Messages - T'Lara

#1

[Bridge - USS Challenger - A]

T'Lara sat at the science station on the Bridge, feeling perfectly at home. She had not been idle over the past weeks, conducting several experiments and continuing to compile her personal library of educational texts. There were always some differences between ship databases, and one of the Vulcan's favorite things to do was to learn each one she was introduced to inside and out. These activities combined with her meditations and martial arts practice made time appear to pass quickly, though she was, as always, acutely aware of each passing minute. Perhaps deviating from routine caused her usual awareness to become...background. She regulated this with her meditation, but also understood that the added stimuli was not exactly a bad thing.

In her sessions, she reflected on when Nira had taken her to see Nirreen. She felt the command team had done what was necessary to contain the female, but as with all enemies of the Federation, it was often difficult to follow the required protocol because of the possibility of escape. She trusted Starbase 153 to prevent that from happening, which was all she could do.

The science officer sent what were essentially weather reports down to engineering, keeping them informed of any changes she gathered from sensors. With warp at maximum, it was imperative to be aware of anything that could potentially stop them in their tracks. Currently it was smooth going, and T'Lara continued to monitor. Blissfully unaware of the stress her fellow crewmembers were enduring...

[Lieutenant Commander Nira Said | Outer Hull | Bottom of the Saucer | USS Challenger NCC-40117-A]

Nira had to raise an eyebrow at Lahr's direction when she sensed some kind of...was that a slight arousal she just picked up? Or was it the suit? And she wondered if McNair was conveying sarcasm at her comment. Nonetheless, she was certain that if anybody on the team stepped on something invisible, they'll know.

Naturally, they had been going in a spread for a while now. Nira was having a pattern of looking at the hull, then back up at her fellow spacewalkers. Mostly she looked over at them because she was expecting that she'll see one of them walking on something invisible...like if they were walking on a mound in a way like they would be floating, and yet not floating away.

At one point, she looked around at the team still walking and then looked down again, expecting to walk on something. Then she looked up to check on the team and saw somebody floating away.

Instantly, she froze and called the rest of the team. "Said to away team, pause a moment. One of us is floating away!"

Then she called up the first transporter chief she could think of...and that was Petty Officer Grelek.

"Said to Transporter Chief Grelek, there's a spacewalker detached from the hull and floating away into space. Beam the person over at once."

Now that she could guarantee the safety of the poor person floating away, figuring that sooner or later, Grelek will bring him or her aboard, Nira paid close attention to the floating spacewalker and then looked back at the direction he or she had floated away from to the point at the hull, figuring out the trajectory to determine an area of a certain radius on the hull...somewhere in that radius, one of the team must've tripped against something or did something in a way to prevent the magnetic boots from sticking back onto the hull.

"Said to away team, sound off," said Nira, calling for a roll call, determining who of the team floated away...and will soon be beamed aboard. "Meantime...hold position, all still attached to the hull. I'm checking a certain point..."

Then she made her way over to that point, her eyes still keeping an eye on where the walker tripped and got detached. She had a rifle on her as a precaution, but in a precautionary move now, she depowered the rifle and stuck it forward like a blind person's walking stick.

"Said to Bridge," Nira called. "Stand by to commence a tachyon scan, I think we're getting close to finding something."

Granted, there were plenty of Romulan cloaks especially of Tal Shiar make that wouldn't give of residual tachyons, one thing indicative of a cloaked object, but Nira felt it would be foolish not to check for something like that, just in case.

She moved closer, tapping her depowered rifle in front of her, moving in an extremely cautious manner the closer she got. When she was at the edge of what she figured was the radius of where the footing was lost on Lahr, as she found out who it was momentarily when the team sounded off, she was moving so carefully and cautiously, a turtle could outpace her. But nonetheless, she was taking extreme care just in case.

"Well, I'd be more inclined to refer you as a floating jinn," said Nira in a humorous reply. "Thanks for the heads-up, Lahr. See if you can get back out here as fast as possible when you're beamed aboard."Nira took Lahr's further directions, remembering that the spot indicated was the phaser array. As she got closer, she could see she was coming close to McNair, especially within the moment he notified the rest of the team. She was rightly within the radius and she was sure, at any moment, she'll nudge her foot, at least, against the cloaked object.

"Noted, McNair," she replied to him. "Said to Away Team, move in to where we are. We have our object."

Looking back at McNair, she said, "Mister McNair, begin scanning for tachyon particles, let's see if a close tricorder scan will be able to confirm that there's a cloaked object here."

Then, contacting the bridge, she said, "Bridge, stand by for a tachyon scan, we'll see if we can get something on a more up-close and personal way."

[Outer Hull, bottom of the saucer - USS Challenger - A]

T'Lara was so concentrated on her task that the request for a sound off was answered almost as an afterthought.

=/\="T'Lara here. Sixty five percent of my designated perimeter has been searched, nothing detected yet. Will keep advised." =/\=

After a fragment of time closely calculated in the subconscious by the Vulcan officer, it seemed that their goal had been potentially reached. Her return to the group required an about face, which was impossible in the EV suit. Instead, she made a slow, roundabout trek back.

=/\="Understood. Returning now." =/\=

She came up next to McNair and stood ready for the next orders.

[The Lounge - USS Challenger]

As the scientists merrily chattered along in most incomprehensible terms, the bridge replied to Nira's request.

"Command Said, Lieutenant Randell here. Sensors were concentrated outward at the time the torpedo launched. Best I can give you from going over the sensor logs is the launch occurred from near our own launchers. Sorry I can't give you more."

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
[Airlock - Deck 9 - USS Challenger]
The investigation team gathered in their bulky space suits and waited to be led out onto the hull. As they waited, they had time to wonder, why, after more than 400 years in space, no species had yet to figure out to make a spacesuit that didn't feel like they'd climbed into a sack of potatoes.
"That's all right, Lieutenant," said Nira. "It'll give us a good place to start looking. Said out."
Within a moment, Nira had arrived in her EV suit with the rest of the team. However, far different from the typical EV suits the other members of the away team had, Nira brought her own EV suit.
These were typically tactical EV suits, mostly for security officers. On the Challenger, however, there weren't so many, given the bulk were standard space suits and, again, mostly for security officers. Of course, Nira brought her own from the Discovery when she discovered how many of these suits were on the Challenger; she was extremely comfortable in the suit and it gave her confidence of armored protection, especially in space, especially in a hostile situation. Plus, it gave her a sort of aura of power, fitting her place on the Command staff.
The Captain ought to remember this suit when we boarded that Borg ship in the Devari Nebula, Nira thought to herself. She looked at T'Kel and nodded respectfully.
"Okay, here's the plan, people," said Nira once she got her helmet on. "We're going to proceed on the hull, starting within proximity of the torpedo launchers. Then we will walk in a spread pattern out to the forward edge of the saucer. Thelal's associates would've easily have snuck something close to the launchers to launch one of our kind of torpedoes. We can rule out the possibility that a cloaked ship lodged itself to the underbelly of the saucer, whether it's a drone or not, because then it would get hit by the torpedoes we launched when the Khranu attacked. Therefore, it's likely going to be something small. That's why we're going to be spacewalking on the hull. Pure and simple. If one of us stumbles onto something invisible, we'll know.
"Once we do find it," Nira continued, "We'll gather up at that spot. Lahr, McNair, it'll be up to you to determine what it is and to shut off he cloak."
Once they were cleared to head out of the airlock, Nira ordered the magnetic boots activated and they proceeded to walk along the hull. Granted, it was going to be slow, considering the magnetization. It was a little unusual to be walking on the underside of the saucer. Of course, Nira was glad they weren't in orbit of a station or a planet.
[Airlock --> Outer Hull - USS Challenger - A]
T'Lara responded to Said's assignment in the usual way, a nod of acknowledgement as she left the lounge and completed the task of donning the EV suit. They should be able to get this job done efficiently, albeit rather slowly, and get the information they needed to finally conduct a complete investigation. The Vulcan listened to instructions and was soon following the rest of the team out of the airlock. She had done this sort of work before, and after a few minutes mastered the technique. She found that matching her breathing with moving her legs, one in front of the other, helped her develop a rhythm as she conducted a search of her designated area.
[Lieutenant Commander Nira Said | Bridge | Deck One | USS Challenger NCC-40117-A]
Captain Galloway's expression indicative that he didn't have the time to deal with the guests meant Nira had to deal with the guests herself. At least T'Lara will have her permission.
"Said to T'Lara, you have permission to take the injured to Sickbay," she replied. "But be careful, there's a good chance one or two of the attendees are infiltrators."
Well, given Thelal's and Nirreen's presence, it felt like a good precaution.
Upon hearing word that the other Vaxians are en route, Nira arose and said, "Well, then, time to go back to the party," said Nira. "Zhuk, you're with me."
[Lieutenant Commander Nira Said | The Lounge | Deck Eight | USS Challenger NCC-40117-A]
Once back at the Lounge, Nira began thinking of what to do next. She could see Doctor Fellows had arrived to help. She still had the thought that there were more infiltrators. She approached T'Lara and said, "You're doing a good job here, Commander," she said. "But there's still a chance that there will be infiltrators among the Romulan delegation. We got two: the ringleader, Thelal, also the captain of that warbird, and a Tal Shiar agent. By the way, you should get a look at her sometime, she impersonated me back at the Tryka system, if you remember when Captain Tekin was framed and you proved his innocence. Now, excuse me a moment, I have some rooting out to do."
In spite of the tense crowd, the malestrom of emotions she's feeling, and the battle going on with the potential for quakes and spills, she approached the Vaxian representatives.
"What do you want now, Commander?" the Vaxian spokesman snapped.
"Just coming to let you know that you have a few more friends coming," said Nira. "Unless you're seeing what's going on outside."
"In those two ships?" the Vaxian sneered. "I'm not sure what you...would I know anybody aboard them?"
"Just the smaller one," said Nira. "And they're all Vaxians."
Not waiting to see the reactions of the Vaxians or anybody within earshot, but keeping a firm eye on the Vaxians, Nira continued, her voice a little louder.
"And, yes, we have them coming and they know what's going on, sneaking around us," said Nira, although she hoped the Vaxian crew the Mjolnir captured would; it was a bluff and she knew it.
"Then how do you account for the warbird?" snapped a Romulan. Nira looked at him and recognized the white flowing robe at once; it was identical to Nirreen's and so it meant that he could be another one of the deceased Doctor Sunik's aides...and it occurred to Nira that if the Tal Shiar knew about Sunik's condition, that would've made him easy to include some "aides" not knowing they were anything but.
"Because they know what the Vaxians know," said Nira, "And they don't want them finding out."
Nira then turned back to and kept staring intently at the Vaxians. One of them was bound to know at least, and either one of them or both or none will have to start feeling fearful, perhaps sweating nervously, by now. But Nira focused on them to see their reactions. They would have to be exceptionally brave if they didn't quail under Nira's cold, hard expression with those black eyes that would be equally cold.
[Lounge - USS Challenger - A]
It was pleasing to see that they were finally receiving the help they needed, and T'Lara spent the next few minutes receiving some reports from security personnel, most of them being given out of habit. With the presence of the CMO, the medical personnel were reporting to her. There was finally a sense of structure. The science officer found herself fitting back into her old role of supervising the goings on. That is, until Commander Said entered the room with the Caitian security ensign she had yet to formally meet. Maybe she would finally get an update on what was happening on this ship.
Meeting up with Nira, she listened and gave a nod. T'Lara had an idea of what she should be looking for already, but having it spelled out for her didn't hurt. The comment about Nira's doppelganger was interesting, but not surprising. The Vulcan had experienced plenty of similar games in her day; the ability of toying with emotions and morals through use of clones or lookalikes, and the exploration of parallel universes. Presence of the uncanny never ceased to elevate unwanted reactions. She would keep a wary eye out, and it was helpful that they had full security now in case the Romulans decided to try anything.
[Lieutenant Commander Nira Said | Bridge | Deck One | USS Challenger NCC-40117-A]
It made sense to Nira to not use the torpedoes. As T'Kel pointed out, a physical count had to be made, something for the eye to see. Still, it made absolute sense for T'Kel to do so. In fact, Nira began wondering if the databanks indicated launching torpedoes...but then, it wouldn't; if Nirreen had more than one infiltrator, he or she or they never had a chance to get to the bridge, let alone to go on tour with the rest of the Romulan delegation.
All the same, the fact that torpedoes seemingly launched still bothered Nira: if the Challenger didn't fire, then was it possible either the Vaxians or the Khranu were hiding...? But then again, supposing they had cloaking capabilities to make use of their offensive systems even when cloaked? It wouldn't be surprising, the amount of secret weapons and secrets, period, the Tal Shiar had could easily make a unique new orbit around Sol if all their outlines were downloaded on PADDs and made a keychain link.
And speaking of the Khranu, Nira easily recognized the Norexean-class warbird easily enough; something about the ship made it easily distinguishable from other Norexean warbirds. Maybe there was some slight scorching; in any case, it was going to get singed again when the Challenger pulled off another Alpha Strike. Naturally, Nira held on for dear life.
Once done, Nira replied, "I have to admit, even an orbital skydive wouldn't match the roller coaster thrill and drop of an Alpha Strike, Captain."
Nira perked up when T'Lara called her, that there were some casualties. The request to go to Sickbay, well...
"Bridge is all right for now, Commander," said Nira. "As to the request to get casualties to Sickbay, particularly from the party, especially from the Romulan delegation, that's up to the Captain, I'm afraid."
She looked to him for what to do. He did have a good reason for the party to be contained. Besides, how would they know Thelal and Nirreen weren't the only ones infiltrating the Romulan delegation?
[Trinam Nirreen | Brig | Deck Twelve | USS Challenger NCC-40117-A]
Nirreen had expected Thelal to react sharply at her the moment she walked into the brig and was given a cell across from him. The moment Nira left with the Caitian, Thelal called out to her, "Really, Nirreen? I expected better of you!"
"I've served my role at the party, Thelal," she said. "I can do my best to help you, help fan the flames, but aside from that, I can do nothing," she added with a shrug.
"Oh, you'll get me out alright, but how the hell will you do it from in there?"
"You'll see," Nirreen retorted with a chuckle. One or two of the security officers chuckled with her, but it was a chuckle to translate into "I'd like to see you try to get out of there." So she sat and watched pensively, although she was taking note of the layout of the cell.
Then came an unexpected tremor. Thelal, naturally, whooped in delight. Nirreen merely rolled her eyes and remained silent. Oh, how he lost faith in her so fast. How much he hoped his ship would save him. Clearly, the whole damn crew shared Thelal's taste in egotistical desire in delivering payback to the Challenger as much as they could. She highly doubted that the Khranu would be a match for the Challenger even if it was attacking only with phasers; the Khranu was stripped of its Borg-based beam weapon before the mission, and not just as punishment. It was still feeling hangover-like effects from using the damn thing; Nirreen was surprised it was still spaceworthy, given how she remembered how sluggish the ship systems were after using the beam weapon.
Besides, Thelal wasn't even aware of the multiple security arrangements on their cells; Nirreen's keen eyesight caught the secondary forcefield around the whole brig in addition to the usual level ten forcefield blocking the cell doorway. Each with their own power source.
Nirreen could figure out multiple ways of getting out of the cell. She'd simply destroy the power source if she struck in the right place. Or...in fact, her mobile transport inhibitor wasn't just a transport inhibitor. With the right configuration, Nirreen could subtly adjust the inhibitor to generate a small electromagnetic pulse that would effect a radius of half a dozen meters, but it would at least knock out the force fields and maybe create a small hole in the Challenger's shield bubble if she was lucky. However, her increased disdain for Thelal, regardless of his plan (which was now falling apart), prompted her to just simple sit there and do nothing. She might even leave Thelal to rot in a Federation prison...yes, that was looking extremely appealing right now.
Quote from: Buck McNair on January 05, 2023, 04:51:04 PM
[Lounge - USS Challenger]
And there went any hope or chance of keeping people calm.
Buck found himself staggering off somewhere unknown to him as the ship rocked and items flew past his head, one knocking off the top of his head as he attempted his best effort to ground himself onto the one of the few bolted on items to the ground in hope that he could regain some dignity in front of the science people. And his crew. Though judging by how everyone had began screaming around him, not many would have taken the time to acknowledged the downed or embarrassed ensign as he made his way to his feet. "Woah, woah, woah! Hold your horses people!" He shouted, trying to sound louder than the combined force of screams as he saw Lieutenant Buehler take the high ground and find a better solution to being heard.
His head throbbed but there were bigger issues that needed to be dealt with. The delegates for the time all needed to be triaged.
=/\= McNair to the bridge, we're getting on top of the scientists. They're all a bit rattled and crowd control is being performed as we speak, some may need transporting to sickbay. What's the situation?  =/\=
He thought it was better to convey what was happening so that they were all in the loop. Perhaps it was unwarranted but there was need for manpower down in the Lounge just as much as he presumed was needed upon the bridge and any major department all needed to tackle the combatant vessel.
Buck staggered over to one of the scientists, taking a knee with a grimace as he felt something twinge in his side. He'd deal with that later. "Ensign McNair. Introduced myself earlier. Firstly, do you have any injuries? How are you feeling? Are you able to move your arms for me?"
He observed as the scientist coughed, propping themselves up on their elbow and staring right at him.
Answered that question then.
"Alright, with your permission, I'm going to get you up onto your feet and get you checked out by one of the medical crew, okay?" With some effort, the both of them rose to their feet and Buck looped the arm around his shoulders to keep them balanced as he walked them over to the doctor. "Capable of basic movement, shaken up, isn't speaking to me. Probably in shock." Buck described, checking on his 'patient' as he delivered him to the med team. "Looks like a couple of scrapes and knocks from what I can currently see but perhaps a 360 wound check might be necessary here."
[Lounge - USS Challenger - A]
T'Lara heard Said's message and began to think of other options since the one she had suggested was declined, at least for now. What she heard told her that Sickbay may not be the easiest to get to right now, without jeopardizing the safety of their guests. Nira could be telling her that it was the captain's decision because the situation really hadn't gotten any better yet.
When the Vulcan overheard McNair's call to the Bridge, she was mildly irritated. The Bridge could be communicating with the Khranu right now for all she knew, and he had just told the whole Bridge that a group of Challenger officers were struggling to deal with a panic situation. She understood the need to ask for help, but she also knew that the medics here would handle things and that chaos would eventually subside. There also seemed to be a general disregard for the chain of command by most of the officers in this room, but she supposed that could be ignored given the circumstances. Realizing she needed to make a response to Said, she deliberately chose not to comment on McNair's comm.
=/\="Understood, Commander. Please let the captain know that the situation here is reaching critical. We have a body needing to be moved to the morgue, and casualties of varying degrees. Those uninjured are restless. Please advise." =/\=
That done, T'Lara walked around and nodded as Lahr put Brown in charge of the body. She didn't know if the morgue or sickbay were even cleared to accept anyone from the Lounge, but it didn't hurt to ask those on duty there. Because of her aforementioned appalling bedside manner, she tended to steer clear from providing medical assistance. Those uninjured or with minimal scrapes and bruises were in line doing anxious ticks such as twiddling thumbs or tapping feet. Being the highest ranking officer in the room, she knew that nothing she could say would make them reassured by her close proximity. Luckily this did not offend her in the slightest, so she silently passed out cups of water and took requests for food and beverages while they continued to wait.
Evan nodded sharply, first making his way over to the bar to reach behind the counter for the standard medkit that was usually placed there in case of emergencies such as allergic reactions or heated arguments. No sooner did he have the kit in hand than Commander Nira had redirected him elsewhere. The poor gentleman who had been punched would have to wait his turn to have his face seen to. Triage demanded that a more serious condition be resolved first.
Kneeling down beside the patient, Evan cracked open the kit and pulled out the tricorder. The utter lack of movement and absent rise and fall of the chest already told him that the patient was clinically dead. His tricorder confirmed this, making it clear there was no shockable rhythm with which to bring the man back to life. Evan presented this information to the first officer, bobbing his head in agreement with her suppositions. "œI suspect it was digoxin," he told her, "œa slow acting poison, which means it could have been administered at any point within the last 30 minutes to 2 hours."
Evan jerked at the sound of a whistle. With all heads turned in one direction, it was easy to find the source. Briefly bowing his head over the deceased, he murmured, "œEs ist hart zu leben; aber hÁ¤rter ist es noch zu sterben. Gott sei mit Ihnen." Rising to his feet, he made his way over to the Vulcan officer. "œI'm Doctor Buehler, the new medical officer," he told her. "œWe will need to move the body to the morgue, but is there anything else I can do to help?"
Despite their best efforts, it seemed that people began to raise their voices again and any attempts in calming the crowd was fruitless. He flinched when the sharp trill of a whistle had broke through the room, and all eyes turned to Commander T'Lara, the deputy chief science officer who made the attempt in controlling the crowd; raising her hand and gesturing for the other crew of the Challenger present in the room to do the same.
Buck raised his hand. "Ensign Buck McNair, operations." He introduced himself to the members closest to him as T'Lara continued to speak. Of course a few voices had began to jump in as soon as she had stopped speaking - some wanting their requests to be made to their own accommodations, or ensuring that the luggage they had brought on to the Challenger. "Yes, yes - I'll sort that - okay, could one person at a time please -"
He attempted to make some space for himself. "You want a - what? A new plant for your decor? Okay, I'll make a note of that, ma'am." He was certain that there were going to be a few odd requests, but as someone in charge of ops, he would have to adjust to.
PO1 ShranLahr ch'Verret[USS Challenger-A - Deck 8 - The Lounge]
Lahr secured the Lounge door after Nirreen's escort left then turned his attention the Vulcan commander after she whistled for attention.  Her words of reassurance were... less than reassuring at least in Lahr's opinion.  Someone had just died in their midst from a heart attack, and the Doval had just been fired on and destroyed.  Nothing about this scenario seemed like the officers had any clue what was going on.
When prompted to self-identify as a crewmember, Lahr raised his hand and almost immediately got swarmed by a 'department' of Romulan scientists.  This bunch had been near the body when examined so their questions to Lahr were a bit less easy to answer.
"What happened Dr. Sunik? Was it a heart attack?"
"I overheard their doctor say it was poison."
"Poison!? What about the rest of us?  What if we were poisoned too?"
The clamoring amongst that group rose and Lahr could understand why.   He waved over McNair to watch the door since most of the security team had left with the prisoner escort.   "I'll be right back.  Am gonna see if the doctor can do a scan of the other to help settle them." he informed Buck quietly.
The Andorian hurried through the crowd until he found the new doctor at the Commander's side.
The Andorian, still dressed in his tuxedo answered for the Commander.  "Sure is, Doc.  We got a bunch of folks that are concerned they are next on the assassin's hit list.  Think you can do a scan of each for whatever poison killed the Romulan?  It'll help settle them down some....maybe keep them from rioting.  After that, if you need someone to take the body to the morgue, I'm sure McNair or T'Prith from Ops can arrange for that."
[Lounge - USS Challenger - A]
A dead doctor, spoiled party, destroyed science vessel, and ne'er-do-well Romulans making trouble. There were no words she could say to lighten the situation. T'Lara knew this, and she knew that if everyone in this room were a Vulcan, these issues would be dealt with so much more quickly and easily. But of course this was not the case, and the whole room was in total uproar. She gave words of approval and direction to Buehler, wondering briefly why she needed to. Sure she was a commanding officer, but her orders came from Commander Said. She expected all the officers in here to go about their duties without taking the time to go through the chain of command. They were in a bit of a crisis situation, after all.
However, it was time to focus on the matter at hand, which was returning order to this space.
Quote from: Ian Galloway on January 04, 2023, 01:39:44 PM
As soon as Randell made his report, Ian responded quickly.
"Battlestations! Tactical, you are weapons free with phasers only. We will nae fire torpedoes until the hand count is finished, less the three we just used ta flush that freighter, we better bloody have 117 torpedoes remainin'. Ops, drop the tractor. Helm move us ta shield that freighter."
He then faced the Vaxian captain.
"Look, I have no idea who you are, but I do ken, you're in more danger than we are. Whatever plot you are involved in, you are now a loose end. The Khranu is here ta make certain you dinnae talk. I suggest, you set your ship ta run at maximum speed and make for your escape pods. We'll send a shuttle ta pick you up."
Ian then signaled for the channel to be closed without waiting for a response. Seconds later, the Khranu fired and the Challenger shook from the hammer blow of a full Alpha-Strike by the Norexan-Class Warbird. Ian had to hang onto the arms of the command chair as the ship shuddered from the staggering impact of so much energy. Fortunately, the point-of-impact shielding has already proven it was able to withstand such a blow, but even with the added shielding, it was only the structural integrity field that spared the Challenger damage.
Davenport at Tactical fired the phasers as quickly as they could cycle, but without the added punch of her photons, the Challenger couldn't hurt the Khranu either. The Federation ship did provide one critical function though, she kept the Warbird from getting a clear shot at the Vaxian freighter, which was accelerating at best speed toward the Federation end of the Safe Transit Corridor. As he saw the freighter attempting to escape, Ian added.
"Flight, I want a powered down shuttle launched via thrusters only."
"Sir?" Lieutenant Espada at the Helm questioned.
"The idea is for them ta remained unseen as the Khranu deals with us and the freighter, so they can grab those Vaxian with no one the wiser."
"Aye Sir."
Ian then tapped his combadge.
=/\= "Commander T'Kel, we'd like that bloody photon count done sooner rather than later." =/\=
=/\= "It is underway Captain and will take 4.3 minutes to complete." =/\=
=/\= "Understood, but I wee bit faster would be much appreciated. Bridge out." =/\=
T'Lara, Buck, Lahr, Evan, and T'Prith each had had their own close call with flying objects and the unprepared scientists as the ship lurched from the powerful blow struck by the Khranu; the actions of which were clearly visible from the many windows of the Lounge. This was a double-edged sword in that it was clear the Romulan ship was the aggressor, but it also let a large number of already rattled civilians see the Challenger taking fire. This had the advantage of stopping requests about room decor or questions about poisons, but replaced them with screams and a panicked rush for the doors of the Lounge.
One of the few areas of the Challenger when it was upgraded to the Trailblazer-Class not to receive major changes was her brig. As with any Excelsior hull, she had eight double occupancy cells, which contained beds, a retractable table and chairs, a water dispenser, and a toilet. The cells were further secured with a level 10 forcefield emitters built into each doorway that had their own independent power source. In addition to the standard forcefield, Ian had ordered both a secondary one around the entire brig as well as transporter inhibitors within the compartment. When the ship staggered, Thelal, unaware of these additional precautions, who was in a cell across from Nirreen, jumped to his feet and crowed.
"The Khranu is here! Soon we will be free!"
Nirreen rolled her eyes and remained silent, no where need as confident in Thelal's boasting or his crew.
When it rains, it pours. A colloquial adage to Murphy's Law, which was certainly being carried out at this moment in time. When the Khranu hit their ship, plates of food, carts of hors d'oeuvres, and whole tables were flung right and left. The more instinctive members of the crowd jumped out of the way of incoming objects and brought people with them to the ground, tumbling like dominos. As a heavy chair came straight for her at full speed, T'Lara quickly leapt out of the way and kept a wary eye out for any more disturbances.
She had seen the attacks out the windows of the Lounge, and steeled herself for the hysteria she knew would arise. Taking a mental count of the officers at her disposal, she sought each one out to make sure they were okay.
"Doctor Buehler, begin triage on the injuries here. Ensign T'Prith, assist him. McNair and ch'Verret, secure this room." She knew her orders, but it was quickly becoming evident that she would not be able to carry them out in this room for much longer. A group of terrified people could not be successfully subdued without using force, but she wasn't about to threaten their guests. Tapping her comm badge, T'Lara stepped toward the door, feeling all eyes on her. In this emotional state, she knew they were all losing the already poor trust they had in her as she was now about to disobey the orders she'd previously given. But she had no choice.
=/\= Commander T'Lara to Commander Said. Report Bridge status. Request permission to beam injured to Sickbay and others to their quarters?  =/\=
She was fairly certain her request would be denied, but it was all part of the social etiquette. By voicing what everyone in the room was thinking, at least one of the heightened emotions permeating this room would lessen simply because their concerns were being listened to. Such a strange and complex game the emotional mind had to play, and T'Lara was just beginning to learn how it was done. Once her correspondence was returned, the Vulcan would have to make her next move. Perhaps the meditation session would be useful after all...
[Lieutenant Commander Nira Said | The Lounge | Deck Eight | USS Challenger NCC-40117-A]
Nira was worried. Despite the security, she wanted to make sure about Nirreen. In fact, the fact that Nirreen came quietly bothered her.
She found T'Lara among the crowd while Doctors Gong and Surith were taken to the bridge. "Commander," she told her, not caring momentarily about that it was the first time she saw her in a week, "can you handle things here, keep the crowd cool-tempered? I'm heading for the bridge."
She knew that T'Lara was the ranking officer after her, at least to be found. But she found Lahr, McNair, T'Prith, Savar and Buehler and told them the same thing and to help T'Lara soothe the crowd.
[Lieutenant Commander Nira Said | Brig | Deck Twelve | USS Challenger NCC-40117-A]
Nira caught up with the security team a moment later and followed them all the way to the brig. Nirreen was finally locked. It still bothered Nira; there was a good reason for her to come quietly. Nira was satisfied that Nirreen was given a good frisking and found not just the very syringe with filled with poison, complete with a needle that was as thin as a snowflake (Nira, with her careful observation, spotted it and made sure the needle was pointed away from a person), but also a few small daggers. But she warned Security not to remove the transport inhibitor, given her subtle threat earlier. She stared hard at Nirreen as she was put into a cell and a force field erected. Nirreen didn't look at all bothered to be there, and that was all enough to make Nira suspicious further.
"Well?" asked Nirreen after a moment.
"Funny, I would've expected you to break free from your guards," said Nira.
Nirreen only sneered in amusement. "My purpose at the party was already served. Thelal's captivity, however, that was unexpected, but it was a good thing I had this," she added, tapping the transport inhibitor disguised as a belt.
"You knew Captain Galloway would try to beam a suspect to the brig," said Nira.
"Why not?" shrugged Nirreen. "I'm always prepared. Besides, even with my slight...alterations, I figured that if there was somebody who looks like you was found at the party, then there would be a means to remain."
"And your purpose," said Nira uneasily. "You were stirring up tempers at the party, weren't you?"
"The very thing to get them going," said Nirreen. "They'll only flare tempers themselves. Especially those delegates in the Federation. Like the Tellarite, it's easy to get them angry."
"Well, you're in here now, so you'll do no further harm," snapped Nira, but she was still nervous. It must've showed because Nirreen retorted, "Oh really?"
Nira pursed her lips and turned to T'Kel, "Double the guard on her. Keep a constant eye on her..."
Her eyes then fell on Zhuk...she was bothered by the way he was looking at Nirreen, and she could feel the infatuation from him. She was worried that Nirreen would prove too much a distraction.
"Zhuk, you're with me," she said, ordering Zhuk at her side. Might be well, he'll be needed on the bridge with T'Kel there.
[Lieutenant Commander Nira Said | Bridge | Deck One | USS Challenger NCC-40117-A]
Nira and Zhuk have arrived in time to see a terrified Vaxian on the viewscreen and the news that the Khranu has decloaked. Nira recognized the name instantly...
"Well, so Thelal may be behind this after all," said Nira. But her attention was long and hard on the terrified Vaxian. She could make a good guess: He's the captain of a ship that destroyed the Doval. And he has been caught. And his terror was definitely a far cry from the two Vaxian scientists part of the Romulan delegation.
[Lounge - Deck 8 - USS Challenger-A]
It seemed that this amiable meeting that was supposed to be solely about the studies of science had been infiltrated, and the resulting sabotage and nefarious deeds had everyone flustered. T'Lara, calm as ever, observed the behaviors of the individuals around her and immediately wanted to be rid of it all. Taking out her PADD, she began typing a message to Randell offering advice on the sensor sweeps. She was about to finish the message by informing him that she would be there soon to assist, when she heard Nira talking to her. Turning, she detected a slight trace of annoyance on the XO's face underneath her calm, commanding faÁ§ade. The Vulcan paid it no mind however, as she received the order to remain in the lounge.
"Understood, Commander. Inform me if and when I am needed on the Bridge." She added the last part simply because it would not take long to subdue the crowd, and she knew there were other Challenger crewmembers here who were much better suited to the task. T'Lara could provide comfort in a pinch, but she didn't necessarily have the best bedside manner.
She already heard McNair putting forth his attempt, and Lahr was doing his best to secure the area. She simply followed suit. First she directed her message at the people to her immediate right and left, but as voice levels rose she soon discovered that her efforts were futile. With a short sigh, the science officer put her fingers to her lips and let out a shrill whistle. The room fell silent.
"Attention, all of you. No one is in any danger, and the situation is handled. The Bridge crew of this vessel are well trained for events such as the one we are currently involved in. There is no need to panic. I will ask that every one of you stay in this room until further notice. If you need assistance, please address a Challenger crewmember, and they will be able to grant your request," she looked out at the crowd and raised her hand, indicating for the Challenger officers and ensigns to do the same and identify themselves.
"Additional food and drink are available from the replicators, so please help yourselves. I will update you all on the proceedings as I receive news of them, but I repeat: you are all safe here." She gave a perfunctory nod in lieu of a verbal dismissal, and awaited the barrage of voices she knew would be making their way towards her. Words could only do so much when panic had already settled its roots, and since her announcement had next to no details in it they would do even less. She toyed with the idea of holding a meditation/yoga session; at least then there would be even a chance of gaining some level of calm...
Savar was late to the party, and was ready in his dress uniform. Naturally, he was quite surprised inside at seeing Lahr in a tuxedo. He went over to meet the new doctor, Buehler and had passed Lahr, McNair and T'Prith.
"Good evening, you three," he said in greeting. "Nice suit, Lahr." Then he looked up and saw the Romulan delegates and raised an eyebrow, noticing an old man who looked like...
"Fascinating," said Savar. "I never knew Thelal had a father in the scientific field."
Then he approached Buehler and said, "Hello, Doctor, good to meet you. My name is Savar, I'm one of the science officers on the ship."
[USS Challenger-A - Deck 8 - The Lounge]
Lahr looked over as Savar arrived and commented on his suit.
"Yeah, I make this look good." The Andorian had heard the line in a favorite movie of his.
Lahr was expecting problems tonight given they were hosting Romulans, but Savar's statement just seemed too unreal.  He followed the Vulcan's gaze to the old scientist and was stunned by what was revealed.
Roohz! You're right!  That looks so much like him. Can't be coincidence."
The Andorian, suspicious, did a quick check of how many scientists were present.
"How many scientists are we supposed to have on board for this conference?  Are they all present?"
[The Lounge - Deck 8 - USS Challenger-A]
Like Ruth, T'Lara had been keeping herself busy with giving tours of the ship to their scientist visitors. The switch from routine to an increase in socialization was taking a toll on her, and the Vulcan added more time to her meditation sessions to aid in maintaining the stoic, emotionless nature everyone came to expect from her. Unfortunately she kept finding herself being pulled away from one task or another, even so far as to arrive late to or even completely miss a Bridge shift. She knew this behavior was unacceptable and made a point to think on ways to be more forceful in breaking away from small-talk. She had to admit as well that her excitement at having a large group of like-minded people aboard did appear at times, causing her to forgo Bridge duty and take on other office work instead.
A few days had passed in this manner when the science officer received the invitation to yet another social function. She had finished a long meditation session earlier that morning, had donned her dress whites despite no indication on the invitation that they were necessary, and was now in the lounge standing among the group of mixed acquaintances and known colleagues. She overheard Savar's comment, but reserved her judgement. If something was afoot in this gathering, she trusted Nira, the captain, and the security team would have a plan of action. The best thing to do for now was act natural, and T'Lara was particularly good at doing so...
Quote from: Ian Galloway on December 12, 2022, 11:35:28 AM
[USS Challenger - Two Light Years from Starbase 153]
Just a bit over 16 hours after her departure from Starbase 153, the Challenger was cruising along comfortably, even if some of her 30 passengers were not. For the most part, the scientists were settling into life on a starship, but a few were having more issues than others. Most of the issues resolved around small things like the hum of engines causing sleeplessness, the replicators not having a specific food item or not quite making it correctly.
However, none of the scientists made unreasonable demands. Several of them wanted to tour the ship and this duty fell to Nira, Ruth, and T'Kel. Having drawn lots, which resulted in a withering eyebrow raise from T'Kel, from the sheer randomness of the selection process, it happened that the Vulcan was the first who had to shepherd a group of 14 scientists around the ship, which ended on the bridge.
Even though Ian knew they were coming, when they arrived, he put on his most winning smile and greeted the 'tourists' graciously.
"Welcome ta the Bridge gentlebeings. This is Challenger's command center. Here we direct the ship and provide leadership input ta the crew for whatever mission we happen ta be assigned."
Of course Shuv Brothath the Tellerite was there along with the Andorians Bab Th'aurtaana and Avaraah Sh'eriathol, the Bolian Enavil Ness, the Denobulan couple Unklara and Phlorn, Galen Benev a Bajoran, Heeda Isim a Betazoid, with a contingent of six humans Alia Wakim, Heinrich Krebs, Panju-Apu Bhatt, Adjua Djidade, Newton Washburn, and Gong Shang.
"Captain, I have gone over your ship's astrometric logs and it seems as if you have a very efficient system, one of the most precise I have ever seen. I would like to meet the crewman responsible."
Ian had to admit he was completely stunned by the almost complement from the Tellerite, but had to suppress a smile as he thought of who Shuv wanted to meet.
"I can have that arranged Doctor Brothath. We have a very special crewman assigned ta that task. Let me have the science department make those arrangements."
At that point, T'Kel spoke up.
"This stop concludes our tour, I will escort you back to your quarters."
Surprisingly, the scientists didn't resist and when the turbolift doors closed, Ian sighed in relief.
"Thank the bloody Maker."
[Outside VIP Quarters - Deck 2 - USS Challenger]
T'Kel had just completed her task of escorting the group of scientists back to their quarters and regardless of her skill at suppressing her emotions, she felt drained by the experience, although she would never admit it. She tapped her combadge in response to the call from Ensign Mrekrerhas.
=/\= "Ensign, report to Deck Two to take control of Security Team Five. Your assignment is to guard the VIP quarters." =/\=
She said in her typically precise and carefully cultivated neutral tone before heading for the bridge to take her place at Tactical.
[Bridge - USS Challenger-A]
As she was running diagnostics on various sensors and systems on this ship's computer and familiarizing herself with each one, T'Lara looked up as the group entered the Bridge. She honestly felt she was almost as much a guest on this ship as they were, having come on board so recently. She did recognize a few scientists from the Academy, both Vulcan and Starfleet. They would have plenty of time to catch up later, but it seemed it was time for the group to move on. Overhearing Galloway speak to Brothath, T'Lara deduced the "special crewman" Galloway was referring to, having seen the AI on the roster and knowing its typical location. Hyperion must be it. Knowing that Ruth was currently occupied with showing people around, the deputy chief offered her help.
"Captain, I can accompany Doctor Brothath to see Hyperion in Astrometrics, and anyone else who would like to take part. A shift replacement to fill my absence will be arranged, of course."
Lol I live in Washington State now. That name pops up everywhere and I drive by the reservation on the way home from work XD
[Personal Quarters - USS Challenger-A]
Now dressed in a freshly cleaned uniform, T'Lara glanced at herself in the mirror. She did not make a habit of looking at her reflection; vanity was certainly the last thing on her mind. However, the change in color from her previous uniform warranted a few seconds spent in thought. As she advanced in years, she made a habit of documenting changes in rank and areas of study by bringing her mind to focus "in the moment." She had a way of storing these events for further contemplation, almost like a scrapbook of sorts. She didn't know if other Vulcans had this way of remembering the past, but it was a practice she found herself to be particularly fond of. With a quick check of the chronometer to confirm her timing was correct, she set off to begin her shift.
"Computer, lights off," she commanded as the room went black and the door swished her out.
[Bridge - USS Challenger - A]
Knowing that the decks of their ship were full of hustle and bustle, she was pleased the turbolift journey bypassed it all. It seemed she was already reverting back to her human tendencies if she found it agreeable to avoid her old nemesis, small talk. She knew that officers from her previous years of service would request her attention if they saw her, and her sense of duty should require her to deal with it all. Still, it was nice that this could be delayed for at least a little while.
Stepping onto the Bridge, she gave a nod to the captain and the rest of the Bridge crew at their stations, and took a seat.
[Personal Quarters - USS Challenger]
"It is acceptable to be back on a starship..." T'Lara sat cross-legged, a candle flickering in front of her. Her meditation had ended a half hour ago, and after the relative chaos that had been a steady presence ever since coming aboard this vessel, the Vulcan found it beneficial to take some extra time to record her thoughts in a log. She had received correspondence about the briefing, but had declined to attend. Ruth would be able to fill her in later, and she had already learned of the conference taking place here. Perhaps it would be a good opportunity to reacquaint herself with the social norms of a starfleet life. Since leaving command of the Discovery, she'd found herself almost completely embracing the Vulcan way of life. She was lucky to have Ruth by her side to handle all the extra talking. It was strange, to think that during her time as an executive officer, making relationships with the crewmembers was almost more important than her academic knowledge and skill. There were bound to be at least a few Vulcans in this group of scientists coming aboard, she should be able to approach them to discuss the latest scientific advances.
"I will report on the conference proceedings as the days progress. End log." T'Lara stood, centering all her focus and weight on the balls of her feet for a moment before leaving to change into her uniform.
[Admiral Hamish B. Gillespie | Bridge | Deck One | USS Galaxy NCC-70637]
Admiral Gillespie turned around and got a good look at T'Lara.
"If you're trying to say, in a nutshell, 'the Galaxy is going to fly apart,' then fly her apart, then," he said. "And...oh, sorry lass, I forgot about yehr pips. You're looking at a man who never grew soft even behind a desk in Starfleet Security, Commander."
That was, in point of fact, true. A high member of Starfleet Security, Admiral Gillespie always took as many chances to get away from his desk in San Fransisco when he could. It was necessary to keep to his toes, especially in light of the exposure of Commodore Oh as a Romulan infiltrator.
The trio of ships, two Defiants and an Akira, even with the Galaxy's boosted speeds, arrived before the flagship did. Gillespie smiled with satisfaction as the task force opened fire. He noticed the Challenger wasn't engaging...
"What the devil's wrong with Galloway?" he said. "Open a channel to the Challenger."
Quote from: Nira Said on November 17, 2022, 09:23:10 AM
[Lieutenant Commander Nira Said | Corridors | Deck Two | USS Challenger NCC-40117-A]
"I will!" Nira managed to call back as she ran, looking back and briefly seeing the bridge crew beam away. Probably to the secondary bridge - scratch that, auxiliary control - so Nira will be sure to meet them there.
Unfortunately, the beam-out order didn't work, given the shields on the flagship were still up...but were gradually being whittled down. Force fields managed to block away the boarders from Deflector Control.
With Zhuk at her side, she continued her pursuit. She could easily sense Zhuk's confusion, and it was understandable, seeing as he had just seen a lookalike of her run by before. She explained as best as she could in a run.
"They're seeking to sabotage the ship!" she said. "Specifically the deflector array! The satellites are self-replicating, so we were going to make an antigraviton bombardment, but then we lost front shields and they boarded us! And SHE is in the lead!"
Naturally, Nirreen was planning to head for the turbolifts and do her best to sound like Nira to ensure computer voice recognition, but the first turbolift she came across, a Security team stepped out. She tried to backtrack, but being stopped by the security team enabled Nira and Zhuk to catch up with them. The boarders found themselves trapped.
Nirreen, looking hastily around, barged into a set of empty quarters, the door of which had been jammed open from the crew's drunken spell; it hadn't been reached yet.
"Computer! Force field above boarders!" called Nira, ordering the specific section. Blocking the boarders from her, Nira and Zhuk followed Nirreen into the quarters, and Nirreen was looking desperately around.
"Trying to find Jefferies Tubes?" said Nira, mirroring Nirreen's sneer.
Nireen stopped and stared at Nira. She made for her disruptor, but Nira threw one of her knives and it stuck on the Romulan's jacket.
"Your boarding parties are contained," snarled Nira, indicating to Zhuk to stand at the door to keep Nirreen from escaping. Of course, she didn't know about the boarders at Deflector Control. Not yet, anyway. "It's just you and me now."
"Not counting the Caitian?" sneered Nirren.
"It's just us girls now," corrected Nira, twirling her knife in a combat stance.
Nirreen narrowed her eyes and smiled. "Knife to knife, is it?" she said as she removed her outer uniform and drew another knife. Then she got Nira's own knife out and flung it at her, but Nira managed to deflect it and then rolled to catch it. She was just in time to parry Nirreen's knife and get a hit from a slap of Nirreen's free hand.
Nira proceed to remove her own outer uniform and it was soon blade against blade.
This is going to be a tricky one, Nira thought to herself and analyzing her opponent. The knife's a lot smaller and she'll be more agile. Chances are, she'll get it into you more easily. Plus, she's bound to be stronger. Just watch the knife, that's what makes her the most dangerous.
[Admiral Hamish B. Gillespie | Bridge | Deck One | USS Galaxy NCC-70637]
"Understood, laddie," replied Gillespie; he can never resist calling anybody under forty "laddie" or "lassie," given his age. While he would've liked to retire, the appeal to space kept him from doing so.
Meanwhile, the trio of ships was keeping up the assault. It was a matter of time before the shields were going down.
"Commander T'Lara?" he asked. "Report. How long before we can crack those shields?"
[Bridge - USS Galaxy]
T'Lara did an internal eye roll at the captain's reckless decision. When he recognized her rank, she merely nodded.
"For some it is not enough to simply achieve the status, because the urge to be serving out in space is strong. It seems you path has served you well thus far."
She didn't know why she was making such observations of this man she'd barely met, especially being in this temporary position. Perhaps it helped to compare his situation to her own, which was not too dissimilar. Her decision to return to the fleet was rash by Vulcan standards, so maybe this was an attempt to justify her actions.
As they arrived at the scene of action T'Lara began to compartmentalize the status of each ship, her command skills returning seamlessly as she began to form a course of action. However, because she was not in the center seat, she dutifully waited for orders. She didn't have to wait long and her answer was almost immediate.
"Shield integrity is falling quickly, Admiral. All are under fifty percent, and Challenger is not letting up." That last part was because a majority of damage was being dealt by the aforementioned ship. The Challenger was making quick work of it, a fact that did not surprise the science officer in the least.
[Lieutenant Commander Nira Said | Bridge | Deck One | USS Challenger NCC-40117-A]
Nira could feel that Ian was a little annoyed - for want of a better word - for speaking out of turn. Was it possible that being in the big chair for a while during the time he was gone...? But she shook it out of her head.
A hail came in from T'Vaan. "I got your message," she said. "You do have to bear in mind that ship is going to be a problem?"
As if on cue, the ship rocked from getting hit.
"They may be on to us," said Nira when T'Kel informed her and Ian that torpedoes and disruptors from Nakir's ship had hit the deflector array.
"Shields are holding," said T'Kel, "but if they keep up the barrage..."
She let it hold for a moment, but it was certainly enough to let it sink in; hitting the deflector array is just as dangerous as a warp core breach. To make matters worse, T'Kel picked up some ships backing up the battleship coming in. The Kranu, damaged as it is, is in the lead, with two Reman saifs and two Romulan-made K'tingas following behind, confirming further involvement from rogue Remans.
"Don't worry," said T'Vaan, "I sent a call out for help. They should be here any minute..."
Once again, it seemed to happen on cue. T'Kel received a transmission...
"Sirs, we have two squadrons of starships incoming. One Free State, another Starfleet."
The Free State squadron, consisting of two Mogai cruisers and two Harpies arrived first and began engaging the battleship, forcing Thelal's own squadron to turn around.
"I'm not surprised they arrived first," said T'Vaan. "They're the ships that first saw you and had been investigating that gravimetric affect from a distance. Your fleet should get there later than us...oh, and one of the ships mentioned sending regards from the Valdore's command crew, saying they regret not coming to help."
"The Starfleet ships will be here within ten minutes," T'Kel reported.
"Good timing," said Nira. "Give us two ships time to charge our antigravitons..."
Just then, the Kranu sent a burst that took out the Challenger's front shields. This took everybody by surprise, and the front shields were enough; just as T'Kel was trying to figure out what hit them, troops of Tal Shiar and Reman boarders beamed aboard. Nirreen beamed in front of the command staff, aiming her disruptor at both of them. Nira stood up and stood forward before Ian, an effort to protect him, and Nirreen aimed her disruptor at her, keeping her at bay. Nira was astonished as well as intimidated; Nirreen was exactly the same height.
"Nice try," said Nirreen with a sneer. "We did anticipate you'd try antigravitons when Nakir decided on having the satellites have self-replicating capabilities in an attack."
"So the Tal Shiar's working with this Nakir," Nira said with narrowed eyes.
"We may not think much of Remans," said Nirreen, "but Nakir can be charming when he can be. Thelal regrets not tending to Galloway in person, at least he has the sense to be more concerned about the welfare of his ship. He did also convey his anticipating spinning on the wreckage of this 'antique.' Like spinning on one's grave."
Nira was looking subtly around. The boarders had everybody at gunpoint. She felt that if she could, it would be best to try to keep Nirreen busy, or even try to hold her in gunpoint in turn. She probably guessed there were more boarders out to sabotage the deflector array.
Meanwhile, a group of Romulans were taken by surprise when they ran into Zhuk, who was on the way to the armory...
[Admiral Hamish B. Gillespie | Bridge | Deck One | USS Galaxy NCC-70637]
"We in range yet?" Admiral Gillespie asked.
"Not yet, Admiral, sir," said the helmsman. "The Rabin, the Horizon and the Moscow are going to overtake us before we get there."
The admiral cursed the Galaxy's speed. For all the use of the admiralty to use the first ever Galaxy-class over the years, he hated to have use of it. He only happened to be on the ship on inspection when the distress call came for a Free State ship needing help for the Challenger. Not to mention the Galaxy itself was to transport transferring personnel to the Challenger, though it was expected to wait for it at Starbase 153...
He looked over at the temporary science officer of the ship and said, "What's your assessment of the situation, Looftenant Commander? We hafteh fly the old boffin apart if need be?"
[Bridge - USS Galaxy]
T'Lara sat at the science station on the Galaxy, dutifully keeping watch of the Challenger and the Free State ship. She hadn't expected to be interfering in a political conflict on the way over to her transfer, but she supposed the odds were high as they were in Romulan space. She was reminded of the many similar instances she experienced on the Discovery, and was slightly comforted by the fact that she wasn't in the command seat this time around.
Hearing the strange Scottish words uttered by the admiral, she looked up from her musings and took a moment to decipher what she heard. She hadn't paid much attention to her commanding officer, simply following orders and going about her business on what was supposed to be a simple trip. Now she looked more closely at the man with the salt and pepper hair, sharp cheekbones, and intense glare. He was different from most human admirals she'd encountered, and his stern countenance was one she was used to.
"I would need more information from several components of the situation to give an accurate answer, Admiral, however I would advise against pushing the engines past capacity. In my experience, Starfleet crews have an impeccable ability to hold their own in seemingly dire situations. I expect my new assignment is no different."
The Vulcan gave a slight nod as her eyes slid back to the console and watched their ETA decrease slightly with the increase of ship speed. She knew the chief engineer would push the limits like they always seemed to do, so she kept a wary eye out for any trouble afoot.
