Commander Rayek tr'Lhoell
[USS Discovery - Deck One - Bridge]  (arrival at Verallias II)

Quote from: James Ramort on July 04, 2024, 06:16:55 AM

[USS Discovery | Deck 1 | Bridge | Science Station 1]

The Sensor test was going along smoothly. With the added assistance from Rajagopalan. Ramort was able to quickly finish all necessary checks on the Sensor Sub-Grid. All components in fact reported operation within expected parameters. Some miniscule variations in the upper Gamma Bands could be found but those the computer should be more than capable to compensate for.

[USS Discovery | Deck 1 | Bridge | Science Station 1]

Approaching the Planet Ramort engaged a wide sensor sweep of the Region to find the origins of the Energy Anomaly. Pretty soon it became evident it wasn't merely a trapped Subspace Phenomena but instead based in a very real source. A lone Docking Station orbiting the planet. When he tried to readout the Planets biomarkers or to that effect any other distinguishing factors about the planet all readouts came back with a flat "0". It was like the planet had been coated in a smooth but completely absorbent membrane simply eating the sensors careful rays.

"There seems to be a Docking station in Orbit around the Planet Sir. It features none of the expected local net of Satellites or other minor orbital installations. The planet on the other hand is resisting any effort to scan it. In fact it reflects all attempts to learn more about it. Permission to intensify efforts to pierce and analyze its apparent shielding?"
From his seated position, Rayek looked over towards the Junior Lieutenant Ramort as the Science officer reported out the scan finding.

Another scan-shielded area? The Romulan frowned until Ramort asked for permission to intensify his scan, much like how he had done during previous mission; then his frown turned into satisfied smirk.

"Thank you Mr. Ramort, I believe that is an excellent plan. Make it so."

The phrase was out of his mouth and drawing in amused looks from some of the junior personnel before the Romulan realized just how cliché his order sounded. Ignoring the mirth, Rayek focused his attention on Lorut.  "Attempt to hail the station."

No sooner had he spoken than there was movement from the orbiting station.

Malik plotted a course to the orbiting station. As he did so the sensors detected that one of the stations docking ports activated and changed size to accommodate the Discovery. Lights illuminated the docking port as if to beckon them in.

"It looks like the station has adjusted a dock just to match the ship's requirements. It's as if we're being invited for tea."

Rayek watched the docking port alter it's size before glancing to the Grippen at the Risan's comment.  It reminded him of a poem he'd read when learning Federation Standard.

" 'Will you walk into my parlour?' said the Spider to the Fly." Rayek quoted.  He then turned towards the Captain.  "Captain, I advise against docking the ship and recommend instead attempting to board the station via shuttlecraft.  I suspect once we launch a shuttle, a suitable landing pad will be made available."

Vila nodded. "I apologize for my brusqueness. I understand. Why don't you tell us the plan, and we'll go from there. I am sure that Commander tr'Lhoell will contact me if I am needed,"

Tanner nodded, "The teams will deploy and find their way to the signal, and you can get inventive in helping and hindering them. We can discuss this once they're not listening."

[USS Discovery | Deck 1 | Bridge ] (Current Timeline)

The teams had done a fantastic job, and Lorut was helpful and slightly maniacal in her interactions with the teams' task. All in all, it was a success, and the cake that had been hidden away in case they were hunting was a nice touch.

Rayek, who had returned to his own seat, upon Lorut's return, reigned in his own urge to stand.  Instead, he looked over toward Tactical.  "I want a tactical review of that station.  I want to know what armaments it has." he stated.

Pressing a few buttons and checking the data, Tanner looks at Rayek. "No armaments, none known to us at least."

Lorut Vila

{Discovery|Security}

Vila hoped her face wasn't giving away the thoughts that were going through her head about how dumb this was, and how big of an imposition on her real work it was. And also. If tr'Lhoell wanted a battle sim, she'd give him one. She nodded.

She nodded. "I have ideas," she said....

{Discovery|Bridge|Sometime later}

She slipped into her Console, taking over for Rayek. "Thank you, sir," she said, a look on her face like the cat that had eaten the canary. Her stopgaps had worked-just like they'd done when she was younger. Distract, shock and awe, and thwart them from their efforts. Before, she'd preferred to use to grenades. Today, she'd had to settle for less...explosive things, but still.

She got quickly to work, pressing buttons and rerouting systems. Rayek had a different way of running things, but it at least made sense. "Grippen, reroute that to me, please," she said aloud, eyes still trained on her console. "That movement is a bit...worrying. They threw up a shield," she said. "Should I send out a signal that we come in peace?" She asked. They did come in peace, right?!

Rayek ran an hand along his chin, smoothing down his long stubble. A station without armaments was highly unlikely and only made the Romulan more wary of its' presence.  It was more likely that, similar to the planet below, the station's offensive weapon installations were well-shielded and not showing on the current scans.

"Lieutenant Lachlyn, keep an eye out for any sudden power spikes from the station, it could be a pre-cursor to them powering up a hidden weapons system." Rayek ordered.

When Lorut sought clarification about the Hailing message, Rayek shook his head.  "No, Lieutenant, just a standard hail will suffice."  No one actually trusted those that stated they 'come in peace'.  It was universal - you were judged by your actions more than your words.

Rayek turned once more to look to the Captain, awaiting the man's decision on his recommendation.

Miraj was counting the lights in the hallway out of sheer boredom as there was nothing going on. Until she heard something an order coming through her combadge.

"On my way." Miraj said into the combadge and put her arms to her back, straightening herself. "Computer, mark that crewman Edriron is leaving the assigned post at the request of Lieutenant Lachlyn."
She spoke out loud, remembering the academy drill from one of her officers. It wasn't actually necessary as the ship recorded her orders, but was just something extra that got stuck into her during the basic training.

[USS Discovery - Deck 10 - Security]

Quickly traveling through the ship, she arrived at the Deck 10, in the Security Office. Aknowledging everyone else in the room with a nod, she stood on attention and said:
"Crewman Edriron reporting for duty."

Quote from: Tanner Lachlyn on July 01, 2024, 06:58:17 PM

[USS Discovery - Deck 10 - Security]

Tanner looked up from her PADD and smiled at the new Crewman. A fresh face was always welcome and one that was snappy with their posture,  "Stand easy, and welcome aboard. I'm Chief Lachlyn and I look forward to working with you."

"Good to see you again Ensign." Tanner said with a soft nod.

Tanner froze, "I..I guess it's because it was sprung on me so fast I needed time to plan. I didn't think I could explain it that well." She gave Lorut an apologetic look, "If you want, you can do your part of the drill from the Bridge. I don't want to cause an issue."

She looked to the two Ensigns, "We're going to test your ability to handle some situational changes. Somewhere on Deck Fifteen is a device. It's enclosed in a box. It's giving off a very faint signal that you won't be able to pick up unless you're within five feet of it." Tanner motions to Lorut, "When working Security, Ops is your best friend. They can tell you things nobody else can about the ship's status, its systems and what you will come up against."

Tanner grins, "To ensure this isn't too easy, Turbolift access to that deck has been disabled. You can only enter via an access panel." She looks over at Lorut, "You can also throw in a few obstacles if you like, failed systems or rogue force fields."

Checking her PADD, Tanner promptly added, "You have half an hour to find the box, safely. Any questions?"

[Ensign Lilly Hansen - USS Discovery | Security | (Pre-Station Discovery)]

Lilly turned to the crewman. "Alright, Where do you want to start, If we split up, We can cover more ground, Ops can help when needed, But I have a feeling we will need Vila's help" Lilly then turned and motioned for the crewman to follow. She turned right heading farther into the current deck.

Lilly moved over to let some medical officers pass, Once back she asked. "So, Crewman, What brought you to Starfleet?""

[ Ensign Lilly Hansen | Sec/Tac Medic | USS Discovery | Personel Qaruters ] (Current Timeline)

Lilly sat in her quarters getting some peace. She had also sent a message to Tanner letting her know, If an away team needed to assemble, She would gladly volunteer for the Security part of it. She then started to read a book about the Frontier Day attack, One of the survivors had written a book on what happened, It was so far good.

The Captain was leaning in his chair, with his left hand under his chin staring at the viewscreen.  He seemed to be either lost in thought or studying what he was seeing very hard.  The quote from Rayek peeked his interest, and he finally turned.

"Its a shame that we have to approach this with suspicion," he stated, before Malik announced a docking port had formed.  He raised an eyebrow in a very vulcan manner, and shook his head.

"This is getting more and more interesting..." he stated, listening to the tactical report and shielding.  "Mr Grippen, keep us at a safe distance for now.  Clearly, we've already been scanned." he stated, nodding to his first officer to hail them.

It didn't take long for a response, but instead of the viewscreen, a hologram seemed to activate on the bridge.  A woman in a wine-red gown with a smile.  She looked human.

"Greetings, Captain Tekin Nevir and the crew of the USS Discovery.  Welcome to Erewhon, where your fantasy becomes reality!  You and your crew are invited for rest and relaxation at our state-of-the-art facility.  We will also recharge your ship's supplies while you are below so you needn't worry about your ship.  Dock, and enjoy your stay!"

The hologram faded, and Nevir turned back to Rayek.  "Okay... this is very interesting... I agree with holding Discovery here.  Take a team over, see what this is about."

Vila nodded. "Always," she said, brown eyes narrowed. "Captain, as nice as a shore leave excursion sounds, maybe we should just fly on past and mind our own business?" She sighed. She was tired of "adventure." "Unless there's women and children at risk, of course, and that doesn't appear to be the case-my sensors aren't picking up signs of skirmish, terraforming, or any sorts of signs of unrest." She chose her words carefully-to at once appear urgent but calm. She didn't want everyone to think that her own biases colored her EVERY action-only every other!

Rayek nodded brusquely at the Captain's order to prepare an Away Team.  "Aye, Captain."
As the Romulan began planning who to take with him, he overheard Malik's comment and Vila's response.

"Lieutenant Lorut, might I remind you that, exploration and meeting new life and new civilizations is part of Starfleet's mandate.  This system was thought to be uninhabited; so no, we will not 'fly on past and mind our own business' as you put it.  We are here to explore - not take a shore leave excursion."  With that said, Rayek mentally crossed Vila off his list of personnel to take with him.

He looked around the bridge. "Mr. Grippen, please pass off your duties to Mr. Graham.  This being a recreational space, I think you may be better able to assess it.  Mr. Ramort, you'll come along, perhaps there will be opportunity to study that shielding, and Lieutenant Tanner I will want you and two other Sec/Tac personnel to watch our backs."

Rayek then opened a comm-line.

=/\= "tr'Lhoell to Medical and Engineering.  I need one officer from each of your departments to join on a First Contact Away Team.  Preference is for senior ranked officers - Lieutenant or higher.. as we are wanting to make a good first impression.  Meet at the shuttle bay in 15 minutes." =/\=

After making his selection, Rayek left the bridge to prepare.

He took the turbolift down one level to his family's quarters and checked in with Tess and their son, Fvienn.  He informed them of his orders to lead an Away Team, and promised to return safely.

Tess, though worried, smiled up at him as he leaned in to embrace her.  "All should be well, they claim to be a recreation planet 'where your fantasies become reality'" he quoted.

Tess didn't seem at all relieved at that, and without consciously doing so, Rayek's mind brushed against hers and picked up that she was recalling their First Contact with the Numati.  Rayek blushed, giving away his unintentional intrusion into her thoughts.

The next five minutes were spent profusely apologizing to her for his mental intrusion. Though she said it was okay, Rayek wanted her to know he truly hadn't intended to pry.  In fact, he had been noticing that the more that he used his telepathic abilities the more easily they were to call upon.  He still didn't have much for range but the ease of focusing on another person's mind had vastly improved.

With Tess' forgiveness assured, Rayek said his goodbyes to his family and left to meet up with the rest of the Away Team.

Lek blinked in surprise at the announcement for a First Contact Away Team. He was the first to admit that he didn't always pay full attention during staff meetings, but he was positive that First Contact had not been mentioned. He sighed as he thought about the 'senior officer' condition.  He was the only 'senior' engineer, so Rayek might as have said, get your lobes to the transporter room. He sighed again and rose. He exited his office and spoke to M'Nia.

"Looks like I'm going on an Away mission. Engineering is yours. All I can tell is be ready for anything because on an Away Team, things are never what they seem and invariably worse than expected."

He then exited Engineering and headed for the turbolift.

"Yes Sir, increasing Scanning intensity and broadening search area."

Doing as reported he increased power output to all active sensors and allocated additional computer resources.
But no matter which algorithm he applied or how many terabytes per second of high resolution data from the thousands of sensors placed all along Discoveries Hull he parsed through the computer all results came back empty. Or rather they returned just the cosmic noises consistent with what they would have gotten, had they pointed their sensors into the cold openness of space. Nearly as if the entire planet had been covered in one giant mirror, casting back the image of the Universe at them.

"I am sorry Sir but whatever is shielding this planet is beyond our technology. I can't penetrate it or get any readings for that matter. If we can't get some readings from it I won't be able to pierce through it."

A feeling of excitement was growing in Ramort, he hadn't been part of a Away Team for some time now and the thought of setting boots on a new planet excited him.

Also, this planet held the promise of highly advanced tech. After multiple Borg incidents in the past decades Federation sensors had gotten quite sensitive as a matter of survival. So for whatever it was that shielded this planet to repel his attempts so thoroughly it had to be quite impressive in its level of advancement.

Thinking about who would take the station while he was gone, he turned to the Ensign next to him:

"Ensign, please take the Station while I am gone! I am sure you are more than up to it."

Thus leaving his seat and heading to the Turbolift.

The slight humming of the Turbolift was a known rhythm by now. Each ship had a slightly different sound, and Discoveries was becoming his calming melody more and more. It was quite a strange experience after all he had gone through here, but the ship was also the very vessel carrying him to more and more interesting places in the universe. Like this planet now.

He had to remember to grab a Tricorder before leaving the ship. Gathering all data possible was after all his reason for being on the mission and he didn't want to fall short of the expectation placed into him.

Lorut Vila

{USS Discovery|Bridge}

Quote

Lieutenant Lorut, might I remind you that, exploration and meeting new life and new civilizations is part of Starfleet's mandate.  This system was thought to be uninhabited; so no, we will not 'fly on past and mind our own business' as you put it.  We are here to explore - not take a shore leave excursion.

She opened her mouth to retort that there were better places to explore-an entire (mostly) uncharted quadrant ahead, for example, but thought better of it.

"Right. My apologies," she said, and went back to work. One of these days, these people would learn to trust her gut, but today was apparently not that day. She prepped the systems to monitor the away team, glad for once to stay behind.

"Systems are holding steady," she said.

Tanner Lachlyn

He looked around the bridge. "Mr. Grippen, please pass off your duties to Mr. Graham.  This being a recreational space, I think you may be better able to assess it.  Mr. Ramort, you'll come along, perhaps there will be opportunity to study that shielding, and Lieutenant Tanner I will want you and two other Sec/Tac personnel to watch our backs."

Tanner nodded, "Aye Sir. I'll assemble them right away." A nervous lump formed in her throat as she handed off her station. She'd been cleared for duty and was attending her therapy sessions yet it had been continually pushed that she wouldn't know the extend of her troubles till faced with leaving the ship.

They were now leaving the ship.

Entering the turbolift she tapped her combadge =/\= Lachlyn to Ensign Hansen and Crewman Edriron. Meet me in the Shuttlebay. I'll give you the details of the mission when we're together. =/\=

[Bridge > Shuttlebay]

Ticking off a few items for the trip, Tanner waited quietly for her team. Nervously she rolled her shoulders and worked to focus on the PADD in her hand.

[Ensign Lilly Hansen - Personel Qaurters | USS Discovery]
Lilly had finally reached the much-anticipated 5th chapter of her book when the light chrip of her comm badge interrupted the silence. With a sigh, she closed the book and shifted her attention to the incoming call from Tanner.

=/\= Lachlyn to Ensign Hansen and Crewman Edriron. Meet me in the Shuttlebay. I'll give you the details of the mission when we're together. =/\=

Lilly smiled. Time to go to work.  =/\= "On my Way Lt." =/\=

As Hansen stepped into the shuttle, she felt the anticipation of an imminent away team mission building within her. She didn't know the specifics yet, but she trusted that the Lieutenant would provide all the necessary details.

"Lt, I am here as asked, Whats our Mission"
