USS Challenger - Bridge

Mondo nodded to his superior officer, "Internal containment is fairly straightforward, with many options.  Each stretch of corridor assigned a deck and section juncture, with a forcefield generator at each junction point.  You simply designate the confinement field icon and then the deck and section ID.  This system is in addition to the emergency atmospheric containment systems.  Of course, individuals can also be confined to quarters, or in the Brig.  The Brig has an independent Sarium Krellide backup cell to provide for confinement even during momentary power interruptions.

Each of these additional systems is here and here.  Security has authority to enact these as needed during a security incident, but any confinement must be subsequently co-signed by a department head, and if it is to last longer than 12 hours, by the Second, First, or Commanding Officer.  Of course, adequate caloric intake, hydration, and grooming must be provided to any detainee kept past the 12 hour mark.  This allows us to comply with Federation standards regarding prolonged detainment."

When the topic of beaming Sigurdsdottir came up, Mondo moved back to the Tactical station.

"Maintaining an annular confinement beam and particle stream would create a larger beacon of activity than active sensors, although it may be that the technology of the locals is not sophisticated enough to detect it.  It is difficult to know what the limits of their science are, given the adulterating of their natural development."

He touched the console, adding, "I have scan results... I am attempting to have the computer analyze them to see if anything of interest may surface."

James was impressed with Mondos knowledge of protocol. Many Starfleet officers (including James) couldn't give out information on when federation detainees standards came into effect and what that entailed. James wondered that if there more officers where like Mondo, where would the federation be now. Definitely a better place....

James came back out of his head as the petty officer made his way back to his console.

"Ah so is it's easy on this ship to do a rolling confinement?.... Officer Nari you seem really knowledgeable on protocol, how long have you been in security? I need to read up."

It was a relieve that there great officers onboard, while they would be alot to live up too, it seemed like the Challenger would be a good learning environment.

"How many cells do we have for prisoners? Whats the protocol if we are full up?" He said, as he continued to tap his way through the specs and armaments menu on the console.

[Bridge - USS Challenger]

Lisa also joined in with the applause. She hadn't known what the protocol was for congratulations on the Bridge, but she was happy clapping was acceptable as she really wanted to show her appreciation for the petty officer.

Her attention was also drawn toward the new arrival, and as soon as she saw him she began to wrack her brain for his medical file. Had he had his transfer physical yet? She thought that he'd been here awhile, but she wasn't entirely sure. She focused on her thoughts instead of his small blunders as he made his entrance. Honestly, James was doing a fine job as far as she was concerned. Her own beginnings saw her being queasy about space travel in general, and she barely spoke to anyone beyond a "yes ma'am," "no ma'am" to her superiors. She didn't even think she reported in to the captain, she was hidden in sickbay all the time.

Lahr and James were carrying on a conversation so she waited for a break in it before introducing herself. Having gleaned nothing about the man from searching through her knowledge of medical files, she had some fact finding to do on James. Standing, she inserted herself between the two officers somewhat awkwardly, then gave Walding a smile.

"Hi, I'm Doctor Belmont. You won't usually see me here, but I wanted to get a little closer to the action this time around. I don't believe we've met, did one of the other doctors conduct your transfer physical?"

It was cunning, she knew that. If he hadn't actually received his physical even though he had plenty of time to do so since he arrived then he couldn't really get out of admitting it. Not the most pleasant way to start a relationship, but she knew that the chief medic couldn't be friends with everyone and sometimes business came first.

Lisa overhear the message from Ruth and she gave a small smile at the compliment from the science chief. It was actually really nice to be able to hear things like this first-hand. Sometimes check-in messages from away teams piped through to sickbay and obviously they always did when there was a medical emergency, but not always. She was pleased that the plan appeared to be going well so far.

James was drawn away from his self indulgent look at the Challengers weapons systems by the Doctors introduction.

"Nice to meet you Doctor Belmont. I don't believe we have met, though I have been helping move medical supplies to medbay so you may have seen me going in and out." James looked up at the doctor, giving her a teethy, hearty smile. It never hurts to try and get on the good side of the person who could save you life, or help you with an embarrassing medical problem, that's what his mother had always said.

"I don't know who.....if..I have had a physical since I've been aboard... but I had one just before I left my last post so I'm sure nothing has changed, they should of sent that over when I transferred."

James tried to maintain his smile, but the thought of a physical lead to him gulping after he finished his sentence. While doctors where always pleasant and nice, James just hated being prodded and monitored, the mere thought of it almost causing a shiver.

USS Challenger - Bridge

Mondo pointedly did not notice when the new Ensign on the bridge nearly tripped.  One of the first things a Hupyrian servant learned was not to see things that they were not supposed to see.   As such, he feigned disinterest for a moment, listening to Sigurdsdottir's check-in.  He decided to re-engage as the topic turned to music.  It seemed that more than enough time had passed.

"Sir," he said, addressing Ensign Walding, "Petty Officer Nari reporting.  If it pleases you, Sir, I will move my operations to the Auxiliary console and provide you my seat."  Mondo gestured to the Tactical console he had, until recently, been occupying.

"I would additionally be very pleased to assist you in familiarization with the Challenger's systems.  She's based on the Excelsior design, and there are some vagaries with the interface related to mirroring operations on an Excelsior class ship.  I can demonstrate how to switch the User Interface to the more modern LCARS types you are accustomed to."

He was glad when Officer Nari joined the conversation. He turned to face the Officer, hoping he could move the conversation away from the talk of physicals.

"No no officer feel free to to reman at that console, I can work, and become acquainted from here. Though I wouldn't say no with some help to get me used to the systems, the interface is causing me some trouble."

He glanced over to the doctor and then back to the Hupyrian.

"Could you also show me the Protocol for internal containment onboard...never...know...when that could come in handy, don't spare me the details."

PO1 ShranLahr ch'Verret
[Orbit around Zindi Moran - USS Challenger - Bridge]

As entertaining as the Ensign was, after acknowledging Walding's return greeting, Lahr turned back to his console to check on the sensor readings.  There was still nothing more than he had already found.  Some part of Lahr knew that those faint ion trails were meaningful - they could be a clue to identifying those responsible for bringing in the Klingon weapons.

His thoughts were interrupted by Walding asking him about accessing the internal sensors.  The Andorian chuckled, not at all surprised the human asked him and not the newly promoted Petty officer sitting in the tactical first seat.  Hupyrians came across as rather intimidating... and most ones people saw were associated with Ferengi.. so they didn't speak.  Walding probably assumed Nari didn't either.  Ha!  Wouldn't he be surprised.

"Yeah sure, no prob."  Lahr locked down his console - proper procedure when leaving your station unattended.. even if only for a moment and walked over to the tactical 2nd seat.

"I know all about moving through security and tactical screens to get to the internal sensors... "  Lahr had initially been part of the Security department after all.

Standing to the side of the mustached officer, Lahr pointed out the proper control sequence and had the man enter the commands.   "There you go.  I wouldn't have thought it would be all that different from a spacedock.   But then again...  Innominatum Outpost's main Ops board was real bi.. buh.. " Lahr caught himself before completing the swear out loud.  "Bad boy to learn."

With the Security officer set up, Lahr returned to his station, signing back in.

"So Walding, what's your music of choice?  Are you one of those that secretly love Klingon opera? or Vulcan monk chanting?" Lahr gave a shake of his head at the memory of his own roommate practicing Vulcan chanting in the early mornings.  "Or are you more into the contemporary?  Or better yet the Classics from Earth like the 1980's? Have ever heard of Rock Ballads?  Amazing riffs."

".......Earth classics for me, I have to admit Vulcan chanting sounds like torture."

James was starting to feel more comfortable around the officer, and to feel abit foolish of not meeting alot of the crew during his time on the ship until now. The bridge crew seemed very personable, kind, and accepting of a few minor cock ups from the young officer.

"My mother likes rock ballets, she once gifted some rock classics to some visiting Klingon dignitaries, though I doubt they listened to it."

He looked down to the console, seeing the routine data come back from the internal scan, not noticing anything of note and exiting the process. He moved on to looking at the ships armaments, which in contrast to many ships he ran through simulations at the academy, where rather impressive. Realising the unnatural rigidness of his stance, he lent over the console in a more comfortable manor, and started to examine the list and look at the specs in more detail, a small smile starting to curl up the left side of his face.

While Lahr had searched the name Poirot, Walding and Captain had seemed to finish their conversation; giving Lahr opportunity to introduce himself.

"Welcome to the Bridge, sir." Lahr began as he briefly stood up from his chair to offer a quick bow to the human to be polite.

"Petty officer ShranLahr ch'Verret.  Though most just call be Lahr."

James was pulled back to reality by the greeting from the Andorian near him. He pulled his head away from the console and looked up at the petty officer.

"Hello Shra.....Lahr, thanks for the welcome.."

James started to zone out again before the realisation that he was a member of the crew, rather than a cadet in a simulation, came flooding back to him.

"Can you by any chance show me how to access the internal sensors, its been a while since I've used a bridge console, I've been doing more menial work on board and I might be abit rust."

A sudden pang of anxiety went across the young officer, as he did not want to appear unfit for the task. 'maybe I should have just stayed on the Earth spacedock.' He thought  'it was more....'

".....I used to work on a spacedock so im unsure how much of my experience using the sensors there translates practically to a starship." His words came out fast as he relocked eye contact with Lahr, forcing a slight smile in the process.

"Ok I will....go over there....to the console I.....yer"

James awkwardly nodded his head at the captain, but stopped halfway realising how stupid he looked. Pulling his collar away from his neck, he made his way towards the secondary tactical console, looking straight past the others present to avoid eye contact, though trying to smile to not come across as weird.

He took up position over the console, and in an attempt to look busy, started to tap away at the console, pulling up data and performing a routine check of a few systems, which where both considerably irrelevant to the current situation. 'God I feel like a first year cadet..' He thought, as he stared through the console almost like he was in another place entirely. For not the first time since he had been reassigned, he was thinking of home.

Charlie Walding: 55, Male, Science Officer, Lieutenant Commander
Jude Walding: 56, female, Science Officer, Commander
Abby Walding: 27, female, chief

Early Life
James grew up on Earth with his older sister and his parents, as his parents where stationed on Earth and Earth dock. A relatively average child, James spent his early years aimless and without much drive, preferring holo-entertainment to sport or education, often forfeiting the later to do it.
His sister on the other hand excelled at education, however despite there significantly different interests they where very close, and there parents, while slightly disheartened that James did not appear to be moving towards a Starfleet career like his sister, in there footsteps, showered them in love and support regardless.

To the shock of the family, Abby, who achieved great grades and results from her education, decided to pursue a dream to open a small restaurant. She started working with her best friend and her father to start the road to one day owning her own place, and while there parents at the start where concerned, after only a few months they where very happy for her.
In contrast James did better than expected and achieved reasonably high grades, and in opposition to his parents expectation applied for Starfleet. While his application went through a heavy review process due to his record of delinquency, he was accepted after a promising interview at the academy.

Starfleet Career

Academy years:
James' experiences at the academy was a starch contrast to his earlier experiences with education. While he still maintained his love for the holo-suite and a slight delinquent streak, he from the get-go was in the top twenty percent of his classes, and worked hard and always caught up on work if he let it slip to have fun with his fellow cadets.

Early on he realised he liked (and wanted to specialise in) security and tactical. While he often struggled with subjects like 'Crises Negotiation Tactics' and 'Transponder Signals and Prefix Codes', he persisted due to his love of weapons technology and starship tactics. While we never reached top of his class' or always exceled at tests and exams, he was well liked by his teachers due to his persistent attitude and desire to learn and grow. Often he would bug other cadets to join him in holodeck recreations of famous battles, in both an attempt to improve and learn but also to have fun by feeling like a captain, as he would often take control and command the other cadets.

After completing his four mandatory years, specialising in the aforementioned security and tactical, he left the academy for a role on Earth Dock.

James, 22, being promoted to ensign after completing his academy training with distinction

Service history:

Earth Dock: James served on Earth Dock for one year to be close to his family, however during his time there he started to regress to his antisocial and introverted ways, which hadn't been present during his time at the academy. He attributed this to the lack of challenge with his role working security on the dock, so, with a heavy heart, requested transfer to a frontier vessel.

[Bridge - USS Challenger]

As Ian was moving back to the command chair, the turbolift doors opened and a new ensign literally stumbled onto the bridge. Wincing internally, Ian felt a pang of sorrow for the new officer as he couldn't  imagine how embarrassed he'd have been if he'd done the same thing the first time he reported to Captain Rellak of the Tempest forever ago. Keeping his tone and expression a study in neutrality as he spoke.

"Welcome ta the Challenger Ensign."

"Thanks......Captain"

James straightened up once again, straightening out his uniform as he did so.

"Im ensign James Walding, security and tactical. I transferred a while back I have just been....preoccupied with my duties... so haven't been able to make introductions. Here to serve."

James' shoulders untensed and withdrew back to there normal height, and his mouth faulted from an attempt at a stern face into a smile.

[Turbolift - USS Challenger]
As the tubrolift started to ascend the young ensign tugged at his collar, it suddenly feeling very Vonstricting. James had been aboard the challenger for some time, but had until now not been on the bridge. He had been assigned to basic security duties, along with aiding anyone who asked security for an extra hand, and had for the most part kept his head down. He was the unimposing sort, and had managed to stay out of trouble by doing his duties to the best of his abilities and spending his free time in the holodeck. He often was in there running combat sims and battles between long obsolete classes of star ships, so often infact that many in security probably saw him as abit of a recluse. He had hoped his reassignment would help him come out of his shell, but so far that effect had yet to materialise.

With the situation being 'relatively' calm at the moment, and after having a little of the Earth Whiskey he had brought a while back, he had decided to finally pluck up the courage and go the the bridge. After all, no ensign ever got anywhere just helping medical carry boxes.

'It will be fine.... it...will be fine' he kept telling himself, finally managing to adjust the collar so it stopped itching his neck. As he attempted to reassure himself, the turbolift suddenly stopped abruptly.

[Bridge - USS Challenger]

James stepped out onto the bridge. As so often is the case when someone attempts to make sure they walk correctly, he tripped slightly after stepping out of the lift, stumbling for a step before straightening himself up. He stepped out into the main area, and saw what looked like some kind of minor celebration, as members of the crew appeared to be smiling and congratulation what appeared to be a Hupyrian. Unsure how to procced , James stopped moving, straightened up and adjusted his uniform. 'Well....' He thought 'I didn't think this far ahead'

[Outside the Holodeck] After the meeting

James stepped out of the Holodeck, and he looked a state. He was dripping in sweat and looked like he had been through hell, and he had. For the past few hours he had been running a battle drill, to test some ideas he had about deceiving enemy vessels. While his idea ran into more than a few pitfalls during the simulation, James felt he had an idea he could bring to his commanding officers.

He wiped the sweat off as best as he could and, using a reflective surface as a makeshift mirror, brushed his hair back and tried to make himself more presentable, straightening his uniform and fiddling with his ensign pin more than once. He was anxious, the Captain while lovely still intimated him, and her number one gave off an aura of intellect and experience and..... "I'll go for a drink later" he though. "Meet some crew-members and try and relax." He closed his eyes and breathed in heavily.

=/\="Ensign Walding to lieutenant Taray, can I meet you to talk about some ideas and data I have regarding tactics against layton" =/\=

Thanks everyone! I'm loving the ship and crew and getting really into this (as you can prob tell from the Holodeck post ha) I feel very welcome!

[Outside the Holodeck]

James walked up to the holodeck, and pressed the panel outside the door. "Computer load program James-Beta 2." The computer beeped in acknowledgement, and the holodeck doors opened. James stepped through, and onto the bridge of the Challenger.

[The Holodeck]

He strode towards the tactical console, with a degree of confidence he would never dream of displaying on the actual bridge.  He hadn't even been on the actual bridge of the Challenger yet, he had only been a member of the crew for a few days, and had only actually 'officially' joined earlier that day. He had felt mostly unmotivated since his arrival, due to the fact the ship was docked and it still felt weird for him to be there. Only a few days ago he had still been a cadet at the academy, and now he was assigned to a starship with responsibilities and people's lives tied to his actions. His anxiety had also not been alleviated by him being informed he was now on the front lines of the Federation 'Civil war', chasing after the infamous ex vice admiral Leyton. However, the words of Executive Officer Sukal had struck home "As I said, whatever innovative ways we can come up with to hurt Leyton and his Rebels-we should work on discovering."

Sukals own idea to out play Leyton was in genius, to utilise slipstream drives to back up other vessels who go to Leyton's phony distress calls. This idea, James thought, would surely deter Leyton from continuing that tactic. Sukals idea had put an idea into James' head, as it slightly reminded him of an old tactic he had learned about and utilised during his academy days. It had spurred in him to a desire to attempt to contribute to tactics that could be used in upcoming conflict. "Computer, is this ship capable of performing a remote security overwide on another federation vessel if the correct codes are imputed."   "All federation vessels are theoretically capable of this feat." the computer responded almost immediately. A smile formed on James' face.

In multiple battle simulations during his academy days, he had often used what he and some over cadets had called The 'Ricker' manoeuvre. They named it this due to Commander Ricker of the Enterprise D historically using it in battle exercise when he commanded the Outdated U.S.S.Hathaway against The Enterprise captained by Picard. During this exercise, a Klingon tactical officer Worf used his knowledge of the Enterprises security codes to trick there sensors into picking up another ship that did not actually exist, causing panic and giving them an advantage. James had used this by memorising the security codes of the simulated vessels before simulations, and then doing this against unexpecting opponents who had not experienced this before. James wondered if this, paired with holo technology, could become a strategy they could use in the fights to come. "Computer simulate the Enterprise D with a full crew compliment, a reasonable distance in front of the Challenger." The computer beeped, and James saw the Enterprise came into existence in the centre of the Challengers view screen. "Computer, start battle simulation, add crew to the Challenger with me taking the tactical console."

The crew appeared and James changed the ship to red alert. The blaring of the alarm started and orders started flying from the simulated captain, as both ships started to move. James raised shields, just as a spread of photon torpedoes impacted. The ship rocked, the shields dropped to 70%, but James got no reports of internal damage. In retaliating he fired the available Phaser turrets and a small spread of photons, all reaching there mark but none getting through the shields. The ships where moving towards each other now, and as such more fire was coming from the Enterprise, as the vessel moved at an optimal attack angle, allowing more of its weapons to have the dwarfed Challenger in there arc of fire. However the Challenger was not doomed. The Enterprise was a considerable older vessel, and the Challenger was near enough fully up-to-date when it came to its equipment and its armaments. The Challenger was giving back as good as it was getting, phaser beams dancing between both vessels, illuminating them in a red hue. The bridge of the Challenger was busy with the bustle of combat, orders being bellowed at the officers and crew scrambling around at their stations. James held onto his console with one hand as another round of torpedoes rocked the bridge, his other hand a blur of activity. The vessels past each other, both turning for another attack run. Both ships shields where holding, neither ship yet damaged from the encounter. They came in for another pass, somehow with more ferocity than before, the attacks having a less ordered and more animalist aura. James was wrapped up in the spectacle of it all, so much so he it took him a few seconds to realise the Challengers shields where failing. He rushed to keep them raised, him struggling almost, he felt, against the ship itself to find power to divert. Almost like the Enterprise could sense his struggle, the enemy vessel launched another full spread of photons and all its phasers, the sight of the incoming wave of fire filling the bridge of the Challenger with bright red and orange light. The shields held against the first few hits, but could not withstand the barrage. Multiple photons impacted on the ship's hull, shaking it more violently that before and causing consoles to spark. The helmsmen was thrown from his console, his burnt corpse landing near the captain's chair, James himself was pushed back from the console by the force of the blast, but quickly managed to regain his balance and grip on the unit in time to see another crewman rush to take the helm. "Now!" James said, as he realised now was an as good time as any to test his tactic, imputing the Enterprises security code and entering the false signal. He slammed two fingers down on the button to send it off, at the same time jerking his head up from the console to look at the view screen, staring at the Enterprise for a few seconds.James expected the Enterprise to temporarily stop its barrage of the Challenger, allowing him time to raise shields and for the ship to reposition to a better position, to this effect he looked back down at the console and started to reraise the shields, continuing to fire at the Enterprise. It was a massive surprise to him then when before he could do so the ship was again racked with fire, this time causing the engineering station nearby to explode, killing multiple crew members around that console. James looked up in shock to see the Enterprise continuing its attack run, relentlessly raining hell onto the unshielded vessel. "Computer why has the Enterprise not reacted!" Shouted James, with a mixture of panic and bewilderment in his voice. "The crew have perceived that signal correctly as a distraction, and have not reacted accordingly" replied the computer, its calm voice being difficult to hear over the cries of pain and shouting of commands filling the bridge. "Shit this isn't working." James said, slamming his fist into the console as a gesture of disappointment. He stood there not moving as the ship continued to shake in response to the phaser fire and torpedo impacts, fires continued springing up over the bridge, as more and more of the simulated crew where becoming causalities of James' experiment.
Then it hit him like a falling crate of Romulan ale. "Computer, simulate a slipstream jump of a friendly vessel to the same coordinates as the fake vessel signal." James watched a intrepid class ship jump into the system, bang on where the fake signal was supposed to be. The Enterprise did not react, still continuing its attack run even as the vessel started to move off from the jump point. "They still think it's an illusion" James thought, a sense of relief washing over his body. Just as the enterprise was about to fire what would have probably been the killing blow to the crippled Challenger, the intrepid class vessel opened fire.
The Enterprise started to turn, attempting to react to the new threat, as The challenger and the just arrived vessel continued to fire. The Enterprises shields fell, but it still fired on the incoming vessel, however it did not manage to penetrate the vessel. James finally raised the Challengers shield and the crippled ship started limping towards the enemy ship, firing everything it had left. The combined and sustained fire power of both ships proved too much for the Enterprises shields, photons started to impact the hull, debris flying off the mammoth vessel. James launched everything he could and, looking up at the view screen, he watched as the allied ship completed its attack run, flying over the Enterprise just as the Galaxy class vessel exploded, blinding James and forcing him to raising his arm to shield his eyes.

"Computer save and end program."James said, wiping the sweat of his forehead and stepping back from the console. The scene of the intense battle dissipated, the plan holodeck walls could be seen again, no trace of the epic clash that had just unfolded. "Looks like I have alot to talk to Lieutenant Sukal about" He thought, standing up straight, and, with a smile, straightening his uniform.

"Well that was fun."

That's the drug side of things... Security and how Leyton skulked around for a month before we noticed him... well that was before I got here and we're working on that at the moment, but we're going to be overhauling all Security measures.  We got some more cadets and Ensigns in on the last transport ship so we'll be able to do proper patrols, customs etc from now on."
