Captain's log: Stardate 79008.10

Captain's Log, now that's a weird thing to say.  Commander's log?   I'm not technically a captain, yet technically I am. On my promotion to Commander, I have been given command of this Station orbiting this desert planet on the outer borders of the Romulan Neutral Zone, over the planet Ciden IV. It's pretty out there on the far borders of "œcivilized space".  Like, middle of nowhere out there.  Part of me still wonders if this  posting is some kind of backhanded compliment after the Frontier Day mess, but orders are orders, I suppose.  I'm going to take this as a chance  to make a difference here. We're here to create a more stable Federation presence for the colonists of the New Jericho Colonies and try to promote peace with the Romulan refugees who live here while we're at it. A pretty tall order, but I think we can handle it.  Of course, that means we've gotta make sure this station is up to spec first. We're not the first people who've occupied this place, after all"¦"œ

""""""""""""""""""""""-

[Outpost Solare, Promenade]

The Station had seen better days, for certain. As part of her briefing, she had looked at the specs of the station, and she was pretty certain that this station was at least as old as she was. But it was still running, and it was part of her job to "œspruce up" the place, as it were. She looked around at the promenade, giving a grin and a wave to those working around her.  It was a pretty mad dash to get this place in order, but  so far, it seemed to be going along pretty well, all things considered.  They'd find out once they did the full shakedown later today to be sure.

While it would be impossible as the station grew to really know everyone, she wanted to at least try to get to know the people she was working with. Or at least have them be able to recognize her.

Was it overcompensating? Who knew? She might have to talk with the new Counselor who was coming onboard about that, but it was a start.

We're in Starfleet here. Weird is part of the job description.

First Officer's Log, Stardate 79008.10.

After six months on the Revenant and a bit of time for shore leave, we have been reassigned. I was a little surprised, at least at first, when I had been offered to be First Officer under Kinley Garrison as she is assigned as Commanding Officer of the outpost we're assigned to, given the six months when I was commanding officer and Kinley was my First Officer. However, I suddenly remembered seeing on Kinley's personnel file that she had longer time as a First Officer than I had, and therefore, she had more command experience.

Given that we are both Commanders, I figure that while I answer to Kinley, we would be, in a way, in a situation similar to when the Enterprise, NCC-1701-A, was under command of two captains, James Kirk after his demotion from Admiral, and Spock when he long held his standing as Captain Spock. We co-command Outpost Solaere together. In any case, I often feel Kinley still hurts after Frontier Day, given how she has been assimilated twice, the second time most recently, and as such, I will be glad to help her as she assumes command.

Solaere...I've worked with Romulans long enough to know some of their language. Solaere is the Romulan word for "help," or "aid." I realize there's a reason why Starfleet chose that word to name - or rename - the outpost. We're effectively doing what Benjamin Sisko did when he first came to Deep Space Nine.

From our briefing from Admirals Gillespie and Ridladr, however, humanitarian aid won't be the only priority while we're here in the Ciden System. There has been a sense of lawlessness since the destruction of the Romulan system, particularly in the former Romulan Neutral Zone. It's bound to have doubled or tripled since April, given how long Earth was cut off from the rest of the Federation, but that's just me.

Given from what I heard about what's going on in the Ciden System, I'm certainly expecting conditions will be dangerous, given the behavior of the colonists and their relationship with the Romulan refugees, especially given how close we are to the old seat of the Romulan Star Empire. In a way, I'm worried about the situation.

[Commander Nira Said | Promenade | Deck Ten | Outpost Solaere]

Nira was staring out the window of the Promenade. Looking at Ciden IV below was the only thing that kept her from scowling at the layout when she came into Outpost Solaere, given the state of the station. She was amazed by the planet below in particular.

Suffice to say, the moment she saw the planet, she felt right at home.

Having grown up in desert, Nira was at home at a desert, despite how tropical the Betazoid homeworld is. And in point of fact, she had been informed that before Hobus, Ciden IV was a paradise. Nira could tell how much of an impact Hobus had on it. Half the planet was pockmarked, and from what was heard, Ciden IV was one of the lucky planets in the system.

Nira then turned back to the Promenade. Four decks worth, and it looked like a ghost town. One would be hard pressed to find something more desolate. Not even Starbase Eighty with its status as a crap hole could match the outpost that had been abandoned for almost three decades. Nira scowled at how soon the refit had started. Whatever Work Bees there were were swarming about, doing the work of thrice the amount of Work Bees it would normally take. And Nira had to admit, the amount of Engineering personnel came a close second to the Revenant. What engineering staff was there when they arrived didn't even make the single digits.

Well. The planet below will wait. Now is the time to get to know the facility. At least some close friends, some she had made as recently as serving on the Revenant, others she had known for longer. For now, aside from the desert look of Ciden IV, it was her best comfort.

She had noticed a few particular faces herself as she reviewed the crew roster on her PADD. She noticed the Security Chief, Lieutenant Commander Rabolon, the giant Chelon from the Rigel system, acclimating to his Security Office, despite how he seemed to take up space. Then she saw Kinley and smiled.

"Hello, Commander," she said. "What do you think of this place so far?"

JB walked into Deck 10. Ready. Ready For What? Unknown. He also knew Newly Promoted Garrison was his CO. Good, She deserved a Command, As did Nira. He walked in and sat in the corner drinking only water. He had already got a list of items to go through when the first shift started and oh boy was it long. He first wanted to see what He had in the Amory, And see what he had at his disposal, and also see what the pirates were like in this sector, and Also see what smugglers were see the the most around here.

Olivia and Katie had just arrived and were on their way to meet JB. The Station is bigger than I had thought, Plus it has holodecks..That should keep Katie entertained. As they walked into the Promenade, Olivia found JB in the corner and moved with Katie in the front, Helping her Navigate the crowd in the Promenade. Finally she made it. "Daddy!" Katie yelled as she saw JB, she quickly took off pushing through the crowd to her Father who scooped her up in a hug.

"Hows My Little Girl?....How was the Ride?" JB asked as he put Katie down in the booth. Olivia sat down across from them. "Good, I really enjoyed the ride, Wish we could be on a Ship instead of here. But whatever" The tone Katie had with whatever made Olivia smirk and think.  Well she has my sass Alright. Olivia ordered a Coke, and Katie wanted some type of Fruit punch drink she had grown to like. JB went ahead and ordered some appetizers.Something simple, Or least thats what he thought, Garlic bread, With cheese sauce, Mozzarella sticks, and some fried Pickles that Olivia Adored.

Dr Taja Grippen

#3

[Outpost Solaere, Deck XIV, CMO Office]

Taja sat in the brand new desk chair, the top of the line in Starfleet ergonomic furniture. Adaptive padding, back support and heatpads attuned to her body's core functions via live link. The chair would adapt, move, mould to her every requirement. In the eight months since the fateful events of Frontier Day, Taja had spent most of that time back on Risa to take the lead on her brother Malik's rehabilitation from the severe wounds he had suffered thanks to the Borg/Changeling alliance. It had been a long and often painful process, but her brother was now back in active service aboard the USS Discovery. For Taja, the opportunity had arisen for her to take up a Chief Medical Officer's position on some backwater outpost near the Romulan border. Until the transfer orders came through, Taja had never even heard of Outpost Solaere and knew next to nothing about the Romulan dynamics of the region.

And so the Risan had spent every waking moment reading up on all the Starfleet reports, mission logs and intelligence she could find on the Tarod Sector and Ciden system that she now found herself in. It would seem their primary mission here was one of peace keepers and to develop the station into a trade hub. A tall order and something totally different to life aboard a starship, but it was something that Starfleet had been successful with in the past most famously at Deep Space Nine.

Her new work area was pretty impressive to. Deck 14 was almost exclusively given up to the medical department. Consisting of a Surgical Suite, Physical Therapy, Isolation Rooms, Biohazard ICU, Main Patient Ward, Critical Care, Triage Area, CMO's Office, ICU, Reception Area, Trauma Stasis Unit, Sickbay Computer, Null-Grav Observation, Medical Crew Quarters and the Morgue. This station was undergoing a retrofit to the latest in Starfleet technology for these areas and the equipment and facilities would eventually be top spec, but currently a lot of the stuff available to them was neglected and outdated. It was pretty much a dream assignment for a Chief Medical Officer to find herself in.

There had even been a new recruit assigned to the department, the earthling Ensign Brooks. Taja looked up through her small office's window to see various personnel load up and install the new medical systems. One of the perks of this office was her own personal replicator, which she now used to brew up a cup of 'Go-Juice', a blend of pure caffeine, sugar and other unnamed stimulants. A beverage she had been introduced to by the little Onlie, Commander Mackenzie on the Challenger.

The door to her quarters opened with a rattle, the bent hair pin sticking out of the access board. Same old civilian rubbish
then - pulling it out - the door slid back into place with a more normal swish.  But the hardware seems ok I guess
She sauntered out of corridor B4 and onto the promenade, looking at the state of the place as she went  3 whole decks to explore.. 3!  lets see,  She paused at a layout schematic on the wall and traced the decks with a finger we are deck 10, that's 1 up and 1 down.  Gotta be something interesting somewhere.

She stands for a while, watching the bustle of persons flowing to and fro.  Each going about their tasks with varying amounts of urgency.  Children, adults, Humans, whatever that thing was..  Some species were curious to watch, you could tell a lot by watching *how* they moved.  With purpose, flighty, waiting their turn, pushing onwards in spite.  Some with their heads deep in a data padd (easy pickings those) others with some form of guard (they want to believe they have something valuable) and the special ones who seem to glide through the crowd, eyes always watching, looking, prying (good sport)

Starting to walk in the clockwise direction, she quickly spys the security offices and instantly spins on her heel.  Maybe later.  i'll get to know them in due course no doubt
Anticlockwise, a few radians later brought the Jackel into view.

[Ensign Mikayla Brooks | Nurse | Deck 14/Medical | Outpost Solaere]

Was Mikayla a bit disappointed that she hadn't been assigned to a starship? Maybe just a little, but all and all a space station was kind of like home for her having grown up upon one. It didn't really matter in the end though, she was just glad to finally have an official assignment somewhere and start her Starfleet medical career in full.

Stepping off the turbolift for her first shift, the young nurse's green gaze took in the rather expansive layout of the medical department that encompassed the whole deck. It would be impressive if not for the fact the sickbay was still in the middle of being retrofitted and updated with the newest equipment... but someday it would be, and hopefully, MJ would be a part of seeing that endeavor come to be. That was certainly a worthy goal to have as it would help so many in this region of space given the dire situation in the Ciden System Colonies.

Mikayla slowed her stride as she came up to the CMO's office, noting the Chief Medical Officer was sitting at her desk seemingly enjoying a hot morning drink. If only... MJ chuckled to herself as a recent memory of a struggle of wills with the basic replicator in her quarters upon awaking came to mind. The machine was quirky at best and had denied her a cup of joe like it was a mother figure. I mean wasn't coffee the elixir of life? Well at least for this human it is. The battle wasn't over by a long shot.

A double knock on the door proceeded before the tall brunette stuck her head inside the opening.

"Good morning, Doctor Grippen," she announced, then added with a small smile. "I am Ensign Mikayla Brooks reporting for duty."

Danjar-Torra Addams

Lieutenant Danjar-Torra Addams
[Outpost Solaere - Deck One - Starbase Operations]

Danjar-Torra Addams was a Frontier Day non-assimilated survivor.  One of the forty percent of mature officers that was said to have made it past that day.  During her time with counselors since then, the Grazerite tried her best to learn how to move on from her experiences on the Discovery and Starbase Sol during that time.  Unfortunately, it didn't always happen as easily as what she would have liked.

On the Revenant, Torra had it pointed out to her by Counselor Bat that she had a tendency to  be wary of Commander Garrison whenever the XO was in Torra's presence.  Garrison had been one the Borg-assimilated officers aboard the Discovery; and Torra had personally seen the Commander kill at least two security members while under Borg influence.  While Torra knew the Commander had not been in control of her actions, it was still difficult for Torra to not be wary and to not let her bias affect her work when it came to dealing with her superior officer.

When she had received her new assignment to the outpost, Torra had been relieved until she learned that Commander Garrison would be it's Commanding Officer.  Torra had to pause and ponder if this transfer was the right thing for her.  After nearly two weeks of pondering, Torra was still undecided.

Her indecision resulted in her having arrived two days ago.  Day one - Torra, set about learning all she could about the station and it's layout, and it's crew - notably her staff.  Day two - the Grazerite reviewed all the past Operations logs, as well as all reports about the colony and the nearby Romulan refugee camp.   Today, however was her first official day on shift in the Operations room and she was eager to leave her tiny office for more spacious and active heart of the station.

When she arrived she had hoped to see her friend Nira, who had also been assigned to the outpost - as it's Executive Officer.  However, she found the room being overseen by the Rigelion Chief Sec/Tac officer, Lieutenant Commander Rabolon.   Torra dipped her head in respectful greeting towards the Duty Officer and quietly relieved her junior at the Ops console.

0800 Hours
Outpost Solare
Day 1

Feeva Drylo had been up for two hours already. She had had a healthy breakfast, went for a walk in the gym, and then came back, stepped into her uniform, and made sure it was perfect. She'd tied her long, red hair back into a neat braid, and made sure that her makeup and jewelry were small and understated. The picture of a perfect young officer.
She made her way into the corridor, smiling at the passers-by. She made her way to Medical, and then rang the chime. She waited to be let in, and as soon as she was allowed to, she entered the anteroom, saluting as she did so. "I am looking for Dr. Maja Grippen," she said to the Yeoman. "I am Ensign Feeva Drylo, station's counselor," she said.
She was escorted to the CMO's office, and once there, she smiled warmly. "Thank you," she said. She waited to be called, patiently.

[Promenade]
Running into Nira was always a pretty good thing. She'd gotten more used to her co-commander's presence and it was always nice to have someone to work with. Kinley looked around the promenade with a shrug. "œSo far, it's not bad. I think. I haven't lived on a station for longer than a week since I was eight though, so, this is all new for me. The sprucing up is going on schedule though, so there's that. " She said with a shrug. "œI will admit, I had to find this place on the map when I first got the news. But, it should be interesting. " she said. Interesting was a good term for it, given the reputation of lawlessness in the area. She really hoped that the rumors were exaggerated, though, she was bracing herself in the opposite case. "œ I was actually trying to get to know some of the folks living here. They've been already coming in since we've set up shop. Want to join me?" she asked.

It was at that moment when she noted Dersch with his family and waved hi to him and his family. Little Katie was so adorable. She was about as old as her own niece, also named Katie. An odd thought popped into her head about how it might actually be more possible to have her folks visit her, now she wasn't on a spaceship for so long. That would be nice.

Suddenly, Kinley felt a strange feeling of being watched. It seemed to be from that young woman in the distance. Probably also watching the busy concourses, from what it seemed like.

Olivia noticed the Commander who gave a little wave, She didn't know if it was to JB or either her or Katie, But she waved anyway, She needed to get to know everyone. She excused her self from the table and walked over to the table the Commander had seated at. Even with her being 6 months Pregnant now, she could still walk fine without needing any extra energy. She told JB they were having another Kid right before he left for the 6 month tour of duty on the  Revenant so it had been a little more than 6 months..Wow, time flys.. "Commander, Olivia Dersch, I just wanted to introduce myself and say hello, Since I will be here with my Husband" Olivia held out her hand to shake the Commanders. He knew she might have things to do, But she wanted to just qiuckly introduce herself

[Outpost Solaere, Deck XIV, CMO Office]

Taja looked up from her terminal to see the first arrival of the new medical staff, Nurse Brooks. Which was good because the doctor had only just finished reading her personnel file. With a warm Risan smile, the doctor waved the ensign into the office and offered her a seat.

"Nurse Brooks. Welcome aboard Outpost Solaere. Apologies for the state of the place, lots of work still to do. Grab a seat, can I get you a drink?"

Then the Yeoman's message popped up on her screen about another new arrival waiting to see her. It was a perfect opportunity to talk to both new arrivals together as a team. "Come in, take a seat." Now the opportunity to play with her mini office replicator had doubled.

Ah, a seat with a drink!

[Commander Nira Said | Promenade | Deck Ten | Outpost Solaere]

Nira smiled at Kinley's offer. "Gladly," she said. She felt like it was a good idea for the two command officers to get to know the layout, and Kinley's offer was a good one.

As they proceeded, Nira could get a sense of being watched. Looking around, there were some people watching in passing. Some she recognized; particularly Dersch. The small group around him had to be his family; she had heard about them from Dersch. Passing a turbolift, Nira noticed Torra waiting for it.

"Torra!" she called. "It's so great to be with you!"

The six months on the Revenant were as good as any to be with Torra in a way that it made Nira feel she was back on the Discovery, the first ship she ever felt well and truly at home. Torra had always been a sister to Nira, and in many ways, she was glad her best friend was serving on the outpost.

Of course, she had recalled the discomfort Torra had felt around Kinley, and she could understand, given they were both on Discovery during Frontier Day and when Kinley was assimilated. Nira had to admit, Torra was one of two people she was most worried about; the second being Malik Grippen. Still, she felt glad she was serving with Torra at the outpost at the same time as Kinley: A close friend to make her feel better around an individual she was uncomfortable with. Six months with the two of them together on the Revenant didn't seem to have changed things much.

"Kinley and I are getting to know the layout of the station," she said. "You can come along if you'd like to."

Looking around, she noticed that, while there were lots of empty establishments on the Promenade, she noticed a business that looked to be recently set up, despite looking like it had been there since the outpost was abandoned. She looked at the sign... "The Jackal," which looked like a hovercart with hastily painted words on it hanging above the door.

In fact, the whole place looked to have been set up in a hurry. Nira was certain that it hadn't been there since she came aboard when she first once-overed the Promenade. She could just see inside the establishment, and despite being a distance away, she could tell a lot of the materials seemed to have been jumbled together hurriedly. There were a handful of outdoor-cafe-style tables looked to have been assembled from metal scraps; the bar looked like it had been assembled from a shuttlecraft, minus the nacelles; and that was how Nira figured it looked to have been assembled in a hurry.

Nira couldn't see much else of the inside of the bar, despite what she could see, but she figured the rest of the establishment looked like crap. Nonetheless, for the first time in a while, Nira's suspicious tendencies were aroused. However, she set it aside; she was still new, along with most of the officers here.

Mikayla was relieved to find the Chief Medical Officer so friendly like upon their first meeting. The brunette nodded at the invitation to come in, then she did so taking one of the two chairs in front of the CMO's desk; crossing her feet at the ankles and keeping a relaxed yet professional posture while sitting back.

"Yes, thank you. I would love a coffee, ma'am, with a splash of cream if it isn't too much trouble." she answered with appreciative eyes, then her green gaze went to the doorway as another crew member was seemingly joining them; another new face to remember.
