Commander Rayek tr'Lhoell
[USS Discovery-B - Deck One - Bridge] Stardate 78288.5  (April 16, 2401)

Broadshire's mention of stress leave had the Romulan giving the man a slightly confused look.  Dr. Betaika's daily reports to the First Officers had Broadshire listed on medical leave, which yes stress leave was technically but typically standard medical leave and stress leave were reported separately.

Rayek had assumed the medical leave taken was to recuperate from the virus not stress-oriented.  Perhaps it shouldn't matter the type of leave taken but given the doctor's appearance Rayek was even less sure of the Broadshire's well-being but the Romulan having been pulled from duty himself was loathe to do it to another unless absolutely necessary.   The man claimed to be happy to be back to work... for now he would supposed that would be sufficient.  Perhaps this Frontier Day celebration would be just what the doctor needed.

At Broadshire's query about orders, Rayek nodded towards the VIP chair situated on the other side of the chair.   "I think it's only appropriate you be on the bridge to witness the Frontier Day speech by Admiral Shelby, and Discovery's escort of the Enterprise F."

Of course, none of the Command Officers would be really needed.  That was the whole point of the Swarm feature, the ships would be automated in their movements for the entirety of the escort.

It was at this time that ship status reports began coming in from the various departments.
As departments call in to him, Rayek noted their status on his checklist.   Medical and Ops were accounted for already

Shuttle Bay. Check.

Security.  Check.

Rayek smiled a bit at the young officer's enthusiasm. "Of course, whenever it suits you best.  For now, I will leave you to report your station's readiness to your Department Head." He said giving a slight nod in Kinley's direction as a prompt.

Lorut spoke up then - Ops officer was ready, and thus was chafing at the bit to get going.  She needed to learn patience.  He wondered if she would be open to meditation?

"I'm still waiting on reports from your department head, Science, and Engineering."

It was then that Lieutenant Banan sent Rayek a comm, reporting in that all Ops had called into him other than Ensign Lorut on the Bridge.  Rayek could hear a note of frustration in the man's voice.

Rayek tapped his commbadge to respond.  =/\= "Thank you Lieutenant.  Ensign Lorut reported Bridge Ops directly to me earlier.  I'll remind her that my orders were to report to her Department Head. tr'Lhoell out." =/\=

As the Romulan spoke, he looked towards Vila meaningfully. "Next time be certain to report to your Department Head as well, so he is not left waiting on your report."

Eventually, just past his 5 minute deadline - a fact that Rayek was not happy about, all departments called in and all was in readiness.

"Captain, the ship and crew 'stand ready' for your orders to disembark spacedock."

[USS Discovery - Deck 1 - Main Bridge]

While the Captain looked over final systems checks, Ruthie was expertly manning the controls of her station to run a diagnostic, using her talents as a linguist to check and double-check standard translations of the universal translator as part of the comms systems.  Many in Starfleet had been so used to universal translators that they normally don't realize when they speak in their native tongue.  How the computer knew when to translate and when to allow native language was one of the biggest secrets of the translator, but if even that glitched out, the crew could find themselves unable to communicate.  All green on the board, the young ensign smiled, glancing over at Lorut.

"Comm diagnostics are green, Ensign." she stated, before turning in her chair to view the bridge and her father.

Nevir nodded to Rayek at the confirmation and stood up.  He activated the all comm on his chair, and spoke.

"All hands, this is the Captain.  Today marks a historic milestone, both as a holiday and as an event.  Starfleet has created a smart fleet, a networking tool that links our ships together.  The general public doesn't know this, in fact most of the fleet doesn't yet know this, but this will be the first test run of what is known as the Fleet Formation System.  It is currently going to be controlled from the flagship for this demonstration. The Discovery has been given the distinct honor of escort to the Enterprise, and as such we will be one of the first ships connected to this formation.  Now, for our role, we will be taking position in our assigned position with the rest of the fleet prior to the flight of the Enterprise.  Enterprise will be doing a round around Spacedock and then we will take our position as escort to her.  This ceremony is more for show then work, which is why the Bridge has more officers here than normal.  Once they activate the fleet formation, we'll just be along for the ride.  So in that case, just enjoy the show.  Happy Frontier Day, Discovery.  Captain out."

With that, the Captain took his seat again, crossing a leg over another.  "Miss Falleq-Tekin, inform Spacedock of our departure.  Miss Lorut, clear all moorings.  Mr. Grippen, take us to our position, 241 mark 218 mark 14. All hands, prepare for departure."

"Spacedock has given us all clear, Captain." Ruthie stated, confirming her own orders.

"Let's do this!"

Lek rolled his eyes at the captain's announcement. Although he wasn't old enough to personally remember the M5 fiasco, he'd certainly studied it at the Academy and wondered how long before something catastrophically bad happened. He just wished there had been time to have come up with a way to disable the 'Fleet Formation System'.

"Because, what could possibly go wrong with the same idea as M5, just on a larger scale."

He muttered softly to himself.

She simply rolled her eyes but nodded. "He's lucky he gets a report at all," she muttered, but louder she spoked. "I am sorry, Commander, it seemed redundant when I am HERE," she said.

She was carefully watching the Linguistic's work, as well as the input from other computers across the ship. She was satisfied with the work, though she'd prefer to be doing it all herself.

She radioed back to the Engineering office.

=/\=Lt. Banan, further orders, please?=/\= She waited for a response. Why did everyone on this ship take so long to answer an inquiry?!

Malik Grippen

[Bridge]

Malik listened to the captain's speech with interest and wondered if pilots like him would soon be out of a job. He didn't really like the idea at all, and didn't believe a fleet formation system would ever best a skilled pilot. But in any-case, he was far too low on the food chain to have an opinion that mattered. He would carry out his duty.

Malik turned his attention to Alex at helm.

"Aye captain. Mr Graham. Lay in a course, 241 mark 218 mark 14 and proceed."

As Alex carried that out, Malik couldn't help but overhear an ops ensign's sass. He glanced at her and gave her a signature Risan-wink.

Speaking to no one in particular, Malik smiled and stated, "Today is certainly a cause for celebration, and a few Risan mai-tai later on."

Despite the Operations ensign's attempt to keep her voice low and unheard, Romulans - much like Vulcans - had exceptional hearing;  the muttered comment was heard quite clearly.  Rayek, however, realized the small progress made - that Vila didn't openly disparage her senior - so he didn't call her out on the remark.  He did however file it away mentally.

Rayek also noted that the ensign sought out work to keep herself occupied.  Not an easy thing to supply when the whole purpose of the Fleet system was to automate much of the work.

Over the comms, Lieutenant Banan paused - obviously not having additional 'orders' at this time.

Rayek rose from his seat and moved to stand to the side of Ensign Lorut and spoke to be heard over the comm.

=/\="Lieutenant, if could be advantageous if the Ensign were assigned to doing continuous power diagnostics to study the efficiency of the upgrades, with the purpose of comparing it to manual maneuverings."=/\=

There was a soft 'Thank the Prophets' in response.

=/\= "You heard the Commander, Ensign Lorut.  Begin a power diagnostic and keep it running throughout the fleet's maneuvers." =/\=

Shortly thereafter more status reports came in.

Taking a hint from the Commander's order Ramort turned towards the console again and opened the technical interfaces of the sensors he had just worked on. He removed the system tag indicating the calibration process and flagged them as ready for the Engineering and Ops systems, it was unlikely they would be needed but it was protocol so it had to be done. After closing the interface he noticed a new reading in the sensor listing, something called a Unified Fleet Sensor Grid, something that hadn't been part off his training, he would have to look it up in the specs later or ask engineering about it. Maybe it was somehow connected to the commotion of personal that allegedly was doing something to the ship in engineering.

Accessing the general Science interface again he compiled his sensor logs, moved them to the shared science database and marked it for Commander Garrison to be made part of the overall readiness report of the Science Department, then he addressed her directly:

Commander, all Sensors are back online and calibrated for deployment."

Kinley was getting her confirmations from the science teams back in the labs from Rajagopalan, who was busy listing off a series of statistics about the scientific operations of the ship, general scanner operations, and the progress of whatever various experiments were in progress. None would be affected by embarking.  Nodding to Mr. Ramort to confirm his statements, she gave a quick thumbs up, before reporting back to the commander.  "œMy department is ready."

The turbolift doors opened to reveal a packed Bridge, seemingly everyone and their Grandma had decided to attend the Admiral's speech. Seeing their first officer, Malik made his way over to the Romulan.

"Flight Control Department report all green, commander. *cough*." The Risan cleared his throat, and suddenly remembered he hadn't brushed his hair before he left. For someone who took great pride in their appearance, Malik inwardly cursed at his ineptitude. That damn vaccine... Hopefully the XO wouldn't pick him up on a bit of messy hair, considering the entire Romulan race had one hair style.

[USS Discovery - Main Bridge - Science Station 2]

The Captain's speech sent down a chill Ramorts spine. It wasn't really that he was scarred, it was the anticipation of his first deployment suddenly hitting him with the full force of a shuttle crushing into an asteroid on full warp speed. It was the sudden feeling of belonging, inspired by the look back at a long tradition of Officers in the Fleet before him. It was the honor of flying right next to the Enterprise, he could probably take some close up sensor images if he wanted too, and it wouldn't be a total breach of protocol. And yes, somewhere deep down, it was also worry. The whole point of Starfleet was to have real people out there to do the Discovering, to initiate contact and see things never laid eye upon.
Starfleet could just sent out long range Probes if they wanted only the data. The could sent holograms if some human touch was needed. Of course, what would he know about the true reasoning the Admiralty might have for such a shift in Doctrine, it just felt awkward and not quite in line with what the Instructors had insisted were the core principles of the Fleet and the Federation at large.

It was very possible the new fleet mode was somehow linked to the unknown Sensor Mode he had discovered.
Compelled by a spontaneous wave of curiosity, he opened the technical specifications for Discoveries Sensor Subroutines, running an Index Search for all mentions of connected Sensors and Fleet Formation. The Computer responded with an error, denying access to the relevant files based on lack of proper clearance. Apparently only command level Officers and Starfleet Corps of Engineers Officers assigned to the Project were privileged to learning more about it. Not something he could not have foretold if he was honest with himself. If this was Starfleets newest Advancement in linked computing there probably wasn't anyone meant to learn too much about it any time earlier than necessary.
The search unearthed some not restricted mentions of the protocols in the sensor parsing processors though. It seemed some additional routines had been added to allow for external data to be integrated into the sensors data stream. If he extrapolated this with purely the name and the captain's speech alone, the prospect of linking ships sensors in real time was pretty exciting from a science standpoint. Ships sensors were pretty powerful and by linking them even a couple ships could capture some unprecedented data. The mere thought of deploying such a technology to map out a nebula in its entirety in real time spawned an itch as to just what such data might reveal. What new could be learned that was currently still hidden beyond technical limitations.

"The possibilities ... this could be a game changer!"
Captured by these thoughts, he didn't even realize he started speaking aloud. Still quite as to not disturb the moment on the bridge but still unintended.

No, no. Surely someone had thought of that and there were safeties. Tanner would need to know about and brush up on. New protocols. New procedures. She made a mental note to speak with Rayek about it.

Rayek, as he made his way back to his command chair, glanced over to the new science officer at the human's open comment to the bridge.  The young officer was obviously a positive thinker, seeing the potential benefits first; unlike Rayek, who because of his paranoid Romulan nature, instead saw only the threat that the Fleet Formation System would become when (and to the Romulan's mind it was only a matter of time) it was hacked.

The networked ship system was of course the perfect a target for any enemy of the Federation now.  To be honest, Rayek suspected that even Federation allies, like the Klingons and most certainly the Romulan Free State, would be looking it how to circumvent it.  'Just in case' they needed to 'defend themselves'.   It's what he would advise to do if he were still 'on loan' to the Free State.

He wondered to himself, what sort of security measures protected the new system.  Perhaps he could offer to the Admiral to test its security?   Though he was ten years 'retired' from the Tal'Shiar, Rayek figured if even he could break in, then the system was a lost cause and should be immediately removed.

Yes, that sounded like a good plan. He would ask the Captain to bring this suggestion up to the Admiral immediately after the festivities.  He wished he'd been brought in on the details of the upgrade prior.  He could have tested it before the Frontier Day celebration.

Opening his PADD, Rayek started on drafting his request to Captain Tekin.

Lorut's announcement of the notable power draw from Engineering, caught at Rayek's attention, and he set aside his message, so that he could  'mirror' the Ops console to his PADD and look at the readings that Vila was commenting on.  The Romulan frowned slightly.

There was a significant draw.  Unfortunately, Fleet Command hadn't provided any stats on the system so the First Officer didn't have any idea what was considered normal for power consumption on the new system.

~April, 2401

Just as quickly as the anomaly appeared on her screen, it went away. Perhaps it was just because the rest of the battle group was in close proximity and she was picking up those signals, too.

She glanced up at Commander trLhoell as he replied.

She nodded. "That makes sense, sir, thank you," she said. She tapped her comms badge.

=/\=Engineering, please keep the Bridge alert to the power fluctuations from the rest of the Battle Group. =/\= She said. =/\=I got a momentary dip in your power supply, but it's righted itself.=/\= She clicked off, not waiting for a response. One wasn't necessary, she just needed fresh eyes on it.

A power spike? That was mildly concerning, but overall, it seemed to be handling fine. Something to watch though, as whatever was installed for this  was working. She could see the rest of the fleet move into position for the "¦ parade? Yeah, parade. That's what she'd call it.  Flanking the Enterprise- F on its' final flight into the annals. Judging from the flight scanners, she could see that dozens, if not hundreds of ships were in position now, All waiting for whatever person with their eye in the sky to push the button to synchronize the ships. It was really cool tech, but she still wasn't sure about it all.

Kinley grinned when James mentioned the possibilities. Odds are, this was just going to be just a normal display of cool tech. She'd figure out the pros and cons of it all after the parade and after she got some more sleep.

"œIndeed. Mr. Ramort, would you scan for any external anomalies? I'm betting that this is just a bit of a glitch with those new systems, but just to be on the safe side. Anyhow, I think they should be playing the broadcast soon, so we might want to open our hailing frequencies."

We're in Starfleet here. Weird is part of the job description.

Dem Broadshire

[Bridge | USS Discovery]
Dem gave a slight nod of the head toward Rayek, before sitting down on his visitor chair.

Over the next few minutes, Dem sat in quiet contemplation, just observing the sights of the energised bridge. Feeling numb to the visible excitement, Dem used all his energy to remain present, trying to cast all his unsavoury thoughts out of his mind. He hoped that he could sit back, and enjoy the show that was the culmination of years of hard work from countless engineers.

[USS Discovery - Main Bridge - Science Station 2]

"Acknowledged, commencing full spectrum Sensor scan for possible sources of energy drain in the vicinity."

He set the Sensors for a full sweep of the surrounding space.

The surrounding space was filled with ionized particles, earths atmosphere was constantly bleeding gases and solar radiation charged them up. The presence of thousands of ship in orbit was doing the whole affair no favors. The movement of so many ships was causing subspace to ripple at the edges of the sensor range. In the higher energy bands the reactors of the ships around them were clearly visible. No shields had been activated to mask their distinct energy signatures. Starfleet wanted to be seen today. Nearly 100 Ships had begun to take their final positions in the grand formation that now was taking shape over earth equator. In a wider formation around them thousands of smaller civilian crafts formed their own starlight sky of small reactors, powering shuttle craft, freighters and any other kind of ship capable of taking off. The Formation really attracted attention.

There were also the official ship. Delegations from all major powers had sent their own ships to carry their delegates, ordered to bring good wishes from their respective governments, secretly sent to take scans of Starfleets newest technological leap. It was an open secret and one that could not be avoided unless the Federation Council wanted to risk diplomatic fallout.

The Sensors read hundreds of energy signatures but none where none was supposed to be. The security area around the formation was unbroken. No form of directed energy weapon or other possible source of interference showed up on the scanners. He changed scanning mode from a wide area active scan to a close field passive scanner and directed it at the other Starfleet Vessels around them. Here some fluctuations showed up, hinting at not only Discovery being affected, but no cause was appearent. It had to be some internal issue nestled in the energy systems of all Ships. Maybe it was something Starfleet had installed along with the modifications.

Suddenly the long range scanners had a spring of activity. Some kind of gravitational flux and tachyon emissions were detected somewhere around Jupiter. He checked against the astrophysical data of the solar observatories but there were no scheduled events or measured phenomena around Jupiter that could explain the readings.
This seemed like something he should report:

"Commander Garrison, I was not able to definitely determine the source of the energy drain but it has to be something onboard our own ships. It seems to also affect the other ships in the fleet. There are some strange readings around Jupiter though."
