Character Bio: In the early 2350s, Starfleet long-range communication relays received a faint non-specific distress signal from a primitive beacon on a yet-unnamed planet. Upon arrival, responding crews found the ruins of a small colony. There was housing and provisions for approximately 150 colonists, though only one individual was found; a Vulcan-Human boy appearing no older than 5 Earth years. In his pocket was a personal communication device identifying him as Kanos Byson. Aside from the child, no bodies were located in or around the colony. All of the energy cells and conversion equipment was missing, appearing to have been forcibly removed, save for a hastily-constructed solar collector used to power the beacon. Many of the surrounding structures were charred, seared, or still burning, though it was undetermined what type of weapons caused the damage observed. The child was in a coma-like state and would remain so as the responders transported him back to Earth for observation at Starfleet Medical. Upon awakening several weeks later, he had retained no memory from before the rescue. After consultation with the Vulcan ambassador, Starfleet medical released him into the protective custody of the Vulcan education apparatus for reintegration with his own people. After a few decades of unsuccessful attempts to assimilate into various Vulcan-based entities, Byson decided to join the very organization that saved his young life by applying for a commission in Starfleet.

"Computer, begin recording. First Officer's log, VSS Timok, Sub-Commander Kanos Byson...final entry."
The pause was fleeting, but it may as well have contained all of spacetime. Looking through the singular small porthole in his quarters into the vastness, Byson continued to fasten the clasps on his uniform as he dictated.
"My time aboard the Timok has produced adequate performance evaluations and correlated with net increases in crew efficiency. During this assignment I have been privy to first contact with a variety of species, bore witness to innumerable special phenomena, and participated in the defense of Vulcan interests when required. I have served alongside many proficient officers on both this vessel and other stationary and expeditionary postings. Yet, I have found only sparse connection to these individuals or periods of service."
He sat on the edge of the small bed, taking in a deep breath, drawing his boots on and buckling the leather straps.
"From the devastation of the Dominion War to the Hobus supernova and subsequent chaos that ensued, to countless other conflicts, I have watched from afar. The Vulcan Science Academy, the Exploration Corps...I thought this, here, would be the final fit. The place where I would actually belong and make a difference."
Byson stood up from the bed, pulling his Vulcan Defense Force uniform straight and taught and inspecting it in the mirror for the last time.
"However, I do not fit. I will not fit. Not on this Vulcan ship, or any other."
Affixing his rank pips to his collar, Byson and turned back toward the bed where a single piece of luggage was propped open. Inside was a distinctly rank-less Starfleet cadet's uniform.
"It is time to stop running from my human half, and to start living amongst them."
An alert chime interrupted. "First Officer Byson, report to the transporter room for disembarkation."
With that, he closed the luggage and turned for the doorway.
"Computer, end recording and submit totality of entries to Vulcan High Command."
