[Lieutenant JG Savar | Sickbay | Deck Six | USS Discovery NCC-78393-B]

Savar had had enough of waiting for the new doctor. He then decided to meet another doctor, one he knew and one who had just recently attained more of a medical prominence.

"Ensign Wentlock?" he asked.

[Sickbay - USS Discovery]

"Lt. Savar!  How nice to see you!  How can I help?!" Luby said with a warm smile.  "And while I love hearing that I'm now an Ensign, there's an informality down here if you can leave the Vulcan-ness at the door!" she said with a wink.  "So Luby is perfectly fine with me, or 'Doc' if you want a modicum of formality!"

[Sickbay - side room]

Luby had her eyes fixed so firmly on her PADD since she was reading something in a medical journal, that Kestra had to physically shake her to get the Ensign to actually acknowledge her.

"4 times, I've called you... that must be really interesting!" the head nurse said with a grin.

"Sorry Kestra, I thought studying would stop once I graduated.  I've come to discover you study almost more, but the only exam we have on it is if we ever have to use that knowledge in some situation... mostly.  I mean I don't mind training up on a new procedure or bit of equipment that might be for routine stuff." Luby said wiping her eyes with thumb and forefinger then pinching the bridge of her nose.

"Well, while you learn a lot at Academy and it might be all you ever need if you're lucky, you gain a lot more with hands on experience and your own research.  Plus think about it... you're in your twenties, there's a good chance you couldn't read before you were 2 or 3 years old, and even at that point you were unlikely to be reading more than fairy stories... so let's say you maybe learnt some basic first aid from your parents, possibly from you or siblings getting into scrapes while playing!  That knowledge will be retained ... used later when you have to patch up younger siblings and parents aren't around.  But book learning... that wouldn't start properly in the terms of you eventually becoming a doctor until you were at school.  And even then it wouldn't be until you finished high school that you could dedicate your brain to medical science.... erm... I mean..."

Kestra started giggling as Luby started walking with a lumbering gait, arms outstretched at shoulder height, hands hanging limp from the wrist and staring eyes chanting "Brains, brains..."

"I didn't mean your brain had been used for a medical experiment and you needed one, Silly!  But I needed the laugh... I mean you know... applying it solely to medical stuff rather than it having to compete with history and geography or whatever too!  Then you have this pesky thing you need to do called sleep, and eat and... well you get the idea, even if, after high school you were even physically able to dedicate 24/7/365 to learning medicine... you couldn't learn it all, maybe not even in your entire lifetime unless maybe if you were an El-Aurian!"  Kestra smiled and jerked her head at the PADD.

"What had you so engrossed?"

"Interspecies impregnation and care of the pregnancy... complicated stuff cuz even the species where it's feasible, they still hold their own complications!" Luby said with a sigh.

"Sweetie... all pregnancies come with some degree of risk even in fit healthy, same species pregnancies...our job is just to keep the risk down, but it's one of the most unpredictable things we can learn about.  You'll get more confident about it with practice and reading all you can about it is a great idea.  But for now, Miss... you need a break.  You're no use to anyone if you're half asleep and hungry.  Did you have breakfast?  Pretty sure you didn't so... Coffee and some bacon sandwiches I made you!" the older woman smiled.

"Kestra, you're a life saver!  And if nothing comes in I'll recalibrate the biobeds and charge tricorders for a while!  Mind-bogglingly boring but I need to give my poor noggin a break!" Luby smiled, biting into a bacon sandwich.   "Mmmm, nectar of the Gods!"

"Good, plan, enjoy and if I don't see you don't something out here in the main Sickbay inside 20 mins I'll come turf you out and lock the door!"

"No worries I'll be out soon as I've had this... don't think it would be a good look me stuffing my face... a mug of Ratkajino I think most people would accept!"

Luby had just about recovered from the delirious happiness at getting her Ensign pip and being allowed to be called 'Doctor' now.  Even if the staff in Medical still called her 'Lubes'.  She wasn't bothered, it was more that she could now feel she truly belonged there and no more enforced study.  Naturally... both because it was in her nature and a sensible thing for any medic to do, she would read up on new procedures, techniques and equipment as well as filling any gaps in her knowledge.

For that reason she was about to start a session with Kestra, the ship's midwife, because although she knew the theory, she wasn't fully up on the practice.

"Hi Kestra, is Ensign Sh'riall around do you know?" she asked

"Um... good question, I haven't seen her but I came straight here cuz you wanted some extra tuition on interspecies pregnancies." Kestra answered.

[USS Discovery - Sickbay]

An innocent ensign came in and heard Roger and Handcuffs as Luby talking to Don. That was one of those odd moments when you walk in a half conversation. Was he not married to Torra? However this ensign was the Bolorian. "Hey! I come to visit the Chief! How are you? You look fine. No handcuffs I see," he had to say it. "I come to say we miss you. And I had clean your desk too! And I had..."

Don had stopped Bok-Char as he held his hand up. "I am fine. Not cutting my leg off," he shared.

Bok-Char mouth drop and gasped. "Cutting leg off. Oh no we can't have that! But you know my uncle once had almost lost his leg when he was running on the side of a mountain. He was almost taken by a big flying Capli. They are some what like the Bald Eagle on earth. Beautiful birds! And be CLAWS! So big they can pick up a cow and fly off. You can see why my uncle was scared. So he stumbled and fell. He fell a long ways too. And sadly he landed wrong and broke his leg. Matter of fact I think he said it broke four locations. I don't recall," he thinks for a brief second. "Anyways some military officer was flying and doing his rounds and saw my uncle because that Capli was coming down for the second time. You see we are like food to them on our world. And with much accuracy of shoo---"

"Bok-Char please," he tried to stop his lower officer.

Bok-Char knew he needed to not talk to much that what the counselor said. He needed to pace himself and make things short and sweet.

"Ah where was I Oh yes, the Military made shot the near the bird. We don't like harm them because they are extinct on your world. Oh. Not from hunters. But the way the moon reacts to the atomspher which harms these birds. They are rare. Like I said they are beautiful birds. So the savior had landed next to my uncle and patch him up. And funny thing he joked saying he could had lost his leg from the attack---"

=/\= Ensign Malloy to Ensign Bok-Char please report to shuttle bay, =/\=

"Oh I am sorry. I can tell the rest of the story later. If not I start from the beginning!" he said happily to Don. Then he waved to sick bay. "See you later," then he was swallowed by the doors to be not be heard or be seen for a bit.

Don smiled as he sat up on the bed. "Sorry. He loves to talk," he shared to Luby and the others.

[Sickbay]

"It's fine,.." Luby said with a chuckle.  "Hope to see you soon, but not that you need our services on our next meeting!  As for your verbose subordinate there... I'm sure I could research a non-harmful way of restricting vocal chords... I'm not serious, maybe he was just nervous unless he's always like that!  Remember, any dizziness or other symptoms come back if you can or put a call out if you can't.  Promise now!"

Don did wiggle his fingers. "I guess that is good sign," he said.

The needle Luby pulled out was small but when you a patient with little courage because your in medical. That needle seem to be four feet long which he was scared for a second.
Don brown eyes had followed the light and everything seems fine. No diluted eyes. His pupils did shrink when it saw the bright light. They adjust properly when light was moved from distant and went normal as she shut the eye test light off.

The human reaction was fear when Doctors or Nurses want to do more poking about. Don did feel it. "Ah, sure," he sounded unsure. Not lack of faith in Luby, the fear she find something which would not good news.

"I think she had the best people and best training," he said. "Now do I have a clean slate?" he asked. He had no patients. He did attempt to move which he should not. He cringed a bit.

[Sickbay - USS Discovery]

Luby checked all the observations and the scans, she couldn't see anything that would prevent Don from leaving the Sickbay.

"Well, unless you want us to chop your leg off or something, I reckon we could let you go!" she teased.  "However, I want you taking the rest of the day off, and light duties for 2 days.  Plus if you get the slightest amount of nausea, a severe headache or your eyes blurring, dizziness anything like that you come back and see me.  Solemn promise now or next time you're in here we will get Roger and his handcuffs!" she mock-threatened.

"Otherwise you're good to go, and give Torra our love!"

Glad your back. :)

Thanks - tag back.  At the mo I'm assuming a concussion and a trapped nerve in neck that would cause temporary paralysis... nothing that can't be fixed, have the rest of the shift/day off and light duties for a week unless there's any complications from the concussion.

I've left it a little vague so you can let me know (here or Discord) how serious you want this to be!

[USS Discovery - Sickbay]

"Oh, they are fed up with me," he sighed. "You know stuck in sickbay feels like eternity."

"You finished. Congrats! Glad you finished. I am sure we can throw a party for you...if I can get out of here and do what needs to be done. But I got Petty Officer Graham at helm."

He knew his wife would be sure to make a small party of congratulations for Luby. He heard how she made a welcome sign for new crew members. His wife was truly amazing going out of her way to make everyone to be in the upsol.
They are great staff members for medical. That was one the things sick bay needed was a good bed manner. He once had a snippy, snappy doctor who was grumpy as a rusted steel with holes. The guy was so grumpy he made McCoy look like a sweet angel.

Even with their super nice attitude coming to sick bay was the least thing anyone wants. However these days they can cure about anything. So it was not like going to go doctor and fear you got a bad disease. But still there was always something new to pop up.

"Sorry about your fall. Sigh," he said. Yep. He even said sigh for fun. "I feel someone twisting neck like a dirty, wet dish rag. It was worse. I was toss off my feet and next thing I know I whack my head hard against a console and I was out..and here I am. Like magic!" he would toss his arms up but he could not.

Then as Luby was talking about her hair color and saddle. He was baffled. He assume Luby was talking or more rambling. They like to do that all lot down in Sickbay. However for a moment he was not understanding mention of blond hair.

"Did you wanted to be a blonde?" he asked her. Then he had the look of he got the joke. "Blondes are not all that bad. I prefer you with your hair. I mean if you did not fall off that horse you might not be here. That one incident could change everything." He was humoring her. That was a thing he had learn to do.

[Sickbay]

Luby grinned at the thought of a party.  "Gotta get word I passed first, but I suppose we could have a 'Hooray the exams are over' party I suppose... any excuse! And being blonde is a joke... for some reason on Earth there was a generation at least of blonde jokes wanting to poke fun at limited brain functions of females with blonde hair, it was sexist and whatever hair-colour-ist.  No matter, we'll have you out of here soon as we can... if you think being down here for just treatment is torture... pity us that practically live down here!"

She moved the scanner around Don's neck.

"Can you move your arms at all, wriggle your fingers.  I think if anything you have a trapped nerve that I can sort out, and after hitting a console..."

She got her pin light out of her tunic pocket. "Can you follow the light..(she waited for Don to do so, watching the pupils dilate.)... yeah nowt wrong with your eyes or poor Alex would have to take over permanently.  What the hell is going on up there?! Have to remember I was in Exam-land!"

She finished up her examination of Don and clipped the scanner back to the tricorder - she'd used that one because she could get closer to Don's neck.

"I'd like to do a scan of your head just to make sure there's no minor cracks to your cranium I haven't noticed, but otherwise I think it's sort that nerve out and you taking it easy for the rest of the day.  I know you feel 'groggy' but any actual nausea?"

She set the biobed controls to do the head scan and waited for Don's response.

"Good work Luby, checking for fractures and assuming concussion there!" Kestra said with an approving smile.

[USS Discovery - Sickbay]

The reason why Don was not up on the bridge because he got injured pretty bad when the ship got hit. That was how he was laying flat on his back staring at the ceiling.

He had much confidence in Alex Graham as he felt the ship shook again. He was no condition to be there, but he was feeling he could had made it less bumpy.

To makes things a little more interesting Don felt sick in the stomach. It had to be something he had ate before this all unfolded. Like any man wishing he had his wife or his mother on his side. He truly hated to be in Sickbay. They had him stay down cause he did try to get up which was a big no no. They threaten they put him in a stasis. He was not sure that a truth or they lie to tease him.

[USS Discovery - Sickbay]

Luby came out of the room in which she'd been doing her exams in, stretching and yawning then spotted Don.

"Mr. Addams, have you been here long, I'm surprised no-one's been out to see you yet.  I did have an excuse, I was in my Academy final examinations... I couldn't leave short of there being an order to abandon ship.  What you been doing to yourself?!" she said going over and picking up a tricorder to start scanning Don.

Kestra came over.  "It's ok Luby, you can take over... we've already told him to stay put or we'll put him in stasis.  He's not that bad but Roger suggested handcuffs or tying him to the bed, I wasn't sure Torra would be too pleased if we cuffed him to a bed and she wasn't around!"

Luby blushed, she last had been said in a whisper so Luby only could hear but she still wasn't sure that it should have been said even as a joke.  Roger and the handcuffs... that part was ok-ish, after all Roger had transferred from Security when he was on the USS Tempest.  So handcuffs probably seemed a viable option to him.

"I'm assuming potential spinal injury then if you're threatening stasis rather than just normal biobed restraints?  So Don,.." the young medic decided the more friendly route since she and Don had become quite close during their time in 'Paradise' and because of her friendship with Torra.

"...I know what the tricorder will tell me, but you can tell me better how you feel, where it hurts then I can get the medical diagnosis and treat you accordingly.  After all, my hip still gives me gyp after 10 years since I fell off a horse if I'm ever in damp conditions, but according to the tricorder... I'm fit as a fiddle!!"

She let out a sudden chuckle.  "Oh sorry, way my mind works sometimes... I was thinking how I prefer being 'back in the saddle' of hands on medical work rather than stuck in hours of exams, even if that is at the expense of you being in pain, it is my job, then it hit me that phrase with saddle and what I just said about my hip!  For how dark my hair is, I have some right 'blonde' moments! I still don't know why they call them that, since some of the most intelligent people I know are so blonde they're almost Andorian white-haired!"

[Random spare room in Sickbay, 0900hrs, a few days later]

Luby was as prepared as she was going to be, only her nerves would let her down now.  Fun quizzes with the gang and some one hand preparation, holodeck simulations and so on had got her to this point, her final examinations.

Sitting nervously, she took several breaths in for a count of four through her nostrils then out for count of two through her mouth to try to steady herself.  If all went well, soon she would be a fully fledged Ensign and entitled to call herself Doctor.

She logged onto the computer and opened the portal for the examination.  Before long a Vulcan gentleman came into the view of what looked like a lecture theatre, Luby was sure that several other cadets, maybe the Captain's Ruthie and Commander Sigurdsdottir's twin sisters Katya and Arya were there... or least Arya... she belatedly remembered that Katya was in Security not Science... but she'd be doing some kind of final exams she imagined.

"Good luck to you all..." she said to the room quietly but directing it at those cadets she knew.

"Welcome students, whether you are sat here at the Academy or lucky enough to be doing distance learning and joining us from one of our fine vessels or establishments wherever you may be, thank you for your service and good luck.  When your consoles beep, you will have 3 hours for your first examination, if you complete before time, log off and raise your hand so I may dismiss you.  May you perform to the best of your ability.  Any technical difficulties with our distance students please press the blue assistance button, and that will pause the timer for you so you will still have your allotted time, but we can get someone to check on this end and you can get an engineer in from your place of study to check."

Luby waited with baited breath for the console to beep.  When it did and her examination 'paper' appeared on the screen along with a timer counting down from 3 hours she took a deep breath and said "Here goes..." and gave an audible gulp.

[OOC - this is to effectively put Luby out of commission - aka busy doing her exams - until I'm back off LOA]

[Sickbay - Room 3]

Luby, Kestra (and later Roger, Grithaw and Bettina)

Kestra came bustling into Room 3 to find Luby sat with her head bowed obviously deep in thought, over a PADD, Sapphire sitting with one large paw on the Cadet's knee.

"Oh sorry, didn't realise you had a personal tutor!" the Head Nurse joked about the cat.

"She likes to be involved, don't you Sapphy?!" Luby answered looking up then giving the cat a tidbit of chicken breast from the bowl beside her.

"Besides I welcome the company... study gets very lonely sometimes when you're cramming the week before an exam."

Kestra chuckled.  "Well actually, we've got a cure for that, I'm ready for a break and the boys and Bettina are off duty today but coming in to help.  We thought it would be more fun for you to learn in the form of a quiz, and it'll help us brush up some too.  What do you say?"

"Oh, wow... well thanks for wanting to help me, I really appreciate it!"

"Pfft... you've done most of the work yourself, you've been pulling your weight and so on.  Are there any areas you feel weak on?" Kestra asked kindly.

"Yeah... midwifery, I know the theory, I think... but I've never really witnessed a live birth... least not of a person.  Animals yes, I've had enough pets of the female persuasion who weren't exactly nuns shall we say!  But they pretty much get on with it.  I think Grithaw was the one who delivered the last baby?"

"He was, and women, whatever species, do tend to 'get on with it'.  As well you know we're a lot tougher than we look.  Only time it's complicated really is interspecies progeny, or if a foetus gets into distress, but then instinct kicks in, honestly.  I'm trained professionally as a midwife, as in that's my speciality, and in all the time I've been a nurse we only lost one baby and one mother... same birth, and it was in the middle of a huge battle, we're pretty certain it wasn't so much the birth as the fact we were trying to deliver in the middle of a battlefield and the mother already had a massive gash in her leg and had lost a huge amount of blood."

Kestra looked sadly at the cadet.  "I'm not saying this to put you off in any way but the biggest thing about being a medic of any description is that we try to prevent illness and injury, patch up those we can... but still have to face up to the fact that despite out best efforts, death still wins in the end.  We can't save them all.  You've done triage... we save the ones we think we can in desperate situations.  In that particular situation it was a foetal distress but because the station power was out we couldn't just use the medical transporters to beam the baby from the womb, so she died too while we were trying to perform a C-section on her already wounded mother.  Prepare yourself for bad days.  That was one of my worst, the other was when we lost our colleague on the Tempest, a fellow nurse to Choriocytosis on the Tempest... we lost a lot of people but everyone is shocked when a doctor or nurse falls victim to an illness.   Injury in a battle people accept more.  But then we almost lost our CMO at the time too, and he was the one, with the help of the CSO who actually developed the vaccine.  He'd been growing Strobolin the whole time, but we still ran short."

There was a clatter from the main Sickbay and both women looked at one another and Luby stuck her head out.

"I'll re-sterilise them don't worry.  Clipped it with my elbow!" Roger said, crouched like a frog about to leap picking up surgical utensils up from the floor.

"My fault, I was making sure I knew all the names of them on a 'Label it' exercise I was doing for practice.  They want us to learn both standard issue and well old utensils.  I think it's a good idea since we may be in a place like when I was on that away mission in Paradise, AZ around the turn of the century... as in 1899-1900 that is... thankfully my love of history... well you've seen my bag of tricks in my medical satchel!"

"A wise precaution..." put in Grithaw the Bolian coming up behind.  "You never know when you might be without the power to charge utensils.  So I presume you've learnt to suture and bandage correctly as well as use a dermal regenerator and bone reconstruction and so on."

"I'm lucky in that respect, I suppose.  The tiny European village where I grew up didn't have all the mod con equipment, and the local doctor was a friend of my grandmothers so he used to let me help bandage and so on... as I got older he trusted with more delicate tasks, so really all I need is experience, a lot more practice and the nice shiny certificate entitling me to be called 'Doctor' and the rank of Ensign to start!"

"OK, quiz time... let's all grab a drink and we can grill Luby!" Bettina said running in. "Sorry I'm late, I promised to check in on one of the crewman who had eaten something he shouldn't have supposedly, was actually that he'd drunk about 4 more things than he should have ... in this case yoghurt drinks that he'd had sat out on the side!"

"Grilled Luby... does that taste better than a steak?!" Roger joked, linking arms with the cadet and marching her into Room 3.
