As the afternoon wore on, the pending late-day storm finally broke overhead, showering the jungle in a deluge lasting more than a half hour- and dropping nearly three inches of rain. Thanks to the density of the triple canopy above them, the away team was able proceed through the storm, but it was not a pleasant time.

Once the downpour ended, all in all, the storm did little more than make everyone uncomfortably wet. Unfortunately, the influx of additional moisture served to increase the post-storm humidity levels from the baseline miserable to the nigh-intolerable. Worse still, the storm brought out several varieties of mosquito and glob-fly-like insects in force, making the trek all that much more unpleasant.

It was possible that the individuals in the away team had been more miserable in their lives, but each was hard pressed to remember when. After pausing for a few minutes from having to cross through a particularly dense patch of undergrowth which had forced Nira to use her Mek'Leth to open a passageway, between Savar's tricorder and Zhuk's superlative hearing, they became aware that a pair of humanoid lifeforms lingering just at the edge of visual range.

The tricorder revealed that they were native lifeforms, a little over two meters in height, and were armed with bronze daggers and spears, with one also being armed with an atlatl.

Twisting in her chair, Ruth turned to face CatalÁ¡n

"And Mr CatalÁ¡n, I apologise if it sounded as though I was suggesting you weren't doing your job properly.  I'm a bit of a mother hen when it comes to people I know are on away teams and I'm not with them!"

Ruth smiled across at McNair, he was a junior officer and yet seemed outwardly calmer than the rest of them.  Maybe because he had less experience of the horrors that could occur.

She shook herself, mentally.  That was unfair on the man, he might have gone through many terrors.  The CSO made a mental note to ask Nira if they could have some kind of ship social evening so everyone could mingle and get to know one another.

Ruth let out the breath she hadn't realised and rolled her eyes at Ian's told you so then with a grin just nodded in a 'Yeah yeah OK, I concede!' way.  They'd known each other long enough that they wouldn't take any animosity from it.

Ruth listened intently and then waited until all transmission was finished.

"I'll pop down to Astrometrics, see what aur NY Taxicab makes of it and maybe have a look at it myself, Captain.  Keep me posted please!"  Ruth knew Ian would know what she meant.

=/\=Petty Officer Sedek please report to the Bridge =/\= she got the Vulcan PO to come up and monitor Bridge scans so she could be in Astrometrics when the data came in.  Once she was relieved with a curt but polite nod from the Vulcan, she made her way down to Sciences.

Ian acknowledged Ruth's request with an inclination of his head and turned to face the viewscreen, which was rather uselessly displaying the planet below them.

"Ops, in addition ta the lock on the away team, I want concentrated scans of the area for any signs of cloaked Romulans. We were sent here because the little gits might have a listenin' post. If'n they've established an outpost, they may just have a ship in the area ta protect their investment."

Buck briefly caught the Commander's eye, wondering if she were going to instruct him to do anything but instead the exchange lasted no longer than a second as he nodded in acknowledgement of her smile before she was headed down to Astrometrics.

His head looked up again as he was addressed, or more exactly, his station was addressed. Here he looked over at the Captain, asking about any Romulans who might have been in the area. "On it, Hoss." Buck acknowledged.

Initially he had started out with another planetary scan, searching out for any potential rises and falls within the planet's landscape and any places where a listening post would be most likely to be found. Though granted the surface of Kaimo VI was mostly jungle and a thick canopy, whilst hadn't stopped them from having a lock on the team, made it easier to decide where listening posts were not going to be located. "Currently running the bio-scanner now, might take a while to filter through the canopies. Along with that, been running a few more background scans to ensure that we've covered it all. Sir."

[Lieutenant Commander Nira Said | Crevasse >- Jungle | Kaimo VI]

The rest of the climb down didn't take that long, and Nira was glad to see rocky banks along the rapids. They finally found a good place to cross, though it took them almost an hour to traverse the crossing, what with the wet and treacherous rocks, and finally, they arrived at the mouth, where it flattened back into jungle. Nira could see that, flat as it was, there was no open space for a beach, thus prompting going back into the foliage.

They made it just in time.

No sooner than Savar, taking up the rear, had stepped in, the clouds burst and rain fell in earnest. Nira was certainly surprised; there wasn't so much rain falling as there was out in the open.

"By Allah," she said. "It's practically raining cats and dogs out there."

"Appropriate," said Savar, "considering that that metaphor for a heavy rain came from a corruption of the Greek Katadoupoi, referring to waterfalls along the Nile. But I digress," he added, looking at the tricorder. "There's three inches of rain pouring, but under the canopy, it's what's known on Earth as a drizzle."

"Well, better than being out in that downpour," said Nira, once again removing her outer uniform and wrapping it around her head to improvise a burkha, mostly as a means to protect from the rain. "At least it'll mean we can keep on going. Let's go."

Of course, as they proceeded, the away team still got wet from the drizzle under the canopy. There were the occasional circumstances when more wet happened, like when a big leaf dumped down water toward the team in passing, dropping onto Zhuk.

Half an hour later, the rain stopped, but it only made the environment even more humid, particularly bringing out varieties of insects, including pests similar to mosquitos. Nira, being used to the desert, was certainly having a worse time of it than the rest of the team. The closest she ever felt in being this miserable was after she woke from the Th'unga mind control when she and Discovery was brought back in time. She was only miserable for a few short hours; as it was then, her security training and her expertise at leading a department, plus the company of Savar, kept her from despairing in this current jungle.

Still keeping in sight of the shore as much as possible, keeping a lookout for potential beach, it wasn't long before Nira came across a particularly thick patch of foliage. With her mek'leth, she cut a path, and her frustration at the elements fueled her strength as she hacked and slashed a path for the team.

A while later, they emerged from the foliage and Nira called for another brief stop to rest. She had to admit, between the sweat and the exercise, she only felt like this after an intense dance workout, but minus the humidity.

She looked up and noticed that Savar had removed the upper part of his uniform entirely. Nira was taken by his tone and muscles before she shook herself back to reality.

"Savar? I think we'll be fine, we'll be resting for the time being," she said, gesturing for Savar to put his uniform back on as he studied his tricorder acutely. As Savar did so, he spoke in a quiet, casual voice, like with the air of commenting on the wildlife, "Don't make any sudden movements, be as casual as possible, but we're being watched. Edge of visual range this way."

He gestured with his eyes. Nira made a casual stretch and looked around like she was admiring the beauty of the jungle.

She could see something alright; in the direction Savar indicated, she noticed something like a gleam. At first she thought it was the sun peeking through the foliage, but she remembered that the sun was in a different direction. Were it not for Savar, she would've assumed it was a second sun. She didn't dwell on the spot too long, it would only let them know she knew. Even with her keen observational skills, she had a hard time making them out, and as such, had to squint, but to keep from looking on that spot so long, she slowly closed her eyes and let out a sigh of relief just for show.

She could barely make out the impressions of humanoid lifeforms; the gleam where they came from, she realized came from their armaments, particularly the spear: the whole thing seemed to be made of metal. Were stone and bronze age, Nira would've figured some kind of bronze...but an entire spear made of bronze, not just the head but also the shaft? Recalling the ancient yet advanced-looking room in the cliff back at the crevasse, she wondered if it was another indication of being more advanced than they looked. She then shook her head; she was growing suspicious inside, almost like she had back when she suspected the Romulans were up to some trick. If the whole spear was made of metal, that was some damn fine craftsmanship.

"I think they look to be two meters high," she said very quietly and ponderingly. "And they're armed. They must be the natives." She looked back at Lahr and Zhuk and approached them, conveying friendliness in her body language, and replied quietly, "Have you noticed them as well?"

She was sure that they both had; Zhuk's ears were bound to be keen, and a Caitian's hearing was rivaled only by Ferengi and El-Aurians. She wondered about Lahr as well, though she wasn't sure what an Andorian's antennae could do, though she heard that Andorian antennae could detect bioelectric signals if they concentrated enough.

Nira could feel the gale from the mouth of the cave; wind was variable, but it was certainly a sign of the coming storm. She looked at Zhuk when he offered to help break up camp.

"Of course, Mister Zhuk," she said. "The faster we can get ready to move, the better."

As she moved back in, she reflected that technically, it wasn't a camp when they were resting, but then again, it was the first time she ever took part in a wilderness-style away mission. As far as she knew, resting was a means of camping down and then resuming would be breaking camp. She looked at Lahr when he broached the question.

"Down," said Nira. "We'll get to the bottom of this...literally," she added, gesturing to outside, "then we follow the rapids, we cross at the best place we'll be able to, get to the mouth and keep following the shoreline until we find a suitable beach. Of course, we'll cover as much as we can before the storm reaches us."

Once the five minutes were up and everybody was ready, Nira said encouragingly, "Okay, onward! Down we go!"

Lahr nodded acknowledgement of the direction of travel the Commander answered. Down seemed a whole lot easier and quicker going than back up the cliffside.  Though after a glance to Chloe, the Andorian wondered if it would be easy enough.  When he tied off Chloe to the safety line, he double checked to be sure that it was secure.  If anyone was going to need this, it would be her.

Zhuk promptly headed over to aid in picking up the camp, placing his rifle aside through the help of its straps. Once everything had been recovered, he made sure to make one final sweep to determine if anything had been left behind, before continuing outside, once his inspection felt sufficient.

"Excuse me, Petty Officer ch'Verret, but was it determined what the waiting room was employed for? Or no such luck thus far?" Zhukdra'shar asked, once the instructions to descend were conveyed by Lieutenant Nira. He proceeded to take point as he had before, tying himself to the cable before continuing his descent in order to follow the rapids. He had some concerns about the available room the away team would have once they reached the bottom, but he hoped it would be enough for them to at least move comfortably and safely towards the mouth of the river.

Skillfully heading down, he reached down after a moment, and untying himself from the rope, he made sure to aid any other member of the away team with safely touching down on dry land, after making a quick exploration of the general premises, making sure it was safe. He remained with his rifle close by, making sure it would be available on a whim if required.

Lahr continued on passing the safely line to the other team members and when he was by the Caitian security officer, Zhuk posed a question.  Lahr glanced back towards the Commander who appeared to be in conversation with her second, the Vulcan.  Lahr knew that briefing of the team should come from her - especially in regards to her own department of Security; but the Andorian, formerly a Sec/Tac crewman, was experienced enough to know that some senior officers didn't think their juniors in security 'had a need to know' so kept them completely in the dark.   Lahr had to wonder if this new Commander was a follower of that philosophy.

Roozh he hoped not.  He had hated it then, and hated it even more now - given that protocol required him to not overstep his role and share things that could be sensitive information.

Turning back to Zhukdra'shar, Lahr gave a shrug.   "Not from what I know.  To me all we found were more questions. "

After that, the team started down the last 30 meter to the base of the cliff.  Thankfully, Lahr's careful safety measures weren't needed and soon the team was following Zhukdra'shar and the Commander through the jungle once more.

Once more throughout the trek, Lahr did his best to help Chloe, who despite the short break in the cliffside waiting room quickly returned to her previous state of physical exhaustion.  The humidity and drizzle only made things worse.  Her tired footsteps slipped on the slick muddied ground and foliage until Chloe had little choice but to cling onto Lahr to help keep her upright.

Chloe thought the torturous trek would never end.  She could finally understand why Lahr hated away team missions.

When they paused for a break, Lahr noticed Chloe nervously scanning the dripping canopy - likely remembering what happened the last time they took a break in the jungle.   But instead of being attacked again by the local fauna, Savar noticed that the local populace was nearby and likely watching them.

This was bad.  In all missions involving pre-warp civilizations, there was the overarching rule of the Prime Directive to not interfere with their development.  Being spotted was a huge interference.   Lahr discreetly moved further into the coverage of the jungle foliage.

The Commander's question to him and Zhadra'shar seemed odd but Lahr took a glance towards where Savar had indicated.   He saw nothing.   "Not at the moment..." he answered  "and maybe we should put a little distance between them and us.  We can't risk them discovering we aren't from here."

The two locals simply observed the away team until they simply vanished from sight. Savar's tricorder still registered them, but the locals were visible one moment and gone the next; likely a skill honed from a lifetime in the dense jungle.

As confronting or pursuing the locals were not part of the away team's mission, they pressed on in an effort to reach the source of the signal the Challenger had detected. One thing the tough going had required was the away team to consume a much higher than normal amount of water to stay hydrated because of the strenuous trek. As a result, the water they had brought with them was very close to being completely expended.

Needing to replenish their water supply, the away team found a large natural basin in the tree tops where water has pooled following the rains. The basin is two hundred meters across, and looks for all the world like a small lake set in the treetops.

The small yellow robot body pivoted to face Ruth as he was addressed. When she'd finished speaking, he answered with this typical aplomb.

"Yes, Commander, I have just received the data from the planet. The symbols are most interesting and after running a comparison to the Federation language database the translations are quite simple. The pictographs represent numbers and are elementary math equations in base eight.

"The progression is 1 + 1 = 2; 1+ 2 = 3; 4 +4 = 8; and 4 + 5 = 11 which is of course 9 in digital. The logical extension of using base eight is the local sentient lifeforms likely have three fingers in addition to an opposable thumb."

[Astrometrics Lab - USS Challenger]

"Ugh, Math!"  chuckled Ruth.  "Definitely not my favourite subject generally but sadly part of Science!  I'll get the info, both regarding the math and your hypothesis on the locals up to the Bridge, the Captain can decide if it's pertinent information.  Thanks Hyperion, you dealt with that far faster than my brain could have ... you'll be rendering me defunct before long!"

She smiled at the AI but she wasn't sure if he could understand facial expressions, but knew he would be receptive to the positive lilt to her voice.

=/\=Astrometrics Lab to Bridge, CSO here... Hyperion has calculated that the data which ch'Verret sent up is a mathematical equation using base of 8, and has deduced that the local populace could have 3 fingers in addition to an opposable thumb. Could be relevant information.
Sigurdsdottir out.  =/\=

"Hey, Hyperion... was that extension regarding the fingers/thumb on the basis that the humanoid type of species like myself, or my good friend Commander Falleg-Tekin, a fellow scientist and a Trill...mostly, have 4 fingers and a thumb and we tend to count in decimal units... i.e. 10, or is this some computer thing.  I grasp binary, but when you start talking base 8 and stuff, I know the basics obviously but it's not my field of Science!"

The CSO had a genuinely interested look on her face but was planning to actually learn something from Hyperion, it was both self interest and also a way of proving to the rest of the team his worth.

"If I were human I believe my response would be "go to hell." If I were human."

Quote from: Nira Said on June 26, 2022, 01:08:29 PM

She was only miserable for a few short hours; as it was then, her security training and her expertise in leading a department, plus the company of Savar, kept her from despairing in this current jungle.

Still keeping in sight of the shore as much as possible, keeping a lookout for the potential beach, it wasn't long before Nira came across a particularly thick patch of foliage.

After their descent from the cliff face, the Caitian was more than relieved to see a set of rocky banks alongside the rapids, that allowed him and the rest of the away team to cross. They still moved slow, however, as the stone was quite wet from the water rapidly coursing right alongside them. After a hard trek, Zhukdrashar was quite happy to reach the jungle with its protective canopy, just in time to avoid the worse of the storm as it poured above. Though fond of water, he really didn't want to end up having to run through the jungle which a wet suit slowing him down.

Taking the lead, he managed to overhear Nira's statement, having to agree with her with a nod, even if she found her comment a little odd. Savar's statement on the source of such a metaphor soon caught his attention next, surprised that the waterfalls around the Nile had degenerated so much as to now mean 'cats and dogs'.

In any case, he was glad to have the Vulcan along. He found it enjoyable that he shared so many interesting facts about the mission and random trivia such as this.

While he thought about this, he received a splash of water that left him absolutely soaked, coming from a large leaf up above. He barely was able to suppress a yowl of surprise and annoyance, as he turned around, both to the party, and to make sure nothing had heard his less than conspicuous reaction. As he did, the absolute miserable look on his face and his dripping wet fur made for an absolutely hilarious sight.

His outlook only proceeded to further sour, however. When the rain stopped, the humidity increased, which brought forth mosquito-like creatures, and glob-like fly insects to bother the party. As a response, Zhuk made sure to swat the larger bugs away, his ears flicking constantly, and tail swishing from side to side to keep himself from getting bitten, or his blood sucked. The constant buzz began to grow quite annoying to his sensitive ears, too, making his grip on his weapon increase. He had to keep cool, he had to keep cool. It wasn't like the time he had to perfectly balance several plates on only one foot, and with sticks. Or when he had been ripped from his family. Twice.

But it was becoming growing pretty infuriating, overall. His eye even began to twitch ever so slightly as he marched on, only stopping with his feet as thick foliage cut them off from continuing. Fortunately, Lieutenant Nira had the right solution, as she carved a path through her mek'leth, which made things much easier for the away team.

And, though he would not admit it, he was glad to have a moment to rest after they had crossed that overgrowth. Taking a moment to drink water and sit down for a moment, he noticed that his outer uniform was soaking wet. He decided to remove it, tying it around his waist before placing back his badge on his chest. He was momentarily interrupted, however, by Savar removing the entirety of his upper uniform, showcasing his upper torso, and the muscles that came with it. He couldn't help but stare in both awe and interest, up until he got properly dressed again.

Then, a noise caught him by surprise. This time, his ears pivoted towards the source, and he soon turned towards it, aiming forward, as he heard the steps moving closer, before stopping. Dropping towards the ground slowly, his green eyes peeled to make out their features. Humanoids, and quite tall, by the looks of it, seemingly armed with a set of bronze-age weaponry. He was certainly impressed with the evolution of the natives within this planet, as they were certainly intimidating.

"I perceive them!" He spoke, in a hushed whisper, as he began to slowly get up, once he had determined that they seemingly did not intend on approaching them, much less seemed to be hostile. "How shalt we proceed? I vote that we showcase ourselves as friendly contacts, lest they misinterpret our presence here. Maybe they could also help us reach our goal..."

Yet, as soon as they had appeared, the pair seemed to vanish into the jungle, almost if by the art of magic. Zhuk was fascinated with such capabilities, eyes wide as he looked around, trying to determine where they had gone. Once he determined that he wouldn't be able to learn their secrets by osmosis, he sighed. Maybe it was for the best that no interaction of note had taken place.

Their walk resumed soon after, though as they tried to locate the signal, the away team soon determined that their provision of water had all but run out. Wanting to correct this issue, they found a large natural basin of clean, drinkable water upon the treetops, which Zhuk was more than eager to head upwards to obtain. As he attempted to pass through a set of ivy leaves, however, he quickly found himself ensnared by tendrils of green.

His arms, hands, legs, and feet soon became bound by the vegetal demon, which resulted in him hissing and yowling, claws extending from their usual relaxed positions to try and cut the offending vines, and ears peeled back and canines extended, as he tried to bite back. He wasn't very successful, however. Thus, he went to step two of his quickly concocted plan. With his tail free, he attempted to slowly move it towards the dangling weapon on his chest, before wrapping itself upon the trigger. He tried to aim at the vines holding his arm, and with little hesitation, he fired at them, hoping it would be enough to free him, and with some luck, the others.

That was, if the vines didn't caught on to his moving tail, and bound it too soon after.

A quick scan found that the water was safe to drink. In order to reach the temporary lake's edge, they had to cross through the curtain of ivy leaves lying across the path. As soon as the away team attempted to brush the tendrils back, the plant responded with blindingly fast tendrils that quickly entangled everyone! As they struggled, more and more tendrils began to ensnare them in a rapidly closing net of vines.

[Lieutenant Commander Nira Said | Jungle >- Treetop Basin | Kaimo VI]

Nira nodded at Lahr and Zhuk. "You both have good points," said Nira quietly. "At least we can maintain how friendly we look, but at the same time, much as we can try to avoid contact with them, I have a feeling they know the jungle better than we do."

She looked back up casually to where they are, but she saw they were gone. When she mentioned it to Savar, he replied, "Not necessarily; sensors still register them. Chances are, it's a form of camouflage."

"Or, more likely," said Nira, "they know the jungle like the back of their hand, as they say on Earth."

"That is more likely," said Savar. "As you have referenced Holmes and Poirot in the past, so I shall reference Tarzan; a lifetime spent in a wild environ such as this would make one excellently familiar with the terrain, but in this case, it's a population of Tarzans."

Nira raised an eyebrow so Vulcanlike that Savar explained, "Well, I had an elective in anthropology at the Academy; reading up the books about Tarzan was...logical."

"Say no more, Imzadi," said Nira with a smile. "I get the picture."

"All the same, Commander," pointed out Blackfeather, "if the natives are watching us, some measure to forget us would be necessary."

"Well, much as I wish we brought a mobile duck blind with us," said Nira, referring to the common tool used to hide from prewarp civilizations while studying them, "chasing or confronting them is not the priority."

"I know, I know," muttered Blackfeather wearily, "but I'm losing faith that we'll find a suitable beach, let alone a clearing to camp before the night falls."

"We don't find a beach by sunset, we'll find a clearing to make camp," promised Nira as she took a swig from her canteen and was alarmed to find that it was a quarter full.

She decided to go around to the team to ask them about their water supply, and when she did so, she discovered it was virtually the same: Their water supply had dwindled fast, owing to the rough going they had. Nira could relate to that.

"I think we're going to need more water," said Nira. "Drinkable water, that is. Savar? Can you scan for water bodies that are drinkable?"

"Aside from the lake?" asked Savar. At Nira's nodding, he made his scan and pointed in a direction...going up.

"You're kidding," said Nira, looking up at the trees again before making an aside glance.

"Cultural upbringing notwithstanding," retorted Savar, "Vulcans do not kid."

"Well, we'll need a way to get up there," said Nira as she studied the treeline. A moment later, her keen observation began noticing something in the direction Savar pointed: a series of unique patterns in the branches. She had seen something like that earlier, and she realized the need for climbing trees could be a necessity. In fact, not only would drinkable water be within reach, but they would have a better means of traversal. Who knows, maybe the natives learned to navigate along the trees in their adaptation to the environment.

"Okay, team," she called, "time to climb some trees. Follow me and Savar."

Nira and Savar began climbing, and sure enough, as Nira could see it, the means of traversal were confirmed: Interconnected branches and pathways.

"This is amazing," said Nira. "Okay, Savar, lead us to water."

Savar followed the tricorder, using this unique means of traversal, and they soon arrived at the water. Nira gasped, in awe of what she saw tucked in the treetops.

"Wow!" she said. "It's like a lake in the trees!"

"Fascinating," said Savar in agreement. "I wouldn't be surprised if it accumulated the rainwater to form a natural reservoir."

"Well, the dual question is," said Nira, "Is it safe to drink, and is there a risk of leaking?"

After a moment, Savar replied, "Yes to the former question, and as to the latter question: Well, we're using this for drinking water, aren't we?" he asked with a shrug. "It's not like we're going to swim in it."

"Sounds tempting, after what we've been through," said Nira, "but taking a swim would be a bad idea, now that I realize it; don't know how deep it is, and we could potentially puncture the lake bottom."

Nira would've gone first, but Zhuk had done so; Nira could sense the eagerness for water radiating off him, but no sooner than Zhuk tried to brush past the curtain of vines before the team than they began wrapping around them. Nira widened her eyes in horror; she was instantly reminded of a nightmare where she and Torra dealt with something similar, some kind of hedge with living vines.

"Hold on, Zhuk!" she shouted. "I'll get you...!"

She drew her mek'leth and tried to cut the vines, but more wrapped around her, binding her. She could see more vines getting at the away team.

"No!" she shouted. "Help! Hel...!"

But she got no further when a vine wrapped around her neck in a momentary choke.

Zhukdra'shar commented back to Lahr once he had obtained his answer, looking visibly disappointed with his ears flattening slightly for a moment, his brow furrowing. He didn't want to discourage the engineer on his duty, so he did his best to be supportive, "I am sure that we are one step closer to unraveling this mystery."

The Caitian's unexpected praise had Lahr's antennae swiveling questioningly towards the felinoid.   What the hell had prompted that? he wondered.  Lahr rarely got praise for his work - except for by Ruth.. For a moment he wondered if the Caitian were being flippant with him, but nah... the guy's tone sounded earnest and supportive.  Lahr chalked it up to a different leadership style.  He gave the Zhuk an up-nod in acknowledgement before continued his task to check the safety line on each of the away team.

[/color]

Although the vines were both relentless and extremely fast, Chief Blackfeather at the rear of the column covering the away team's climb, and warned by Nira's cry for help, was able to respond. He pushed Chloe out of the sweep of the vines and had his rifle leveled in an instant. Realizing attempting to target individual vines would be dangerous to his compatriots, he fired directly into the trunks of the trees.

The phaser rifle's impact on the trees was staggering with tree trunks bursting as the outer bark withered, which allowed the high water content of the softer wood beneath to explode outward as the core of the trees flashed to steam. The effect on the attacking vines was an immediate release and withdrawal, not unlike a humanoid pulling their arms to protect their torso after being stabbed.

As the vines loosened, others in the away team could reach their side arms and their fire added to Blackfeather's and just as quickly as it had begun, the attack was over. There were no serious injuries, but everyone grabbed by the vines had multiple welts from the powerful grip of the mobile lashing they'd sustained.

Now alert to yet another threat the jungles of Kaimo IV presented, the away team was able to replenish their water supply and as compensation, now that they knew of the 'road' network in the trees, continuing on would be much easier than it had been on the ground.

Scans of the area around the planet failed to detect any obvious ion trails or an increase in neutrinos indicative of cloaked ship. However, if said ship was stationary and 'running silent', none of the usual signs would be present. Thus, whether they were alone or not, was still subject to debate.

Sir."

As Buck worked his way through the mountain of data coming in on lifeforms on the planet, the scans were eventually able to isolate the members of the away team, but only when he narrowed the focus of the scan to a mere 500 meter circle. Based on the flood of life signs on the planet, being able to spot a Romulan while confined to such tight parameters was likely to be futile as far as providing useful warning to the away team.

[Lieutenant Commander Nira Said | Treetop Basin | Kaimo VI]

She saw Blackfeather fire down at the tress the vines came from, and Nira realized he was shooting at the trunks. It was proving effective, as she and Zhuk and Lahr were released from the bindings of the vines. She let out a sharp exhale, like she had swum across the Strait of Hormuz...underwater.

"Great," she said, winded. "One more...threat from this jungle...to worry about."

"On the plus side, at least we can enjoy some water," said Savar.

Naturally, Nira had no desire of holding back the team when it came to the water, for she too was parched from the trek. She had drunken two canteen-fulls from the basin before she replenished the canteen completely for later use. Having drunken her fill, and very sure she would be to the basin like an alcoholic on a drinking binge, she studied the branch-entwined "roads."

"Do you think we'll still be in view of the bigger lake if we take these treetop routes, Savar?" asked Nira, in a manner to get an opinion.

"I believe so," said Savar. "We should be close enough that if we climb a tad, we'll be able to see it. If you're suggesting we use these routes, Commander, I would say it's the more logical course of action; we're going at a horribly slow pace so far, and I feel it will be a lot faster to continue in the treetops."

Nira nodded in agreement. Once Savar gave an indication of the best route that was also the closest to the lake, Nira informed the team, "Okay, once Nurse Davies takes a look at what the vines gave us and treats us, we're moving on, team. But we're not continuing at ground level. We'll be traversing through the treetops. Follow me and Savar."

In fact, it's chiefly because of Savar's picking up their location of the lake that they were able to move the way they were. Nira, of course, had seen the welts left by the vines, and as such, she decided to leave it to Nurse Davies to treat them before continuing.

Once Davies treated them to the best of her abilities, the team continued. Nira had to admit, she was a lot more alert now, first because of the flying bear (she was sure Mama Bear could jump them at any given moment, she knew Mama Bears would be more easily provoked to anger than Papa Bears or cubs), and now because of the vines. That alertness, however, was able to help her watch her footing when it came to traversing through the treetops. But aside from the extreme care she often took when she was sure footing would be dangerous, she found that Savar was right: It was a lot easier traversing through the trees than at ground level.

Once in a while, she called for any of the best climbers to go up to a treetop to look at the lake for a beach, often either Blackfeather or Zhuk because of their keen eyes, regardless of difference in keenness; Savar's scanners, while it can detect the lake and determine distance, didn't have satellite images. Nira began considering whether or not to ask Challenger to send out a probe to act as a satellite to keep an eye on the lake and also find a beach flat enough to provide enough room for the team to improvise a boat out of a fallen tree. That was Nira's plan; bring down a tree and float to the lake, camouflaging themselves so that they would look like a part of the big log. Maybe one or two trees of the right size to accommodate the team, three people per tree, though ideally one big enough to accommodate them all, and so avoid detection from the natives. That plan, however, required finding a beach to do it. But more and more she began worrying that every shore of the lake was too rocky or rough to be beach. She worried more and more that they would circumnavigate the whole lake and not find a beach at all.

Ruth said with a grin.  "I don't know if we call your thinking processes a 'brain' or not, but yours is somewhat more logically inclined even given my scientific approach to things.  When we aren't concerned with mission stuff, I'd love to actually have a chat with you and potentially Lahr, about exactly how capable you are and well,.."

The CSO sighed and pulled a strange face before shrugging..."...there, perfect example, my brain fails me when I look for an apt word.  Basically I'm trying to say something along the lines of, I bet most of the tasks we give you are only using a fraction of your capability.  I mean if I told you to multiply 3,34099830.835 by a base of 908.4 you could probably do the calculation in a shorter time than it took me to say!" she grinned and patted Hyperion on a 'shoulder'.

"Either way, I'm glad to have you, not least to do my math for me!  And no, I don't think you're a glorified calculator, but that is a most useful feature!"

Ruth actually felt for the first time since the away team beamed down, a little more relaxed.

"If I were human I believe my response would be "go to hell." If I were human."
