S3:E8 BEGINNINGS AND ENDINGS

[USS Challenger - Bridge, Morning of wedding]

=A= Waring to Briggs, Kyle Briggs. Uh, yeah, do you have any idea where any of my stuff is to get ready? I thought I set it aside but I can't seem to find it. I hope it didn't find its way with my shirts. =A=

Kyle was on the Bridge checking on last minute details and guests arrivals and coordinating one last time with the base on Security. He smiled when his friend contacted him and sounded like a ball of nerves. He reached for his own comm.

Hold tight, Boss. I'm on my way. 

He passed command back to Lieutenant Shaw and made his way to Will's quarters.

[XO quarters]

Kyle sounded his arrival at the door and gave it a few seconds before letting himself in. Knowing Will's "condition" he knew his best friend wouldn't mind. The first thing he did was walk over and take the coffee cup the young man was holding.

"How many of these have you had already?" Kyle asked looking around the room. There was clothes thrown every where. "Have a seat and relax. Just breath." he advised as he stepped toward the replicator. "I saved your suit pattern in the computer. I didn't want anything happening to it." Kyle explained as he keyed in the code for retrieval. "Now. What else can I help you with, buddy?" he asked.

[Captain's Quarter's - Morning of the Wedding]

"Come in, before I do my hair a mischief!!" Ruth said panicking.

"Hold the door!" Anya said running along the corridor with her bridesmaids dress still in the wrapper over her arm, strappy sandals and jewellery in the other hand.

"Don't tell me the ever stalwart Viking is having a wibble!" teased Katya.  "Just as well I found a bottle of this when we were last on DS9 isn't it!" she said producing a bottle of Brennevin. "That's if Dr. Briggs thinks it's a good idea to give you a swig to calm your nerves?"

"I'm gonna dive in Ruth's water shower while you're doing that... we have 4 females and one adorable little love to get ready!" she said nodding at Elijah.  "On second thoughts I can be ready inside 30 mins.  Liv would you like me to look after Elijah so you can deal with the bigger baby there.  Though if she's being like this Gods know what Will's going to be like!!"

"Oh by Loki!! Will!! Hang on!" exclaimed Ruth.

Sigurdsdottir to ch'Verret and Aune, Lahr I'm hoping in all the mess that is my wedding blur I've asked you to put Sven onto our network or his commbadge still works from last time!  Anyhow, could you locate my hubby to be and make sure he's not being as much of a headless chicken as I am, also Sven, if you could meet me at my quarters 45 minutes before we need to be at the Holosuite I'd be grateful. Ruth out. 

[CO's Quarters - Morning of the Wedding]

Before she could step through the door after receiving that response from Ruth, Liv stopped as the twins came rushing along the corridor, carrying their dresses and various other items in her hands. Allowing them to enter first, as Katya mentioned the bottle of Brennevin and whether Liv would allow it as a way to calm Ruth's nerves.

" Dr Briggs, just might, although we don't want any of us to be completely legless by the time we get to the holosuite, so let's start off with one of my Nebula's first".

In fact Liv had planned for them to least have a couple of drinks, whilst getting ready, not to mention ensuring that they all ate, even if it was only snacks, to keep up their energy levels, until the reception. " We have snacks and other treats, that'll be here soon" Liv added, before Anya, spoke about grabbing a shower, reminding them of how many people needed to get ready including Elijah.

Her little boy seemed to take it all in his stride, as he settled down on the floor with his toys, as Anya then changed her mind and offered to look after Elijah, whilst Liv dealt with Ruth. Liv couldn't help but grin at that comment, as Ruth answered and then dealt with some official wedding business with Lahr.

" No more comm calls, soon to be Mrs Waring, it's time for you to relax and let us look after you and Anya, I don't mind, if you want to watch over Elijah and Ruth, let's get these eyes of yours sorted".

Liv then opened up her bag and took out a cream that would quickly see to any residual puffiness.

[Reyes' Quarters - Morning of the Wedding]

"Aw..." Anya said softly in disappointment. "Getting bashful, counselor?"

Kali's finger paused over the touchpad. She may be absolutely shameless, but that didn't mean she would goad Ryder any more than necessary. Sensing his sidestepping, she casually said, "Anybody who lacks any sort of hair and hasn't seen me in my skivvies can vacate the room now."

Anya gasped. "Rude!" She snatched the red dress from the bed and shook it at Kali. "I'm taking this!"

"You underestimate its power," Kali warned, but did not move to steal it back. When Anya sashayed out for the adjacent room, Kali returned to the replicator. "I told you she was stealing my stuff, counselor." And it was also why her limited edition makeup kit was safely stored in his quarters instead.

The replicator pinged and from within slid out a freshly made, aegean blue chiffon dress. For someone like her, who preferred questionable low cut outfits, it was pretty damn modest and nothing like the slinky red dress Anya made off with. But when she bought the original on Memory Alpha, she had ruefully admitted to herself that it actually complimented not just Ryder's eyes, but the clean cut military air about him. And maybe she was a little worried that people may not take her seriously as his date.

Men like Nathan Ryder were supposed to be with intellectual, classy women with commendations attached. The classy part was debatable so Kali would at least like to pretend like she wasn't bar trash. Though she really did like the cut of the dress - and maybe she liked the color a tad more than red.

As if she hadn't just throttled her ego, Kali shimmied into the dress. "Zip me up, pleasy? And don't get too excited now," she teased. "My mission is to at least reach the ceremony with it."

While it could never be said that Nathan was ashamed of his attraction to Kali, he was grateful that the topic of conversation was quickly changed. Some private things were just meant to stay private, not discussed in detail with people who were not part of the situation. He gave Anya an apologetic smile while she made her retreat. With an amused chuckle, he said, "It seems as if you are a willing party to the aforementioned theft, considering you didn't tell her not to."

In all honesty, he did not care what Kali wore as long as it was appropriate for a wedding. Nathan thought she was beautiful no matter what she wore. Ever the gentleman, he stepped close and obligingly zipped her into the dress. "I think you mean the reception, Kal'," he teased back before leaning over her shoulder to press a soft kiss to her cheek. "And don't worry, the Captain's wedding is a bit more important than that party we never made it to," he added with an amused shake of his head.

"Aren't we confident," she said slyly as he zipped her up. There wasn't much to zip with a backless dress, but that wasn't really the point was it? "The hair is staying up, you know. Then we'll see just how long that infamous human mettle can stand."

What was next on the checklist? Kali glanced at the mirror and fixed her twisty updo. Her painted lips pursed at her reflection, then to the side at Ryder's reflection. Not a bad looking pair if she had a say in anything, but she didn't want to work too hard on it. Weddings were notoriously a showstopper for the bride and groom after all.

She patted his tie with sympathy before searching for some jewelry and a matching pair of pumps. A thought came to her while she put on her earrings. "We're missing something," she realized. "The gift! Did we not get a gift?!"

Before she gave him the chance to respond, she clicked her tongue and searched her vanity for an envelope. "Okay. Here's what we do. We go down to the gift check in. Find the biggest gift. That's very important. I'll distract the attendant with my legs. You know how nice my legs are. Then-" She showed him the double adhesive of the envelope and stuck it on the mirror. "-bam! Switch envelopes. Then you slip the other envelope in my dress and I'll properly incinerate it. It's foolproof and absolutely something I have never done before."

[Professor Emeritus, Lieutenant Commander (ret.) Judith Eastman(-Williams) & Max Williams -outside the CO's quarters, morning of the wedding]

In their newfound role as parental figures to Ruth, Judy and Max felt it was only fitting that they visit her before she went off on her big day.

"I hope she's doing fine," Judy told Max as they walked over, her orthopedic shoes clip-clopping on the deck.
"Everyone's nervous on their wedding day, like we were," he answered. "I'm sure it'll be fine in the end."
"You're right. We were terrified, and we're... old. We should know better," she answered.

She gently straightened her royal blue dress, while he fidgeted with the unbuttoned jacket of his equally blue three-piece suit, before ringing the chime on Ruth's quarters.

"POLICE! OPEN UP!" the retiree hollered as she and her hubby waited for Ruth to open the door.

"Six... no, five" he said once Kyle had taken his coffee "Oh, that's right. I knew that. Did I know that? May....be?" he said, unsure of whether he actually knew that was where his suit was.

"I don't know what I'm doing. I haven't slept and I'm nervous. Really nervous. This is what I want yet I can help but nervous. I don't even know what I'm doing. I'm looking for a suit that isn't replicated yet and I tore apart the room looking for my commbadge that I already had on. I think I'm going to go insane, Kyle. Honestly, I don't know how Ruth manages to keep it contained. I'm lucky this is only one day or I'd have myself all out of sorts..."

"Liv!! Thank Odin!  I might yet have hair left!! And no, I just know what my hubby to be can be like so I rallied the troops!" Ruth smiled and let Liv get on with organising stuff gratefully.  "Would you believe I haven't even had a coffee this morning!"

Katya winked "Do we get non-virgin ones for once, pretty please?!" she fluttered her eyelids exaggeratedly at Liv, knowing she'd likely get a 'No!' which she was fine about as they had all day and most of the night to go with the alcohol.  Much as she was a rebel, she also knew how to pace herself.  She might make a fool of herself at Academy parties, but she was determined not to show up her sister at her wedding.

Arya meanwhile was happily on the floor.  "Hey Roo... do you still have those cartoon movies on your server, the one about the Good Dinosaur or something?  I think, if Liv's ok with that, a certain young man would love watching them snuggled up on the bed with me!  And I'm sure you're going to be awesome and so smart as your Auntie Roo and Uncle Will's ringbearer! Oh what, did you not tell her?!"

"To be honest Arya I don't know what I've asked and what I haven't lately.  Between Leyton and wedding and arranging the transfers of cadets and the soon to be renaming of the station and handover to Magda and so on... I feel like I need to be like that programme I stumbled across.  Old Terran programme about a scarecrow that was alive.  Worzel Gummidge.  He had different heads he could put on.  Might be useful being able to do your hair and make up on yourself looking head on... no pun intended, and then switch heads! But yes, Liv if it's ok with you and Elijah I'd like him to be ring bearer.  And yeah, just get into the files, it's under animated Arya."

Kyle, whichever is more appropriate.  Find a seat where you can, we have snacks and drinks coming I'm told by our lovely doctor here.  Do you know everyone.  The twins I think you know Arya and Katya, Kat was the one who let you in, Arya's our star babysitter on the bed there with Briggs Junior also known as the adorable Elijah who is going to be my ringbearer.  Liv here is my matron of honour, it's a family affair as Kyle's best man!, she's also my Chief Medical Officer... one of at the moment but once we bring Leyton to book, she's it.  Maggie is marrying the CMO on the base and staying here.  And Liv, Arya, Katya, this is Dr. Judith Eastman-Williams sometimes known as 'Judy' otherwise as 'Argh Run it's the Wicked Witch of the Eastman', and her lovely hubby and chef extraordinaire - Max Williams."

"MAX!! Yes of course and it's Williams.  Sorry if I'd just remembered the other part of your hyphenation Dr. Judy I'd have remembered." Katya exclaimed.  "Can I get you a drink of anything.. Liv says there's snacks coming. And we have Brennevin too!" she winked.

"You look amazing both of you by the way.  Royal blue really suits you! Now, if it's ok, I've said that ranks are off limits in her and for the duration of the wedding.  So first name terms or 'Mr and Mrs' unless you say otherwise... is that ok.  Forgive me, Liv needs to get this cream on, or I'll look a mess by the time 2pm rolls around!"

Not to mention how thoughtful Anya was, in regards to keeping Elijah occupied, there's was a shout from the other side of the door. Recognising the voice immediately, magic cream still in hand and just about registering how Ruth wanted Elijah to be ringbearer, as the door opened to admit Judy and Max.

Elijah who once again, remained the most calm and behaved, as opposed to his usual cheeky antics, if he got bored, showed Anya, his many dinosaurs as the twins and Ruth spoke to the newcomers. Deciding it was probably for the best not to correct Ruth about the fact, that she already knew Judy and had also met Max, at her batcholerette party. Besides she had enough going on at the minute, without adding to her nerves.

" Hi Judy and Max" she said, then turned her attention back to the Bride. " Yes, lets get this cream on, but I would love to have Elijah be your ringbearer and wait till you see the suit, that me and Kyle found for him, on the station".

Once the cream had been applied, Liv stood back to check it over, then spoke again.

" There we go, back to normal, now lets get you some caffeine ....".

Liv paused as the door chime, went off once more, walking over to open it and take control of the trolley, filled with the snacks and other things that she had arranged to keep the bridal party going.

" Okay the snacks are here as well as fresh juices and of course two pitchers, one virgin Nebula and the other non virgin".

Placing the trolley out of the way but in reach of everyone as she then fetched the Bride a raktajino.

"Or Mr. and Mrs. Williams, if you must," Judy added as she made a little hug round.

As Liv applied the cream, the older woman looked the bride-to-be right in the eye, this time without even the glasses in the way (for once, Judy used her contacts).
"I can see, young lady, that you're currently in a minor meltdown. That's allowed - this is one of the biggest days of your life. Just remember - you have the best people helping you through this, so you can just switch the brain - click - off," she lectured.

"And for what it's worth, Will is probably in worse shape than you are right now. He has guys helping him, so it's probably a complete frat house in there," she added. "No offense to Max or the little man here."
"None taken," Max answered. As he spoke, Judy reached over to open the top button of his shirt, and he closed it just as soon as she opened it.

Lahr nodded glad to have been of help and grinned at the blonde who offered to save him a dance.   "I'll be looking forward to it... and you can give me his dance to." Lahr commented, chin nodding towards Sven.  "He's married to his work."

They foursome left the table and Lahr watched them most of the way until the blonde blew him a kiss.  He smirked.   He still had it - even if Chloe was giving him the run around and had backed out of being his plus one to the ceremony and reception.  That's okay... Lahr had made up for Lek's lack and asked Helga to be his date tonight.  He just hoped Helga hadn't agreed to spite Lek and was planning more than just a night of drinking and dancing.

He'd seen what Lek did to crappy cadets, he didn't want to see what the Ferengi would do to someone who made a play for his 'Feemale'.

Lahr glanced over towards Sven at the man's odd statement.  "Really? They seem total legit to me." He glanced to where the blonde had disappeared. "But if you want I can do some digging through the customs footage with some facial recognition and find out what ship she... I mean 'they'... came on and find out her... um.. their names."

"Yeah yeah laziest man on this ship!"  Ruth grinned.  "It's ok I'll try not to intentionally make work for you, at least with regards to Will!" she answered.

"And yeah,.. git!  Go make yourself look more gorgeous and I'll see you there in 10!"

Lahr wriggled his antenna and his eyebrows in taunt and gave a slight shrug.  "Ain't my fault the rest of the crew are over-achievers."

At her 'dismissal' he hurriedly escaped into the hall and headed to his shared quarters.

Sven shook his head, "Hey now cowboy. I see that look in your eye. Fancy that dance eh? Tell you what, go ahead and see what you can dig up, legally." he emphasized the legal part, "And you know, I'll just not ask you about any other information you may want to keep. But honestly, the whole thing seems sketchy and unfortunately you confirmed it. So, how's life been?"

Lahr gave the security officer an innocent look.

"If you are concerned about legality, make the search an office security request due to you observing 'suspicion activity' and then we're both covered - legally."

"Hold the door!" Anya said running along the corridor with her bridesmaids dress still in the wrapper over her arm, strappy sandals and jewellery in the other hand.

"Don't tell me the ever stalwart Viking is having a wibble!" teased Katya.  "Just as well I found a bottle of this when we were last on DS9 isn't it!" she said producing a bottle of Brennevin. "That's if Dr. Briggs thinks it's a good idea to give you a swig to calm your nerves?"

"I'm gonna dive in Ruth's water shower while you're doing that... we have 4 females and one adorable little love to get ready!" she said nodding at Elijah.  "On second thoughts I can be ready inside 30 mins.  Liv would you like me to look after Elijah so you can deal with the bigger baby there.  Though if she's being like this Gods know what Will's going to be like!!"

"Oh by Loki!! Will!! Hang on!" exclaimed Ruth.

Aune's commbadge.  He's here with me and it's working fine.  It's only the cadet badges that have to be synced to the system... all others connect automatically to whatever systems are in the area."

When the call ended, Lahr reached down closed the menu and using his Ops ID and password was able to access a greater range of computer function. Because of the rather personal nature of the request, he used the touch screen rather than the voice mode to request the location of Commander Will Waring.  It gave the groom's location as the XO's quarters on Challenger.  The Andorian glanced up to the Security officer and sighed.  "No rest for the wicked they say, right? Let's see if he's even up." he remarked as he tapped his commbadge initiating a call.

"ch'Verret to Commander Waring.  This is your wedding day wake up call.  How are things going?"

He clicked his combadge which was in his pocket.
"Cap't, this is Aune. I'm on my way." he gave the Andorian a nod. "Duty calls." and with that he left the cafe. He made a quick stop by his quarters to pick up his tuxedo than made his way to Ruth's quarters. He tapped the doorbell.

Before Liv could answer Ruth about the lack of caffeine and the comments associated with that new information and Katya's attempt to try and get a non virgin Nebula out of Liv. Not to mention how thoughtful Anya was, in regards to keeping Elijah occupied, there's was a shout from the other side of the door. Recognising the voice immediately, magic cream still in hand and just about registering how Ruth wanted Elijah to be ringbearer, as the door opened to admit Judy and Max.

Elijah who once again, remained the most calm and behaved, as opposed to his usual cheeky antics, if he got bored, showed Anya, his many dinosaurs as the twins and Ruth spoke to the newcomers. Deciding it was probably for the best not to correct Ruth about the fact, that she already knew Judy and had also met Max, at her batcholerette party. Besides she had enough going on at the minute, without adding to her nerves.

" Hi Judy and Max" she said, then turned her attention back to the Bride. " Yes, lets get this cream on, but I would love to have Elijah be your ringbearer and wait till you see the suit, that me and Kyle found for him, on the station".

Once the cream had been applied, Liv stood back to check it over, then spoke again.

" There we go, back to normal, now lets get you some caffeine ....".

Liv paused as the door chime, went off once more, walking over to open it and take control of the trolley, filled with the snacks and other things that she had arranged to keep the bridal party going.

" Okay the snacks are here as well as fresh juices and of course two pitchers, one virgin Nebula and the other non virgin".

Placing the trolley out of the way but in reach of everyone as she then fetched the Bride a raktajino.

[CO's Quarters - Morning of the Wedding]

"Coffeeeeee!"  Ruth moaned in a pretty good imitation of a zombie.  "Thanks Liv.  I was pretty sure once I had people around me I'd start wibbling less because I know I have people I can rely on."

"I'll have coffee and some food first as I'm sure the doctors in the room would advise then that pitcher of nebula is going to be attacked!"  Her good humour returning as she started to relax knowing that she wasn't having to do this all alone she actually started smiling.

[Professor Emeritus Judith Eastman(-Williams) & Max Williams - CO's quarters]

"We'll be Max and Judy, then," Max answered Ruth's comment on titles. They liked to be on a first-name basis anyway.
"Or Mr. and Mrs. Williams, if you must," Judy added as she made a little hug round.

As Liv applied the cream, the older woman looked the bride-to-be right in the eye, this time without even the glasses in the way (for once, Judy used her contacts).
"I can see, young lady, that you're currently in a minor meltdown. That's allowed - this is one of the biggest days of your life. Just remember - you have the best people helping you through this, so you can just switch the brain - click - off," she lectured.

"And for what it's worth, Will is probably in worse shape than you are right now. He has guys helping him, so it's probably a complete frat house in there," she added. "No offense to Max or the little man here."
"None taken," Max answered. As he spoke, Judy reached over to open the top button of his shirt, and he closed it just as soon as she opened it.

"How about a compromise,.." Arya suggested.  "Auntie Judy and Uncle Max... that way you have some respect though you're obviously 'family'? Mr and Mrs Williams, while correct makes you seem old... which, sorry, you might be in age but we know you don't act like grandparents even if we know you are, and somewhat... distant.  Like 'Mr and Mrs Joe Bloggs who might've been at Academy with the groom sometime in the distant past' or 'Jane Doe, who cleaned the jeffries tubes on the first ship Ruth served on...'  I'm exaggerating but you get the idea!"

"You're right about the 'best people', Judy.  I have you two, my crew or at least some very special, trusted members of them.  You know the Briggs, and I think you know ShranLahr ch'Verret too, honestly Lahr is one of my best friends now and he's DJing later too!  Then I've also got this pair of reprobates, but I love them and for all they are Loki's disciples most of the time, I know for a fact that when it comes to important days like today I can rely on them absolutely!  And last but not least I have Sven Aune giving me away!  My viking adopted brother!"  the CO beamed a genuine smile as she was handed a coffee.

"Ahhhh the water of life.  Well that's apparently whisky but I need caffeine right now!  Who wants to see my dress?!  I've kept it secret even from Liv so far!"

She knew the women at least would want to see it so she went to her closet and drew it out.

"I went for proper purple with your dresses, I hope you approve."  Ruth said on a laugh "Not that you have much choice, nor does Sven! He's organizing his Tux, but I said I'd get the vest and tie."

Seeing Sven standing there with his tuxedo over his arm she laid her dress on the bed and flew to him for a bear hug.

"SVEN!!!" she cried and was quickly joined by the twins also wanting their hugs.

"Did you bring your pup?" Arya asked.  "You won't believe Skye, she's grown fast!"

"We've missed you, you need to visit the Academy, we'll sulk, we're good at sulking!" Katya said with a grin.

"Let the man get in.  Sven, I think  you know everyone.  Max you have another man! You won't feel so outnumbered... Sven is a lot of man!" she said teasingly measuring his chest with her hands.

"Help yourself from that trolley over there, various of us will be disappearing off to use the bathroom which is large enough to change in too so your blushes will be saved...although I vote that girls we do our hair and make up out here!"

The purple dresses were gorgeous and a colour that Liv loved, although Ruth's dress was absolutely stunning and Will was in for a right treat, when he got to see her.

Soon time had caught up to them and with getting Elijah ready at the last minute, Liv only had to adjust his purple tie as Ruth then informed them all, that it was time to head to the base. Holding onto her son's hand as she then asked someone to contact Kyle and it was understandable, as Liv then offered to do so.

During that half-hour, Judy and Max spent their time quietly helping out, putting out proverbial brush fires.

Now, it was time to go. Judy slyly put her clutch in the pocket of Max's jacket, and then looked at the younger women with a faux-vicious grin.

"Good luck to all of you with your heels," she teased, tapping on the floor with her own orthopedic shoes. "Something tells me by the time we get there, your feet will hurt more than mine."
