[Mess hall]

Lennox was awake, more than usual as he thought about life in Starfleet, life if he was not part of it and what dynamic would have changed if his siblings were part of it. The Scotsman slowly moved himself out of his bunk, putting his uniform on as he wandered down to the mess hall.

With the latest murder case open and shut, there was a little more time to think. He took a seat, close to the wall, with his back facing the doorway. Lennox sat down, his head in his hands and heaved a loud sigh. He missed his son, and desperately missed his wife. Grief had been a stage that was waiting for him for too long, haven't properly been able to grieve for their loss as he got lost in his own sorrow.

His hand scratched at his beard, tears rolling down his cheeks. He could have done this in his dorm but the mess hall seemed a better place.

Nothing could help relieve the pain of a husband who lost his wife and of a father who lost everything precious to him.

Zex had pulled the late shift in Sickbay this week.  It was one of the disadvantages of being one of the lowest ranking members of the Medical Department.  But at least it was typically slower than the day shift, and she got her lunch break.

It was now that she was taking advantage of her meal time.  She walked into the Mess Hall and filled her tray will a few items.  She figured that she would eat alone, but then noticed the lone man in the room.  "Hello" she said.

Lennox looked up at the new voice, removing his hands from his face, sniffing slightly, as if to make himself look presentable and that he had not been previously crying.

"Hello, lass. Why don't ye take a seat 'ere, plenty of room to go 'round. Name's Crewman Lennox Ainsley, ma'am."

Given that it was the late shift, the overhead lights had been dimmed.  Supposedly it helped with everyone's circadian rhythm.   Zex just thought it helped to create a more romantic atmosphere and thus a higher likelihood of chance encounters like this.

"Certainly" Zex replied eagerly.  She approached the table.  "I'm Zex, Medical Officer and I love, love, love your accent" she said before she slid into the seat across from him.

"What are you doing alone in the dark" Zex asked once she noticed that he had no food or drink in from of him.  Then she finally looked into his eyes and saw the redness in them.  "is something wrong?" she asked in a whisper.

Lennox's lips curled into a smile as the woman, Zex, had commented on his accent. it was not the first time and certainly seemed to work wonders with the ladies on board the ship. Though, Lennox held not interest in dulling his wife and son's memories by 'hooking up' with another woman.

Perhaps the room was not dark enough as Zex went to asking whether he was alright. He heaved a sigh, looking away and at the same time clicking his tongue against the roof of his mouth. "I miss 'hem, Zex."

Zex looked down at her food.  Sausage stuffed giant rigatoni, one of her favorite Italian meals.  Apparently it would have to wait.

"Your family?" Zex guessed as she looked back up at him.  She had read over everyone's file her first day on the ship.  She knew that he had lost them recently, but didn't know how.

He looked at Zex, nodding silently before glancing at the food that she had brought over with her.

"I don't want te put ye off yer food." He said, gesturing at the food.

Lennox sighed, rubbing absentmindedly at his neck. "My son, my wife. I'm sure it's down in some feckin' file somewhere. Bloody scavengers. I wasn't--I couldn't protect 'em. Some shitty 'usband I make, ey?"

"It'll keep.  Or I'll just recycle it for a fresh plate later" Zex replied.  She scooted the dish to the side to show that she was interested to hear him out.  "Tell me how it happened.  If you want" she said.

He tilted his head, heaving a sigh before finally deciding it was best to talk about it with somebody and he had already alluded to the story. Lennox shifted in his seat slightly.

"Initially, it was my wife who 'ad been shot, but 'hey didn't jus' stop 'here. 'Hey 'ad targeted my child too. 'Eartless, cold-blooded fu--idiots." Lennox said, running a hand down his face. He had a potty-mouth, perhaps most would have known. However, Lennox knew he needed to stop but it was difficult. "They didn't even give 'em a chance, ma'am. I 'ad already lost my father, but te 'ave lost my own family...'ave ye lost anyone close te ye before?"
