Hey all,

This is the discussion area for the second half of our mission.  Please feel free to tie up any loose ends on the old mission, which I will keep up for a couple of days.

Mission Title:The Slave Minders

NOTE:  This is more of an ethics-morality exploration than a standard mission.  There is little action in this scenario, but it could be valuable for character building and development of the setting.

Synopsis: A delegation from the Dord come to the station to establish diplomatic relations and trade with the Federation.  But the Dord are a race of slavers, who treat enslaved members of their own race (and some captured individuals) like garbage property.  Does the philosophy of infinite diversity and peaceful openness have room for such monstrous people?

Starting Point: A delegation from the Dord come to the station to establish diplomatic relations and trade with the Federation.

End Goal: The CO and Station personnel must come to terms with the dark nature of some galactic species, and decide whether they can stomach friendly relations with monstrous cultures who- despite their evil ways- approach the Federation in a friendly fashion.

Story points that must be passed?:

1) A delegation from the Dord come to the station to establish diplomatic relations and trade with the Federation.

1a) The Dord are very gregarious and polite, and they want to establish friendly diplomatic relations and trade.

1b) The Dord are also evil slaveholders who hold enslaved sentients in contempt.

1c) Their spacefaring technology largely relies on slavery, as they used enslaved telekinetics from their own species to move their ships at sublight velocities, and have a special technology that converts telekinetic energies to power their warp cores.  This allows their ships to move at up to Warp 5, and makes them incredibly nimble and able to move in strange ways  without any emissions.  But they have many hundreds of enslaved telekinetics on each of their huge Galleon government trading vessels.

1d) The Dord initially bring personal slaves with them onto the station.  But the slaves are so cowed into submission that they make no request to be freed, nor will they even confirm they are slaves.  When mistrated by their Masters and Mistresses, they will refuse to press charges, and the Dord themselves will openly laugh at such a notion that they can be charged for crimes against their 'servants.'

2) There may be security incidents as Dord are witnessed mistreating their slaves in public.  This may result in diplomatic crisis as security may take slaves away from master Dords (against their will) and try to bring the Dord Masters up on charges, only to have both the slaves and the Dord rail against it.  How do you save someone who energetically resists being saved?

3) Federation policy is one of Infinite Diversity, accepting different cultures, and not reacting with hostility.  Policy says the Feds should play nice with this newly contacted species.  But each person who interacts with the Dord must grapple with their own ethics and morals versus Federation policy.  The officers and CO may even request that the Federation not establish any kind of diplomatic relationship with the Dord, only to be told that the Federation isn't in the business of making enemies with other cultures, particularly in a new region of space where the Federation foothold is still tenuous.

4) The Dord request to set up an embassy on the station.

POSSIBILITY 1: The CO of the station accepts the placement of an embassy under pressure from superiors, and the whole station feels dirtied by the presence of such a species.  Especially now that the Dord envoys gain diplomatic status and immunities.

POSSIBILITY 2: The CO of the station pushes back against their superiors and rejects the Dord embassy.  The Dord are offended and leave in a huff, promising that if they cannot be friends, then they will be enemies. The CO's career could possibly be damaged (though they will probably not be replaced on the strength of this one incident), but there are some things the CO will simply not stand for, at any price.  The officers and crew doubtless have their own feelings about all of this.

If Possibility 2 is manifested, the story ends with a rumor passed along by the Ferengi- The Dord have signed an alliance with the New Dominion...

Departments: (To make sure everyone has something to do.)

- Flight: The Flight Officer may find the flight characteristics of the Dord ship fascinating until they learn how the Dord accomplish it.  They will also grapple with the moral and ethical dilemmas- hopefully discussing it with other members of the station staff.

- Engineering: Like the Flight Officer, Engineering will doubtless be fascinated by the Dord tech... until they find out how those engines work.  They will also grapple with the moral and ethical dilemmas- hopefully discussing it with other members of the station staff.

- Operations: They will grapple with the moral and ethical dilemmas- hopefully discussing it with other members of the station staff.

- Security and tactical:  They will probably respond to incidents involving mistreatment of slaves and attempt to free the slaves, but find they are doing so against the will of both slave and master, and creating a diplomatic incident in the process.

- Medical:  They will probably examine any confiscated slaves and conduct psychological interviews.

- Science: The Science of how the Dord operate their vessels is actually probably quite interesting.  If repugnant.  The Science officers will probably have the same discussions and moral dilemmas as everyone else in interacting with the Dord.

Mission Title:The Delusion Syndrome

Synopsis: A delegation from a new Gamma Quadrant species called the Numati (from the Numat system) come to the station.  The Numati are beautiful humanoids with a blue crystal-like sphere on their foreheads.  They are touch telepaths, and greet others by extending a finger to touch this spot on the forehead.  This allows them to sense the intentions of strangers, and the warmth of friends.  The Numati are very friendly and interested in meeting everyone... but they may be carrying a terrible danger.

Starting Point: A delegation from a new Gamma Quadrant species called the Numati (from the Numat system) come to the station.

End Goal: The Doctors/Science Officers on Katra find a way to reverse the mental damage and restore the station to sanity.

Story points that must be passed?:

1) A delegation from a new Gamma Quadrant species called the Numati (from the Numat system, location unknown) come to the station.

1a) The Numati are a previously uncontacted Gamma Quadrant species who have reached Warp 4 technology.

1b) The Numati bring a delegation of 100 individuals who form their 'First Contact Group.'  They are xenobiologists, psychologists, sociologists, political scientists, and others who are in charge of meeting and getting to know a new species so they can report on that species' ways and intentions to their government.

1c) The Numati received reports of a Federation presence in the Meridian system and have been travelling for a month to get here so that they can assess the Federation using their First Contact procedures.

1d) The Numati express fear of another race in the Gamma Quadrant named the Dord, who are slavers.  It was a disasterous contact with the Dord that caused them to adopt their current First Contact technique of holistically assessing a civilization before revealing the location of their own homeworld.

1e) The Numati are touch-telepaths, and touch everyone they meet as part of a standard greeting.  This allows them to sense the surface thoughts and intentions of others.

2) The Numati try to meet as many people as possible, and experience everything the various cultures on the station have to offer.  This requires a large NPC effort and should be split among the senior staff.

3) People the Numati meet begin to exhibit a delusion.  There is one thing, be it important or unimportant, that is false.  But the character believes it to be true.  The extent to which this impacts their interactions with others depends on what that thing is.  The player can decide.

4) Bizarre behavior is noticed, and the Doctors and/or Science officers begin to diagnose it.

5) It is eventually realized that the Numati are the cause.  It is discovered that Numati brain structure is fundamentally different from that of other species.  Their brains process so differently from those of Alpha-Beta species that 'imagination' based thought is confused with 'reality' based thought, and the feedback from their telepathic contact converts passing imagined scenarios in a target mind into factual knowledge in a target mind.  This allows them to accept a false fact as true, and act on that delusion with complete certainty.  The Numati are unaware of this problem, as this is the first Alpha-Beta species they have contacted.

6) The Numati will apologize profusely for infecting the station with delusions.  They will work with the station personnel to discover a cure for the condition.

7) The station personnel discover and administer the cure, and the First Contact ends peacefully after a bumpy beginning.  The Numati promise not to touch Alpha-Beta species until they discover a way to keep from inadvertently causing this problem.  This may put a premature end to any romantic interactions and make the departure sad for some.

Departments: (To make sure everyone has something to do.)

- Flight: In the interests of cultural exchange, some of the Numati will want to experience flight in Federation shuttlecraft, and offer to allow Federation personnel to fly their own shuttles and/or ship.  Also - the delusion plot manifests with all willing personnel.

- Engineering: In the interests of cultural exchange, some of the Numati will want to see the technology of the station, and also offer to demonstrate their own ship's technology to the Engineering personnel.   Also - the delusion plot manifests with all willing personnel.

- Operations: In the interests of cultural exchange, some of the Numati will be interested in how the Federation handles resource management.  They will also be willing to demonstrate their own operational processes to interested Federation personnel.  Also - the delusion plot manifests with all willing personnel.

- Security and tactical:  In the interests of cultural exchange, some of the Numati will want to learn about Federation combat techniques and philosophies.  They will also share their own martial arts and information about their weapon technology.  Also, there may be security issues relating to the delusion.  And Also - the delusion plot manifests with all willing personnel.

- Medical:  In the interests of cultural exchange, some of the Numati will want to learn about Federation medical science.  They will gladly share their own medical knowledge.  Also, the medical department will be central to curing the delusion.  Also - the delusion plot manifests with all willing personnel.

- Science: In the interests of cultural exchange, some of the Numati will want to learn all about various scientific disciplines in the Federation.  They will gladly share all about their own sciences, except for the location of their homeworld.  Science staff may be central to curing the delusion.  Also - the delusion plot manifests with all willing personnel.

Mission Title:Imminent Domain

Synopsis: The Gamma Quadrant nation called the Dosi Confederation sends a heavy cruiser to Katra Station with an envoy who demands that the station be removed and Meridian be handed over to their possession.  Now Katra faces the first major opposition to their presence in the Gamma Quadrant.  Can the disagreement be ended without bloodshed?

Starting Point:The Gamma Quadrant nation called the Dosi Confederation sends a heavy cruiser to Katra Station with an envoy who demands that the station be removed and Meridian be handed over to their possession.

End Goal: Katra successfully defends itself and the Meridian world, but was all of this just a ruse to test Katra's defenses?

Story points that must be passed?:
1) The Dosi envoy arrives aboard a heavy cruiser.  They signal the station and state that the Federation is violating Dosi sovereign territory.  They further indicate the Meridians are also squatting in a Dosi solar system.

2) When the CO of the station naturally challenges these claims, the Dosi will become belligerant.  If offered to come aboard to discuss it with the CO and the Meridian leader, they will do so.

2a) Information - The Dosi are negotiators who believe that aggression is appropriate during negotiations, and an aggressive stance enhances their position.

2b) The Dosi technology is comparable to the Federation of the 23rd century (The Motion Picture Refit Era of the late 2200's.)  However, they have a fleet of several dozen cruisers, and could potentially threaten the station in a serious way if they elected to attack in force.

2c) The Ferengi have historically held trade agreements with the Dosi, something used as an initial inroads into the Gamma Quadrant in the early 2370's.

2d) The Ferengi have a currently disputed interest in the Meridian homeworld, as they hold a contract for stewardship and land management in several large districts of the planet.  Daimon Sorq will demand to be at the proceedings to 'represent his client's interests.'  Whether or not the Station CO allows this is up to them.

3) The Dosi position is that the Meridians abandoned their claim to the solar system by transitioning into another plane of existence.  At that time, the Dosi officially annexed the territory as an element of their imminent domain law allowing their Confederation to seize unoccupied territories adjacent to their own.   The Dosi are aggressive and rude during diplomatic talks, which quickly deteriorate over a period of two days.

4) The Dosi withdraw from negotiations, and Long Range Sensors show three additional Dosi cruisers enroute to the station, accompanied by a Dosi science vessel much further out.  It is possible the Dosi were using the negotiations to give their reinforcement cruisers more time to arrive.  The last thing the Dosi says before withdrawing from the negotiation is, "This talking is pointless.  Matters of territory are always resolved in favor of the party able to use force to secure that territory.  We shall soon know who that party is."

5) The Dosi attack in force, though their science ship stays far out of range.  The attack manages to take down the station shields, and the Dosi board the station.  The Dosi make use of interference devices that cause phasers and disruptors to stop working aboard station, so the station fighting enters melee.  The Dosi attack with heavy bladed weapons resembling oversized, long-handled butcher's cleavers.   The Dosi are clearly practiced warriors, and are relentless combatants who take a severe toll on station personnel.  The Dosi attack indiscriminately, including pursuing any unprotected civilians and children.  The attack becomes almost a terror attack as it progresses.

5a) If the CO of Katra did not eject the Ferengi from these negotiations, then Daimon Sorq will offer to use his Marauder to aid in the defense of the station.  Not out of any altruism, but to 'protect his investment' in the Meridian homeworld.

6) The Dosi are repelled.  As soon as it becomes clear that the Dosi are losing the fight, the Dosi science ship retreats from the area.  Long range sensors show that the science ship has made a transmission in the direction of the New Dominion.  This suggests that the entire claim and attack may have been nothing more than a test of the station's defenses on behalf of the Dominion, and that the Dosi are members of the New Dominion.

Departments: (To make sure everyone has something to do.)

- Flight: Recommend that Flight Control officers take charge of shuttle squadrons to defend the station, or take the helm on the starship assigned to the station in its defense.

- Engineering: There will be damage to repair on the station and on any embarked/assigned craft or starships.

- Operations: There will be many dispatches of damage control teams, transfers of power, initiation of forcefields to segment off station sections from the attackers, and other associated duties.

- Security and tactical:  Not only will there be tactical duties, but the station will be boarded by savage warriors.

- Medical:  Injuries shall abound.  And perhaps even some chances to physically defend their own patients from attack.

- Science: Not only monitoring sensors for activity (and discerning the actions of the out-of-range science ships) but also trying to find a scientific workaround to the Dosi phaser-interference technology, which is preventing security from using energy weapons in defense of the station.  It may be that the station is being overwhelmed until the Science personnel figure out how to get the phasers working again, allowing security teams to regain the upper-hand.
