Tanner laughed, loudly, at his comment, "No. No, we will make sure you have a bed." As they walked she explained, "We have crew quarters on deck ten, which is the same deck as the science labs."

They walked through the doors of the shuttle bay and she pointed to a computer on the wall, "Which is also the same deck as the bay we just landed in." Tanner grinned, "Come on." Walking down the corridor she continued, "Your roommate is on shift right now, but they work in medical which is always handy. They just arrived a few months ago, so you're both able to be new-ish together."

"If you get turned around, don't hesitate to ask the computer for help. It's easy to get turned around with the layout but soon you'll be able to navigate without issue." Tanner stopped before a door, "Here you are. You're programmed in so you can lock it, but remember your roommate can unlock it. So...be sure to communicate if you have any guests over. Security hates being called for such things."

Stepping to the side she moved her arms behind her back, "Go drop your luggage. I'll wait here. We'll head to the science lab after."

[USS Discovery - Deck 10 - Assigned Quarters 25]

News of his own bed, that was a great relief, he had worked hard to leave that one nickname behind him, the one he earned after falling asleep on one of that old manual consoles, hopefully it now was truly forgotten.

He walked into the relatively small room, it wasn't much, but it would be his, or at least part of it, which still felt great!
He dropped his small luggage on the one bunk that was still unclaimed and looked around in hopes of gathering some information about his roommate. At least it seemed he was tidying up the room, which also meant there wasn't much to look at and it was hardly a great introduction to your future roommate if you started to pry through their tucked away personal belonging, even less so with a superior officer standing right in front of the door. A Security officer at that too.
He would have to wait till he finished his shift to get to know his new roommate after all, it seemed.

Another quick look through the room revealed it was equipped with all the most basic necessities. Importantly it also featured a Replicator. He would have to use that as soon as he would get some time to properly settle in.

Stepping back through the Door, outside he posed a question to his guide:

"I can hardly imagine it is pleasant to have to barge in other people quarters. But maybe thats securities equal to us Science Folks scanning through Data. While at the topic, you mentioned the labs are around here somewhere too?"

[USS Discovery - Deck 10 Corridor]

"There are," Tanner motioned for him to follow, "No excuse for you to be late to shift." She grinned, "Not that it can be helped when switching shifts. Learning to move from Alpha to Gamma is especially a killer. In those cases, the replicator is your best friend. All the coffee."

They rounded a corner and the labs came in sight, "Your Chief, Lieutenant Commander Garrison, she's a real meanie. Watch out for her." The doors to the lab slid open for them, "Don't forget your manners, ever." The lab itself wasn't impressive to her, but to this youngling, it probably held some importance. She noticed Kinley off in the distance, "Wait here. I'll go get her."

Leaving him to take in the lab, Tanner walked over to Kinley. Slowly. The last time she moved fast in the science lab she ended up covered in something warm and slimy, "Hey Garrison." Tanner said after coming into earshot, "I have something for you."

Kinley Garrison

[Science Labs]

Kinley looked at the results of Rajagopalan's experiments on the biological properties from that virus they had caught in that nebula. A bit of a favor for the Medical folks down the turbolift. Viruses weren't really alive, but they could evolve all the same. And the differences between the strain preserved on the Jupiter vs the one that they had caught were fascinating. Something definitely worth exploring in the future to make a much better antidote if they caught it again. She wasn't a biologist by any means, but she knew enough about it that it looked pretty promising to her. Definitely worth pursuing in her opinion.

She heard the hiss of the door to the lab opening. Judging by the lack of clicking claws on the tiles, it wasn't Steve, heading over to his scratching post that was tucked into the corner. Instead it was Tanner, followed by an ensign she hadn't met before. In science blue nonetheless. Setting down her PADD, she grinned, welcoming the distraction from her work.

"œWow. I don't get to see you down here all that much. Anything I can help you with? "œ she asked, before nodding to the new guy. "œ Hi there! Nice to meet you. " she said to the new fellow. She really hoped he was the new addition to her team. After one of her crew was Patient Zero to that virus, she'd been short staffed on the several projects they were running at the moment

"I should probably pop by more often," Tanner agreed, "Which I will work on." Pointing to James she, with a flourish, said, "Allow me to introduce your new Ensign. Fresh out of the Academy, bright-eyed and ready to do your bidding."

She motioned for James to come closer, "Ensign Ramort, meet Lieutenant Commander Garrison, head brain around here."

[USS Discovery - Science Lab]

After entering James looked around, trying not to make his curiosity too obvious. The equipment around him he was familiar with. Consoles and instruments designed to be used to find traces the faintest elements, accessing the ships sensors and covered ports hiding away interfaces capable of augmenting the lab with whatever additional instruments might be needed for any given situation.

He was of course familiar with these kinds of labs, they had often been the location for hundreds of hours of practical training for his class.
All of this made the strange thing standing in the corner of the room all the more mysterious. It was covered in markings nearly as if something large has used it to sharpen its claws.
Determined to not let his uneasieness about this shine through he let his academy drilling kick back in and promptly stood at attention, his eyes focusef on his new superior.

"Ensign James Ramort reporting as ordered. Seeking Permission to assume my station onboard Discovery."

Afrer finishing the words the instructors had hammered into him he remained standing still, waiting to be released again but in his eyes already glimmed a spark of his eagerness to just jump to the next console and explore all the labs abilities for the next couple hours.

Kinley giggled at Tanner's rather dramatic flourish in introducing the newbie.

"œGreat to meet you Mr. Ramort. You can be at ease. Promise. I know they tell you to be all formal and that in the academy, but you don't have to worry about that in the lab at least. I don't mind. It helps the team to work better I think." she said with a shrug, noticing that he seemed interested in the scratching post. "œOh, You noticed that thing in the corner ? That's Steve's scratching post. He's the ship's holographic therapy velociraptor and a bit of an experiment I'm running on the side on behalf of his creator. Give him some orange jello and he'll be your best friend forever. I can show you him, if you want. He's perfectly harmless, no matter what the Chief Engineer says. " she mentioned .

"Did you just say a holographic Velociraptor? Do you mean you have an autonomous hologram with engaged magnetic constrictors roaming the lab? Also it can process organic matter? You really have to show me its code sometimes, this nearly sounds like you have an actual semi evolved holographic lifeform onboard. And yes I would like to actually meet him sometimes!"

The topic really caught his attention, he had read about advancements in the field of experimental holo evolution theories but would not have dreamed to hope to encounter one outside the Jupiter Stations controlled labs. Besides that he was relived that his future superior officer seemed welcoming of him joining the team.

The only thing worrying about this exchange now seemed to be the unaddressed comment of the Chief Engineer paired with the depth of the scratch markings.

"œYup.  And the rest of the ship too. He's definitely a unique hologram, from what I've seen. Pretty much one of a kind now. The eating part is actually pretty unique, as he disintegrates the food after eating like what happens in the replicator, except he takes that energy for his own systems and returns the rest to the computer. Aside from personality, given that no one's made any in-depth time travel to the Mesozoic that I'm aware of, he's pretty much a real raptor. Remind me some time to show you that coding. before someone helped me look at the code and fix it, it was pretty much held together by duct tape. But I digress.

Kinley grinned at the two of them, giving a knowing mischievous look at Tanner concerning just how big Steve was, knowing he was more the size of a cat than any gigantic lizard.

The classic movie Jurassic Park was 4 centuries old by now, but dang, it still gave people interesting ideas. Pressing a button on her console, Steve appeared, fluffy, tiny, and very much perking his head and sniffing at the new ensign, before purring and thumping his tail against James. "œI think he likes you! she said.

James Ramort

James knelt down and slowly reached towards the Velociraptors long head but stopping just short of touching it. Waiting to allow the Raptor to notice him and indicate if he allowed the contact. STEVE, in response, slightly tilted his head.

James interpreted this is a sign of approval and carefully touched his feathered head. Careful to not provoke the Raptor. Taking this time he also had more opportunity to take a look at the small Saurier. The markings all along his body which, if he were a real animal, might have served a purpose as a means of camouflage and those comically large and sharp dagger shaped claws. Now at least the deep scratch markings made sense.

He really seems nice. I can hardly imagine the headaches he gives Engineering with his energy transfers though.

This thought provoked an honest smile from Ramort.

The Instructors told us to expect to meet new life forms soon after our first mission but this might just have set the record for my class. Speaking of, am I the only new Officer on board? I thought before the festivities there would have been quite a few of us receiving our commissions?

"œIndeed. I remember his creator mentioning that that made some interesting glitches when he was created. He's a lot less glitchy nowadays, I hope.

Kinley shrugged. "œI'm not sure on that front. So far you're the only science guy to come on so far. That doesn't mean there's not someone who came in that I'm not aware of yet in a different department.

"I guess I will keep my eyes open for any other fresh ensigns then, maybe I even recognize some faces from the academy. Maybe if I look around, someone will look familiar."

Ramort took another look around the lab. Soon one of these Stations would be his working place but before that there was so much more of the ship to explore.

"With your permission, commander, I would like to continue taking a look around the ship before my first duty shift starts."

Kinley grinned. "œFine by me. I won't get in the way from the grand tour. I'm sure Tanner has some cool spots she still has to show you about. I'll show you more of the ropes when you're on duty next. I would let you know that Ensign Rajagopalan is very passionate about microbiology, so expect to be there for a while if you want to talk about that with him, so be aware of that. I've got to finish up the Breen unimatrix before the festivities coming up soon, so i've got some overtime to go. " she said, giving a scratch to Steve, who gleefully ruffled his feathers in satisfaction.

"Yay...overtime and Breen." Tanner had no clue how Kinley made such things sound fun, but she did. Always. Shaking her head she added, "Sounds wild."

Motioning to Ramort she confirmed,  "I don't know about cool spots, but he's getting a full deck tour. Engineering, Bridge, Medical, Holodecks, but first comes lunch. Security gets cranky if they get hungry."

She booped Steve and tilted her head towards the door, "Come on Ensign. We've got lots to see before this lab becomes your home." Waving to Kinley she said, "Food, us - has to happen."

James Ramort

[USS Discovery - Science Labs]

"Thanks for the warm welcome, Commander, I am already looking forward to my first shift."

The Lab had been the spot of the ship he had looked the most forward to seeing, it would be where he was to spend most of his time from now on after all. But Discovery was so big, had so many places yet unsee, so many faces yet unknown and so many things not yet experienced. He really was looking forward to it.

It sounded like he really was getting the full tour. At least he then wouldn't get lost when he was to go about the ship alone for the first time. He would never admit it but it had been a concern he was not able to shake. He had of course read about Discovery but with the special Deck constructions to accommodate the Multi Vector Assault mode the internal structure of the Ship formed some sections that looked nearly as complicated as twisting labyrinths to his eyes.
Also she mentioned the Bridge, he would not dare to step foot on there alone without good reason, he was only an Ensign after all, but if she would invite him to enter it all protocols should be done justice, shouldn't they? If anyone knew, it would be the Security Officers after all. He was looking forward to the whole tour. But Food also sounded good.

Leaving Kinley's science labs, Tanner and James made quick work of the route to the turbolift. They'd head to lunch on Deck 6 but, since it shared a floor with the holodeck, it would be easy to include a short conversation on holodeck safety and ...inappropriate usage. There weren't rules against holodeck romances or sexual adventures, but Tanner liked to ensure newbies understood how small their ship was in the grand scheme of things. Staff still had to work together despite the drama.

After that, it was down to Engineering and Sickbay and then all the way up to the bridge.

"So.." Tanner said as they entered the lift and it closed behind them, "Before we get to food, I need to know a few things." She called out their destination and the lift moved, "Being new on a ship usually has about a three-week honeymoon period where you're all excitement and endorphines. You want to explore, see things, volunteer and sometimes as I've seen, rush into danger headfirst."

She gave James a smirk, "And sometimes, the holodeck can be a catalyst for releasing hormones and such. Are you able to look me in the eyes and say you won't be an Ensign I remember awkwardly?"
