Commander Rayek tr'Lhoell
[USS Discovery-B - Deck One - Bridge] Stardate 78288.5  (April 16, 2401)

Hearing Ensign Lorut's report prior to Ruthie's arrival, Rayek gave a nod toward the Bajoran Ops officer.  "Thank you, Ensign."

He tick-marked that off his ship's status checklist.  The first of many status reports he needed prior to his being able to say the ship was ready.

He had just been about to give a general call out to all stations when Ruthie arrived, interrupting his schedule slightly.

No sooner had Rayek sat down about to make that general call again, than the Captain informed him about the networking issues in regards to the MVA mode.  Having it disabled didn't make the Romulan feel any better about the upgrade to the Fleet mode.   But there was literally nothing he could do about it.   He nodded in acknowledgement of this news.  "Yes Captain. Duly noted."

He tapped comm badge while there was a free moment.

=/\= "All stations - report your readiness to your Department Chief.  Chiefs, report your department status within 5 minutes." =/\=

Rayek looked over the Bridge noting that Lieutenant Grippen wasn't present yet.  That wasn't like the Risan officer.  The Romulan would give the man 5 minutes to report in before having Lieutenant Lachlyn send someone to track down the officer.

Rayek also noted that Lieutenant Broadshire also wasn't present - and hadn't been since his collapse on the bridge during the incident with the USS Jupiter.   The Romulan checked his roster and noted that Dem had been signed off by Dr. Betaika as fit to return to duty earlier that morning.

Rayek pondered checking in on the medical officer but was saved from having to do so by Broadshire's timely arrival.

Rayek took one look at the medical officer and he questioned Dr. Betaika's assessment of 'fit for duty'.   While the scruffy look was one that Rayek himself sported - mainly because Tess claimed he looked sexier - it was not a look that did the doctor any favours in that respect.   The man look sallow.

Acknowledging the doctor's report with a "Thank you, Doctor." and tick marking it off his checklist automatically, Rayek then gestured the man closer to speak privately.   "Are you feeling well enough to be on Bridge, Lieutenant?"

A short while later, another of the ship's new complement of officers - newly picked up at Spacedock the day previous, arrived on the Bridge.   Rayek looked over the young officer and nodded in greeting, recognizing the Ensign from his personnel file Rayek had reviewed last night after finally receiving the information.  It seemed Starfleet Headquarters was in a bit of chaos with all the Frontier Day preparations - and files had been misplaced temporarily.

He noted how the officer went straight to his station and smiled in approval, before rising from his seat to walk over toward Science 2.

"Mr. Ramort, welcome to the Bridge." Rayek addressed the man with a slight nod of his head in greeting. "Jolan tru. I am Lieutenant Commander Rayek tr'Lhoell, the ship's First Officer.  When you have a moment, you should present yourself to the Captain; and be sure after the festivities to book yourself for a Meet and Greet with me so we can get to know one another better."

[Bridge | USS Discovery]
Hearing the commander ask the question he has dreaded all day, he leant closer. "œAh, well my stress leave has ended. Just took me a bit to get past"¦" Dem couldn't even bring himself to say it. "œrecent events. I'm happy to be back." Dem lied to himself, in denial, convincing himself that he really was fit for duty. His mind had put a mental block on the Deep Space Nine mission. He could remember glimpses. Running through the tattered ship, ordering a run at the Breen, bridge decompressing. But for the most part, his mind refused to fill in the blanks. "œAny further orders sir?"

Tanner Lachlyn

[USS Discovery - Tanner's Quarters]

"Stop fidgeting with your collar."

Tanner looked down at the PADD and took a deep breath. Savannah had been chatting with her as she prepped for the upcoming shift. It wasn't usual for them to communicate but with the looming celebrations, it had been a little more frequent.  Moving her gaze to the mirror she straightened her shoulders and took in the appearance. Her hair had been lightly curled and she'd kept her makeup neutral, one less thing to worry about getting messed up.

Chief Lachlyn

Did she look alright?

Her dress uniform had been altered by her Aunt, again. Tanner preferred a little give when it came to the uniform but this was cut and molded to her. She would have to watch how she sat. Her fingers moved to touch her new pips.

"œThey'd be proud, Tan." Savannah said quietly from their video chat, "œSo damn proud."

Tanner's eyes welled up slightly and she pushed the lump in her throat down, "œI wish"¦" She let the thought drop. It didn't need to be spoken.

"œAre you coming to the party?" Savannah asked.

"œWhich one? Hasn't she planned a dozen?" Tanner picked up the PADD and offered a wry grin to her cousin, "œOr two dozen?"

"œWhich means you have to make it to at least one." Savannah laughed as she spoke of her mother. There was love in the tone, even if she was frustrated, "œShe's gone overboard this year. You should see the house. It's nuts. Decor, food, and high expectations for the behaviour of her children. Except Junior, of course, he's still allowed to leave."

"œLucky boy," Tanner agreed with a chuckle and a nod, " I can imagine! But don't worry, you won't be abandoned by me.  I am planning to be there Just, have to get some things done first."

Savannah nodded, "œRighto, Chief." She said with a salute, "œDo the things and then come drinking with your cousin." She flipped her blonde hair, "œand maybe have some fun."

"œDeal on the fun. Maybe on the drinking." Tanner nodded, I'm"¦due on the bridge." That sounded so weird. So so weird. She let out a nervous breath and then gave Savannah a friendly wave.

[USS Discovery - Bridge]

Stepping off the lift, she moved over to Tactical and after a brief quiet conversation, relieved the officer on duty. Checking a few things she cleared her throat lightly. Security had been run through their tasks and had contingencies for any possible issues, not that it was expected. She sent an all-clear message to Rayek.

M'Nia

M'nia checked the chronometer. It was about time to check in with Lt. Cmdr lek. She had enjoyed her time on Discovery so far.She and the commander worked well together. She was slowly getting to know other people. She went to his office to report in. She knocked at his office entrance. "Morning Commander. Anything in particular I need to attend to this morning?"

Zavrol Gohun

Gohun remembered the launch of the first warp 5 ship. It was quite an event at the time. He remembered it like it was yesterday. Really it was as far as the el-aurian named Gohun was concerned. Looking outside Gohun stood in stoic silence and finished drinking his coffee. It was going to be a good day. With that Gohin went to engineering.

Quote from: Lek on October 21, 2023, 10:05:19 PM

[Engineering - USS Discovery]

Lek sat in his office and was not happy. He'd been forced to step aside, in his own engine room no less, as yard apes installed the new Swarm program without so much as a 'by your leave'. Now that it was installed, between the installers underestimating his lobes to over hear much of their conversation as they worked and his own intimate knowledge of Discovery that allowed him to essentially reverse engineer the program, he was not happy.

The program was not unlike the command codes that all ships currently had, but this program was designed to allow a 'command' ship to link an entire of fleet of ships to fight as one unit. There was some merit to the tactic, but it was one of those 'good on paper' ideas that no field officer would ever believe was acceptable. An open command link like the Swarm program introduced a critical weakness, namely, if anyone could penetrate the link, they could assume command of all the ships using the link, which in the coming ceremony meant virtually the entirety of Starfleet.

"This is madness."

He snarled as he re-read the specifications of the program for the the tenth time. He drummed his fingers on his desk and made a decision.

"I don't care what Starfleet Command thinks, I'm going to rig a kill switch. Even if it ends my career, I refuse to let Discovery become a zombie for anyone, even for the Admiralty. This will take weeks because I'll have to do this on my own as I will not allow anyone else's career to be destroyed. I will start on my modifications as soon as this idiotic party is over."

Decision made, Lek's mood lightened as he began to think through how he'd go about disabling the Swarm, which was actually an interesting engineering problem.

Gohun not wanting his ship to be a zombie either was in agreement with Lek. The only question is how to make it easy to use. With a thought provoking glance Gohun started to list options.
"If you want the ship independent we have several options. We can simply build in a kill switch for the interface. We can build a secondary interface to override the system. Remember the 37th rule of acquisition The early investor reaps the most interest." Gohun looked around engineering in the hopes of getting input from the chief engineer.

Vila's brown eyes met Rayek's. "Same as before," she said. She glanced around the room. The new arrival was the Captain's child?! Interesting, she hadn't pegged him for the family type.

"Do you need anything else before I let Commander...Lek know we're ready to get the hoses up?" She asked. She'd almost said "that damned Ferengi" but luckily had caught herself in time.

She picked dup a cup of coffee and sipped it. The only thing that was changing much for the Ensign was at least she was sticking to drying out. It was harder than it had to be, because of course, she wasn't being seen by Medical. She was determined to do it herself.

Broadshire's mention of stress leave had the Romulan giving the man a slightly confused look.  Dr. Betaika's daily reports to the First Officers had Broadshire listed on medical leave, which yes stress leave was technically but typically standard medical leave and stress leave were reported separately.

Rayek had assumed the medical leave taken was to recuperate from the virus not stress-oriented.  Perhaps it shouldn't matter the type of leave taken but given the doctor's appearance Rayek was even less sure of the Broadshire's well-being but the Romulan having been pulled from duty himself was loathe to do it to another unless absolutely necessary.   The man claimed to be happy to be back to work... for now he would supposed that would be sufficient.  Perhaps this Frontier Day celebration would be just what the doctor needed.

At Broadshire's query about orders, Rayek nodded towards the VIP chair situated on the other side of the chair.   "I think it's only appropriate you be on the bridge to witness the Frontier Day speech by Admiral Shelby, and Discovery's escort of the Enterprise F."

Of course, none of the Command Officers would be really needed.  That was the whole point of the Swarm feature, the ships would be automated in their movements for the entirety of the escort.

It was at this time that ship status reports began coming in from the various departments.
As departments call in to him, Rayek noted their status on his checklist.   Medical and Ops were accounted for already

Caught up in the Sensors he nearly missed the steps behind him and had to control himself to not make a little jump when he heard the voice of the Commander behind him.
He quickly turned around standing at attention, not wanting to be found lacking the XO in his first impression.

"Sir, yes sir! I will book right after the celebrations if that is acceptable. I just finished work on the subspace Sensors, Discovery is a fascinating ship, I never had the chance to measure blinking subspace vortices with such high definition, I mean.. Diagnostic of primary Subspace Sensors completed and logged."

Rayek smiled a bit at the young officer's enthusiasm. "Of course, whenever it suits you best.  For now, I will leave you to report your station's readiness to your Department Head." He said giving a slight nod in Kinley's direction as a prompt.

Taking a hint from the Commander's order Ramort turned towards the console again and opened the technical interfaces of the sensors he had just worked on. He removed the system tag indicating the calibration process and flagged them as ready for the Engineering and Ops systems, it was unlikely they would be needed but it was protocol so it had to be done. After closing the interface he noticed a new reading in the sensor listing, something called a Unified Fleet Sensor Grid, something that hadn't been part off his training, he would have to look it up in the specs later or ask engineering about it. Maybe it was somehow connected to the commotion of personal that allegedly was doing something to the ship in engineering.

Accessing the general Science interface again he compiled his sensor logs, moved them to the shared science database and marked it for Commander Garrison to be made part of the overall readiness report of the Science Department, then he addressed her directly:

Commander, all Sensors are back online and calibrated for deployment."

It wasn't just his previously perfect countenance, he felt generally tired and was requiring more sleep. The waist band on his uniform was also loose indicating some weight loss. Ever since that experimental vaccine was injected into him he hadn't felt like himself. Something was off, but surely Starfleet wouldn't approve a vaccine without proper testing.

The Risan splashed some cold water onto his face, grabbed his padd, and exited his quarters towards the bridge. Enroute, Malik checked in on the Flight Team and their various activities. Alex was already at helm, which was good. The shuttlebay had also reported in. This was good, the only missing piece was him.

The turbolift doors opened to reveal a packed Bridge, seemingly everyone and their Grandma had decided to attend the Admiral's speech. Seeing their first officer, Malik made his way over to the Romulan.

"Flight Control Department report all green, commander. *cough*." The Risan cleared his throat, and suddenly remembered he hadn't brushed his hair before he left. For someone who took great pride in their appearance, Malik inwardly cursed at his ineptitude. That damn vaccine... Hopefully the XO wouldn't pick him up on a bit of messy hair, considering the entire Romulan race had one hair style.

Looking around, Murphy spotted the one other permanent ensign on the crew already saving him and Harrington a seat. "œVinod!  Glad you saved us a table! It's pretty packed in here. Ensign Rajagopalan grinned. "œI know right? Gohun remembered when the M-5 built by Dr. Richard Daystrom took over the enterprise and nearly killed the crew of several other ships. One would think that Starfleet would have learned but apparently not. Children have a hard time seeing the bigger picture.   Having reported in Gohun headed back to his station.
