Messages - Luby Wentock

#16

[Sickbay - USS Discovery]

Luby wondered if she might get permission to go to the Bridge and watch the monitoring of lifesigns for the away crew so she knew what to look for, but she decided that she still needed to learn a bit more on hybrid pregnancies and births so went to find Kestra - being the resident midwife - to pass on some wisdom before her exams in just over a week's time.

She wasn't nervous, just she knew more about some things than others but then all doctors specialised.  She'd gone for Paeds, something her mentor's friend Dr. McGellen had started in then switched to immunology and virology... it had involved a woman in his past and she didn't know the full story but ... she was sticking with Paeds.

Thank you both.

Danjar I love that you are a 6'6" Grazerite with massive horns!

Lek your character looks really interesting too. I feel like he might be a grumpy tinkerer, a bit like a dwarf when I look at the image - is that totally wrong? If so sorry!

Take it from me, Lek is perma-grumpy with smatterings of brilliance, and a soft side which doesn't show very often!!

Welcome from Luby, I hope to interact with you more OUT of the Sickbay than in it!

With ref to a) my latest post as Luby and b) the LOA I have put in for 5 - 18 July OOC, I was kinda hoping to use (for Luby at least) the 'cover' that I'm in exams and therefore excused duty for those 2 weeks so if anyone needs to refer to me during the time I'm not online... that's the reason.  It means no one will be waiting on responses from me.  I hope to come back a fully fledged Ensign, Captain hint hint!! :P

[Shuttlebay 1 - USS Discovery]

T'Lara received her inoculation, then made her way to the shuttlebay and walked in to see Savar already waiting to go, something she appreciated. She nodded to him and clasped her hands as best she could in the suit. After several moments of silence, something she was completely fine with, she decided to break it. She figured it was in her best interest to get to know this man better, though she was slightly offended by his unconventional practices. It was interesting, because at the same time she was intrigued by him. Anything out of the ordinary had an increased potential for exploration, but she did not know if it would be wise for her to invest in it.

"Thank you for completing the soil analysis so promptly." Several more moments passed. "Have you...enjoyed your time serving on Discovery? Where have you served previously?" She didn't know how old he was, but it was possible they had crossed paths without her knowing.

After their chat, she received a comm from Luby.

=/\= "T'Lara to Cadet Wentock. The away team compliment has not changed, however I will send you the list again if you require it. So far Lieutenant Savar and I are the only ones who have arrived. I trust he has received his inoculation, so you should have three remaining. Let me know if this matches with your records. T'Lara out."  =/\=

[Sickbay - USS Discovery]

=/\=Affirmative Commander, thank you and Lt. Savar was the first to be inoculated!  Thank you.  Wentock out.  =/\=  Luby answered promptly smiling then wondered what the day would bring.

It was only a couple of weeks until her exams and as such she was trying to get as much as she could of the jobs which she normally did which weren't scheduled appointments - and indeed some of those that weren't time sensitive (by which she meant inoculations or whatever which had to be done on a particular day at a certain time - those she'd either managed that she was free for the few seconds that it took to do the inoculation or had agreed with the patient that one of the other medics could do it) she'd handed off to Bettina, Kestra, Roger, Grithaw and anyone else who was free during those 2 weeks of exams.

She had to pass, it would validate everything she'd said about pulling the weight of a Lieutenant let alone an Ensign... she was already doing the work, and so she now needed the bit of paper - or these days more a notification in her records - that she was actually a fully fledged medical junior doctor.

Picking up her PADD she ran down the list of regular appointments for the day, nodded decisively and then returned to charging the medical tricorders.

[Sickbay]

Realising that the Away team might have changed, Luby decided to ping Commander T'Lara.  Better to double check than potentially have someone unprotected against something.

=/\=Cadet Wentock to Commander T'Lara, I realise you may be busy but could you please confirm that everyone has had whatever hypos they required, I believe there were some spares left in the medkit I left with you if you've already set off.  I'd just rather that people were safe rather than half dead by the time you get back.  Good Luck out there! =/\=

The Next Morning...

Ensign Danjar-Torra
[USS Discovery - Deck One - Bridge]

Torra who had been so happy and hopeful last night before going to bed, was much less assured now his sleepwalking episode.   Torra had left a message regarding the incident with Luby in hopes that she'd be able to determine if Don needed to see a counselor.

The view on main screen was heart-rending for the Grazerite.  A planet partially torn apart.  With dread, Torra checked her console and ran scans to see what life if any might have been extinguished by this phenomenon.
[Sickbay]

Luby walked into the Sickbay, wielding a mug of coffee in one hand and her PADD in the other, using her thumb to scroll thru messages.  One from Torra stood out.  She opened it and read, frowning slightly.

Reaching Room 3 she put down her mug, scritched Sapphire's head then crossed to the replicator and checked if anything had been made for the cat.  She assumed since she was here and not in Dr. Yo-Na's quarters, that the Doctor had already fed her.  She got a few chunks of chicken breast for the cat in a bowl and a big bowl of water and put it down.

She called through the Sickbay "Dr. Yo-Na??" to see if anyone responded.

"I think he'll be on the away team, Luby."  Kestra said popping her head out of the door of one of the examination rooms wearing an apron and holding cleaning items... obviously this was 'clean everything, we're expecting an invasion' day, or simply they had enough time to do a deep clean.

"Sapphire's in Room 3!" she added.

"I know that's why I was looking for the doc, to see if she'd been fed!" Luby said "I've given her a few bits of chicken...no worries I'm going to sort the hypos and sort the cupboards in there so I can keep an eye on her."

"I'll holler if I need anything."
Kestra finished with a smile and went back to what she was doing.

"Looks like I'm cat-sitting again Sapphy!" the cadet said with a grin.  "Least when we get that collar for you you can follow me around Sickbay if you want.  But for now I'm working in here and I've got to send your Auntie Torra a message."

TO: Ensign Danjar-Addams
FROM: Cadet Wentock
RE: Need a chat?

Regarding your message about Don, I'm not sure if you need a formal counsellor's appointment but I'm more than happy to put my medical hat on rather than just as a friend and see you both at any point, or come to yours informally and you can pick my brains... whatever works for you.

Be advised if Dr. Yo-Na is on the away team I'm stuck cat-sitting so I'll be around the Sickbay today unless someone from Security can pick her up (not literally!  Roger calls her 'Sixteen Stone Sapph'! ) and lock her in the doctor's quarters.

Here for you both as friend and medic.

Regards, Luby.

Ensign Danjar-Torra
[USS Discovery - Deck 1 - Bridge]

With her attention focused mainly on the Captain in the moments after the energy wave, Torra could only hope that Lt. Donaghue managed to find the feline before it got into some serious trouble.   She had been relieved to hear that her 'pet' lab rats had not been made into a meal.   Being turned into some large cat's afternoon snack was no way to thank them for their important role in finding a cure for the Iaba virus.

NPC Crewman Helga Tragnar
[USS Discovery - Deck 2 - Armory doorway]

Helga remained where she was in the doorway, blocking it against entry by the ensign.  But according to the medical officer he wasn't there to access the armory but looking for a cat.   It seemed almost ridiculous - except that Helga had heard about this unusual feline from a few of the other enlisted personnel.   That it escaped its owner and had gone wandering the ship could be considered a security issue.   But not for her and her currently assignment.

According to the regs, Helga was to report Maghouin's unauthorized presence to her supervisor; this could possibly get him into trouble if the higher ups weren't in a charitable mood.   While Helga could understand the reason behind that regulation, in this instance she really had no desire to see the medical officer get in trouble because he was searching for a beloved pet.

"Stay right there." she ordered and then without another word she stepped back into the armory and the door slid shut.   He might possibly think that she was leaving to call her superior, but that wasn't the case.  Helga went to the cabinet where a dozen tricorders were stored.  She picked one up, signed it out under her name with the name Roger Maghouin in brackets beside.  Then returned to the Armory entrance.  After the door slid open she looked out to see if he was still there, while calling out to him.

"This might aid you in your search."  She turned on the unit and did a scan of the area.  No cat... and nothing of any notable danger on the Ensign who was in a restricted area.

She held the tricorder out to him. "Security tricorders are kept at peak maintenance and with that you should be able to get high enough resolution to know if you are even on the correct deck.   I have it signed out under my name, Tragnar, so be careful with it.  Contact me when you manage to find the cat and you need to return the unit.  I'll make arrangements to pick it up."

After he had the tricorder,  Helga smiled toothily.  "Good luck.  Now get out of here before we both get caught breaking the rules."

A little later after he had gone, Helga remembered her messages and checked them.

The half-Klingon security crewman was delighted to see a message from Lek!  But groaned when she read that he wanted to get together at exactly the same time her Chief wanted a sparring match with her."[/color]

Reluctantly she messaged him back:  Will have to take a rain cheque on that barrel of blood wine.  My chief wants to spar at that time.  It's an opportunity I can't afford to back out of.   If you're interested, I could ask if she minds a spectator?  But you might be better spent using that time to catch up on sleep or eating.  Thanks for thinking of me....  Helga.

[USS Discovery - Deck 2 - Armory doorway]

[As NPC Ensign Roger Maghouin]

"Staying... I don't tend to argue with Klingons, especially not armed female ones!" Roger said with a grin.

When she returned with the tricorder and explanation Roger looked surprised, but in a pleased way.

"Oh, well... thanks Crewman... Tragnar you said yes?  Well even if I forgot the name there can't be that many Klingon crewmen on the ship or in Security surely? You're an angel, a lifesaver and... I'll make sure it gets back to you in one piece, I owe you not just one but several favours so... call on me anytime.  Ensign Roger Maghouin or the daft one that snaffles all of Luby's cooking!  Indirectly Doc Yo-yo erm I mean Yo-Na owes you one too as it's his damn cat I'm looking for!"

He gave her a grin and a wink then spun smartly on his heel and almost mockingly said "Leaving restricted area now..." with a nonchalant wave of his free hand and into the Turbolift.

=/\=Maghouin to Donaghue, Security is clear, going to the Cargo Bay... I think Grith is down there but it's a large area and plenty of places for the mad moggy to hide.  =/\=

Cargo Bay

[As Roger and Ensign Grithaw Rag]

"Do we have a 20 on the cat yet?" Roger said spying his fellow medic, which being a Bolian and bright blue, wasn't hard to spot.

"A 20?" Grithaw asked quizzically.

"Old Earthen medic and military-speak.  20/20 meant perfect vision.  So the military used it as short hand for 'Do you have a visual' or 'Do you have eyes on..' whatever object you were looking for."

"That would be a negative then... I haven't had a 20 on the cat and my vision is 20/20 as you say.  Like myself, she is rather hard to miss being blue, however, unlike myself she is rather more inclined to get into boxes and places she's not supposed to!" Grithaw said with a wry smile.

"Lucky for you I bumped into a female Klingon Security angel..."

"An angel? Helga Tragnar?  She's the only female Klingon in Security..."

"...and she's an angel, I won't hear otherwise.  She could have written me up, I was in a restricted area, but she didn't and she loaned me this... out under her name so I don't get in trouble." Roger showed the Security scanner.

"And unless I'm very much mistaken... there's something over there..."  he nodded with his head in the general direction. "...not moving.  So unless we have a crewmember taking an unscheduled nap in the middle of the cargo bay, or someone had a heartattack and died, in which case having 2 medics here is a great idea... I would hazard a guess that is our missing feline!"

The pair walked over and found a very dejected moggy head down on her paws letting out pitiful little mews.

"Do you have a medical tricorder on you Grith? Just to make sure she's not hurt."

"Always. What's wrong girl?  Eh?..." Grithaw ran the tricorder over Sapphire and concluded that there was nothing physically wrong with the cat.

Ensign Maghouin crouched down too and started stroking her head and fussing her ears.  "Missing Dr. Yo-yo aren't you, baby?  How about we get you back up to the Sickbay and I get you some nice chicken breast as a treat,.. you coming?"

Sapphire regarded Roger sadly and after nuzzling his hand gently she put her head down on her paws again and started making little meeping sounds of distress.

"Yep... she's wanting the Doc.  I don't think she's coming willingly so I'm going to have to carry her.  You take this..." he passed over the tricorder. "Drop it at your peril, or I'll feed you to Klingon Security officer with absolutely no regrets!  C'mon baby girl.  Let's take you somewhere more comfy than the Cargo Bay floor hmm?!"

He picked her up like one would carry an injured dog.  "Bloody hell woman, what do you eat!?!  I swear Luby weighs less than you! Oh Grith while we're on the move can you call in the search teams and get them to reconvene in Sickbay, let them and Ensign Danjar-Addams that we've found the cat."

"On it..."

=/\=Ensign Rag to Lt. j.g. Donaghue, Ensigns Kwan and Danjar-Addams and Cadet Wentock.  Sapphire found, repeat the cat has been found.  In the Cargo Bay.  No injuries, and we are currently en route to Sickbay where, like it or not she will be confined to the break room. Rag out. =/\=

[Sickbay]

[As Roger, Grithaw, Lt. j.g. Kestra Donaghue, Ensign Bettina Kwan and Cadet Luby Wentock]

Having got Grithaw's message, the girls had returned from their points of search.

"And I hope you enjoyed your little jaunt Missy..." Kestra said looking at the cat.  "No injuries?"

"Nope, maybe hurt pride at being found!" Roger answered with a grin.  "Let me put her down then I want to check something."

He walked into Room 3, the unofficial break room for the medical staff and put her in the bed they had for her in there.  "And you're to stay there, Miss.  I'm sure Dr. Yoyo will be back soon."

"Yoyo?  Don't you mean Yo-Na or is he getting a nickname like Kestra?!" Bettina asked.

"Well all the best people have nickname.  Kestrel, Rog, Grith, Bet, Lubes, Sapphy... and Dr. Yoyo.  Haven't given Thane one, Dr. Slushy cuz we can't pronounce his name right is a great doc, so's Thane but you don't dare give him a nickname!  Now, Lubes... need you here a second."

Luby walked over and squealed when Roger picked her up. "I was wrong Grith... Lubes is marginally heavier than the cat, but not by much!" he chuckled.

"Next time warn me, I'll put my anti grav suit on!" Luby grinned.

Sapphire let out a plaintive mew, and Roger turned.  "Sorry Your Majesty, I forgot.  Chicken breast coming up and a good bowl of nice fresh cold water.  I think someone is going to have to stay in here with her, she's missing Dr. Yo-Na."

"Well it's my break now so I can." Bettina offered.  "We'll just have to take turns."

"And you have to get this back to your Klingon 'angel'!!" Grithaw teased Roger.

"Indeed..."

Now that he had a free hand he unhooked his PADD and sent a quick message to Helga.

RE: Return of Equipment

Cat located in Cargo Bay, now returned to Medical and restricted to one room, with a chaperone!

Many thanks for the loan of the equipment, we found her very quickly with it.  Please arrange for it to be picked up, I will put it behind the main reception desk in the Sickbay in case our schedules don't match up for it to be returned, anyone from Security may retrieve it from there.

Again my thanks, I owe you a few favours and possibly a keg of bloodwine.

Regards,

Roger Maghouin.

[Lieutenant Nira Said | Bridge | Deck One | USS Discovery NCC-78393-B]

Nira blinked when Lieutenant Donaghue drew herself upright...she must've been two inches, maybe a little more, taller than she was. And with that smile...inwardly, Nira recoiled. It felt worse than if the nurse retorted angrily.

"My apologies, Lieutenant," said Nira gently. "And I wasn't suggesting imprisoning the animal, the fuller security officer in me is somewhat surprised...make that alarmed...I also apologize for overreacting..."

But then she flinched when she described the size of the animal. "Big as a Labrador?" she said in surprise. "That's not a cat, that's practically a li...a lynx!" She was about to say "lion," but then she realized a lion can get a lot bigger than a Labrador. "Then again, good thing it's just a pet," she added apologetically; she wasn't much of a cat person, even more so since she provoked the Caitian officer Commander K'Lizh on the Athena. She was more of a dog person; one of her only childhood friends happened to be a pet dog.

At once, Nira's head was working. If the cat was following its owner's scent, perhaps she can start searching at his last location, and that was the shuttle bay. It was a good start. And Ops with internal sensors will help definitely, to at least confirm where the cat was, with Torra helping...

Turning to the captain, she said, "My apologies for my reactions, Captain. And with your permission, I wish to help Lieutenant Donaghue with this problem."

She felt it'll give her something to do. Plus, she'd be back quickly, this was a search operation that won't likely take long.

[Bridge - USS Discovery]
[As NPC Lt.j.g. (Nurse Practitioner) Kestra Dongahue]

Kestra softened, in reality she hated having to mention her rank but hated more that people dismissed her as 'just a nurse', especially when she was a Nurse Practitioner and thus actually more experienced than Luby.  Also, she knew exactly how Luby felt about wanting to have Academy over with and her Ensign pips, since she was already pulling the work that two Ensigns and two Lt. jg's (herself, Bettina, Roger and Grithaw) were doing, and volunteering for any shift covers needed without question.

"It's fine, Lieutenant.  And the idea of something the size of... yes roughly the size of a lynx, can be alarming.  She on the other hand is only vicious with squeaky toys and food.  Humans she'd roll over and want a belly rub!  She won't attack you I promise.  And no offence to Ensign Danjar-Addams there with her magnificent horns but unlike large wild cats, she wouldn't see her as dinner either.  By the way, Ensign, Cadet Wentock asked me to tell me she'd checked on your rats and they didn't become dinner either!"

Ensign Danjar-Torra
[USS Discovery - Deck 1 - Bridge]

Movement in her direction beside her had her glancing over just as Don looked her way.  Today she noticed a change in the way he looked at her.  She could feel again how much he loved her from the expression on his face.   It brought a smile to her own.  She dipped her head gently before returning her attention to her work.  She was content.

Torra looked over towards the nurse at her inquiry and shook her horned head even as Nira spoke clearly upset at the idea of a free roaming pet on her ship.

"If you like, with the Captain's permission, I can try checking the internal sensors.. see if Sapphire shows up on any of the sensors."  Torra offered quietly, glancing back towards the Captain for said permission to run the check even as calls came in from Grithaw suggesting the exact same thing.  Apparently, the Grazerites quiet offer hadn't been heard by anyone on the bridge other than maybe her husband -  Torra really needed to learn how to speak up - as they continued to discuss issue around her without pause at her offer.

Torra restated her offer, with more volume this time.
"I said...  with the Captain's permission, I can try checking the internal sensors.. see if Sapphire shows up on any of the sensors."

Once permission was granted Torra set to work looking for feline using the ship's internal sensors.   Torra did a scan for all bio signs and then began filtering out those of humanoid nature and focused on feline and felinoid readings.  The ship did have a few Caitian crewmembers so it wasn't a perfect solution.  But comparing the bio readings to the deck listing and the duty roster, Torra was able after a minute or so to come up with two readings that it might possibly been.  One was in the Cargo Bay, the other the Lounge.

"Lieutenant, Torra felt since they were on the bridge it was best to use her friend's rank and not her personal name even though this was not a mission-related task she was requesting "I believe I've narrowed down the search area to the either the Cargo Bay or Lounge.  Could I get your permission to access the security camera feeds for those two areas, please?"

Smiling further, the Nurse Practioner said, "I'd welcome the assistance.  From whatever source.  And both areas seem to be logical, the Cargo Bay as that would be the location I'm imagining the away team, containing her owner, left from.  Lounge would have his scent but also the added lure of more people to give her fuss, treats and so on.  She's a cat who craves a lot of attention.  Mentioning attention, while I have yours Ensign Danjar-Addams... and maybe yours too Lt. Said, I'm not sure if it's either of you I would need to liaise with  or not about this, but I know that the ship's cat on the Challenger has a chip, in this case a sub-dermal one like they used on Earth for ID purposes, as that particular feline had a habit of slipping his collar.  I don't think Sapphire would but I digress and sub-dermal is convenient... but that chip...."

[Deck 1 - Main Bridge - USS Discovery]

The interruption of the nurse walking on the bridge raised an eyebrow, and he turned around, standing up.  A missing animal was the last thing he wanted to deal with.  He looked between the two and sighed.  He had missed the first statement from Torra, but heard the second one.

"Do it." he stated, not looking away from the nurse.  He looked at Nira and then back again, and the look on his face showed that he was not pleased.  At this point, he looked downright intimidating.  "I can assure you there is nothing in my ready room that I have not personally placed there.  Miss Donaghue, while I am not against animals on my ship, I have only one rule; that animal not be loose on board.  And most definitely not in the essential sections of my ship. Find that animal before it gets into something its not supposed to." he stated, looking at both Nira and Kestra.

"...that.  She could be in Medical since she is a therapy cat she could reasonably be expected to be there, any convenient route between Medical and the Lounge, Mess Hall, Holodeck... you know any area she could reasonably be with the doctor or a minder, with some kind of control remote that if, for any reason we had to move her say, the doctor transferred anywhere, she could go to the shuttlebay and the remote passed over to Ops on a new ship for re-programming.  But the chip would mean that she couldn't wander thru anywhere she wasn't supposed to be. It wouldn't hurt her at all, just like an invisible shield for her.  Medical can sort the subdermal part, if one of you can come up with the chip!"

Kestra turned to the Captain and gave a small bow.  "I apologise for the intrusion Captain, I'll conduct my search elsewhere with or..."

Quote from: Tekin Nevir on June 03, 2021, 07:06:46 PM

Sensors on the ship suddenly detected an energy wave incoming, and the Captain turned just to see a much paler light... with bright spots around the planet where subspace was affected.  On the planet, the flash wave raced across the surface harmlessly, but did give the away team a light show over the crater.  Just as soon as it was there, it was gone.

Nevir frowned; the away team hadn't finished their survey, but now they had a similar event happening somewhere else.  One was an accident; two....

=/\= "Discovery to away team; collect your samples and return to the ship.  We are leaving the system soon."  =/\=

"Mr. Adams, plot a course out of the system, and then get ready to set a course for the origin.  Torra, I need that origin as soon as possible."

"...without the assistance of Lt. Said and Ensign Danjar-Addams or reconvene when it's convenient for them to do so.  Many thanks, Sirs."

NPC Crewman Helga Tragnar
[USS Discovery - Deck 2 - Armory]

Helga could hear a voice calling out in the hall, muffled by the security door to the Armory.   Curious and wary, Helga locked down the weapons cabinet she'd been working on, checked that she had her sidearm and then moved towards the door, alert for trouble.   She palmed the door control panel, standing off the side so that as the door slid open, she would not be in the line of any incoming fire.   But there was none.   Stepping into the doorway, Helga noted the medical personnel walking down the hall after from her.

She cleared her throat to draw his attention back towards her.    "This is a restricted area.  What are you doing here?"

[Security - USS Challenger]

[As NPC Ensign Roger Maghouin]

Roger noticed the Klingon crewman and gave a grin and raised his hands in submission and indication that he was unarmed, then moved one in a small wave of greeting.

"Ah there is life down here, and I realise that Crewman, hence why I came no further and called. I come in peace... I'm Ensign Roger Maghouin, I used to be in Security on the Tempest, transferred to Medical in an emergency and never left since it was actually my preferred department.  But as to what I'm doing down here.  Looking for the therapy cat belonging to Dr. Yo-Na.  She's gone walkabout.  Hard to miss normally being bright blue and about so big..."

Roger gestured with his hands to indicate the size of the cat.

"...and no, I'm not joking, she's about the size of a labrador, lynx that sort of size.  Those not busy in Medical who know the cat kinda sub-divided the ship up for the search.  I pity Kestra, she had to go to the Bridge!"

[Main Engineering - USS Discovery]

Lieutenant Giancarlo Gianetti looked at the Bolian with a raised eyebrow and shook his head with a bemused expression.

"A blue cat? Not just your regular tabby, but a blue cat? I'll skip past all the jokes that write themselves and just say no. Have you got any idea how many Jeffries tubes there are on this ship? I suggest you ask Ops to use the internal sensors or you'll be looking for hours, weeks if this cat doesn't want to be found."

[Engineering]

[As NPC Grithaw Rag]

"Ah good plan, Lieutenant.  I was thinking too literally.  You clearly know cat's even if you don't know this one, and you've given me another idea. Thanks!" Grithaw said and smiled.  "I'll get out of your hair, Sir."

[Lieutenant Nira Said | Bridge | Deck One | USS Discovery NCC-78393-B]

Nira was surprised by the entry of a nurse...Nurse Donaghue, the senior nurse, if she remembered...and then she was further surprised by why she was here. Doctor Yo-Na, new doctor...was missing a cat?

"The new doctor's cat is missing?" Nira asked, and then her voice took on a more serious tone. "You think it's on the bridge? Of all places, Nurse? We would've seen it. Hell, I would've seen it. And the fact of the matter is, what the hell would it be doing here in the first place, and on the loose at that?"

Nira stressed emphasis on herself because she, with her observational awareness, would've seen a cat wandering onto the bridge from the turbolift. She often looked at the turbolift doors when they opened to see who came in, mostly with her eyes if she couldn't turn her head. And her last question took on an especially serious tone while she moved her eyes at the Captain. After all, no captain liked having an unexpected intruder on the bridge, least of all an animal on the loose, even if it was a pet. Nira felt absolutely the same thing, especially now that she was Chief Sec/Tac officer; she didn't like the idea of an intruder, let alone a loose animal, pet or no, especially if through some Allah-to-goodness circumstance it ended up on the bridge. No security officer would.

[Bridge]

[As Kestra Donaghue]

Kestra drew herself up to her full 5'8" and smiled her most disarming smile at Nira.

"That's Lt.j.g. Donaghue, Ma'am, and with all due respect, we know her, and just how sneaky Sapphire can be from when she was on Katra Station, and managed to get herself pregnant. Plus she's a therapy cat, she goes where she feels people need help... although more likely she's following a scent, be it food or traces of her owner, or looking for somewhere warm to bunk down.  So we're checking everywhere. She was safely in one of our rooms, and even if we'd closed the door we would have had to security lock it... you're surely not suggesting that we totally imprison the cat?  That's animal cruelty.  However, I admit she's rather hard to miss being bright blue and the size of a Labrador! So had she entered the Bridge someone would have seen her."

Kestra sighed as got the message through from Grithaw.

=/\= Acknowledged Grithaw. =/\=  the senior nurse answered.

"Ma'am... should I take this up with Lt. Leon or Ensign Danjar-Addams?  Apparently Mr. Gianetti suggested doing an internal sweep with the sensors for the cat.  Also I need to see them about getting a chip fitted in her collar for access to certain areas only, with an override that only the Doctor himself or certain personnel... Ops, Security can set to override if the cat is needed somewhere other than her normal places she's allowed to be."

[OOC - The cat is following a scent of the Doctor, looking for her master is all, since he's on the Away team she won't find him but trail will lead to last known place on the ship he was, which I think was the Cargo Bay.  This is just an opportunity for anyone at a loose end to interact with the NPCs and get some posts in.]

Luby was interrupted by Roger looking distracted, running hither and yon, opening cupboard doors, looking under benches and so on.  While it was rather comical to watch, and she did so, rather bemused for a while, she had to admit it was distracting and disturbing the calm of the Sickbay.

"Roger, what are you searching for?" she asked quizzically.

"Sapphire... I went to give her the fat trimmings off my bacon sandwich and... she's gone... somewhere!"

[Sickbay, USS Challenger a few hours later]

After a fruitless search around the Sickbay, between dealing with things she needed to do, Luby still hadn't found the cat, nor had Roger.

"We're gonna need to sort a search team, or the doc's gonna have my guts and when it comes to that cat I rather think his Klingon rather than the Vulcan side is gonna come out!" Luby said with a sad look on her face.

"Lubes, relax, Sapphire's probably just found somewhere warm and cosy to settle down, or followed a smell, some kind of critter or y'know something to play with." Kestra comforted with a smile.

"And not all Klingons are bloodwine-crazed, bat'leth wielding maniacs!" Bettina giggled.

"No he'll just put something lethal into a hypo and..." Roger teased.

"Roger, terrorising the poor soon-to-be-Ensign won't help find the cat." Grithaw said appearing around the corner.  "There's four of us, how about taking by department and we'll figure something out, warn members of those departments to look out for her and trap then call us - by trap I mean put in a side room until we can get there."

"Good plan,.." the senior nurse, Kestra said with a decisive nod.  "We've already looked everywhere we can in here so Medical can be crossed off, and we have enough people here to cover while we search elsewhere.  Roger, you know Security well enough you go down there.  Grith... you can take Engineering and Ops, I'll take the Bridge, Luby - Sciences, please.  Bettina you the Mess Hall.  Once you're done in Security Roge, head down to the Shuttlebays and Cargo Bay...make sure she hasn't hunkered down in any of our shuttles."

"Who died and made her Queen?" Roger asked with a grin.  "OK OK, Yes Your Majesty, I hear and obey.  Might I suggest we keep in comm contact to liaise."

"Sure, Roger, and we'll all meet back in Room 3 unless otherwise we find her elsewhere in the meantime, in... 2 hours?"

"Deal!" came the refrain from everyone present.

[Bridge]

Kestra Donaghue

"Forgive the intrustion, sirs..." Kestra said "We're looking for Dr. Yo-Na's cat."

The nurse looked around and smiled.  "She doesn't appear to be in here unless she's sneaked into the Captain's Ready Room."

Grithaw Rag

"I'm sorry to intrude..." the Bolian said walking up to Lek and Wynters.  "Have either of you seen a large blue cat.  And I assure you I'm not hallucinating, Dr. Yo-Na has a large blue cat!"

Roger Maghouin

"Uh, anyone seen a damn cat?" Roger called out looking in all the places that he knew she could be.

Bettina Kwan

Bettina walked into the Mess Hall and started looking under tables.  To anyone that saw her it would look like she was getting into character for a homeless guy in a 20th century movie, set somewhere around Central Park, New York... looking in the trash cans and under park benches for anything useful or edible.

[Luby]

Luby went straight to the cages for Torra's rats to check on them, thankfully they were all there and hadn't become feline snacks.  She gave them a few treats and bits of fruit then continued her search for Sapphire.

"Where are you, daft moggy?  Come out, come out wherever you are this game of hide and seek has lasted long enough!"

[Lieutenant Nira Said | Bridge | Deck One | USS Discovery NCC-78393-B]

Then she thought for a moment on what departmental matter to look into. And she thought of at least two. She sent out two texts, one to Cadet Wentlock, the other to Crewman Tragnar.

To Cadet Wentlock,

I'm sending this in regards to checking on the condition of Petty Officer Strider. How is he so far?

She distinctly recalled that Cadet Wentlock was the medical officer - if a medical cadet could at least count as a medical officer, practically the most junior of officers - on duty when the petty officer called in sick. Then she sent her message to Crewman Tragnar.

[Sickbay - USS Challenger]

Luby was doing her rounds, assuming that Sapphire would follow her as she did the doctor, but the cat decided to hunker down in Room 3 under the bench and go to sleep.  Figuring that she was safe there, but making sure the door was propped open so the cat could get to water and a litter tray, she continued working.

It was no surprise when the message came from Nira enquiring about Brad Strider, poor chap had come in feeling like death at the start of the shift, and she'd diagnosed the remnants of a migraine, administered medication and told him to sleep it off.  She was at this point going to the replicator to get a mug of hot, sweetened Yorkshire tea and some buttered toast which was always her parents favourite 'cure' after the medication when she'd had them going through puberty.

TO: Lt. Said, Security Dept.
FROM: Cadet Wentock, Medical Dept.
RE: PO2 Strider

Mr. Strider was suffering a rather bad migraine, given medication and told to sleep.  He's now starting to sit up and I'll be administering the 2nd half of treatment - a mug of tea and some hot buttered toast.

Provided he keeps that down, I recommend that he take the rest of the day off to rest, but he should be fine for his next duty shift and/or if there were any emergency.  He might be a bit ropey but if it were an 'all hands on deck' situation he could manage.

Regards, Luby

~END MESSAGE~

She set that off and crossed to the replicator for the tea and toast then took it over to Bradley Strider.

"So, Mr. Strider, I trust you're feeling better now.  Get this down you and I'm sure you'll start feeling a bit more human too.  I suffer myself now and then, although not the way I did as a teenager!"

Luby was interrupted by Roger looking distracted, running hither and yon, opening cupboard doors, looking under benches and so on.  While it was rather comical to watch, and she did so, rather bemused for a while, she had to admit it was distracting and disturbing the calm of the Sickbay.

=/\= "Ta Li Yo-na to away  team I have finished with my very difficult and talkative patient and I will be along shortly"  =/\=

The Dr took a few deep breaths looked at his blue sidekick and said "I have to go from a while but if you want some company I'm sure the Cadet will be happy to see you"

Then he made his way out of Sickbay

[Sickbay]

Luby heard the voice of the doctor and smiled hearing her title, so, since she was finished with Lt. Savar she checked the logs and saw who Dr. Yo-Na was with and replicated some tea.

"Hello Marsha, why don't you and Sapphire come with me and we can go raid the cookie jar to eat with this cup of tea."

She gave the doctor a significant look of 'I'll take over here for you...'

"Your anti-radiation inoculation is on the tray there doctor, don't forget it as I don't want to have to treat you for that when you get back.  Good luck, I think Commander T'Lara is expecting you down there like, yesterday!"

She steered Marsha Brennan into Room 3 and sat her down, passing Sapphire a treat and scritching the cat's ears muttering "Good girl, I think we'll have to give you an official title of 'Nurse' Sapphire cuz you're so good at looking after people and will take your wages in nuggets of ham!"

[Shuttlebay 1 - USS Discovery]

T'Lara went to Sickbay for the inoculation, gathered her supplies, and acquired an EV suit. Now she was in the shuttlebay and two of her team had arrived so far. They were just waiting for Ta Li. She'd give him five more minutes, but after that she would request Luby. She did not approve of tardiness, and did not take excuses. They needed a medical officer, so his presence was of the utmost importance. She gave a nod to Savar when he entered, then engaged in conversation with Gohun.

"There is a tangible amount of risk involved, Crewman. If we are unable to transport back and find and immediate need to leave, we should be able to seek shelter in the shuttle and make a return trip to the Discovery. Upon the event of our time spent planetside being extended, we also have a medical officer to administer more anti-radiation inoculations if needed. If phasers are inoperable..." she gave him a questioning look. "As a security crewman, you should be the one answering that question."

Of course she had her own answer to the question, but she saw this as a teaching moment. When he answered her question she looked around and belatedly realized that there was no alpha shift flight officer present. This should not have been the case, as there was always supposed to be someone on duty in the bays at all times, so she gave a short frown and took out her PADD to make a note of this in her scheduling notes. She then sent a message to an officer she knew was available.

=/\= "T'Lara to Petty Officer Graham. You have been selected for an away team assignment. Report to sickbay for inoculation, then arrive at Shuttlebay one equipped with an EV suit and standard weapons for a briefing before departure. T'Lara out."   =/\=

[As NPC Lt JG (Nurse Practioner) Kestra Donaghue]

"Apologies, Dr. Yona is rather tied up at the moment, he hoped to be down in time and if he makes it before the shuttlecraft departs... he still will be part of the away team." Kestra said running in breathlessly.

"In the meantime, you've got me.  Has everyone had their inoculations, I brought spares in case!"

[Lieutenant JG Savar | Sickbay | Deck Nine | USS Discovery NCC-78393-B]

Savar had to raise an eyebrow at Luby's reply. Aside from the fact that Luby talks as much as Nira does, if not more (given the limits to Nira's telepathy), it seemed to him that Luby was the least affected of the aftermath of the T'hunga mind control. It's so ironic that Luby seemed to be working just as hard as Nira is, and Nira was working in a way to focus away from memories. Then again, Luby had a human brain, while Nira was a Betazoid with an eidetic memory.

"Interesting," said Savar. "Oh, it's not bothering Nira, at least not right now, but it used to bother her. That was before I helped her out using a Vulcan technique last night. However, I believe Don Addams is having just as much that problem, and he's human as well. I've seen him lately, and even I can see something's wrong. And I'm not sure how the Captain is with this, or how he deals with it."

Savar nodded at Luby's appraisal and bidding good luck and replied, "Thank you, Nurse." He then departed to pick up an EV suit, then to meet Commander T'Lara at the shuttle bay.

[Sickbay]

"It's Cadet, actually... or least until the results come in from the exams I sit next week and I'll have passed hopefully...won't know that until mid-August though!" Luby said with a grin.  She didn't like correcting the guy, but too many people took her as 'just a nurse'... would that be the same when she'd actually passed her Academy exams and became a full Ensign, and earned the right to the title 'Doctor'?

"As for Lt. Addams, I'll see if I can have a word just as a friend, as we did connect quite well on the mission, he looked after me, seemed to take some kind of gentlemanly responsibility I suppose is the best way to put it, and I'm good friends with his wife, so even just informally chatting over a cuppa in the lounge might shed some light and see if we should investigate further or if he just needs some time to process it more.  Good Luck out there, Sir."

[Lieutenant JG Savar | Sickbay | Deck Nine | USS Discovery NCC-78393-B]

"Oh, you mean the carotid?" asked Savar with amusement. "Carotid, please..." he leaned in close to Luby for a whisper, "It's a spot Nira likes to press her lips on when she and I are alone and in the right situation."

Naturally, he'd know what the carotid is; every science officer had at least one medical class to attend at the Academy. Plus, Luby was another friend of Nira's, particularly in Paradise 1899.

He winked, leaned back, and added, "How have you been, Nurse? Particularly since returning from the past? Anything bothering you, particularly memories that you technically haven't lived? Such memories were bothering Nira until recently."

[Sickbay]

"Carotid... Sorry I was conflating a few things there, been doing my revision for my final exams at  Academy.  I'm hoping if I wrote 'cartoid' they'd assume it was a typo!"

Luby quickly pressed they hypospray to the Vulcan officer's neck and pressed the button to administer it with a quick hiss.

"There, it's that quick.  As for the neck...I can imagine that would be enjoyable, it's an erogenous zone, lots of nerve endings!  As for troubling memories, not really, I think I've managed to detach from that because I had to focus my mind directly and apply it to the revision..." she recycled the empty spray cartridge and looked at Savar and smiled.

"I'm not sure if that's just because I've only got a human brain but I find if you occupy it with enough data that it's processing, rather than stuff that it can store, rather like a computer - too many processes open at once and it will overload the system.  I don't want to do that, or slow myself down so I have managed to fill the 'data-handling capabilities' with revision and standard duty.  That said, I was rather intrigued by the idea that my mind seemed to fixate on this one young girl...I'm now trying to figure out if it was pure coincidence that she looked like someone in an old Earthen tv show I've watched as holo archives or if it was my brain framing the experience to something I could follow... you know like if Nira suddenly grew two head, your brain would throw all kinds of logical explanations to cover the experience... that's not a good example. In Christian ideology there are things called angels, messengers from God.  Mankind have by and large always depicted them with wings.  Why?  Well, humans were told that God lives in heaven, and since when the whole idea of this was put to them, no one had explored space, they presumed that 'Heaven' was some kingdom in the sky.  If angels are or were messengers from God, who lived in the sky, then they didn't just 'appear'... they had just kinda got their heads around the fact that there was a God living in the sky, sudden appearances of other people who lived there would have been a thought too strange to comprehend... so how... aha... WINGS!!! Birds travel through the air, they use wings, so Angels suddenly got wings...because the human brain could handle that!.

So was my brain doing something similar and saying 'There you go, you are in a traumatic situation, here's something familiar, oh right you understand now!' "

Luby sighed.  "It hasn't bothered me over much because I simply haven't had the time to think about it.  If it's bothering Nira you can bring her down and I can chat to her about it, I can imagine that she might not want to talk to the counsellor about it, but a friend who was there and understands first hand what it was like... over coffee or whatever, you can come too if you like, to support her.  Or just kiss her neck more, I know from my own experiences you tend to forget most things when that happens!" she grinned and returned the wink.

"All done, Lieutenant.  I wish the rest would be as prompt as yourself!  I imagine Dr. Yona might have done his own, but I'll check the logs once the rest have been down and make sure everyone is inoculated.  Good luck out there, Sir!"

[Sickbay - USS Challenger]

Luby sighed.  She didn't particularly want to go on another away mission right now given the last one, and she was more than glad that for the most part, folks were tending not to get themselves injured at the moment so her day consisted of administering basic first aid fixing cuts, doling out analgesics for minor aches and pains and doing routine physicals... she was bored.

There was only so much learning she could do from books too, she would be glad, in a way, next week when she sat her exams online.

Squaring her shoulders and deciding to make the best of it, she decided to tackle the 'junk' cupboard that everyone avoided... never knew what sort of treasures one might find in there, while mildly envying Dr. Yona going on the away team for the medical experiences!  Although she knew they'd be coming in for their radiation shots soon so she got them prepared and lined up.

[Lieutenant JG Savar | Nira's Forensic Lab >- Sickbay | Deck Ten >- Deck Nine | USS Discovery NCC-78393-B]

The moment the call roused him from his duties, Savar was rapt with attention. Inoculation, check. Equipment: standard weapons and department-specific tricorders. Good thing he left some of his work materials in Nira's forensics lab; in fact, some of Nira's equipment were science-specific anyway. That's why Nira regarded herself as Forensic Science Officer.

Finally, EV suit. That meant there was a need to go somewhere hazardous, if not into the vacuum of space.

Savar picked up Nira's trusty forensics kit, which basically consisted of science-specific equipment anyway, though he aimed to be careful with it, then headed for Sickbay for the required inoculation.

He arrived just as Nurse Wentlock was...was she flirting with an engineering crewman...? Made sense, she's technically still a cadet, but he and Nira always regarded Luby as a nurse anyway.

"Excuse me, nurse," said Savar. "Are your or Doctor Ta Li Yo-Na available? I'm to receive an inoculation for radiation. For an away mission, that is."

Luby smiled, picked up a hypo from the tray she'd prepared and waved it merrily.

"You're the first, Lt. Savar, I have them all ready for you.  I heard the call for Dr. Yona to join the away team and report to Sickbay for inoculations.  I figured he'd be busy prepping for that, so I prepped the jabs.  Cartoid or arm for you, Sir?"
