[Cavern - Polar City - Ri'lowo]

Even though the firefight was rolling down with a victory for the Ri'lowons, to even their surprise, it was still going.  Either this really was a scout group... or their perceived enemy was far less than they thought.

The second in command was clearly infuriated by the Prime Directive response, and he immediately tried to dissuade their leader from helping the Starfleet group.  But whether it was because he was being aided and was injured, or he was more sympathetic, it seemed he was understanding.

"Don't do it... we can hold their parts until they help us retake our own planet!"

"What good is that facility anyways?  We don't know how to work it, and it means nothing in a ground war."

The back and forth continued for a bit, until the leader silenced his lesser.

"Fine.. we will give you the parts.  There is one condition that is more doable.  We need you to disable that facility."

"You can't be serious... we need that..."

"The shielding it creates isolates us from the rest of the planet.  We are stuck here until it comes down, and I am not ready to abandon the polar city.  Taking down the facility will expose us, yes, but it will also restore planet-wide communications.  We can finally see if there are other survivors."

"What about Fi'turs?"

The leader turned back to Lek.  "That, however, is something we can't help you with.  You can take this facility down, but we built a twin on the Us's home world.  Our sister planet.  Taking this down will cause the other to gain strength, and you will have a limited amount of time to stop your ship from being pulled into the planet.  Unfortunately for you, we haven't had contact with them for over a hundred years... not since... our big mistake." he said, sighing.

"If this is the risk you want to take... I'll help you get the parts." he said, gesturing for his comrades to pull him up.  Luckily, it seemed that the Us at the entrance were defeated... at least for now.

Deeper inside the cavern, while supplies and weapons were being carted away, the Ri'lowo leader brought them to what was almost a shrine, and at the very least a memorial.  There it had five parts; four internal components, and the interface panel they needed.

"We will be gone by the time you get this thing working again... if you do, that is.  If you need our help for anything, we will need yours next." he said, watching the away team.

[Facility - Polar City - Fi'Turs]

For the moment, the aliens were less interested in firing than they were to find out who these invaders were.  The one who seemed to their their own leader crooked his head at the weird language that came out of T'Lara, and then shifted his gaze to the even weirder language spoken by the ones in the back.

"Us-sui menah sam.  Ri'lowo vasht se crig!"

He looked to all of them waiting for some sort of confirmational response.  When he didn't understand what was said, he tried again, slowly.

"Ri'lowo.  Vasht. Se. With?" he asked again, and the away team was able to hear one of the words differently.  More of a recognizable word.

"Sumah cu understand us-sui?  Do you reeze kala saying?" he asked again, and more words were understood.  But this time, it seemed he was able to heard words he recognized from the aliens too.

"Wait, I think I mezu that.  Can you understand me?  Are you with the Ri'lowo?" he asked, as the UT finally was able to understand and translate the language.

[Polar City, Tunnels]

Evandav started the process of stabilising the leader, to a background of phaser fire, as well as another firearm which he didn't bother to identify. Concentrating on his task, he knew that he had to employ his medical training, even with the limited amount of materials and equipment at his disposal. As he worked on the leader, he was concerned with the request for assistance in their little conflict with the Us. He trusted Lek to reject the request flat out and he responded as expected. Evandav was confident in the ability to repel anyone who tried to seize Federation technology. Surely modern technology could defeat such primitives? Fortunately however, such modern technology and techniques could heal as well, and he was able to stabilise him into a position where he was able to move
"œYou'll need a lot more rest and further treatment, but I've stabilised you for now."
Predictably, he soon completely and utterly disregarded his advice, afterwards as he showed the away team to a shrine like facility.
He asked Nira
"œDoes this mean that the Discovery will be freed, albeit for a short time?"

[Polar City, Tunnels]

Ahh, bureaucracy. It was almost relieving to know for Evandav that even though humanity has evolved over the centuries to a state of relative cooperation, we could still argue over matters such as rank. Whilst disapproving of how Nira had handled the situation, the results dispelled any concerns. They had managed to diffuse the situation, and praise should be awarded to her for this. Though it appeared that Don disagreed, as he expressed disappointment. He raised his eyebrows in disapproval at this move. Nira had managed to gain a favourable result, and that's all that should matter.

Unfortunately, that wasn't the only concern which the away team faced at the moment. For the words from the leader of the natives was not at all assuring for anyone. Their enemy, the Us, could, if they believed what the leader said, now follow and attack them because of what the away team did. Concern soon flashed on his face and he picked up his phaser instinctively. He was convinced they could deal with the threat, but this didn't mean they could deal with it without repercussions. The leader's fears played out as numerous members of the Us came charging down and firing at the team and the natives. It was also at that moment that he was ordered by Nira to aid the leader.
"˜Eh? I'm probably the second best fighter here' He thought, before he realised he was also the only science crewman there. He had dashed to a rock which provided him sufficient cover, but now he had to leave it to aid the leader. So he popped up and provided covering fire for himself as he raced to the leader and got out his tricorder.
"œRight! Stay still, and let me check your injuries." He ordered sternly, as he made quick scans over the leader's body.

Nira could instantly see that the Universal Translator was adjusting so that they can understand what the survivor descendants - Nira was sure that's what they are - are saying. She could easily single out the leader, and she could tell from his body language that he was cautious and concerned.

It's understandable why, thought Nira to herself. We're the intruders, they don't know who we are.

Nira had to wonder how many First Contact situations involved the Universal Translator not picking up a language immediately, if at all. In all fairness, this wasn't her first First Contact; it had first taken place on her first ship, the Athena. Nira never forgot, into the far reaches of space, meeting the T'Sari and the T'Kori, two rival races that looked like they were on the fringes of warp capability, but upon second glance, finding they were. She wondered what became of them, along with the galaxy-spread anomalies the Athena was dealing with...

The fact that we're all still here and the galaxy, even the universe, is still in one piece must've meant they've been dealt with somehow, Nira thought to herself, brushing it off when she thought about it.

Here on Ri'lowo, one of the Ri'lowo Polar Capitals, there was no warp capability. Sure, they could've potentially have been capable of space travel, maybe even a space elevator, before they wiped themselves out...by the majority. Nira wondered how many First Contact situations were like what she was in now: unexpectedly coming across survivors, or the descendants of survivors, of a nuclear holocaust that destroyed their civilizations, for the most part, before developing warp capabilities.

If this isn't a First Contact situation, and it may or may not be a violation of the Prime Directive, thought Nira to herself, what could this situation count as? Sure, these people don't have warp capabilities regardless of their advanced technology...we'll just have to see.

Nira had noticed Lek trying to communicate with them and then she looked back at the survivor descendants, specifically their heads. She wondered if, from their elongated foreheads, if they would be capable of telepathy. Maybe they weren't, she thought to herself.

[Underground Shelter, Polar City]

Scanning the skeletons, and just through the great gifts of observation provided by his eyes, it was fairly clear that the people were arranged in an almost pre arranged and orderly formation. The battle wounds were clear on some, far less for others. Thinking, he came up with a hypothesis. That some of these were soldiers, and that some of them were priests, all of them praying or worshipping for absolution, confession, some of that evangelical talk. All of this was thrown into the air when the hatch came over with the same ease as had the door. This could now reveal the answers which perhaps the computer and the skeletons could not. Before he could offer to take point, Lek went marching down and so did the others. He sighed, looked at the skeletons in an almost comedic manner before deciding that he ought to join them, saying sarcastically
"œShouldn't leave them on their own should I, eh mate?" With a chuckle before giving a mock salute and climbing down into the tunnel.

As he was moving down the ladder, he was making his own prayers to whoever sat above him in the heavens for there to be no muck or sewage, in an attempt to more successfully emulate the skeletons in the room above. And it appeared that the gods or the spirits or whatever, were listening! For there was none as he made his way to the team at the double. Unfortunately, by the time he joined up, he couldn't recover as they were surrounded by what it appeared was the same natives to those who had died. Instinctively he whipped out his phaser, but the order came to lower his weapon. He sighed and thought
"œJust one widefield shot from the team and the enemy would be neutralised. But no, peaceful it was." And peaceful indeed it was as he lowered his weapon, and waited for the universal translator to do its work, whilst a look of great discontent and unhappiness came upon his face.

Evandav ignored Don's comments with a little annoyance and almost contempt on his face. He never desperately liked Don, especially after their contest on the holodeck. The relationship between the 2 wasn't exactly one of contempt itself. And he ensured that operations weren't affected by any personal reasons. But they weren't going to be lovers soon, that was for sure. So he remained silent for now, as he doubled time it to the emitter.
"œSirs, what's this here?"
He then looked upwards to the building. It was fairly high. A lot higher than he thought it would be. Higher than he had hoped. Fortunately Lek had discovered a door, which was fairly helpful, and he moved to try and open it. He made himself available and tried to assist Lek in any efforts to open it. The lock was magnetic, similar to how the emitter worked. Fortunately, it was a lot easier to open the door than it was to disable the emitter as the door came down with a thud.
"œHuh. Easy enough." Phaser in strong hand and tricorder in weak, he led the way through the building, giving in a little to his tactical training. Arriving, the sight which he saw was a little surprising. Numerous skeletons on the wall. Strange. They appear to have been arranged. Why would the skeletons have been arranged? Whilst Lek tried to shut down the emitter, he began scanning the skeletons, examining them to work out how they died and who could've possibly arranged them in such an orderly manner. Holstering his phaser, he raised his tricorder and took his time on each one.

Don had got himself a shot of the good old medicine. He had hand it over to Mister Bervarn. Then he took the phaser from Nira and placed on his right hip.

"Seem it us, Mister Bervarn," he said to the Ensign. That was a wise choice having the couple to be in separate group. That could put hampers on the mission. Starfleet seem to be more lean back having married couples and families to be on the same ship. Even same shifts.

Stepping out on the planet the heat seemed to slap him in the face. The heat was very harsh. The layer of ozone was thin as heck, he reckon. On earth it was like that.

As Ensign Evandev Bervarn had walked with Don. The grey haired man had turned to Evan. "Ensign how things going with you and Naira?" He was bringing short talk to the man. He had wanted to get to know him more so he had to talk.

[USS Allegheny/Polar capital city]

Evandav oversaw the plan which the team had devised to open fire on the tractor beams on the 2 planets. He watched with a little anticipation, but thought that it would be fairly easy to wipe out the emitters. Unfortunately, his optimism was misplaced, as the phasers proved ineffective due to the nature of the emitters. So the measures narrowed to 2 options, bombing the hell out of the emitters, with risk of collateral damage, or go in on foot, and risk themselves. And as the perfect, moral Starfleet which they were, it was fairly obvious to him which course they would take.
"˜Ugh, being a Klingon is so much easier. You just shoot anything which might pose a danger and that's that.' He thought bitterly to himself.
"˜Although,' He begrudgingly thought "˜there would probably still have a good chance of dying if they did try and bomb the place."

So as the runabout landed, he equipped a tricorder and a phaser pistol. It appeared that the atmosphere was breathable, which was welcome at least. Paired up with the eccentric pilot, he double timed it towards the path which had been ordered by Lek. Taking out his tricorder, he was constantly switching his focus between his scans and of any threats which could potentially afflict them. The small talk which Don tried to engage with Evandav didn't much help, especially on such a sensitive topic.
"œNot brilliant sir, apart from that, I reserve the right to silence" he said with a little chuckle. Then, further, more detailed directions came in. 6 degrees true, 2 kilometres out.
"œWe should march at the double sir. Ready?" He asked before breaking into a fast jog. When Don's enquiry came in, he shouted back
"œThey always appear everywhere sir! I would love whatever makes these buggers survive in my body!"

Evandav pored over the results from the scans which they had taken, and he soon found himself absorbed by all the data which came in. Quite simply the atypical nature of the gravitational distortions caused by the planets was fascinating. In a way, at that moment, he felt privileged by the fact he was here and able to witness something quite as extraordinary as this. Indeed, his face lit up, and he found it hard to suppress a smile from his face.
"œYes sir, the scans are showing pretty much the same results that your scans of the piece of Romulan ship have shown. The smile however was soon wiped from his face when Discovery appeared to have been grabbed by something. A beam of some sorts. Nira worked it out faster than Evandav had, but the result was the same. Nothing like this could've occurred naturally. At least, not in Evandav's admittedly small experience. Bringing up the scans of the 2 planets, he observed exactly the same thing which Nira did. He quickly began to think out loud
"œA couple of photon torpedoes to destroy them should do the job hopefully. Apart from that, we could be able to disrupt the beam as it travels to Discovery through space."

[Ri'lowo System - USS Allegheny]

Lek scratched the back of his head as it dawned on him that he was the senior officer present and the idea left him disturbed.

"To be honest, I think the only reason I'm here is because I happened to be on the bridge when the Captain selected the away team. Mister Bervarn, I suppose you are here as our science contingent, so do some scans and see what's supposed to make these planets so special. See if you can figure out what caused the probe to malfunction while you are at it.

"As for getting closer, I'm okay with that, but something destroyed that ship out there and based on the stress fractures in the debris, it was probably gravimetric sheer, so don't get too close, so that's up to you Mister Addams. There's something about these worlds that gives me an uncomftableness and I rather not become more debris out here."

[USS Allegheny]

Evandav took in the information from both Nira and Lek, as he began to mull over the situation which presented the team and the ship as a whole. A Romulan wreck in a system near Romulan space. Not unusual. A small fragment of his mind reminded him that there was still a potential danger of a trap, but he dismissed this idea from his mind quickly.
"˜And anyways, Discovery was more than capable of dealing with any threat.' He thought.
However, the task he was assigned was a little more scientific than the task he anticipated. It appears that he wasn't about to miss out on an opportunity on analysing the remarkable system
"œAye sir." He simply replied and he aligned the scanners towards the system, and he provided the data of the scans to his superior officers as they came in.

[Lieutenant JG Nira Said | Bridge | Deck One | USS Discovery]

"Ah," said Nira, reassured and filled with admiration. "That makes sense. And that's especially a clever means of covert operations. I apologize for my reaction, Lieutenants. I wish I would've taken part in those anti-smuggling operations back in those days."
"Aye, Captain," said Nira. "I'll inform Mister Bervarn."

As she followed the Lieutenants to the turbolift, she turned to Lieutenant Pardek with a respectful nod, and when she got in, tapped her comm badge, speaking in her most formal tones.

"Mister Bervarn, report to the shuttlebay," she said. "Meet me and Lieutenants Lek and Addams at the runabout Allegheny."

[Lieutenant JG Nira Said | Outside the Runabout Allegheny | Shuttle Bay | Deck Nine | USS Discovery]
Following the Lieutenants to the shuttle bay, up to the runabout, Nira said, "I understand, sirs, if we won't be able to tractor a piece of the wreckage back to the Discovery with us. The last thing ancient thing of Romulan origin we brought aboard almost destroyed the very ship."

She waited for Evandev to get to the Allegheny. She wanted to be as professional as she could. She wondered what she could do about her relationship between her and Evandev. He did make it clear to Nira that he was uncomfortable having a relationship with her, mostly because she outranked him, notwithstanding she was a junior officer...whose next rank up put her to full lieutenant. The thing was, Nira didn't know what she could do to remedy those feelings. She had meant to recommend him to Commander Sigurdsdottir for a promotion, but it seemed like the only option she could do, and even if he were to get promoted, it's unlikely he'd make Chief Petty Officer for a long time, she thought to herself.

She thought of having a word with Counselor Masters at her next convenience. He'd probably know better what to do, and in any case, Evandev was Nira's first fuller relationship; the last man she fell in love with never saw her again after their first date.

She then turned back to the runabout. She had to admit, the last time she was on a runabout was a means of being shuttled from Risa to another ship heading for the Discovery. She never remembered going on a full away mission on a runabout before.

[USS Discovery, Deck 6, Sensors]

Evandav sat down onto a seat and began to survey the screens which displayed all the data which came in from the scanners. The data itself appeared to be fairly interesting. Something which attracted him was the data taken from the surface of the planet. Huge amounts of data flooded the screens and he marvelled at all the scans which came in. History, architecture, geology. All of it was at his fingertips and he was about to enjoy rummaging through the data when a call came in to report to a runabout. He sighed. He didn't know what was going on but he had orders. And a good crewman always followed orders. So he grabbed a tricorder and made his way to the hangar bay in a little bit of a huff and a puff, disappointed he wasn't able to analyse the data here. Where it was warm and cosy... Sigh

[USS Discovery, Shuttlebay]

Evandav arrived with a tricorder at the shuttle, and clambered aboard. Looking around, he asked the ranking officer
"œWhat's happening sir? Why has a team been summoned?"

Quote from: Nira Said on July 21, 2020, 09:38:00 AM

[Lieutenant JG Nira Said | Bridge | Deck One | USS Discovery]

Manning an auxiliary station, given Lieutenant Pardek was manning the main Tactical station, Nira looked on as the Discovery closed in on this...exceptionally unique system. Nira couldn't find the words for it. She was amazed as she was at it, as was everybody else.

What was especially interesting to Nira was that it wasn't her normal bridge shift; Felder referred to it as a "training shift," which told Nira that something was going to happen soon, potentially more responsibilities in her department. It made sense, especially if Lieutenant Pardek was manning the main station, and her normal bridge shift usually involved either manning a different station when Felder was around. Besides, Nira appreciated such a shift; all her non-bridge shifts, which practically meant the rest of her shifts, were spent either practicing her forensics work in her lab or in the holodeck or working in the Security office. A training shift from Felder meant there was greater possibilities in store for Nira.

Of course the science people would enjoy it, Nira thought to herself. I'm sure Evandev will especially enjoy this. It's worth being on the Bridge to see this.

Looking at the system, she typed a message to Evandev: "Are you seeing the system we have arrived in, Mister Bervarn?"

She felt it would be especially prudent to refer to Evandev, while on duty, as "Mister Bervarn." Any man of rank can be referred to as "Mister," and rather than address him as "Crewman," therefore cementing how she outranked him, Nira felt to use "Mister" to address Evandev, an attempt to give him confidence in terms of their work relationship.

At the moment, Nira was more concerned about if any Romulan presence still lingered, and depending on what Romulan faction had prominence in the system. Looking up what's known of the Ri'lowo System, depending on what the Romulans shared, star-chart-wise, at all, there wasn't anything. But Nira merely shrugged that off; it's the whole point of exploring new worlds, seeking out new lifeforms and civilizations, boldly going where nobody's gone before.

In any case, sensors found nothing related to the Romulans. No evidence of artificial singularities connected to warp drives, not even a tachyon molecule indicative of cloaking devices. It seemed that the system was so remote, the Romulans either ignored it or forgot about it. Made sense, Nira thought to herself. Why bother maintaining a military presence all the way out here? There's not even a local population to subjugate. That's the problem with Romulans for the most part up until recent years: they think militarily and belligerently, as opposed to thinking logically like their Vulcan cousins.

But all the same, Nira still had an inkling of concern about the Tal Shiar. They never departed her mind, nor the unknown faction that tried to thwart the formation of the Romulan Free State. But that was her investigative mind going. It would make sense that the Tal Shiar would attempt to hide out here, using the latest technology, even cloaks that didn't emit tachyon particles.

"Sensors show no Romulan presence in the system, Captain," she said, after her scans were complete. "No outposts or ships. Not even so much as a molecule of tachyons. It's no surprise, really. Why try to maintain a garrison, let alone any military presence, all the way out here? Romulans, up until recent years, for the most part, never thought things out scientifically."

[USS Discovery, Deck 6, Scanners]

Evandav rushed around the room, preparing the scanners for the coming rush of activity. It appears that Discovery was approaching a perfect Trojan star system, unique in many ways. Extraordinarily rare in the galaxy, it was the sort of system which Starfleet was created to explore. After 2 missions where Discovery had been embroiled in battle against the Borg, and faced a conspiracy which sought an unknown motive, they were back on the frontier once more, exploring, and now they've come across something which very few people have ever seen in their lives. The system itself had plenty of reasons to be excited over. Firstly, it appeared that a ruined civilisation once resided on both world, seemingly having used nuclear weapons. Secondly, the fact that the worlds were able to keep each other in orbit of the star was incredible. It deserved further examination, and now this was a chance for him to improve his science ability.

Moving towards a screen which projected preliminary scans, he received a message from Lieutenant Said asking whether he had seen the planet. This brought back memories of his previous mission with her. Memories which he wanted to dispel fairly quickly. Whether he could or not for professional and personal reasons is another question. Professionally, the culprits for this treachery are still unknown. They could strike at any time and at any direction. Rumours were still abound as to their identity. The suspicion was mainly placed on the Tal Shiar, but he was t as certain on the Romulans being involved. Personally? His relationship with Nira was on the rocks. He just didn't want to commit, nor did he want to really be in one with a superior officer. Looking at his PADD, he replied
"œConfirmed Lieutenant. Scanning the planet now. The data looks rather interesting."
Before he began to analyse the data coming through.

[USS Discovery, Holodeck]

Evandav's jumped into the rollercoaster with great enthusiasm at first, and with a fairly naive view that: surely this would be alright, even fun! He had experienced Borg; savage, brutal species who posed huge dangers to the crew of Discovery and the Federation. Surely it wouldn't be much of an ask to head down in a safe box at speed. And during the trip upwards these thoughts were confirmed! As they approached the crest of the peak of the ride, he enjoyed the view which surrounded him.

Then they dropped.

Plunging from the sky.

Evandav held onto the side handles as they began to descend, more out of instinct than fear. But the rush of wind past his head, the speed at which they came thundering down, the rails approaching Evandav and the others at a blur all caused a sudden urge of fear within him. Leaving him rather relieved when he arrived at the bottom again, taking in a deep breath when he arrived. Unsuspectingly, he had held his breath throughout the ordeal, and getting off, he had a relieved look on his face.

As they began to talk about their next option, he began nodding almost profusely.
"œYes. A very good idea. I approve" he said with more relief

Nira was allowed into Evandev's mind and she found his concern. It somewhat confirmed what she was suspecting when she saw him lately: He was uncomfortable that she outranks him while they were in their relationship. So she replied back telepathically.

I see your concern, Evandev, she said to him telepathically. We can still be lovers off-duty. But on-duty...let me put it this way: I had been a mere Ensign shortly after I graduated from the Academy. But it was mere weeks later that I got bumped to junior lieutenant. Emphasis on the word "junior." In all fairness, I'm still a junior officer...

And with that, she showed him the circumstances behind her promotion, back when she was on the Athena, the battle with the Liberation, and who the Liberation was and the fact that their leader was an alternate-dimension version of her Captain, and having to take over Tactical when her superior officer was wounded and because she was the second-ranking officer at the time.

...if it wasn't for that battle with the Liberation, I would still be an ensign, Evandev. If I didn't happen to be the second-ranking security officer and my departmental head, who was instantly replaced because our departmental head, his successor, was a spy for the Liberation...I'd still be an ensign. And I once saw your record. If it wasn't for your transfer to science, let alone what you had done, you would've been Chief Petty Officer, we'd both be on the same standing. Besides, there's been people with relationships where women outranked men before. Why, on the Starship Voyager, when the helmsman was briefly demoted, the woman whom he loved, the chief engineer, she outranked him. Then again, she outranks him anyway. All I know is, there's a way we can make this relationship work.

Realizing she has to mention something about the scan, Nira said verbally, "Still nothing unusual. I'll have to inform Commander Sigurdsdottir."

As she departed, she told Evandev telepathically, things will be all right. I'm not a full lieutenant, I'm still a junior officer. And we make an excellent team if not an excellent couple. I'm a lonely girl, after all, and Discovery is the ship I have gotten to know the best friends I ever had. And you, I've never loved a man more than my life...enough that I wish to be your Imzadi.

[Bridge]
Nira had just walked into the bridge when she could see something was  wrong. She was just in time to see Commander Sigurdsdottir getting to the XO's ready room with the cadet and Counselor Masters and she followed them in.

"Commander!" she shouted. "What's going on?"

[USS Discovery, Deck 11, Science Labs]

Evandav's mind suddenly filled with a telepathic messages from Nira, and he began to try to comprehend them. He began to respond to them in turn, as he began to start packing up the equipment
"It's not that simple though. Every day I may see you, have to take orders, serve under you. I will have to go every day maintaining Starfleet rules and protocol, whilst it conflicts with my personal views. It compromises my ability to serve to the best of my ability, it compromises my ability to make decisions which benefit the crew as a whole. My emotions could take over."

He stopped at the wall before thinking
"It's not as simple as precedent. I could've been Chief Petty Officer. I'm not now. I don't know..."
Before he suddenly received a fairly shocking thought. She wanted him to be... Her husband? Fear filled his head as she left, not acknowledging her leaving the Labs.

Nira had noticed. Scans were working particularly quickly. She was quite surprised that things would be done so quickly. Then again, there needed to be time to compile things before the debrief.

"All the scans are picking up is just regular Federation makeup," she said, slightly disappointed. "Nothing unusual...but then again, the scan isn't totally complete, there's bound to be something it'll pick up, but so far, it just registers as an ordinary Starfleet torpedo."

Looking back up at Evandev, she could immediately feel something bothering him. She wasn't reading his mind intentionally; she could feel his disconcertion like how she feels emotions sometimes: Feeling it like it was a heat wave emitting from a radiator or a heater. She had to know what was bothering him.

"Is something bothering you?" asked Nira. "If so, we can discuss it telepathically, if you wish. The mind can be the most private place there is. At least, it is in my opinion, and I find it an excellent means of communicating without being overheard. And we have plenty of time."

[USS Discovery, Science Labs]
Shuddering slightly at Nira's query, more out of surprise but with an element of discomfort as well. For a couple of seconds, he maintained his guard to his mind. He was slightly hesitant to reveal his worries to his CO. After all, he knew of the great deal of trouble caused by revealing secret thoughts to a girl. So he continued his scans in silence for a second before he realised that it was probably best to tell Nira.

His guard relaxed.

As Nira red his mind, he reached the other end of the torpedo, and he looked up.
"Done. Anything?" He asked quietly.
