[Kartos Family Quarters | Deck 7 | USS Challenger]
Jalen had been on board less than 24 hours and was still unpacking. Thankfully after he had checked in at sickbay he was given a couple days off to settle his family in. So at the moment he was unpacking with his longsuffering husband and was putting out some of the antiquities that they had both acquired over the course of their lives when his combadge chirped at him. Jalen tapped it and listened

=/\= Acknowledged, I'll get on it presently. Kartos out =/\=

Jalen turned to his husband who had a quizzical look on his face, Jalen went out to Lorian and kissed him tenderly on the cheek.

"œI know my dearest one, I am supposed to have a couple days to settle in. But it seems that one of the Forever Children is playing Foolies on the Grups again. As an expert in their eccentricities, it seems that only I can playout this particular role. I'll be as quick as I can." Lorian nodded and smiled back.

"œThat is why we came here after all. Run along and play with the Forever Kids"¦ why not take Leran with you, from what I remember you telling us he might really enjoy hanging out with these Onlies." Lorain offered, more just to get some alone time of his own without their son underfoot. Jalen paused and thought for a moment, he knew better then most how some of the Foolies could get violent, but he figured this was just a hide and find Foolie, so this shouldn't be too dangerous. So he nodded and called out for his adopted son, who came padding softly out from his bedroom.

"œYes Papa?" The boy's soft soprano said as he came into the room.

"œWould you like to come with Papa and help me with my work? It seems that one of the Onlies, you remember them the Forever Children?" The boy nodded and Jalen continued, "œWell he didn't show up at an appointment today, so he is likely playing a Hide and Find Foolie, so I thought maybe you'd want to help me find him."

The boy thought a moment, he had always been interested when his Papa had talked about the Forever Kids and nodded his head vigorously. Jalen smiled and held out his hand only to have his adopted son run forward and jump up on to Jalen's solidly built 6'3" frame. The boy was light for his age and Jalen had no problem holding the boy in his arms. He then turned back to his husband and smiled broadly.

"œWe'll be back as soon as we find the wayward Only." Then both Jalen and Leran saluted in traditional El-Aurian fashion and turned to head out of their quarters. Lorain called out just before the door whooshed shut.

"œTake your time boys, and have fun!"

Once in the hall way Jalen tapped his combadge

"œComputer, what is the location of Lieutenant Commander Kyan Mackenzie?"

"œCommander Mackenzie is on deck 6 near the holodecks." Jalen chuckled, he should've known it wouldn't be that easy. Not only was Mackenzie an Only, which already made him a expert on Foolies, it was also that he was a Security Officer, so of course he could spoof his location.

"œWhat's funny Papa?" Leran asked slightly confused.

"œOh nothing, I just forgot how much fun Foolies can be. Come on we must hurry to find him, he might already know we are after him." Jalen then picked up speed and ran through the halls with the boy on his hip, giggling as they ran. Jalen choose to take the inter-deck ramps instead of the Turbolifts as he was only going up one deck.

*****
[A few moments later | Deck 6, near the holodecks | USS Challenger-A]

Jalen rounded a corner as he made it to deck six and lowered the boy from his hip. He then crouched down and smiled, mischievously.

"œThey are likely just around the corner. But they will be expecting a Grup, like me. So, they won't suspect you. You go first and if they are there distract them and whistle like we practiced. And I'll come running. You ready?" Jalen explained in hushed tones. The boy nodded gravely; he loved Secret Squirrel games.

"œAlright"¦ go." Jalen said and Leran rounded the corner in an exaggerated stealthiness. Jalen stood with his back to the wall, awaiting his son's whistle, when he heard a soft almost cooing like noise and turned to search the hall. He found a creature that somewhat resembled a mythological dragon. Jalen examined it at a distance, but the creature didn't seem to be scared, and was obviously domesticated. So, Jalen squatted down and held out a hand, reaching out with his empathic El-Aurian gift for listening and enticed the creature from it's hiding place. After a moment, the creature sensing no hostility from the larger humanoid sauntered out and stood before him cocking his head slightly. El-Aurians had a knack for engendering trust in other beings, and it was even easier with animals as they were not as complex as Humanoids. Thus Jalen had no problem when he reached out and stroked the little dragons snout and head. He then held out his arm and the creature climbed up Jalen's smock-varient uniform to purch on his shoulder. Just then Jalen heard the boy's whistle and smiled.

"œHang on little Dragon." Then he began running full tilt down the hallway to catch the wayward Only. He came around the corner screaming.

"œOlly, Olly, Oxen Free, I Caught You!" Only to be stopped in his tracks by not one but two Onlies rolling around on the floor wracked by gales of laughter. Jalen stopped beside his son looking down at the Onlies quizzically.

"œCommander Mackenzie? I don't think I know this Foolie." The little creature on his shoulder seemed to chuckle as well, and Jalen reached out to stroke him.

[Program: The Gardens of Emperor Guilan, El-Auria

Jalen and Lorian had decided that after the trauma of the Doomsday & Frontier Day events, they as a family needed some downtime and thus they checked Learn out of school for the afternoon once they saw that the Holodeck was free. They were now walking down the hall a perfect image of familial bliss. They stopped before the entrance of the Holodeck and Jalen knelt down and placed his hands on Leran's shoulders.

"œSo, what does my favourite Boy want to do in the Holodeck? Today is all about you for being such a brave, strong Boy during the recent scary events." The young Bajoran boy beamed at his father and made a big show of thinking about it for a few moments, while looking back and forth between his fathers.

"œI"¦ want to go to the Imperial Gardens of Emperor Guilan." Jalen nodded, he knew that program well it was one of the things in his personal effects when he had been dragged away from El-Auria, and he felt a pang of guilt. He of course was the one who had shown the obscure historical program to his son, but he had only done so in an attempt to give the boy a glimpse of the glories of El-Auria during it's golden age. But the boy had taken to it the way that some take to The Adventures of Flotter. In fact Jalen had been forced to utilize some of his considerable personal resources to get one of the best Holonovel designers to expand on what he'd had, which was purely environmental, and add characters and events from his Historical Database to the program to make it interactive and entertaining.

Emperor Guilan was the first and only Boy Emperor during the Golden Age of El-Aurian Enlightenment. Due to a disastrous war that had taken its toll on the ruling dynasty, and Guilan, the youngest son, was only 14 when he took over the throne. He was quite a popular figure, whom history painted as the greatest listener of a race of listeners, who had negotiated an end to the conflict by truly understanding his enemies, and in the end forgiving them. He was known for being a boy, and thus throwing lavish parties on the grounds of his Imperial Palace, but unlike other rulers, everyone was welcome no matter what class of person they were, and especially all the children of the area.

Jalen got up and inputted the information needed to start the program into the panel on the wall beside the doors and waited for computer to respond. After a moment it said;

"œProgram created, please enter when ready."

*****

Inside the holodeck the various people would see the game of monopoly morph into a lavish and well manicured tiered garden that was overlooked by a massive and alien looking palace that seemed to be made of pure crystal of some kind. Around the garden were strategically placed tables of food and drink, so no attendee would have to walk further then a few steps to indulge in them. Around the garden were various people all mingling about, and hundreds of children who were playing various games around the gardens, the adults didn't seem at all bothered by the children and made no attempt to hinder their prolific play. From games similar to tag, hide and seek, Cowboys & Indians, Red Rover, Captain My Captain, and all others one could imagine were being played on the various tiers. Spread out at strategic points were formally uniformed guardsmen who kept watch as well.

The two Onlies and the Human who were there saw their clothing be holographically replaced by appropriate style of clothing, reminiscent of something from Earth's Renaissance period. Lieutenant Commander Garrison was suddenly clad in a silk and taffeta ballgown with flowing skirts and a bodice, her hair done up in a high tiered updo with nests for various small creatures who were politely chittering away at each other, seemingly completely tame and trained for this kind of do.

The two Onlies on the other hand were transformed into something more appropriate for children. Lieutenant Commander Kyan was now dressed in a miniature version of the uniform worn by the various guards scattered about, his chest even bore some medals, and a miniature sword at his hip. The sword seemed heavier than it should be to be made of something akin to steel, but not so heavy as to be unwieldly for a boy of his size. Max on the other hand was now dressed in the style of a noble child of that era, with pantaloons and puffy shirt. After a moment the sound of the heavy doors opening could be heard and Jalen, Lorian, and Learn, entered the holodeck as they crossed the threshold their clothing holographically changed to suit the environment, Jalen was now dressed in an obviously expensive if serviceable khaki style suit, and had an obvious erudite air about him. Lorain was dressed all in grey, in what might pass as a cassock analogue of some kind, but obviously looked like a clergyman of some kind, though the exact faith was impossible to place by the Human and Only observers. Leran the boy of the group was suddenly dressed in the clothing befitting an upper middle-class boy, in a style that seemed a fusion of the colours, styles, and fabrics of his two parents. As so as he was inside Leran ran off and joined the mass of children. While Jalen and Lorian held hands and mingled out slowly amongst the various adults, seemingly content in their own world.

[Sickbay - USS Challenger]

Jess listened to the new doctor's accomplishments with wonder as he recounted centuries of experience. She could only dream of that sort of competency as even under the best of circumstances, human life span was at best 150 years now. Regardless, of relative experience and positions, she was the one that was going have to decide how to best utilize her new asset.

"I'm not sure exactly where to start with a resume like that Doctor, but, while Challenger does currently boast 112 children aboard, their medical needs are minimal. It is good you have trauma experience because that is likely to be where you will be needed as this ship is, a 'braw brawler' as her Captain will tell you and we tend to end up with casualties because of it. All we can do at the moment is be prepared for a mass casualty event and hope we don't get one."

[Sickbay - USS Challenger]
Jalen nodded as he had once been a Dean of Medicine himself, basically the civilian equivalent of the Chief Medical Officer of a Starship, and on some classes and starbases the exact same thing. His being here would likely stand out as being strange, even with 112 children of various races onboard the vessel. Thus Jalen decided he had to expose a bit more about his past.

"œAs you are likely aware Commander, I did my Cadet Cruise on the Challenger as well, and while I was here, I noticed that your vessel has a rather colourful Miri"¦ I mean Only, who is assigned here. As well as a civilian Only as well. One of my past honours was aiding the Onlies with their integration into the Federation after they were discovered by the Enterprise. I also served as their first Surgeon General and trained up one of them to replace me before I left. So I was quite happy to be placed here as I figured my unique skill set might be needed with such a precocious and impulsive member of such a unique species on board. As I suspect that since there are so few of them who have chosen to serve in Starfleet, there would be very few doctors who are trained in their unique forms of care. Let alone one who has had decades of experience in dealing with them. Though for the moment, I shall go and do rounds and ensure that as much trauma space as possible is freed up in the case of mass casualties, is there a nearby overflow ward or cargobay that can or needs to be converted to that task?"

Thanks for the welcome everyone. I hope that I can do justice to the quality of your own writing.

[Sickbay - USS Challenger]

The attractive redhead looked up at the unfamiliar voice and presented a brilliant smile as she spoke.

"Hello Doctor, welcome to Challenger sickbay. Currently, we have two patients in serious condition from our last battle, both suffering from extensive plasma burns.

"As for what to expect. The truth is unknown. It seems we've managed to encounter a massive weapon known as a Doomsday Machine. The name gives you an idea of what we could possibly face. We have all personnel at the ready and medical teams ready to respond as needed. Where do you believe you could provide the most good?"

[Sickbay - USS Challenger]

Jalen stood at attention as he was addressed by the CMO, she was a far younger, and objectively a very beautiful woman. But Jalen had seen and done it all, and such carnal things had little effect on him anymore"¦ that or if he was truly honest with himself, he had played himself out after the destruction of the El-Auria as a means of coping with the loss, and as he had given in to every carnal indulgence imaginable, it all just bored him now. Well aside from the intimacy he shared with his Husband, but that was far more then simple carnality. He raised a quizzical eyebrow at the mention of a "˜Doomsday Machine', he knew he had read something, somewhere, at sometime about that but couldn't place where. He then heard her request for him to decide where he could be the most useful.

"œCommander, I am a Pediatric Specialist, though I have experience with Trauma and Emergency Medicine,  even that is with a focus on Pediatrics. I have also spent most of the past 4 centuries focused on Pediatric Medicine in all it's myriad forms. Though as I am sure you are well aware from my personnel file, I am also a bit of an expert on Cybernetics and the Borg, but I am not sure that any of those specialties would be of any use in this kind of crisis. Unless we start getting a lot of Only or Pediatric casualties. As such I leave it up to you to place me where you think I would be most useful."

[Kartos Family Quarters | USS Challenger]

Jalen had arrived on the Challenger during the last crew rotation, although being a Pediatrician meant he hadn't really met much of the crew yet. I had barely even had the chance to interact with the rest of the Medical Department, as his duties had very little overlap with the other senior medical personnel and doctors on board. At the moment he was snug in bed his husband wrapped in his arms, when the piercing trill and red glow of the red alert sounded in his quarters. He grumpily rolled over and quickly got out of bed, with a smoothness that came from decades of service on military vessels. He was just putting on his uniform pants when his husband sat up on his elbows, a look of concern on his face. The much younger Bajoran had no experience with military matters, having served in the Bajoran Provisional Government before find his true calling with the Prophets.

"œWhat is it Jalen?" The Bajoran man's face was a mask of fear, as he looked to his much older husband for reassurance.

"œI'm not sure Lorian, but I am sure you and Learn will be safe here. But I have to report to Sickbay. I'll update you as soon as I can." Jalen said as he fastened his tunic like Smock Varriant teal uniform on his body. He then went to the bed side and kissed his husband on the lips. Causing the Bajoran to blush.

"œBefore you go, we should pray." Lorian said as they broke the kiss. He than smoothly swept aside the bed clothes and got out of bed. Jalen smiled, Lorian's unshakable faith was one of the things he admired most about the man, and one of the traits they shared in common. Jalen reached out and took his husbands hand and helped him from the bed, and then continued to hold his hand as they made it to shrine they kept in the heart of their quarters common area, and knelt together. Jalen lit a stick of Bateret Incense and stuck into the sand before the great wheel that was a representation of the Faith of the Propehts. Once that was done Jalen bowed his head and took his husbands hand, as Lorian entoned the words,

"œ Jia kasha tren tolaren lapor ilani kor ena tana talinok. Jia kasha treyna tolaren lapor ilani kors ena. Jia kasha tren." [Heal, fight, keep away illness(es) (and) disease (from) friend(s), family (and) relatives (and) protect (and) strengthen (them).]

Jalen couldn't help but smile, the words of the Healers Prayer had become the Family Prayer, since Jalen's primary calling was that of a healer, and even now in the midst of crisis, Lorain prayed not for their safety, but that Jalen would be able to heal others and keep them safe. After a few moments of quiet reflection Jalen eased himself up from his kneeling position and placed his hand on his husband's shoulder.

"œI must go now Lorian, but I shall return." The Vedek brought his hand up and squeezed Jalen's.

"œI never doubt it. For you are as constant as the rising of B'hava'el itself. I will remain here in prayer while." Jalen nodded and then bent down and kissed his husband again. He then made his way to the door, pausing at the coat rack to put on a white Medical Coat, then left.

[Sickay | USS Challenger]
Few moments later he arrived in sickbay, and found it relatively calm. He went to the CMO and reported in.

"œCommander Fellows, Dr. Kartos reporting to station. Where do you need me? And do we have any assessment of what we are to expect?"

Character Bio: Jalen was born circa 1579 by earth reckoning, on El-Auria. He was a medical prodigy and quickly excelled at anything medical related he could get his hands on. By the age of 50, relatively young for an El-Aurian, he was already a tenured Dean of Pediatric medicine with dual specialties of Child/Adolescent Psychiatry and Developmental/Behavioral Pediatrics. He served in this capacity for another 50 years before he would take up an interest in Trauma and Emergency medicine, and would return the El-Aurian medical academy to pick up another double specialty in Pediatric Emergency Medicine and Pediatric Surgery. It was at during this second round at the El-Aurian medical center that he would meet his Husband, who was studying at the same university, but with a focus on Diplomacy and Politics. They would be married shortly after their mutual graduations, though Jalen would stay on at a prestigious El-Aurian Pediatric Hospital as the Dean of Medicine, and his husband Horvath would be sent out as a dedicated first contact specialist with the El-Aurian Space Navy. Over the next few centuries Jalen would distinguish himself as the leading Pediatrician on El-Auria.

Jalen and Horvath lived a happy life surrounded by friends and family, whenever Horvath was home from his duties. With little excitement in their life beyond the purchasing of antiques or vacations to the most interesting worlds within the El-Aurian sphere of influence. Jalen even joined Horvath once when he was working on a particularly difficult Diplomatic mission involving a world whose childhood mortality rate was quite high, Jalen's prestigious medical talents helped rectify that situation, and in turn engendered the race to the El-Aurian people. Allowing Horvath to finish his negotiations, which resulted in bring the planet into the El-Aurian sphere of influence as a protectorate. Things went very well for the young (by El-Aurian Standards at least) couple. That was until the fateful day when Horvath's team was chosen to negotiate with a new hostile in the quadrant, known simply as the Borg. No one knew how fateful this would be for the race"¦

For awhile it seemed that things were going well for the two polities, but then out of nowhere the Borg took a much more aggressive stance and actually injected the El-Aurian negotiations team with nanites with the intent of assimilating them. Whether for good or bad, fate had decreed that the assimilation of El-Aurians would not be so easy, and the process which usually would take a few hours, was drawn out over months of time. The Negotiation Team was brought back to El-Auria and Jalen was devastated by what he found when he arrived at the hospital. He then lead a team of researchers and medical professionals in their exploration of the Nanite problem. While they would be unable to save the Negotiations Team, they were tasked with come up with a means that would've prevented assimilation entirely, alas that was not meant to be. For despite all their advanced technology, and a vested interest in finding an answer, they couldn't solve that problem. In response to the El-Aurian innate resistance to assimilation, the Borg responded with a Pogrom of systemic destruction of the El-Aurian race. For almost a century the two sides fought an unending war of attrition, that was until the fateful day when a fleet of Borg tactical cubes appeared in the sky above the El-Aurian Homeworld, to the last minute the noble defenders held their own allowing as many of their kin to escape the devastation as possible. Jalen was in one of the last military vessels to leave his Homeworld, having had to be dragged out of his laboratory by El-Aurian marines, for he wouldn't give up trying to find someway to prevail"¦ at least that is what he told everyone. When in fact in his heart of hearts, he just wanted to die in the same place that his only love perished by his own hand when the Nanites had gotten too far in the assimilation process for him to save Horvath. He had thought that the loss of Horvath was the worst thing that could ever happen to him, that was until on that cruiser, despondently looking out the view port, he saw his world exploded from the overwhelming bombardment of the Borg fleet. In that moment he lost all hope at ever truly living again.

For a time, what would account for lifetimes for some species, Jalen roamed the galaxy moving from one hedonistic pleasure to the next, all in an attempt to somehow blot out his overwhelming sense of guilt and loss. But no matter how much he poured into himself, the whole that was left was bottom less and greedily absorbed all he could give it. There was hardly a bar, tavern, or house of pleasure, in the Alpha and Beta Quadrants, that he hadn't frequented (and even less he hadn't been thrown out of). But through all this he was still El-Aurian and he had made friends, which for him was providential. For when Jalen was at his lowest point, a bottle of Aldebran whiskey in one hand, an El-Aurian phaser pistol set to kill in the other, the song that Horvath and he had chosen for their wedding blaring from the speakers in his rented hotel room, and his own resolve finally poised to follow through with that most final of solutions, that one of those many friends sent him a comm message. It was one of the Federation Medical personnel assigned to aide the children left on Miri's World after the devastation of the Life-Prolongation Virus that devastated the adult population. In this opportunity Jalen saw a chance at perhaps redeeming himself. So he sobered up and made his way to Miri's World to meet with the Mirians, or Onlies as the nearly immortal children began referring to themselves. For decades Jalen worked with, and eventually led the team, of Federation relief workers who aided the Onlies with their integration into the Federation. After the integration was complete and the Onlies had formally joined the federation, Jalen stayed on as their Chief of Medicine for a time, training up one of the Onlies to replace him. Then he got another call from a friend, this time to go and aide with the relief of another stricken world, Bajor. This time the world was in shambles after decades of exploitive occupation by a foreign power and the near eradication of its culture. Jalen would again heed the call to work with this stricken people and made his way to Bajor.

It was among these nearly broken people that he truly found peace, for the first time since he witnessed the death of his homeworld. This was also the place where Jalen learned to love again. For shortly after his arrival, he met a rather striking and insightful Bajoran man who was his liaison to the new Provisional Government. In many ways he reminded Jalen of Horvath, they both had the same lust for life, and the unshakable understanding that all people are inherently good. Jalen was also struck by how the man, raised in a world of horrors, didn't hate those who had inflicted those horrors on his people. No indeed the young man felt a kind of sympathy for them. Knowing in his heart that most of them were just doing what they had to do to survive, for the Cardassian Government would've been just as quick to kill their own as they were to kill the Bajorans. Jalen during his time on Bajor took to the culture and the people to the extent that he even applied for and won Bajoran Citizenship, and even converted to the Bajoran Faith.

Jalen would remain on Bajor for a long time, having seen it become independent and then to be "œallied" with the Dominion, and how it was liberated again, and finally how it was brought into the Federation. And now for the first time, as a full-fledged Federation Citizen Jalen was faced with a daunting choice, to serve with another Space Force, or not. In the end he submitted his application to Starfleet Medical and was whole heartedly approved for acceptance. Though they regrated to inform him that given the state of the fleet at the moment, the Starfleet Bureau of Personnel would not be able to offer him a commission or position commensurate with his lifetimes of experience. Which Jalen was more then happy to abide by, as long as he could bring his Husband and Son with him, which was something Starfleet is used to accommodating.

Jalen was walking across the quad of the Starfleet Medical Academy Campus on Earth. He had just finished the graduation ceremony with the other Medical Graduates, and unsurprisingly he was the oldest one there, and one of only a handful of students who had persued a civilian medical career before joining Starfleet. As such he had an accelerated training cruise, but even so he had graduated 1st in his class. The speeches were done and now was the waiting between the ceremonies and the celebration, a celebration he was bound and determined not to attend, for such parties are for the young. Besides he had a far better offer, and one he wasn't going to miss. He straightened his dress uniform as he walked through the manicured and well-maintained gardens. Jalen rounded a path that was particularly shaded with trees, when he was suddenly attacked by a squealing ball of laughter. Jalen caught the boy-torpedo in his arms and tossed him up into the air, with seeming carelessness, and then caught the boy as gravity caught him and brought him back down to earth, and began to tickle the squealing boy.

"œDa, stop, da"¦ I'm sorry"¦" The boy got out through fits of laughter. Jalen continued for a moment or two longer and then had pity on the boy and stopped his assault. The boy remained on the ground panting for breath. Jalen stood and turned around to see a tall, athletic, and strikingly handsome Bajoran man dressed in the green and grey of a Vedek. Jalen went to him and embraced him and planted a chaste but passionate kiss on the man's lips. After the broke the Vedek spoke.

"œMmm"¦ those are still the best lips I have ever kissed, I guess it's due to all your experience." Jalen blushed slightly at the compliment.

"œCome now Lorain, it can't be that good. For you are one of only two people who have ever said that." Jalen looked deeply into Lorian's eyes and the two shared a world of internal dialogue, the depths of which words could never adequately do justice. They were interrupted by the boy pulling on their clothing.

"œCome on Da and Father, it's time to go, we don't want to be late." The two men looked down at the boy and laughed at his cuteness. Despite the fact that they were traverseing half the continent to get to dinner, it would take them but mere moments on earth. The boy wasn't yet used to all the marvels of modern Federation Technologies.

"œYes of course, Learn, we wouldn't want to be late for our reservation at Sisko's. They have the best food on the planet." The Vedek said as he took one of the boy's hands and Jalen the other, the tree then made their way to one of the conveniently located transporter pads. As they stepped on to the platform, the light of Sol glinted of their matching sets of Bajoran earrings, each set with a single vibrant purple jewel"¦
