[Holodeck Two]

Ian watched Addams' take off run and yelped as he saw him pull back too soon and too sharply to the inevitable result. He cut the engine on the Highland Gal and hopped out of the cockpit. As his feet hit the ground, a truck pulled up with Flip in the passenger seat already cursing an ultraviolet streak that caused Ian to wince again as he boarded and the truck roared down the runway to the stricken Tomahawk.

Ian jumped from the back of the truck as it slowed and he ran over to the cockpit, not because he was worried Addams was hurt, he couldn't be, the safety protocols would have prevented that, but to get between him and Flip who stormed toward the plane is full rut.

"Easy now Flip, damage isn't too bad, it was his first try, cut him some slack!"

"Cut him some slack? Cut him some slack? Why in the he'll should I cut him some slack! Everyone who signed on to be here swore they had experience in P-40s and less than one in ten of you do and you're not the one that has to fix the mistakes of you idiot so called pilots!

Don could hear Flip give his lip to Ian. Though he was unable to hear what Flip had to say. In a way, Don could feel the anger from Flip. Don too would be pissed off. Or an engineer would be piss off if you burn out dilithium in idiot maneuver.
Quote

Ian stood his ground and yelled back at the angry mechanic.

"Flip, you can get as angry you want, blow a valve if you want, but what's done is done. You deal with the plane, I'll deal with Addams. Now you got a plane to fix!"

The crashed bandit came down the ladder.  He heard what Ian had told Flip. Man, Flip was peeved. The mechanic walked by slamming his shoulder against Don's. The Science fiction pilot turned to look at Flip as he approached his awful take off plane.

"Hey, Flip I am sorry man," he had tried to communicate to the man.

Quote

Ian turned and helped Addams out of and away from the plane to keep him as far from the line of sight of Flip as he could. Once they were out of earshot, he added.

"I swear the gates of hell was in that man's eyes," Don shared. "Look... I am sorry, sir. I tried. But that thing is hard to take off. You think you got it and now I guess I will be kissing his heels, eh?"
Quote

"You have just discovered the biggest design flaws of this entire generation of aircraft, the tail dragger landin' gear. You have ta wait until the front wheels unstick before you pull back or you end up lookin' like a ruptured duck."

Don rolled his brown eyes. "I guess that's how it works. Things get improve by flaws."
Quote

Ian paused as a devilish smile spread across his face he chuckled as he continued.

The older man tilted his head to the left. The crashed dummy was confused.
Quote

"Lad, you have just earned your nickname. From this day forward, you are now 'Duck'."

Ian then laughed and hoped Addams could see the humor in the situation, which was, actually fairly funny from an onlooker's perspective.

Don took a deep breath as his eyes looked to the right corner of his eyeball and he crossed his arms front of his chest. "Flip...Peanut...duck... so. What is yours?" If Ian had s nick name. Sadly, Don forgot it.

Ian laughed a little harder and clapped Addams on the back.

"Well Lad, ta tell truth, I don't have one. I did my practice flights without an audience or who bloody knows what'd the guys would have come up with. However, thinkin' about it, Duck is even more perfect than I originally thought, my usual call sign is Daffy One from an animated character I'm fond of here, and he happens to be named Daffy Duck, so if'n I'm Daffy, Duck couldn't be more perfect for my wingman."

Weird. Ian was more a culture hawk then Don could imagine. A side smile grew on the older man who was an acting Ensign . "Well I take your word for it, Daffy," he replied.

"So I reckon Flip there gonna carry a chip on his shoulder on you. I got to work my wings off to gain his respect too...so are they on real time with us in this program?" He asked.

Ian frowned as he thought about the juxtaposition of the time between reality and the program's flow which was an interesting exercise in temporal mechanics.

"As the holodeck is a shared resource, I can't leave the program runnin'. I have the program set ta track real-time and adjust the program accordingly. Flip and his crew are miracle workers, mechanics of the era were simply amazin' with their ability ta keep the planes flyin' with virtually nothing ta work with fer parts. Your 'Ruptured Duck' will be repaired by tomorrow. However, nothing will fix your rep with him. His default settin' is miserable old coot and I personally believe he hadn't smiled in twenty years, if ever. You learn ta accept that he hates everyone equally, but I wouldn't want anyone else touchin' the Highland Gal before a mission. He's simply the best."

Ian started walking and called for the exit.

"Let's call it a day Lad, don't let a botched take off rattle you, learn from it and we'll try again tomorrow."

So. A brand new day was waiting for him in the holodeck. The ensign stared the doors down as he ready to march onward. The morning sun was bright as orange when the holodeck's doors opened. Funny he held his right hand above his eyes. It was a bright one.

There was killjoy with his wrench in his hand. "Hey, Flip, " greeted the mechanic as he walked by.

"Duck you stay away from my birds, " he warned waving the wrench.

"Look, I promise I will not do that, " he held his hands up as he wanted to surrender.

"okay..first you clean that mess over there, " Flip pointed the mess of oil containers which was all mess with oil. "You show me you do work and I think as you work."

Don stared at the mess. A frown grown as he knew this was going to be a messy job. The smell of old oil was not going to make his job. However he had wanted to win Flip respect. It was best to do it. Possible to mend a wound.

That made him think of the emotion wounds around the Discovery the crew on Galloway. The guy had all lot of people talking about him. It was not nice either. If these people get Ian as a secret Santa. They all would get him coal.

Plus Flip seemed to have some personality of Ian that the crew did not like. Hmm. He had to some how tell Ian that he was a wee to aggressive. The way he was like a roaring lion on a mission. Not sure why? People make mistakes. Vulcans make mistakes. Romulans make mistakes. Captains make mistakes. About anyone makes mistakes.

It could also be that the First Officer has tunnel vision. He sees one way and a narrow out. Possible there could be some hope. Mention it the counselor would not be good. The crew who felt offended or hurt might tell the counselor. That would be like blood and oil in water. Those three do not mix well. The water would be the captain of the ship. He would try to shine a light on his fellow pilot. Possible he could bring hope to the crew.

Ian sauntered into Kunming with all confidence of an elite fighter pilot, which was aura every other fighter pilot of the era radiated. Some of it was pure bravado, but the greater portion confidence was attempting to avoid whistling past the graveyard. Aerial combat was only 27 years old and less than a decade removed from cloth biplanes. Being a fighter pilot was deadly business and you had to believe you were better than anyone you were going to encounter or you'd curl up in a fetal position and never fly again.

Ian was under no illusions that he was the best pilot in the sky, but he was pretty good and knowing his limitations made him more effective that those that relied on bravado. He saw Addams on a crap detail and he marched over to Flip with an expression that would melt steel.

"Flip, have you lost your mind? That man is a fighter pilot, not one of your mechanics! I know he bent one of the birds, but that doesn't give you right to treat him like a trainee! We are going to take up a flight, you get them ready and get over yourself!"

Ian pivoted away from the stunned mechanic and over to Don.

"Come on Duck, we have planes to fly."

Ian led Addams over to a pair of P-40s, but stopped before the began the preflight.

"Lad, I know Flip is a bastard, but even though we don't wear ranks here, you are an officer and he has no right to treat you like you aren't."

He heard how they felt Ian had a big head. They added he needed to get out of the clouds. There was the story how he yelled at Injanza on not mention the doors will lock in Engineering. It was simple mistake. However the word got he was peeved.

The P-40 was a beauty. They were all. It was a magnificent site to see them on all line up wing to wing down in a row. Like troopers ready to go for the kill.

Don turned his body to look at Ian. "So how does one deal with a difficult person? This is his runway. So he's like the captain of the Birds here. He keeps them in shape. It is his pride. It is like you and me. We are pilots. Your Daffy and I am Duck. So he has this stage with the spot light. Is it like a Starship. You got to try level on his level. Or your head be in the clouds," he had actually grabbed the crew words in this small start up speech. "Cause rough up someone feathers can make you like one ugly duck....like me.. am I one ugly duck?" He joked at the end.

That speech was like a light toward what he want to share. He was not how to continue. Possible Flip would be a good example and an inspiration to help the unhappy crew of the Discovery.

[Holodeck Two]

Ian listened to what Don was saying and on one level he could see where he was coming from. He was being hard, part was establishing that there was a new sheriff in town, some was not wanting to make mistakes that would get someone killed, but perhaps he wasn't appreciated in the freewheeling culture that seemed to be standard operating procedure on the Discovery. He waited until the other man was done and a full ten seconds beyond that to make sure he had his thoughts organized before he spoke.

"Lad, I suppose I am bein' hard. I like ta enjoy myself as must as the next bloke, but things were too loose fer the good order and discipline of the ship. "I know we aren't at war, but given all that can happen in an instant, we have ta train hard ta bleed less. I will take your input under advisement, but if the price fer me bein' a hard arse is that more of the crew lives ta hate me, then I can live with that."

Don was about to open his mouth that they were not at war.

Don nodded his head. "I am not asking you to be chummy and be friends with them. We are in Starfleet. I believe the fate philosophy. Everyone and every place or whatever has a reason to be where it is. It's call Destiny," he said as he set his eyes to the ground. A beat he lifted his eyes back to Ian.

"I was always told to speak to the person who is higher then your rank to see how you can solve a problem. For instance when we had to save those people Zirium. Yes. We the crew pulled some idiotic stunt. The captain had discipline them."

"You ever shared how you operate to the Captain? Forward how you like to make new changes. Cause if your people are  happy they not going to be angry. They lose their pride in what they do. Or work harder. But we are all different. I even know you discipline people at times alone or quiet. Being yelled front of everyone can bring shame too. I could be wrong. But I think you might ask Captain Nevir on how he feels.  Cause we are his people first. And maybe you two need to be on the same page. Like two parents raising a kid to go bed early but other parent gives in. Two different voices can confuse the child," Don finished. He was thinking he has long speeches like Ian now.

"Oh. I am trying give advice and not trying to tell you what to do," he gave Ian a pat on the back of the shoulder.

Ian Galloway

Ian shrugged as he replied because it seemed like there wasn't a common enough ground for consensus.

"Ensign, one of the things stressed in the command course was that the captain and the first officer do not have to share the same command philosophy, but they do have to share unity of vision and I believe we do, which sort of speaks ta your parent's analogy.

"The Captain's way is different from mine and I fully respect those differences. Actually it all comes down to respect which is a two-way street. My default setting is ta respect anyone that choses ta wear the uniform. Whether they keep that respect completely depends on their actions.

"As first officer, it is my job ta free up the captain ta command. Personnel matters, includin' discipline, are my responsibility. I admit I am still adjustin' ta the crew and the command climate of the Discovery, so I appreciate your input Lad. I can't promise I will change how I see things, but I am glad you brought this up.

"Now, how about you suit up and let's get some air under our arses?"

Don shrugged his shoulders. "If a mutiny pops up. That will be on your head not mine Daffy," Don said.

Being a rookie to this group in the Holodeck would see that Don too had a high confident walk. The black curly hair man thought he was the best of the best. He was not now. He was planning to be the best. Even better the Daffy.

"Sure bossman," Don replied.

The older man went to the locker to grab his flight suit. As he was pulling it on. "I mean to ask... Was Patton that war General in World War II? Was he a pilot himself?" Well. The present time was something what Don knew about. He had not much history to the past of the world. All he knew was it was about twent-first century, early 2000 about that Vulcans came to visit Earth was the Phoenix. Flew out by Dr. Zefram Cochrane. The earth changed as the visitors had introduce themselves.

It had changed the whole way of Earth ways. Even the nacelles on the Phoenix was the first design of Starships and still now. Like the beginning of man. His father said if man had not created the wheel they would not be in space. It was remarkable. There was much to be learn about this time from Ian. That was why he had liked the other guy. Ian chuckled as he replied to Don's comment regarding mutiny.

"I appreciate that, but if'n I've screwed things up ta the point that I need I warnin', then perhaps a mutiny is what I deserve."

Shifting gears as he went from instructor pilot to history professor, Ian replied slightly more seriously to Don's question.

"No, ensign, he was not a pilot, In 1941, Patton is currently a two-star general on his way to four-stars in the next three years. He is an armor officer through and through. In fact, he was instrumental in developin' tank warfare doctrine for the United States Army. He was a character and the press loved him because he was so colorful. He was a skilled tank officer, but I'll let you read up on him and let you decide about his personality."

"Now, up you go. Do not bend the bird again or Chennault will hand you over ta Flip and that will not be a good day."

Ian then jogged over to the Highland Gal and began his pre-flight checks, trusting Addams to do the same for his as yet unnamed plane.

Don jogged to his plane, climbed up the ladder, and climbed in his Shark. "Hey, I try my best not mess you up," he told the steel winged bird. He pulled the pilot seat belts and harness over his body and pulled them down to lock himself in. Check the buckles for additional checks. "Hey I need to name you...hmm."

He double check everything was up and ready to go. Got the helmet on, and chin strap on nice. The panel board all looked correct. He fired her up in the proper sequence.

"Flaming Shark!" He exclaimed.

Then Don had looked down to the run way man who will guide him to fly out. Nerves was striking him all ready. "I can do this...." he told himself and licked his lower lip.

Engines was roaring like a hungry beast ready to rip up the skies. He gave it gas pedal to accelerate, visualizing the feel of the tail as he slowly moved the joystick of the mobile the direction to take off. Then with a near miss.

Flip was spying and cursed when he saw that. Then to his surprise the Flaming Shark flew out to the sky. Don was little off with the balance of the wings going off the degree off. Then in a moment he leveled her out. The force of the pull of the gravity was awesome. Then he was taking her up to the altitude and leveled her off.

"Woah," he yelled. Then he quickly realized he forgot the landing gear. He pressed the level to raise them up. Then he looked around to see. This was amazing.

Ian watched with some trepidation as Addam's Tomahawk gathered speed, but this time, he held the nose down properly until the tail lifted before climbing smoothly into skies above Kunming.

Smiling to see the other man succeed, Ian started his own take off run and soon had the Highland Gal cruising along side Addam's P-40 with the two of them climbing to 15,000 feet. Once leveled off, Ian toggled his throat mic.

"Okay Lad, now that we've managed take off and level flight, we have ta get you ready ta fight. The key thing ta know about your opponent is they have much more experience than you and their planes a specifically designed to maximize maneuverability. As a result, if you are fool enough ta get into a turnin' fight in the horizontal with any Japanese fighter, you will lose. The safeties will keep you from injury, but your plane does not have that protection.

"Since you cannot fight in the horizontal, don't do it. Use the strengths of the Tomahawk ta fight in the vertical. You can both out climb and out dive Nates and Claudes. You can out dive Zeroes, you cannot out climb them. So the trick is ta use the ability of the P-40 ta make diving attacks from above, then continue the dive until you are in the clear, then climb above and re-engage on your terms."

Ian waited for that information to sink in before continuing.

"The other advantages you have over any Japanese aircraft is superior firepower and the ability ta take damage. The choice ta maximize maneuverability meant Japanese planes are extremely fragile. One good hit will either cause them ta break up or burst into flames."

Pausing again, Ian then keyed his mic one more time.

"When all else fails, the breakaway escape maneuver of choice is the 'Split-Ess', watch and learn."

Ian then, without warning, snap rolled the Highland Gal inverted and pulled into a steep dive. He continued to pull back on the stick until the fighter was back level. Once he was through with the demonstration, he banked hard to come about and climbed back to a position on Addam's wing.

"As you can see, the maneuver uses a lot of sky, so never attempt ta Split-Ess below 1,000 feet. You give it a try."

One of the things Ian had not know about Don was his racing his ship he had bought. He had used her in a unique way in races. There are times he he dive down and roll in space. This was about the same, but there was no asteroids and there was a ground to meet him.

He jerked his stick for a roll half, as he had done in his racing ship. It was like he was upside down, then he dived down feeling the rush. It was bloody brilliant. The ground was racing toward him. He lifted the shift back to pull her back up, let her sky fly high, and then he rolled to his spot. Sadly, he some what was very close to Ian's fighter.

"Woah!!!!!" He yelled. "Sorry Daf"
