Messages - James Ramort

She motioned for James to come closer, "Ensign Ramort, meet Lieutenant Commander Garrison, head brain around here."

[USS Discovery - Science Lab]

After entering James looked around, trying not to make his curiosity too obvious. The equipment around him he was familiar with. Consoles and instruments designed to be used to find traces the faintest elements, accessing the ships sensors and covered ports hiding away interfaces capable of augmenting the lab with whatever additional instruments might be needed for any given situation.

He was of course familiar with these kinds of labs, they had often been the location for hundreds of hours of practical training for his class.
All of this made the strange thing standing in the corner of the room all the more mysterious. It was covered in markings nearly as if something large has used it to sharpen its claws.
Determined to not let his uneasieness about this shine through he let his academy drilling kick back in and promptly stood at attention, his eyes focusef on his new superior.

"Ensign James Ramort reporting as ordered. Seeking Permission to assume my station onboard Discovery."

Afrer finishing the words the instructors had hammered into him he remained standing still, waiting to be released again but in his eyes already glimmed a spark of his eagerness to just jump to the next console and explore all the labs abilities for the next couple hours.

Tanner laughed, loudly, at his comment, "No. No, we will make sure you have a bed." As they walked she explained, "We have crew quarters on deck ten, which is the same deck as the science labs."

They walked through the doors of the shuttle bay and she pointed to a computer on the wall, "Which is also the same deck as the bay we just landed in." Tanner grinned, "Come on." Walking down the corridor she continued, "Your roommate is on shift right now, but they work in medical which is always handy. They just arrived a few months ago, so you're both able to be new-ish together."

"If you get turned around, don't hesitate to ask the computer for help. It's easy to get turned around with the layout but soon you'll be able to navigate without issue." Tanner stopped before a door, "Here you are. You're programmed in so you can lock it, but remember your roommate can unlock it. So...be sure to communicate if you have any guests over. Security hates being called for such things."

Stepping to the side she moved her arms behind her back, "Go drop your luggage. I'll wait here. We'll head to the science lab after."

[USS Discovery - Deck 10 - Assigned Quarters 25]

News of his own bed, that was a great relief, he had worked hard to leave that one nickname behind him, the one he earned after falling asleep on one of that old manual consoles, hopefully it now was truly forgotten.

He walked into the relatively small room, it wasn't much, but it would be his, or at least part of it, which still felt great!
He dropped his small luggage on the one bunk that was still unclaimed and looked around in hopes of gathering some information about his roommate. At least it seemed he was tidying up the room, which also meant there wasn't much to look at and it was hardly a great introduction to your future roommate if you started to pry through their tucked away personal belonging, even less so with a superior officer standing right in front of the door. A Security officer at that too.
He would have to wait till he finished his shift to get to know his new roommate after all, it seemed.

Another quick look through the room revealed it was equipped with all the most basic necessities. Importantly it also featured a Replicator. He would have to use that as soon as he would get some time to properly settle in.

Stepping back through the Door, outside he posed a question to his guide:

"I can hardly imagine it is pleasant to have to barge in other people quarters. But maybe thats securities equal to us Science Folks scanning through Data. While at the topic, you mentioned the labs are around here somewhere too?"

Giving him a moment to eye up the shuttle space, Tanner cleared her throat and interrupted, "Alright Ensign, let's go." She stood up, "Thanks for the lift, Miller. It's always good to see you."

The pilot offered a nod to them both, "Enjoy the tour," He said, addressing James,"Don't believe everything the Lieutenant says." He pressed a few buttons on the console to power down the shuttle completely. With a hiss, the hatch at the back opened, allowing the noise of the shuttle bay to invade their little space.

"First stop, your bed. Second stop, science labs," Tanner grinned, "And they're on the same floor. Lucky you." Walking down the ramp she turned and looked at him, "Third, lunch?"

James nodded towards Miller in response both to his warning and also as a sign of appreciation for making the effort to bring him to the ship with such an amazing experience.

He then took a second to look all through the Shuttle Bay. It seemed even bigger than he had imagined and filled to the brim with stacks of equipment, shuttle craft, all and each tugged away and ordered nicely according to regulation, and brimming with the many Officers and Crewman ensuring its smooth operation. The bright light on the ceiling painting the entire scene in harsh light, allowing no shadows to be cast, thus creating a strange sense of solar illumination even if not mimicking it at all. A small flying island of light in a vast ocean of empty and dark space.

Focusing back on the Lieutenant he joyfully answered:

"Lunch sounds great but I really hope you didn't mean to imply I will be sleeping in the labs for the foreseeable future. Too many nights studying for the Academy Exams really taught me to appreciate a real bed instead of a console from time to time."

He followed her out of the Shuttlebay into the corridors of Discovery.

Miller leaned back, "Just took the scenic route before going up. Up we go." He looked at James and motioned for him to take the empty seat, "Come on. You're heading to your first ship, come get a good view of her. She's docked, but we'll make sure to do a fly by."

He didn't have to ask twice. Happily taking up the offer James switched into the seat next to the pilot. Besides housing the secondary console for navigating the shuttle (he obviously had to take basic piloting lessons on the academy but sitting behind a real helm was always another feeling) it also offered a wide view through the primary viewscreen and the polarized windows. Just outside the shuttle some faint lights indicated a line of small beacons indicating the primary flight corridor from Starfleet Headquarters to the Main Ship Docking and Supply Area. An Area of space that housed many Vessles of various shapes and sizes. From small runabouts to large Transporters and Ships designed for Exploration and Combat. Smaller lights gave away the location of
Engineers in Spacesuits flying from one metal behemoth to another, even smaller colorful ones hinted at remote drones carrying Supplies from Spacedock to Shuttlebays and Airlocks. Finally there were other shuttles currently in line behind them, also following the beacons before ultimatly they would split off between the ships and unload the Officers and Crewman on board of their new Assignments, such as was happening right now to one Ensign James Ramort.

Among the one immediately stood out to James, it was a Vessel he had studied intensely over the last weeks. Now it finally was there before him. Giant and Majestic. Its quad Nacelles tightly connected   to its primary Hull. Its profile as streamlined as warp theory allowed them to achieve, clearly proving to any onlooker how far it had evolved from earlier decades, strangely though in this development more closely resembling again legendary Ships like the Phoenix or the NX-01, maybe the Warp theorists of old already were on the right track and it only took a slight detour for the Federation Corps of Engineers to once again bring the propulsion systems as close to the Main Hull as now was standard for modernly build craft.
The Main and Navigational Deflectors already glowing in a vibrant blue, the ship prepared to take off into the Galaxy and the Crowning Jewel atop every Federation Ship. The giant letters right beneath the Main Bridge, illuminated by spotlights of their own, USS DISCOVERY NCC 78393-A.

Miller hadn't promised too much when he said they would take the scenic route. After a flow approach from atop the Upper Hull, allowing for a full view of the entire ship, they slowly descended across the Navigational Deflector, leaving the ship identifiers behind them but getting ever closer to the Hull until the shuttle suddenly performed a roll turning the whole world upside down. The Ship now seemed to be hung across the horizon of the viewscreen, an impossible landscape of armoured plating, sensors
and the primary Phaser Banks. This view lasted only a short time until they reached the apex of the ship, its frontmost tip, at which point they rolled again, this time simply following Discoveries own flow, keeping the Hull hanging across their point of view as if it were the dominant feature of the entire solar system.
On this, the middle Hull Section Windows made themselves known, some lit allowing quick peaks into labs and lounges, tiny shapes behind them barely identifiable with their extreme backlighting but most humanoid with some notable exceptions where water seemed to dance across the ports.

When they came to the Lower Hull the Shuttle suddenly increased in Speed and turned towards the Nacelles bathing the Shuttle in their famous Hue of blue, somewhere between the sky on a sunny day and an impossible shade of bleached out Lapis Lazuli. Their short sprint came to an abrupt end at the End of the Nacelle, with the Shuttle performing yet another turn now turning inwards. The 4 Nacelles now shaping up as walls shielding the small craft as if in a loving embrace. The stars now only visible at the utmost low and highest parts of their field of view. Finally now a voice came over comms.
=/\= "Incoming Shuttle, you are cleared for landing in the Shuttlebay. Welcome to Discovery!=/\=

James let out a breath he hadn't even noticed he had been holding up for the last few minutes at least it seemed.

"Well, your soon to be everyday will be a lot of science...stuff," Tanner laughed, "You'll be working mostly with medical and engineering and I assume most of your day will be staring at scans and long streams of data."

Sure, science handled more than that and Tanner knew it wasn't as boring as it always seemed when listening to Savannah talk about her but in this case, it was fun to make it sound monotonous.

Knowing that's not what he wanted to hear so she gave him a lil more, "Okay so, the mission we just came from. Found an abandoned old ship, pretty standard but once aboard we found it haunted with holographs and dead bodies." Leaning forward, "The whole crew had died, leaving only the EMH behind. While we were investigating, our own ship began growing ill...."

Tanner shrugged, "But I'm not dead, so obviously we figured it out. I kept the EMH from the ship though. I figured he deserved a little bit of program use after being out of it for so long.I may be security, but I am a bit of a softie."

He was prepared for this kind of banter, in fact he had been subject to it quite a few times on the academy. Who in their right mind would like the courses after all that focused on all the subjects that required investigating phenomena so niche that even a Starfleet Officer, an occupation with the reputation to have the potential to meet gods of old or finding entire civilizations hidden in between subspacefolds the size of photons, could ever hope to face it. But there was always that slim possibility, it was the reason he had joined the Fleet, the chance to meet the impossible out in the dark. But even he had to admit that manually scanning sensor data was not the most engaging task that he would have to carry out.

"Ahh yes, they beauty of sensor readings. Don't you also think they are the most gorgeous thing there is?"

A slight smile formed on his face before addressing the far more curious part of her statement.

"Also, did you just say you kept an EMH, is that even legal?"

While they talked slowly the hues of the surrounding atmosphere began to fade until the faint stars forming an eternal dome over earth became visible with the naked eye.

"Once you get used to staying up, coming down is a bit of an adjustment," She motioned for him to step into the shuttle and then followed, "And large..." Tanner smirked, "Never call a lady like Discovery large. She's a good size, not the biggest in the fleet but she'll make a comfortable home for your first ship. I'll let you judge for yourself whether she's like the holos."

"Nothing is ever like the holos,"Miller called from his seat,"No matter how real they make it."

Tanner had to agree, despite the fact she spent an obscene amount of time on the Holodeck. Whenever she could get near a forest or a wood, she had to spend time in it.

"But it's close." She countered, "The ship itself is one thing. The situations we get into...." A laugh followed, "That's where we differ from the holos most. We get to see things that in a few years people will replay in holodecks for fun."

The hatch to the shuttle closed and after a brief moment it lifted off into the sky.

Tanner leaned against the back of the seat, "Relax Ramort." She said, "Tell me about your field. Why'd you pick it?"

His little faux pas once again pushed a slight blush on his face but he quickly tried to downplay it.

"I always wanted to get out there. My family always had that itch to get away from Sol and I practically grew up on the stories about Voyager. I must have read the reports about it and its crew a million times when I was little. After that we moved to the colonies so I guess sitting around on comfortable old earth never really was an option for me when there are so many unknowns out there to discover. Not that I particularly wish to get stranded in the Delta Quadrant too..

A slight smile and even a hint of laughter stealing its way onto his face.

"And what better way to be the first to get hands on than joining up with the Science Department."

While speaking, he curious tried to catch a glance at the Shuttles instruments, particularly the indicator for atmospheric pressure and local gravitational pull as they would be the first to drop when they made their way out of earths gravity well and past the atmosphere hiding all the Ships, Satellites and Stations in Orbits from view.

"You mentioned situations the ship gets in, most mission debriefs don't really make it to the academy. Would you mind giving me some insights into my soon to be everyday?"

Tanner laughed, "Chill." She said with a large grin, "You're fine. I just feel excessive now since I brought three suitcases on my first assignment. The last Ensign I nabbed had a birdcage, which had somehow been vetted." She pointed to his simple suitcase, "Take it as a sign that you're far more adjusted than I am."

"Hey Lachlyn," Lieutenant Miller joined the conversation as he appeared from around the other side of the shuttle, "I'm ready if you two are." He closed off a list on the PADD in his hand and gave James a nod.

"You ready?" Tanner asked him, "Once we get to Disco, I've got a tour lined up for you as well as drinks with some of your new shipmates."

Her comments on his luggage made him instantly feel better. Maybe he didn't fail on his first day after all already.

"I am ready. Honestly I have been waiting to finally get spaceborn for the last couple of weeks. We went on training exercises but it just isn't the same as going up and staying up too. I have heard many great things about Discovery. Does she look as large as the holo models make her out to be?"

With his nerves calming down finally his curiosity begins to grab its hold of him again. Fuelled by many years of study at the academy and even before than.
Still holding his small case in his right hand he turned to the shuttle, waiting to allow the pilot to board first.

"Lieutenant Lachlyn," She said with an appropriate nod. At least for now, she had to remember that she was the higher rank and needed to behave. She pointed to his luggage, "Is that all your luggage, Ensign?" Her brow furrowed curiously, "Planning on replicating items once on board?"

Her comment made him a bit uneasy, was he meant to bring more, had he forgotten something. Should he have brought his transfer orders on a PADD with him to verifiy he was supposed to be here?
He really didn't want to get into trouble on his first day. And all of that in front of a security officer. What if she decided to send him straight back to the Academy... No he had to keep his thoughts in order. No internal reassurance could prevent his body from falling into a mild panic though. Adrenalin filled him causing a slight blush to be visible on his face.

"Yes Ma'am. I hoped to replicate the essentials once I got on board. The Instructors told us we should take as little as possible for our first posting. I hope that will work..."
His Voice also portrayed something of his nervousness he wasn't able to hide but he tried to anyway. Maybe compensating it with standing even straighter would work.

The shuttle to take them up into space was prepped and he had orders to meet her at it by 1400 hours. Which, was in fifteen minutes. Tanner waved to the guard and made a beeline for the craft. To her surprise, someone was already waiting and it wasn't the pilot.

"Ensign Ramort?" Tanner said cautiously as she approached. He was wearing the right colored uniform but the last three Ensign's she'd picked up had been late.

[Landing Pad 3 - Earth]

James Ramort stood before the shuttle. His new Uniform still feeling somewhat alien while also filling him with a continuing sense of joy. He had worked a long time to earn it and was brimming with joyful excitement for his first assignment. Finally he would get to see the labs on his first true ship, get to see his accommodations for the foreseeable future. While at the topic, had he packed everything. One last uneasy glance at the case in his had quickly put those thoughts to rest. He wouldn't need much but he had taken a precious few things. A picture with his family and a rock collected from his families garden. Both mementos meant to offer him mental support should he ever need it. Not that he thought he would need it but can you ever be too sure.

Upon hearing the questioning voice directed at him he turned to the Officer approaching him, he wasn't sure who would take him onboard but the moment was to precious to let it be overrolled by wasting time.
" Yes.. thats me .. I mean, yes Lieutenant, reporting as ordered!"

Character Species: Human
Gender: Male
Character Family:
- Mother: Lisa Ramort; Originally from New Berlin, works as a Technician
- Father: Mark Ramort; works as a Biologist
- Brother: Dresa Ramort; 16
Character Bio: James grew up with some of the Federation's greatest crises up to that point hitting it. When the War with the Dominion broke out his Parents relocated to New Berlin to stay closer to their expanded Family in the Earth's Orbit. This ensured their unharmed survival when the Breen attacked the Sol System. Left under this impression his parents turned their eyes towards the outer stars, further away from the potential targets in the Federations primary sectors. From this longing, impressing on James from his earliest Childhood on, grew a fascination for the unknown. When Voyager returned and in one piece the jubilation was endless in the Federation and stories from its journeys in the Delta Quadrant made their way to the People in the Lunar Colonies too. In the young James they only furthered his longing for the unknown Depths of Space. When, in his school years, he visited the fleet museum this longing took the form of the wish to join Starfleet himself one day. From that day on he worked to join Starfleet eagerly. Even when his parents decided to move to Cetus III in the late 2380s, he continued his training, taking every opportunity to sneak onboard federation shuttles and asking Officers as many questions as possible. When finally becoming an adult, he moved back to his extended Family in New Berlin to be as close as possible to Starfleet Headquarters and prepare for the Academy entrance exams. Although his parents were not initially happy with his choice they eventually accepted, seeing that the federation had evolved and even if Starfleet isn't safe they did not wish to be standing in James' way. He regularly holds contact with his younger brother Rick, who is still with their parents on Cerberus.

When joining the Academy, it was a real culture shock for him. Life in the colonies on the outer fringes of Federation Space, even if he sought out Travelers from other worlds as often as possible, the sheer reality of the Academy hit James unexpectedly. It took him some time to adjust. Eventually he succeeded in adapting with the help of one of his tutors. Lt. Com. Tulda, his teacher for Federation Cultural Theory, who could relate to life in the colonies the best. Eventually he finished 3rd of his class and now awaits assignment to his first posting.

[New Berlin - Library]
It was still quiet in the small room bordering the reading hall and the hall filled with the actual physical books. The small room contained no books or means to read them though. It was dominated by data terminals and special PADDs directly linked into the Academies database. The only dim light originated from the terminal in the corner where a lone human was still studying. Deeply buried under PADDs filled with notes and preparatory material James Ramort was busy with studying for the Entrance Exam.

"Computer please display the Stellar Charts of the Sol System again", stellar mechanics being the topics he still had the most studying to do for. It wouldn't matter if he had to continue to stare at these maps and charts till the sun rose on the Luna surface again. In only 16 Hours he would have to take the exam and there was no force in the world that could persist standing between him achieving his dreams to join the exploration of the depths of the Universe.
