[Bridge - USS Challenger]

"We are clear to maneuver Captain."

Lieutenant T'Kel reported from the Tactical station.

"Very well then. Please convey my thanks ta the repair crews and the command staff of Starbase 157 for takin' such good care of Challenger and us."

"Aye Sir."

"Helm. Make your course 129 mark 25. Warp seven if'n you please."

"Aye Sir. Warp seven it is."

Lieutenant Hector Espada at the helm station replied.

Ian could tell the moment the Challenger went to warp by the shiver in the deck plates and he smiled as the ship just felt... right. Tapping the record function on the command chair, he began his log entry.

"Captain's Log. Stardate 77430.2. After a short stay at Starbase 157, we are currently en route to the Kaimo system, an unexplored portion in the Otorin Sector. Charted by long range sensors in 2234. It consists of nine planets orbitin' a Type A4IV star. Planet IV is Class M, planet V is Class L and VI is Class H.

"Because of continued tension with the more radical splinter factions of the remnants of the Romulan Empire, the Federation is increasin' patrols in case of a confrontation with the renegades. Long range sensors on Starbase 157 have detected a series of faint subspace pulses originatin' from the Kaimo system. As the fourth planet is home ta a pre-industrial humanoid civilization, the signals cannae be from them. The concern is one of the splinter groups has established a listenin' post in Federation space, Starfleet Command has dispatched the Challenger ta investigate.

"On a more personal note, Don Addams has taken a leave of absence. It seems that the command track was nae for him and as we were at Starbase 157 at the same time as the Discovery, he took his battered old hulk of a merchant ship, the Martha off ta find summat. What exactly, I don't ken, but I do wish him well.

"As a result of Don's departure, Lieutenant Nira Said, the chief of security from Discovery has been tapped for promotion ta Lieutenant Commander and selected ta be the First Officer of Challenger. Over the past year, I've nae had the best luck with my Exec, I hope that Nira will change that flight slope. End Log."

[Bridge, Mission Ops Station]

It had been a nice layover at Starbase 157; giving Buck enough time to catch up with everything that had happened between the Challenger and the Discovery when they found themselves interacting with the fae and all creatures of fairytales it seemed. Certainly it would be something to log in his personal log once he had gotten around to making one.

He had positioned himself at his station, handling mission operations on the bridge; taking on all the readings, his face lit up with the screens as data was reeled off.

His lips moved as he quietly confirmed for himself that they had the necessary resources loaded onto the ship, the last of it having been loaded on moments before Tactical confirmed they were clear to maneuver out of the dock. Buck checked it off against the list and looked up. "Resources all replenished, checking on the transporter functionality; wait one." He swiped to one side, calling into the transport beam operators were not suffering from any problems.

He lapsed into silence as he watched the Captain speak on the captain's log. Listening to the developments that had happened and how they had lost their XO but gained one who seemed to have laterally come from the Discovery.

Buck waited a moment. "We're all green here, Hoss. Any crew who requires anything, please speak now or forever hold your peace." He gave a nod, a ghost of an amused smirk crossing his features as he chuckled inwardly at his joke.

First Officer's Log, Stardate 77370.02

This is my first entry as First Officer of the Challenger. It's an honor to have served with Captain Tekin, and it is an equally great honor to serve under Captain Galloway. I'll miss my friends on the Discovery, but I anticipate I will serve equally excellently aboard the Challenger. In any case, at least I have Savar, who is beloved to me. We had planned a long time to have Captain Tekin marry us off, but it looks like it may have to be Captain Galloway. It'll only be until we have at least settled in to this new post, it seems. It will especially be a while before I get used to this vessel.

"Lieutenant Commander Nira Said reporting for duty, sir," said Nira, once she stood at attention before Captain Galloway.

PRESENT DAY

[Lieutenant Commander Nira Said | Bridge | Deck One | USS Challenger NCC-40117-A]

The brief time at Starbase 157 gave Nira enough time to get to know the Challenger. Some of it she was impressed with. Others she wasn't. She had learned from other officers that the Challenger was old, that its class was old. She had even seen one or two other Excelsior-classes dropping by for a brief resupply at the starbase, but unlike the old Excelsiors, especially the one she hitched a ride on from Risa to Discovery, they all seemed to have gotten an overhaul in outer appearance, and she wondered when the time would come for Challenger, its class being based on the Excelsiors, to have one of its own on the outside.

To say Lek wouldn't like this ship would be an understatement, Nira thought to herself, grinning at the thought of Discovery's Ferengi Chief Engineer and how he had a sour opinion of Don's ship Martha. Putting Lek on this ship would be like putting a dog in the middle of a kennel of cats. Or putting a Muslim in a pig pen.

She realized, of course, two things she didn't like about Challenger, besides its look: Its lack of holodisplays she had gotten used to on Discovery, at least since its refit of its interior decoration, consoles, and its slipstream drive, and its shipwide holoemitters. She had meant to make a holographic dog for her quarters on Discovery before going to the T'Karr Nebula, but now it wouldn't seem likely.

She looked over at the Science section and smiled there. Savar was one of the three Science officers there. Of course, given it was on the right side of the bridge, and also on the Captain's left, it meant Nira would kind of look past Captain Galloway when she was looking at Savar, but at least she had focus on everything else on the bridge. She was also expecting to see Commander Sigurdsdottir - Ruth - on one of the three chairs, too.

She looked back at Tactical though she also was looking past the station to where her new office was. She had to admit, there wasn't much time to get to know her own office, but she liked how small it was; it reminded her of her old Security office on Discovery. She then looked back at Lieutenant T'Kel, the Vulcan Sec/Tac Chief. The first department she got a look at was, naturally, Security, and she was impressed with T'Kel and another officer, Mister Blackfeather.

She was roused back to reality by Captain Galloway's call to get underway. She looked at the former first officer of the Discovery, one whom she served with and even engaged the Borg with at one point. She let in a ghost of a shrug as she looked back out at the viewscreen from her chair; she remembered how much of a skilled flier he was, especially from joining him and Don on the old Flying Tigers holoprogram. He wouldn't care how old a ship is, she thought to herself. As long as it flies, he's fine with it.

She had certainly gotten to know Captain Tekin a lot more than Captain Galloway, and she could see a definite difference between the two: In a nutshell, Tekin was a scientist and Galloway was a flyboy.

She felt the shiver in the deck plates as Challenger went to warp. She cringed a tad; the ship was definitely old for her to feel that. She could almost imagine hearing creaking as the ship flew, like a wooden galleon...or the creaking from the time loop, when she first came on Discovery with Galloway.

As she listened to Captain Galloway make his log entry, Nira kept her silence. She heard about radical splinter groups, and she knew about one in particular: the Tal Shiar. She felt a twinge of relief, in a way; Challenger was still in Romulan space, or the remnants of the old Star Empire. She wondered if it meant the possibility of meeting one or two friends made by the crew of the Discovery, like Commander Ralik. But she figured the Challenger had a few Romulans friends as well.

She raised an eyebrow at mention of how Challenger seemed to have trouble with its executive officers in the past year. Well...she felt she could be on the ship for a while, to get to know it as an exec, and to get used to being an exec herself.

Once the Captain was done with his log, Nira posed the question: "Does the ship normally do that? That tad bit of a shiver? I don't think I recall feeling that on Discovery, Captain."

[Bridge - USS Challenger]

Ian smiled at Nira's comment about Challenger's idiosyncrasies. It was clear she wasn't a pilot, but he wouldn't hold that against her. She had other traits that were exceptional and that was why she was here.

"Aye Lass she does. All ships sing ta you if'n you ken how ta listen. There's no gettin' around she's an old design. The basic Excelsior design was launched a hundred and fifteen years ago, but our girl is eighty-three years old. Nothing like the Prometheus of course, but dinna let that think she can't hold her own. Since her upgrade ta Trailblazer-Class, she may nae be able ta multi-vector, but she's can both dish it an take it.

"She was actually the first ship in the fleet ta sport the point of impact shields, the creation of that genius of an engineer the Discovery snagged from us, Lek. We've faced off against a Norexan-Class Warbird and put a dent in their hat they'll nae be forgettin' any time soon.

"So, yes, she has her ways, but I can tell how she's doin' just by the vibration through the deck plates. You may want ta spend some time with our Chief Engineer Dashlish Tharn, she'll get you up ta speed about our girl. Just remember she's a Tellerite and nae so friendly as me. Even though she's nae Lek, I wouldn't have anyone else lookin' after our home besides Dashlish."

Nira took in Ian's...Captain Galloway's words. Her eyes widened in amazement as he described how tough the class of ship was.

"I think I see your point, Captain," she said with a smile. "Sounds like this ship's class and the Excelsior class sound tough despite age. I can imagine that's why they still hold up even today, and especially during the Dominion War. And I'll definitely bear in mind to see Chief Engineer Tharn...and I'll bear in mind her behavior as well, I don't think I've seen a Tellarite since the Academy."

She definitely believed the Captain, inwardly; Tellarites were known for their tempers. Of course, the only bad-tempered person she knew as Lek, and she could easily imagine a grumpy contest between the two.

With the arrival of Challenger's new XO - one Nira Said, a Betazoid, came a new system of organizing departments.  Originally named Chief Robotist as part of the Operations department, now Lahr was assigned to Engineering, in the Robotics division.

Lahr was not happy about the transfer.  Where once he'd been at the forefront of the Bridge, involved in everything; now he was little more than a peon kept out of sight in the bowels of the ship.  How Lek ever could stand to be down here day after day was mystery to Lahr.  Lahr had barely been down here two days, setting up his Robotics Lab - a tiny out of way room in the Engineering section, which Lahr sourly named 'The Broom Closet' - that he was to dedicate to monitoring Hyperion.

Lahr missed the Astrometrics lab... at that place had view.  But with Hyperion having a body now, it had been unilaterally decided by those higher than himself that it was best to maintain Hyperion with the rest of the machinery... down in Engineering.    Lahr missed the Bridge... even more so because now he couldn't sneak glances towards Ruth.

On top of that, as if things weren't bad enough,  Lahr was certain his new Department Head had it out for him.  He supposed the Tellerite hadn't appreciated his rather open and colorful opinion of his transfer.  Lahr would have thought if anyone would understand about complaints and insults it would be the Tellerite.   But he supposed like Lek, even she got protective of her 'precious engines' and her Department as a whole.

Yeah, Lahr wasn't a favorite among the engineers at the moment.

Worst of all, when he wasn't working with Hyperion, the Andorian was expected to assist with regular engineering duties.  Lahr was the first to admit he wasn't much of an engineer.  This assignment was gonna be Hellish.  As one might expect, Lahr's antennae were droopy.

Lahr looked over towards Hyperion, who was being measured for an external diagnostic alcove - the idea being adapted from a Borg design.  Lahr's glance was a bit bitter.  The robot would likely get to visit the Bridge more often than he would now.

"Alright, there you go.  All done." Lahr stated as he released the taxi yellow AI from the alcove.  "Go free my friend, escape while you can."

Ruth sat labouring over some reports she had to sign off on PADDs, various transfers had come in and out at Starbase 157, notably the new XO.  She had been sad to see Don leave but pleased that Nira got her chance at command.  Ruth was happy where she was but, this week at least she had a mountain of 'paper' work to complete and thus it was head down, in her office and 'babysitting' some new folk in restructuring of some departments that nominally came under the heading of 'Science'.

One thing she still wasn't certain about was Robotics where Lahr was stationed.  Now far as she knew AI was Scientific, but it involved wires and circuit boards and such so for that reason she grudgingly admitted that it was also the domain of Engineering and she wasn't about to argue with Dashlish on that one.  As a Tellarite she could be rather outspoken.  Come to think of it so would Lek have been.  Maybe it was just a trait of Chief Engineers.

As she felt the familiar shiver as the ship went to warp she smiled and rubbed her hand on the wall of her office.  "It's ok old girl, I'm not complaining about you... you've kept us alive and continue to do so... just prove your worth again to the new incumbents, they'll soon love you as much as Ian and I do!"

Stretching her arms as far as they'd go above her head, then pinching the bridge of her nose while scrunching her eyes shut and rolling her neck, she decided she needed a break and went in search of a replicator that wasn't the one in her office... the object being to stretch her legs too.

Stopping by the Cetacean Labs, as she always found that the dolphins calmed her, she pondered an idea and took it upon herself to wander to Engineering and specifically the Robotics Lab.  While it was an excuse to see Lahr, she also had a genuine question.

[Engineering - Robotics Lab]

Ruth dodged as a yellow taxi AI came out of the space called 'The Broom Closet' by those who worked there - namely Lahr - and those that knew it well. She heard what Lahr had said and muttered under her breath "Be grateful he didn't paint you half blue and half white and stick some grubby brownish plaid on you!"

"Knock, knock... " she said daring Lahr to make a joke based on what they'd gone thru in the Labyrinth.

"So this is where they have you hiding nowadays... I'd say wasted talent but it's not, just you don't know how good you are.  Now I have an actual question if Lt. Tharn can spare you for 20 mins or so...because it's not that easy to explain since I'm not an engineer I'll have to describe it in layman terms and you and whomever can then put it into geekspeak... deal?!"

Hyperion stepped out of his charging alcove pausing to cant his head at Lahr's comments before replying in a voice he hadn't heard the AI use before. It was deeper with an accent that defied placing.

"Lahr, I have had much time to examine the Starfleet medical database on humanoid behavior and have constructed an algorithm that interprets voice inflection, tone, pitch, timbre, along with facial expressions and sensor readings of temperature. At this moment, the results of the algorithm predict with a 92% certainty that you are unhappy. As I am unaware of saying or doing anything to cause this state, it is therefore, easy to deduce that some outside influence has disrupted your typical jovial demeanor. Is there anything I can to alter your mood in a positive direction?"

Tharn can spare you for 20 mins or so...because it's not that easy to explain since I'm not an engineer I'll have to describe it in layman terms and you and whomever can then put it into geekspeak... deal?!"

When Ruth entered, Hyperion paused for several seconds before continuing.

"Commander Sigurdsdottir. It is pleasing to see you. Perhaps I can assist with this complicated question you have. I am familiar with most scientific and engineering matters and believe I would be most useful in your endeavor. I do know, based on Lahr's spike in temperature, he is pleased to see you and it is highly likely your presence will increase his mood indicators to return to baseline."

[Ensign Zhukdra'shar Mrekrerhas | USS Challenger | Bridge]

As his first proper assignment upon the USS Challenger, Zhukdra'shar Mrekrerhas, Caitian Security Ensign for the Federation, was currently learning through experience within the bridge. Found just behind Lieutenant T'Kel, his superior, he was avidly gazing at the tactical console, making sure to take in every detail as best as he could. His ears were positioned towards both the Lieutenant and the console, though they seemed ready to pivot towards the Captain in case anything else occurred, The small stay at Starbase 157 had allowed him to familiarize himself better with the ship, but he still had much to learn.

Whatever had happened on his previous assignment was a blur, though he was pretty sure he had not been on the ship. Still, he had a feeling that something fantastical had transpired recently. He remembered a kind Grazerite woman dressed in fine clothes that smiled at him, and a fae telling him he could recognize a 'Summer's Night Dream'. Also, a spooky King that spoke of rekindling a bonfire invaluable to the fae. Or something like that.

He chastised himself internally as he momentarily lost track of the console, deep in thought. It vexed him though, and he wanted answers as to why he had such fuzzy memoirs. Not the time and place, though. It didn't help that the ship's soft hum as it entered warp was oddly relaxing to him. He was used to noise and movement, as the Orion ships he once was transported in had proven much rockier than the much sleeker ships of the Federation. And he had the need to adapt to them.

Of course, he couldn't say that he wanted to be back in one...

Oh, there he was again. Focus, Zhuk, focus.

"I appreciate the chance of being allowed to obtain first-hand experience in such a manner, by the by, Lieutenant T'Kel" Came the comment from Zhukdra'shar, perhaps a little suddenly. Maybe keeping a conversation with a logical and measure Vulcan would aid him on remaining cool himself. He had to be ready in case danger appeared, after all.

Hyperion's new voice and accent was a bit of surprise to Lahr, but it only highlighted to the Andorian that the AI's programming wasn't static. The AI was constantly learning... improving... evolving.

That Hyperion recognized that Lahr was upset and asked how it might help was a bit of a milestone.  Previously, Hyperion might have recognized Lahr's poor mood, but it would merely accept it as fact.  It would not have considered that a happy mood would be preferred... or that it was capable of influencing to a more positive mood through its actions.

Fortunately for Lahr, Hyperion's assessment while accurate didn't give the AI the understanding quite yet as to what it was that had the Andorian upset.   "No, sorry - there ain't really anything that can be done.  I just got to learn to adapt to a less than ideal situation."

But that was easier said than done... at least until Ruth arrived.   His antennae lifted almost immediately.  Her presence always made his day better.   A fact that Hyperion seemed to be aware of as well.

As with all things involving Ruth, she didn't come out and state plainly what she needed.. instead she danced around the topic; her words suggesting for him to get Lieutenant Commander Tharn's okay first for him to assist her.   Lahr really didn't want to waste his and Ruth's time with asking permission (and risk the Tellerite telling him no out of spite) so Lahr decided to avoid asking altogether.

"Deal. Where to?" he asked as he picked up his PADD, glancing at his task list.  Nothing seemed critical or unequivocally needing to be done in the Broom Closet.

"Hey Hyperion, it says here I need to test and calibrate your sensors today.  Let's do that with some external stimuli.  We can play 'I SPY' along the way as a start.  As we walk with Commander Siggurdsdottir, I want you to locate, measure, and identify all items that match the description of what I claim to have spied.  You will then send to my PADD, one at a time, your 'best guess' as to what you think I have 'spied'.  You get three guesses before the next spied item.  Understand the rules?"

Lahr waited for an affirmative before he motioned with a grin for Ruth to precede him and Hyperion out of the Broom Closet.  Then after a moment of pointedly looking around for a specific object, the Andorian turned to the robotic AI.  "I spy... something yellow."

Once Hyperion was occupied with his assigned task, Lahr divided his attention, in part keeping an eye on Hyperion's 'guesses' which would be displayed on his PADD, and Ruth.

"So what's this idea of yours?"

Logic would dictate you wish to distract me from your conversation with Commander Sigursdottir. Rather than engaging in this task, I will ensure the calibration of my sensors via a self diagnostic and proceed to Astrometrics to assist with scanning the Kaimo system."

Hyperion then trundled off without another word.

Ian Galloway

[Lieutenant Commander Nira Said | Bridge | Deck One | USS Challenger NCC-40117-A]

[Bridge - USS Challenger]

With the course laid in and the ship humming along at warp seven, there was no longer a reason for Ian to be on the bridge, especially with the mound of datawork he had waiting for him, thus he stood and said.

"Nira, you have the bridge, try ta nae scratch the paint. I will be in my ready room."

Ian then entered his office and began to tuck into the various reports and evaluations awaiting his attention.

[Bridge - Tactical Station - USS Challenger]

In her typically formal manner of speaking, T'Kel said.

"It is only logical that you be fully familiar with the ship's main tactical station Ensign. It is only prudent to be prepared for all contingencies regardless of your current rank and experience. More senior officers are naturally more likely to take over at Tactical than you, but with the uncertainty of casualty distribution, the normal chain of command could be interrupted and you could find yourself manning this station. It is therefore incumbent on me to insure you are prepared to take on that responsibility."

Buck McNair

[Bridge | USS Challenger]

Buck glanced around the bridge, occasionally but frequently. He wanted to learn how the senior leaders led their teams, how they interacted with one another as he proceeded to run tests and analytics on operating systems all over the ship. The engineers on 157 seemed to be rather decent people; they all chipped in and the conversations he had with them in the canteen was something to listen to and to take on board, of course even with that being the case, he could not rely on it being 100 percent up to scratch.

He ran his fingers over the screen, allowing himself to take in the status of the various components of the Challenger. There had been some upgrades according to the manifest and he had to make sure that they all had synced and aligned themselves with the ship. Crunching numbers hadn't been something he had a particular astounding skill in but he was good enough to see that they were all seeing green and gave a small half-smile as he glanced to the view screen of space passing them by.

As Hyperion's face was incapable of expression, it was impossible to know what he was thinking even when he canted his head, which he was not doing at the moment.

"Commander. My primary function aboard the ship is astrometrics, which is clearly part of the science department. I've been assigned to Engineering mainly for accountability and I suppose should I sustain damage, that engineering personnel would have a better chance of repairing me than the Medical department, thus from an efficiency point of view, my assignment to Engineering is logical.

"However, as my normal duty station is Astrometrics, I must therefore, in response to your query regarding my 'timetable of when Hyperion is going to be in anything Scientific' is now as I am in the process of reporting to Astrometrics as soon as I am dismissed.

"As Lieutenant Commander Tharn is also perplexed about my presence, she has given me full autonomy to work in Astrometrics whenever I chose. At least that is how I interpret her 'I don't care what it does as long as it stays out of my way' comment.

"Thus, unless you have anything else for me Commander, am I free to depart for my assigned place of duty?"
