[Starbase 84 - USS Challenger]

From the bridge, Ian watched as the docking clamps and umbilicals from the starbase connected to the Challenger. Once the process was complete, most of the ship's internal power was placed in standby mode with the exception of the fusion generators. Life support and power mostly came from the starbase, which would give the engineering department time to conduct critical maintenance that couldn't happen while her engines were active.

Most of the crew had already departed to enjoy much needed leave and the facilities that the starbase offered. It had been nine days since the boarding action on the freighter SS Heidi Schwebach. Most sentient beings were very resilient and Starfleet personnel went through a very thorough screening process to ensure they were even more resilient than most beings. While the trip from Beta Lankal had been somber, the prospect of shore leave, even if on a starbase was a powerful incentive for recovery and the vast majority of the crew were now well on the road to recovery. At least that's what Counselor Mills had reported on the fitness of the crew.

Ian and Jess had each gone through their own trauma because of the mission. Jess had lost a patient after beyond heroic measures to keep him alive. Most doctors, especially the good ones, took the loss of a patient personally, as if it was an affront to their competency. Ian's trauma to what happened on the freighter wasn't all that different than what Jess experienced. Most of his darker thoughts revolved around the concepts of 'how did I let this happen' and 'what could I have done differently.'

As Captain, Ian knew deeply that he was responsible for everything each member of the crew did or didn't do. Even though he wasn't on board the Schwebach when Ensign Silverback ignored the advice of the many senior NCOs sent with him for the express purpose of helping him make good decisions, Silverback's suicidal charge into the cargo bay had cost eighteen lives and the ensign's failings became Ian's failings. Whether it was giving Silverback too much responsibility too soon or failing to ensure he had the proper training and temperament for an assignment aboard a starship, Ian felt he had let the ensign and himself down. It was that melancholy that kept Ian on the bridge as the rest of the crew departed for the starbase. Ian moved to the command chair and began his log.

"Captain's Log, Stardate 76496.8. The Challenger has docked at Starbase 84 for general maintenance, shore leave, and for the court martial of Ensign Silverback. It is a difficult thing ta have ta stand in judgement of another. I've been in contact with Starfleet Command as well as the Judge Advocate General's office and now know the other two captains that will form the tribunal. One is a welcome reunion with Captain Tekin Nevir from USS Discovery. The other is with Captain Kirok of Katra Station, a Vulcan I have not personally met before. As Kirok has the farthest to travel, we will convene as soon as he arrives. The sooner this unpleasant business is over, the sooner we can all return to more enjoyable assignments. End log."

Lieutenant jg Lagar
[Lagar's Junior Officer's Quarters - Deck 5 - USS Challenger]

Still aboard the Challenger, Lagar straightened the dress uniform affixed to his torso, pulling the bottom portion of the fabric down to ensure it fell flat below his neck. As with his other uniforms, it was a modified creation of the fabricators, suited to fit the Phylosian physiology. His dress uniform was a little crisper, more formal, and were he a breathing organism, restrictive around his neck. His PADD was loaded with Challenger reports, logs, and legal references that he felt would be needed for what lay ahead, but the last hour had been spent in meditation. The Phylosian had volunteered to support his crewmate, his fellow living being, Silverback; he would serve in whatever capacity the upcoming court martial set for him, and he would do so to the best of his ability. All the same, he felt a tightening twist of worry, that the role he would be filling would strain his relationship with the rest of the people of the Challenger.

Would his crewmates understand why he was willing to do this? Was it their preference that Silverback be left on his own, abandoned to his own counsel? By taking on this role, would Lagar be condemned in the court of public opinion? At the end of his session, he decided that their feelings were their own to command. Lagar would stand with his crewmate, no matter what his crimes or punishments might be.

There was a man Lagar needed to speak to first. Words had to be shared between them before this began, and ended"¦

The doors of the starboard turbolift opened to permit the formally-dressed Lagar onto the Bridge. The Phylosian's eyes turned directly to his Captain, the man seated in the command chair after having completed his Captain's log. Captain Galloway would see that all of Lagar's limbs were in full use and un-tied, having recovered from the harrowing day of medical and surgical work in the wake of the 'Shwebach Incident'. The Phylosian gave no hints as to his intent on the Bridge with any body language, but his respectful and slow approach to the command chair suggested he meant to speak to his Captain.

"Captain Galloway." he said. "May I have a moment of your time, Sir?"

[USS Challenger - Bridge]

After docking the Challenger to the docking magnetic clamps Shazham had signed the console on standby and he turned to look at the Captain.

"œCaptain, I know I brought this up more than once. I am here if you need me. It can be on record off record if you need to talk and sort things out," he offered to the Captain.

The incident of Silverback. The Starfleet crew had started to call it. The sad thing was this was going to stain Starfleet with diplomacy missions and fighting to continue treaties among other fractions in space.

Yes. Captain Ian Galloway was going to be the one who gets the harsh stain on his record as Silverback. The crew would have it on their record. This means anyone who wanted to rise in leadership of any department in Starfleet will have this stain on them. Knowing politics always used this as a kick or a punch maneuver to win votes or favors. Even the crew of Enterprise had marked Kirk. That was how it was. That is why Starfleet tries to train at the academy or other training to make you more prepared.

"Counselor." the Phylosian said in polite reply. He been aware of the Betazoid counselor's work over the last week, between his therapeutic efforts with the crew, and his time at the helm. He was building a respect for the man, though Lagar's own hesitations about telepathy remained.

Nearer to the Captain now, the Phylosian moved his seven tendrils behind his back. The seven rope-like appendages, each split into twinned 'fingers' at the ends, curled around each other like many hands clasping. "I wanted you to know, Captain, that I volunteered to assist Ensign Silverback in a legal capacity during our time on leave here at this Starbase. I'm not yet aware of the extent to which I will be directly involved in the coming court martial, whether I will be his sole defender, or only there to provide advice to him." He halted there, holding any further words back, needing to know his Captain's reaction to this part of the news. There was more to say, but Lagar felt it was prudent to make these moves in careful, respectful steps.

Ian felt his eyebrows rise at Lagar's statement and wondered how that association could have started, but figured it must have been related to Silverback's stay in sickbay prior to being transferred to the brig.

"That is uncommonly decent of you Lieutenant. How involved you will be in the Ensign's defense depends of if'n he chooses ta have an actual attorney present. The defendant gets ta select his legal team which can consist of JAG provided or civilian lawyers, a representative, such as yourself, or representin' himself.

"I must inform you that the evidence against Silverback is irrefutable, the only unresolved matter is the severity of his sentence. If'n you still wish ta take on this role, I certainly support you in doin' so."

After a beat, he continued. "As you may know Sir, those who provide a legal defense aren't necessarily making that defense as an individual, but instead as a servant of their defendant. Depending on how this event plays out, as I perform my duties..." The color of his eyes faded, the golden circles drawing back to dots for a moment. His speech began to include odd halts. There was no telling whether they were translation errors, or a sign of the Phylosian's hesitation."I may make points or ask questions that could cause an... emotional response. I want you to know that I regret... any difficulties that may arise between us... as people... as a result of my choice to help Ensign Silverback."

If such permission is given, Lagar then makes his way to Starbase 84 to seek Ensign Silverback, who was surely brought onto the Starbase by now. He'd need to see what the mugato would want for a legal team, as Captain Galloway had intimated.

"Permission granted Lieutenant."

Ian replied with some wistfulness and watched Lagar leave the bridge. With the exception of Tharn's engineers, the rest of the crew had already departed the ship. Ian had given the Tellerite strict orders to ensure that each of her people got at least 48 hours on the Starbase. Even Silverback had been transported to the brig on the Starbase 84.

Although he wasn't in a sociable mood, he'd promised to meet Jess and several other members of the medical department for dinner. He was glad Jess was forcing him into social situations. He might otherwise find a bottle or two of single malt and go down a very dark road.

Ian stood, looked around the bridge, then tapped his combadge.

"Computer. Point ta point transport ta the Suriya Thai Restaurant on Starbase 84."

The computer beeped in acknowledgement and Ian found himself on the bustling promenade and heading in Jess' direction.

Kirok could see Starbase 84 threw the yacht window.  His presence had been requested to sit in on a court-martial.  Possibly his least favorite thing in the world, but duty over personal preferences always.

"It won't bee long now, Dillon.  Just let me find out about our accommodations.  And when we need to be at our first appointment" he said to his canine companion.

Then he opened a channel to the station.  -//This is Captain Kirok.  Requesting permission to land.  And some information about my lodging arrangements, if you please\\- he said.

Starbase 84 - Brig

Though his cage onboard the Challenger was spacious, the one aboard the Starbase even more so.  At least he had a view such as it was.  He sat there contemplating the meaning of his existence and how he trashed anyway of continuing along this journey, but the path ahead of him will soon fork and he had no say in where it goes.  But the destination will always be within.  Then he noticed the Phylosian come stalking into the room and his day somewhat brightened up.  Such a event to happen to allow him a friend even if it was temporary, a friend non the less.

Through hazy eyes he thought he saw his plant friend come in but as his eyes cleared it was someone he had not seen before.  Another shaman perhaps?, as he heard the noise coming from his mouth he crooked his head slightly at the word 'counselor', yet another word used by this tribe he was not aware of the meaning.  "Im in a cage for the beast and that is all you see is a beast in a cage.  Am I to be a spectacle before becoming one with the shadowlands?" Silver asked politely yet mystically.

Lisa still didn't quite feel the same after the events of the last mission. During the surgeries, she had actually returned after releasing her patient to Nathan. She had saved the man in her care, but Jess hadn't. The two of them had since talked, and she felt closer to the other woman now. But her own loss of composure still haunted her. She never wanted it to happen again. She talked to Gemma about it and started meditating, (when she could remember) but she still didn't know if she felt comfortable doing anything...important, yet. Once she'd found out more about Silverback, she realized that he had effectively put a halt on the ship's "regular" duty for the time being. Perhaps that would give her more time to get back to normal. And maybe, but not likely, she'd talk to or even see Kyle.

She had just finished her morning routine, but found that she wanted to take just a little more time to sip a cup of tea and read a book.
