervous. He instinctively said No, of course not! More out of politeness then anything. He looked down in discomfort, and composed himself before beginning to speak.

Evandav paced himself back and forth outside the quarters of the Captain. The decision on his mind he had been pondering for a good couple of months now; a decision which would change the course of his life, perhaps forever. A decision which he knew he couldnt really ever turn back from again. His mind was wracked with doubts, every sinew in his body fighting the other, trying to pull him into the Captains quarters and away simultaneously. Finally, though, he forced himself to press the button which pretty much asked the Captain whether he could come in. No way back...

It was his quarters, and he was technically off shift, so the Captain was dressed down, wearing a more Bajoran-like top instead of the uniform.  A mug of Kava tea was on his coffee table as he read information on the Academy, and in the background was a calm meditative soundtrack to remind him of home.  It was personal time... time to just... be him.

But the Captain was always on call, and the chime at the door alerted him to someone outside.  He halted the music and faced the door.

"Come." he said, allowing entrance into his room.  He was a bit shocked to see a security officer, but there he was.

"Mr. Bervarn, come in." he said, putting his mug down.  "What can I help you with?"

Evandav entered the Captains quarter with a sense of unease and stood formally after taking a couple of paces forward. Apprehensively, he asked
Sir, can I talk to you personally. Theres something on my mind which has been plaguing me for a good couple of weeks. He then relaxed before speaking again, believing that what he was about to say wasnt something which he should be voicing from such a rigid position.
I joined Starfleet sir mainly due to peer pressure. I come from a service family. Pretty much every family member you could possibly name have served on Starfleet. And I just felt out of place not in Starfleet. When I talked with my family, they would have all these stories from their explorations across the galaxy; and the final question which my family asked of me was something along the lines of When are you joining up?
So I joined, with a pretty poor education in the only branch which I felt excited me, security. The thought of firing phasers and torpedoes at evil monsters seemed fun to me. But now I feel sort of... disenfranchised with Starfleet and my role. That first experience and all its excitements has worn out on me and now I feel... Lost. I dont know where I want to go next, I have no idea what to do and Ive never been a person who just goes with the flow sir. He pretty much spewed out his thoughts, before taking a breath and continuing

So Ive started to read a few books and looked at different options. And, with your blessing sir, Id like to pursue a change in my Starfleet career. To the Sciences Department. And he left it there for the Captain to digest everything.

Nevir invited the officer to take a seat in the otherwise large space, and listened as he spoke.  Nevir smiled a bit, taking a drink.  "I can certainly sympathize.  A lot of species see the Federation as not only a human obligation, but a lot of the more recent additions, such as Bajor, feel a debt of gratitude that urges us to join Starfleet.  It is hard to resist that call when there are so many around you." he said, holding the now empty mug in his hand.  He stood up and went to his replicator, putting the mug in to be de-materialized while bringing up a tall glass of kava juice.

"Do you want anything?" he asked, taking care of the drink afterwards and coming back to his couch.

"Science... one of the pillars of Starfeet and arguably the core of the Federation.  There is more to it than being a boffin." he said, borrowing the words of his first officer.  "If you want to stay in Starfleet, but not happy with security, then you need to ask yourself one question: what drives you?"

He took a drink and then put it down.  "The key to a good science officer is ambition and passion.  The drive to wake you up every morning and send you racing down the corridor.  Luckily, science is a very large department, with something for everyone.  So... then I have my first question."  The Captain leaned in and looked at Evandav.

"What drives you?"

Evandav sat down and launched into his speech, before listening to the Captain and feeling a slight sense of relief at his understanding. He, shamefully, sort of forgot about his Captains Bajoran background and thought that he would be a little colder. The understanding displayed eased his tensions and when asked for a drink, he was able to confidently say
Just a glass of water please sir.
When passed his drink, he listened intently to his Captain, whilst taking a sip of his cold water. It cleared his throat and prepared him for the question which was thrust upon him and which reached the crux of the matter. What was Evandavs motivation? He took a moment to ponder on the issue before giving his answer.
A sense of redemption in myself to be honest. You know, the whole premise of the Federation is to better oneselves with material need wiped out. To improve, to gather knowledge and to grow into a better person. As a young child, I squandered this opportunity, and now Im lost, a lone wanderer in a vast vacuum. And now, I feel a huge surge of regret, which I want to dispel. I want to change, and to mature into the person which I know I can be. I know Sciences wont be easy. But I feel that Ive taken the easy way out every situation in my life. And now, to truly redeem myself and mature and grow, learning a Science will help me disprove the ghosts of my past. Finishing, he took a large gulp of water and awaited the Captains reply.

The Captain leaned back, pondering the statement.  "You sound guilty for something personal.." he said, not accusingly, but more matter-of-fact.  "Either way.. its a personal drive.  Perceived or not." he said, reaching for a PADD on a side table, and bringing up a service record.... his service record. With his record showing, Nevir handed it over to Evandav to see how the Captain got to where he was.

"I don't know if you know it... but I am a science officer." he said, gesturing to te record, which showed him as part of the Starfleet Science Division, but at this point as a command level officer.  Included in the record was his Academy record, as well as the various degrees and honors he had gotten, almost all in the fields of science.

"And I can tell you right now that the difference between a shining example of the Federation's curiosity and just another blue shirted crewman walking around is passion.  I joined Starfleet as a planetary scientist; my entire reasoning being my own planet.  If I could study what made planets livable, and the technology to restore it, I could help my world prosper." he stated, with a bit a smirk.

"I was definitely an idealist, but luckily I wasn't the only one.  Bajor didn't need me to save it on a noble starship steed, but it did benefit from what I learned.  And that is where the key to my career started.  I joined out of obligation, yes, but I also joined for selfish reasons.  But after seeing what I could do as a scientist in Starfleet, it spurred me up the ranks.  I have a soft spot for the science division, but likewise I also have high standards.  Standards that I expect to be met or exceeded." he said, taking the PADD back.

"In order to be a science officer on my ship you need heart, passion, and knowledge.  Heart is easy to determine.  You are a security officer, you've trained for the protection of others, and from your service record you have been exemplary.  Passion we've just discussed, and at the very least, there is a spark to ignite a fire in you.  Lastly though, we have knowledge.  Not intelligence, but knowledge." he said, bringing up Evandav's service record, and specifically his academy training.  He handed the PADD back to him to review.

"Tell me what I see." he said, gesturing to the academy record.

Evandav received the PADD from the Captain and read over it. The number of awards which Tekin had won was impressive, and dwarfed any qualifications or awards which Evandav had. And it imposed upon him suddenly the enormity of the task which lay before him, knowledge wise. He hadnt actually heard of his Captains career as a science officer. He always assumed that he had risen through the ranks as a career officer, but he had been proven wrong emphatically. He gave the PADD back and he listened to the final part of his speech. And it was at this final hurdle which would stump him. Had stumped him as he was thinking about this decision. For all his passion and his drive, nothing could replace the fundamental thing which was required to be in the Science Department. Knowledge. And the truth was, he had none. And so he said, calm despite the emotions which were flowing through his body.
You would fine none sir. At least, no knowledge related to the sciences. Which rather stumps this whole endeavour... But I am willing to learn sir. Im willing to work night and day, pour all my energies and efforts into this. I just need a teacher sir. He pleaded.

"You'll be no better than a cadet until you do, and you may even need to return to Earth.. though I'll see if I can get that waived.  Are you prepared for this?"

Evandav listened to what Tekin said to him and when he told him about the hardships ahead, it steeled him inside. Instead of perhaps dissuading him, it finally clicked everything into place. He knew that he wanted to do this. That he needed to do this. So for the first time in this meeting, he spoke with confidence and a firm conviction, a conviction which spoke out that he could not be refused; would not of refused.
I am sir. As prepared as I could be in my life.

"So did you end up returning to Earth?  Is that where you've been these past 6 months?" she questioned when there was a pause in his story.

[Lieutenant JG Nira Said | Forward Lounge | Deck Six | USS Discovery NCC-78393-B]

Nira had just gotten to the lounge to enjoy her lunch break. She had stopped by Sickbay prior to it for her usual treatment injection to treat her Orion Gonorrhea. It wasnt long at all and Nira was getting better, though she hoped she had recovered well enough not to have it afflicted badly, after ten weeks in the time loop.

She stopped by the replicator, figuring out what to have. She would only be in the mood for her favorite blend of Arabic coffee if she was in a pinch. She decided on something delicious. She opted for shawarma and a glass of laban.

With the meal and drink at hand, Nira wondered who she would sit by. She hasnt been on the ship long and didnt know a lot of people and

and she saw the tall woman with the horns. Torra. She was talking with someone and Nira figured to sit with her, that is, if the person she was chatting with didnt mind.

Hey, Torra, she said with a smile. She turned to the person at the table. Pardon me, but is it okay if I join you at the tab.ulll.

Then she got a good look at the person andHoly Rings of Betazed, he was handsome. Downright gorgeous. Who IS he?

"Reading the mind can be like reading a book at times. Sometimes it is a lot more preferable to skim the pages, but one needs to immerse himself or herself totally into it to discover the truth, if necessary."
